If he wants to go or shows any inclination that he doesn't want to be in Swansea anymore, then let him go

The 28-year-old has not travelled to the USA for Swansea's pre-season tour because of the talks, prompting Saunders to say that Swansea may be right to sell.

"Let him go if he doesn't want to be there," said Saunders.

"I would sit him down, explain to him: 'I want to play you at the top', and then have him fight Bony for that position."

On Friday 4 July, Swansea manager Garry Monk said he was keen to keep hold of Michu.

But Saunders said it might be best to let the forward leave the club.

"It's only a mistake [to let him go] if he wants to stay," said Saunders.

"If he wants to go or shows any inclination that he doesn't want to be in Swansea anymore, then let him go."

Michu joined Swansea from Rayo Vallecano for £2.2m during the summer of 2012 and was the club's top scorer with 22 goals in his first full season.

The Spain international's second season with the Swans was marred by knee and ankle problems and he scored only two league goals, in contrast to the 16 scored by fellow striker Wilfried Bony.

Ivory Coast international Bony has also impressed at this summer's World Cup in Brazil scoring twice in three matches for his country.

Saunders said he could not see a way for Swansea to accommodate both players.

"For me, Bony's a different type of striker," said Saunders.

"He gets on the end of crosses, he's good in the air in the box, but Michu can bring people into play better.

"He's proved the season before that he could do it, and I thought Swansea lost a bit with him moving out of position."
