Salford City chief hopes Scholes & other owners could play for club

Salford City chairman Karen Baird hopes some of the club's famous owners may play for the team later this season.

With the exception of David Beckham, Manchester United's 'Class of 92' are aiming to take the club through the leagues using young, local talent.

Ryan Giggs, 40, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, both 39, watched Saturday's pre-season friendly at Daisy Hill.

"It would be nice if some of them did play," said Baird. "Maybe in some of the FA Cup rounds."

Phil Neville, 37, was at training on Thursday and will run Tuesday's session alongside Scholes. Another former United player, Nicky Butt, 39, is also a co-owner.

Giggs ended his glittering playing career at the end of last season to take up the role of assistant manager to new United boss Louis van Gaal.

Scholes and Butt joined Phil Neville in assisting Giggs while he was in temporary charge for the final four games of the season, but it is unclear if they will continue to have any coaching involvement at United.

Salford are currently in the Northern Premier League  First Division North, tier eight of the English football pyramid.

"It is unlike any season we have had," said Baird. "It is absolutely crazy. There have been new players coming in, a new training regime, new kit - there is a real buzz about the club."
