It's time to say farewell. What an unpredictable weekend of European action. Who would have thought that Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich would suffer a second straight league defeat? And what about Barcelona's defeat at lowly Granada? Any news of Diego Costa's injury will appear on the BBC Sport website which will also feature updates of Wednesday's Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Thanks for your company. It's been fun. Until next time.

  2. 20:15:
    Getafe 0-2 Atletico Madrid
    Stats

And here are the final statistics from the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. Atletico enjoyed more possession and more shots than their hosts. What the stats don't reveal is that there were six yellow cards and one red card in what was an ill-tempered Madrid derby.

We know Atletico are three points clear at the top of the table. But Getafe's third defeat in four games leaves them one point from safety in 18th spot with five matches remaining.

A Captive Bird: Losing Diego Costa was not part of Atletico Madrid's plan. I hope it's not serious for the guy.

  4. 20:02:
    La Liga table

So what next in the La Liga title race? While Real Madrid and Barcelona battle it out in the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday, Atletico have a full week to prepare for their next match at home to Elche, who are 15th in the table, next Saturday.

Barca's next league game is at home to Athletic Bilbao next Sunday, while Real Madrid have a break next weekend. Their next league match is at home to Osasuna on 26 April.

Mathias Ekohinmi: My problem with Atletico Madrid is that they have no weaknesses. As a Chelsea fan, I should be worried.

Olowokandi Femi: Diego Simeone is a genius. He is the man of the moment.

David Sarpong: Diego Simeone has taken Atletico to another level.

  6. 19:49:
    FULL-TIME- Getafe 0-2 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid's charge towards the La Liga title goes on. Atletico's travelling fans are in good voice but manager Diego Simeone will be anxious for news of his key striker's injury. Questions are already being asked if Diego Costa will play again this season.

  7. 19:47:
    Getafe 0-2 Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is carried off on a stretcher

Television replays of the incident that led to Diego Costa being carried off on a stretcher make ugly viewing. The player is already in an ambulance on his way to hospital.

  8. 19:46:
    Getafe 0-2 Atletico Madrid

Into the final minute and Atletico are going three points clear at the top of La Liga. But at a cost.

  9. 19:39:
GOAL- Getafe 0-2 Atletico Madrid - Diego Costa (83mins)

A bitter sweet moment for Atletico. Adrian's low cross into the six-yard area sees Diego Costa stretch out his left leg to divert the ball over the line. But in doing so, Costa collides with a post and looks in serious pain. The Spain international is unable to celebrate and remain motionless on the floor.

On comes a stretcher and after a few minutes attention, the player is carried off with pain etched across his face. That does not look good.

  10. 19:36:
YELLOW CARD- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Into the final 10 minutes and Atletico are edging towards the three points they so desperately crave. But will they finish this ill-tempered derby with 11 players on the pitch? Diego Costa, who has been targeted by Getafe's players from the very first minute, sends Juan Rodriguez crashing to the floor after the Getafe players deliberately stands on his foot. Costa is booked. So that's six yellows and one red. . .

  11. 19:29:
    Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Atletico continue to dominate but they still only have a one goal advantage. A free-kick on the edge of the Getafe area falls to Diego Costa but his goal-bound effort strikes team-mate Mario Suarez and goes out for a goal-kick.

Sean Fleming: Atletico's season is much like Liverpool's. No-one expected either to be up there, and it'd be amazing if they could both do it.

  13. 19:20:
ATLETICO MISS PENALTY- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Suddenly this derby explodes into life. Getafe are reduced to 10 men after Angel Lafita drags down Adrian on the edge of the six-yard area and Atletico get a chance to seal the points from the penalty spot.

Up steps Diego Costa but his effort is brilliantly kept out by Jordi Codina before the Getafe keeper climbs to his feet to stop the rebound by Raul Garcia. How costly could that miss prove to Atletico?

Earlier we asked how Atletico have been transformed from also-rans into title challengers - and you think it is largely down to one man.

Anirudh: It's down to manager Diego Simeone and partly the fact the squad has come of age. Many quality players bought cheaply by excellent scouting.

Bannerman: Diego Simeone. He's won the Europa League and Super Cup with Atletico already.

  15. 19:15:
    Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Getafe are enjoying their best spell of the game. Adrian Colunga, unmarked and inside the area, tests Thibaut Courtois this time but it is too tame for the Atletico keeper. If Getafe are to get anything from this then they need to make chances like that count.

  16.

Mark Onyango Ojuok: Diego Simeone is a brilliant coach, very good tactical awareness, he is the reason for Atletico's success

  17. 19:12:
GREAT SAVE!- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

He's had little to do so far but Atletico's on-loan Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois comes to his side's rescue to keep out a free header by Juan Rodriguez. That was a fine stop from close range by the 21-year-old, who is gearing up to face his parent club in the Champions League semi-final.

  18. 19:07:
YELLOW CARD- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Another caution - the fourth of the game - this time to Getafe's Angel Lafita for a clumsy challenge on Gabi.

  19. 19:07:
    Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

This has hardly been a classic. But Diego Simeone will not care. His Atletico side have reached the stage where results are more important than anything else. And Atletico continue to lead. Getafe have rarely threatened, with most of the play in the centre of the pitch.

  20. 19:02:
    KICK-OFF- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

And we're back under way. Atletico are 45 minutes away from opening up a three point lead at the top of La Liga.

  21. 19:01:
    Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid
    Stats

And here are the statistics from the first half at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. This is the 26th time that Atletico have taken the lead. They have gone on to win 23 of the previous 25 times.

  22. 18:58:
    BBC Sport's Gary Lineker

29 goals in seven games in Serie A today! Italian football has lost its way.

  23. 18:55:
    Italian Serie AFULL-TIME

Who said Italian football was boring? Not on Sunday's evidence it isn't. Here's what happened in Serie A earlier. . .

    Bologna 1-1 Parma

    Hellas Verona 3-5 Fiorentina

    Livorno 2-4 Chievo Verona

    Napoli 4-2 Lazio

    Sampdoria 0-4 Inter

    Torino 2-1 Genoa

  24. 18:51:
    Italian Serie AFULL-TIME

While the three-way Spanish title race continues to keep the watching world on the edge of their seats, things appear to be cut and dried across the Mediterranean Sea in Italy.

Juventus, who travel to Udinese on Monday, are well on course to win their third straight Scudetto, with nearest rivals Roma looking assured of second after Saturday's win against Atalanta.

So Sunday is was left to Rafa Benitez's Napoli side to cement third spot, which they did as Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain's hat-trick helped them to a 4-2 home win against Lazio. Elsewhere, fourth-placed Fiorentina and Inter Milan in fifth boosted their own European qualification hopes with high-scoring away wins.

  25. 18:48:
    HALF-TIME- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

A feisty end to the first half continues after the half-time whistle. Plenty of gesturing and verbals are being dished out between the two sets of players as they make their way down the tunnel. Never mind all that - Atletico are ahead, that is the key detail. As it stands they are going three points clear at the top of La Liga.

  26. 18:46:
YELLOW CARD- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Referee David Borbalan is earning his money in this match. This time David Villa loses his cool as the Atletico forward sends Juan Rodriguez crashing to the turf after a confrontation between the pair. Villa can count himself fortunate only to see yellow. It's already a warm day in Madrid. But the temperature is rising in the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

  28. 18:40:
GOAL- Getafe 0-1 Atletico Madrid - Diego Godin (40mins)
    Getafe v Atletico Madrid

Hands up. Who had Diego Godín down for first goal? Me neither. The big Uruguay defender takes advantage of some poor positioning by keeper Jordi Codina, who is in no man's land, after Juanfran's lofted ball into the Getafe area. That was a gift.

Atletico Madrid finished 24 points behind La Liga winners Barcelona last season. Now they are eyeing a La Liga-Champions League double. So who - or what - is responsible for their remarkable transformation. Is it down to manager Diego Simeone's management or should the credit go forwards Diego Costa and David Villa. What about the form of Thibaut Courtois, who is on loan from Chelsea?

  30. 18:37:
    Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Diego Costa's picked the right match to make his return from injury. The Spain international is already looking Atletico's most likely source to break the deadlock. He sets off on another powerful run deep into Getafe's half before leaving a couple of defenders trailing in his wake after bursting into the area.

But he cannot get his shot away and the chance is gone. Are we going to see a goal in this half?

Rian Hoskins: Atletico have such a strong starting XI but decent depth as well. Wonder how many will still be there next season though?

  32. 18:31:
GREAT SAVE!- Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Fine save by Getafe keeper Jordi Codina who keeps out a goal-bound header by Diego Godín following Gabi's floated free-kick. Best effort of a tightly-fought derby so far. Atletico are beginning to flex their muscles.

  33. 18:27:
YELLOW CARD- Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid
    Diego Costa

Diego Costa, just back from injury, is being targeted by Getafe. He looks less than impressed as he is hacked down by Getafe midfielder Pedro Mosquera near the halfway line. Out comes another yellow card. Costa dusts himself down but is to his feet for no more than a minute when he is brought down again by but Alexis Ruano. Another caution. This is already descending into a bruising derby.

  34. 18:21:
    Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico have the ball in the back of the net through David Villa. But Atletico's celebrations are cut short by a flag, with Diego Costa adjudged to have wandered into an off-side position.

  35. 18:19:
YELLOW CARD- Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid
    Atletico Madrid

Lots of free-kicks in a scrappy opening and referee David Borbalan's patience has run out. He reaches for his top pocket to produce a yellow card after Atletico's Uruguay defender Diego Godín cynically brings down striker Ciprian Marica.

  36.

Opta Jose: Getafe have lost all four Madrid derbies this season, scoring just one goal. Atletico have won four of their five, scoring 19.

  37. 18:12:
    Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid

It's really no surprise that Atletico have not repeated the lightning start they made against Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek. They were ahead in the opening five minutes against their La Liga rivals but this has been a steady, patient beginning at a packed Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

  38. 18:08:
    Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Diego Costa is clearly determined to make up for lost time. The game is just a couple of minutes old when David Villa produces a powerful run down the left wing before his intended cross for Costa is just too strong for the striker. It's been a bright start by Atletico.

  39. 18:02:
    KICK-OFF- Getafe 0-0 Atletico Madrid

The sun is out. It's a beautiful sunny evening in Madrid and the players are ready. And off we go.

  40. 18:00:
Getafe v Atletico Madrid (18:00 BST)

Do Getafe have any chance against an Atletico Madrid side buoyed by a midweek win over Barcelona that secured their passage into the semi-finals of the Champions League?

Well, the Azulones were hammered 7-0 in the reverse fixture back in November, while they have also lost heavily at the hands of Real Madrid and Barcelona this season. They are managed by former Romania international Cosmin Contra, who had a loan spell at West Brom as a player in the 2004-05 season.

  41. 17:57:
Getafe v Atletico Madrid (18:00 BST)

So, the big team news from the Coliseum Alfonso Perez is that striker Diego Costa is back after missing Atletico Madrid's last two matches with a muscle injury. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is set to face his parent club Chelsea in next week's Champions League semi-final, starts as does David Villa.

  42. 17:52:
Getafe v Atletico Madrid (18:00 BST)
    La Liga table

It's a title race that has gripped Europe. Three teams divided by one point. But it is advantage Atletico, who have a game in hand on their rivals. It is 10 years since a club other than Real Madrid and Barcelona won La Liga. Back in 2004, Rafael Benitez's Valencia finished five points clear at the top.

It is 18 years since Atletico staged a title-winning party. Diego Simeone was part of the team then. Can the 43-year-old Argentine repeat the feat as Atletico's manager?

  43. 17:50:
    LINE-UPS

Getafe: Codina, Arroyo, Alexis, Rafa, Roberto Lago, Juan Rodriguez, Mosquera, Pedro Lopez, Lafita, Diego Castro, Ciprian. Subs: Lopez, Lacen, Sarabia, Colunga, Cruz Campos, Fernandez, Jacobi.

Atletico: Courtois, Juanfran, Godín, Miranda, Filipe Luis, Gabi, Mario, Raul Garcíi, Koke, Villa, Costa. Subs: Aranzubia, Tiago, Adrian, Rodriguez, Alderweireld, Diego, Sosa.

    Referee: David Borbalan.

  44. 17:49:
Getafe v Atletico Madrid (18:00 BST)

Hello! It might be marathon day in London, but it's derby day in Madrid where leaders Atletico can open up a three point lead at the top if they win at neighbours Getafe, who are third-from-bottom in the table. It should be straight forward. But that's what they said before Barcelona's game at Granada on Saturday.

  45. 17:45:
    Atletico Madrid

They were the outsiders on the starting line. Few batted an eyelid as they kept up with Barcelona's pace at the midway stage. But as the finishing line to the marathon that is the La Liga title race appears on the horizon, Atletico Madrid show no sign of slowing up. While heavyweights Real Madrid have been playing catch-up and reigning champions Barcelona stumble, Los Rojiblancos appear calm and composed.

Will Atletico break out in a sweat on the final home straight? Or will they continue to out-pace their opponents as they have done for most of the season both at home and in Europe? The podium is in sight. And Diego Simeone's men are in the race of their lives.
