World Cup 2014: England's highs and lows

BBC Sport looks back at England's mixed fortunes at World Cups from years gone by, from Bobby Moore lifting the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966 to the team's 4-1 humiliation against Germany in 2010.

Gary Lineker's hat-trick against Poland helped him win the coveted Golden Boot in 1986, but England were knocked out by Argentina, in a match during which Diego Maradona scored his infamous 'Hand of God' goal.

England reached the semi-finals in Italy in 1990, but lost on penalties to West Germany. They also exited France 98 on spot-kicks, but not before an 18-year-old Michael Owen netted a superb solo goal against Argentina.
