That's it for this week's La Liga text commentary. What a day - three out of three for Spain's top three. Join us on Sunday for Napoli v Juventus in Serie A at 19:45 BST. That's right - BST.

  2. 22:57:

There are more La Liga matches on Sunday, but the big boys move on to week 32 of this fascinating season.

Next Saturday, Atletico host Villarreal (15:00 BST), Barcelona are at home to Real Betis (17:00 BST) and Real Madrid are at Real Sociedad (19:00 BST).

  3. 22:51:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano

Real were not entirely dominant, but were at their lethal best in attack. Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale once again looked like the thoroughbreds we know so well. And Gareth didn't once have to tie his shoelaces today.

So the table sees Atletico Madrid top with 76 points from 31 games, Barcelona with 75 and Real with 73.

  4. 22:48:
Spanish La LigaFULL-TIME- Real Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano

The ref blows for full-time. Real are back knee deep in the title race.

  5. 22:46:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano

Rayo's Razvan Rat looks like a drowned...

  6. 22:41:
Spanish La LigaHi five!- Real Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano

There are about five minutes of the match remaining. Isco heads two yards wide from a free-kick - that was Real's 29th effort on goal tonight.

  7. 22:40:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano

There is an almighty scramble in the Rayo area, which finishes with Pepe's blockbuster shot blocked on the line. Carnage!

  8. 22:40:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano

Rayo will play for 10 men for the last few minutes as Jose Carlos comes off injured.

  9. 22:34:
Spanish La LigaGOLAZO!- Real Madrid 5-0 Rayo Vallecano - Alvaro Morata (78 mins)

Alvaro Morata, who just came on for Karim Benzema, curls in a delightful shot from 16 yards. It was one you knew was going in once it left his boot. Lovely.

  10. 22:32:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 4-0 Rayo Vallecano

How dare you upstage me Gareth? Cristiano Ronaldo goes for a spectacular volley at the far post but the ball sails high and wide and ends up in Gran Via.

  11. 22:26:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Real Madrid 4-0 Rayo Vallecano - Gareth Bale (70 mins)
    Gareth Bale

When it rains's that man Gareth Bale again. He huffs and puffs all the way from just outside his own area to fire in past Rayo keeper Ruben. That's his 12th league goal of the season. The only sore note is that the rain has played havoc with his hair tonight :(

  12. 22:25:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Real Madrid 3-0 Rayo Vallecano - Gareth Bale (68 mins)

Provider becomes scorer or something. This time Angel Di Maria, who is also an assist specialist, sprints down the left and threads the ball through to the Welsh wonder Gareth Bale, who taps in.

Sam Dunne: Real Madrid could've done with playing Wolves today. So many empty seats at the Bernabeu

  14. 22:20:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Real Madrid 2-0 Rayo Vallecano

Jonathan Viera's free-kick from 20 yards flies three inches wide of Diego Lopez's left-hand upright. It might have been two inches.

  15. 22:18:
Spanish La LigaSUBSTITUTION- Real Madrid 2-0 Rayo Vallecano

Defensive midfielder Asier Illarramendi is off for a hot bath and on comes Real attacking midfielder Isco.

  16. 22:15:
Spanish La LigaSUBSTITUTION- Real Madrid 2-0 Rayo Vallecano

Rayo make another change - forward Alberto Bueno is off and Jonathan Viera is on.

  17. 22:11:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Real Madrid 2-0 Rayo Vallecano - Dani Carvajal (55 mins)
    Pepe and Dani Carvajal (right)

Well, that came from a wee mistake from Rayo about 40 yards from goal. Gareth Bale aimed a pass from the right into the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo who teed up Dani Carvajal. The right-back guided his shot in from 12 yards. That's his first goal for Real - he said he would shave his beard if he scored, apparently.

Mozil: For once LaLiiga is so interesting! Barca vs Atletico on the final day of the season. Title decider?

  19. 22:09:
    Italian Serie AMilan 3-0 Chievo
    Mario Balotelli

Meanwhile, in Italy... another victory for AC Milan in Serie A as they beat Chievo 3-0. Kaka helped himself to two goals, while Mario Balotelli was on the scoresheet.

A second win on the bounce means Milan move up to the heady heights of ninth and things are looking pretty rosey for coach Clarence Seedorf.

  20. 22:07:
Spanish La LigaKARATE!- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

Sergio Ramos just performed a manoeuvre that was once seen on 1985 fighting-themed computer game Yie Ar Kung Fu. Fortunately for Rayo's Joaquin Larrivey - Ramos's foot just brushed his head.

  21. 22:01:
Spanish La LigaKICK-OFF- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

We are back under way - it's still a bit wet in Madrid.

  22. 21:59:
Spanish La LigaAS IT STANDS- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

As it stands, Real Madrid stay third with 73 points, two points behind second-placed Barcelona, with Atletico leading the pack on 76 points. Atletico and Barcelona face each other on the final day of the season. Yeah, that's right.

Spanish La LigaHALF-TIME- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

Referee Carlos Delgado Ferreiro didn't really allocate much stoppage time. Real have the lead at half-time at a very wet Bernabeu.

What did you think of that?

And also, following Gareth Bale kicking the turf as he was about to shoot, do you recall any other climactic howlers?

Brian McDonald: Top 3 La Liga side still in the Champs League, El Clasico Copa del Rey final & potential last day title decider! AMAZING!

Rob Kershaw: For once La Liga is exciting to watch, and even if Real don't win tonight you just can't rule them out of the title race.

  27. 21:42:
Spanish La LigaPOOR- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

...Jose Carlos elects to shoot and it flies well wide. His team-mates did not look impressed. Three minutes before the half-time .

  28. 21:41:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

Rayo have free-kick on the right, 30 yards from goal...

  29. 21:37:

Gareth Bale's through on goal - surely, surely, surely... no he kicks the turf and falls over.

Adersh: Gareth bale won't be considered a success unless he scores more, he needs to emulate Ronaldo to win the critics over.

Duncan Mciver: Don't give up on the Bale-Benzema-Cristiano just yet ! Remember Real would have beaten Barca last week with 11 men.

  31. 21:33:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

Sergio Ramos makes arguably the best defensive diving header of the season to prevent Joaquin Larrivey from stealing in at the far post.

  32. 21:30:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

Back to the action. Striker Karim Benzema somehow fails to convert Gareth Bale's square ball from the left. That would have been the £85m Welshman's 13 assist in the league this season.

  33. 21:26:
Spanish La LigaSUBSTITUTION- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

An early substitution by Rayo. Blackburn forward Ruben Rochina is off and is replaced by Jose Carlos.

  34. 21:22:
Spanish La LigaSTAT ATTACK- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

    Right stat fans:

Ronaldo became the first player in La Liga to score in six consecutive games this season.

Ronaldo has now scored in nine consecutive matches.

Ronaldo has now scored 28 goals in La Liga this season.

  35. 21:16:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano - Cristiano Ronaldo (14 mins)
    Cristiano Ronaldo

There you go. Quick as a flash, Cristiano Ronaldo latches on to Gareth Bale's through-ball in the area, drifts inside before placing his low shot into the keeper's bottom right. That's Bale two millionth assist and Ronaldo's umpteenth goal. More accurate stats to follow.

  36. 21:15:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Real Madrid 1-0 Rayo Vallecano

Real defender Fabio Coentrao finds some space down the left and fizzes in a cross that Vallecano midfielder Roberto Trashorras does well to turn behind... Real are cranking up the pressure.

  37. 21:11:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 0-0 Rayo Vallecano

Real started well but La Liga's 12th-placed team have come back into it. This is what coach Paco Jemez said in the lead-up to the match:

"Of course we have a chance of winning [at the Bernabeu].

"I can't think of a better stage on which to compete, and if anyone thinks that we are going to relax is wrong.

"We will go there to play and if we concede seven it will be because they are better, but we will compete and enjoy the match."

Jack Morris: Well in Atleti! Over to you Real.

  39. 21:04:
Spanish La LigaGREAT SAVE!- Real Madrid 0-0 Rayo Vallecano

Karim Benzema should have put that one away. Ruben makes a good low save to block the Frenchman's shot from six yards. The striker limps away from the scene, but he appears to be OK. By the way Rat fans, Razvan Rat, formerly of West Ham, is playing.

  40. 21:01:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid 0-0 Rayo Vallecano

    We are under way.

  41. 21:00:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid v Rayo Vallecano (21:00 GMT)

Real Madrid should win this, obviously, but Vallecano have collected 13 points from the last 15. Surely coach Carlo Ancelotti's men won't suffer another loss?

  42. 20:58:
LINE-UPS- Real Madrid v Rayo Vallecano (21:00 GMT)

Real Madrid XI: Diego Lopez, Pepe, Ramos, Coentrao, Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale, Alonso, Carvajal, Di Maria, Illarra

Rayo Vallecano XI: Ruben, Arbilla, Ze, Borja, Rat, Saul, Trashorras, Falque, Rochina, Bueno, Larrivey

  43. 20:55:
Spanish La LigaReal Madrid v Rayo Vallecano (21:00 GMT)
    Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo

Here's the team news. Cristiano Ronaldo starts. There were doubts over the main man's fitness with reports claiming he had discomfort in his knee, but he is in the starting XI alongside his 'BBC' forward colleagues Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

  44. 20:53:
Real Madrid v Rayo Vallecano (21:00 GMT)

Thanks Gary. It's Saj here. Two successive league defeats for Real means they find themselves hanging on to the coattails of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona having been title favourites only a fortnight ago.

This is more of a 'must win' than the last 'must win' against Sevilla, which they lost.

So why don't you ease The Voice to one side and crank up the European football live text jukebox.

This promises to be a cracker.

  45. 20:51:
    Spanish La Liga

The baton is now handed over to Real Madrid, who surely must take three points against Rayo Vallecano tonight or, dare we say it, their title challenge is over? I'll hand over to my colleague Saj Chowdhury to take you through the rest of the action as Ronaldo, Bale et al take centre stage.

  46. 20:49:
Spanish La LigaFULL-TIME- Athletic Bilbao 1-2 Atletico Madrid

That is it. All over and a massive three points for Atletico Madrid. They return to the top of the table and undoubtedly huge sighs of frustrations from Real Madrid and Barcelona supporters across Spain as Atletico just keep on rolling.

Diego Costa has more than played his part in what could be an important win for Atletico Madrid if they can hold. The Spain striker is taken off with David Villa coming on for the final few minutes.

  49. 20:40:
Spanish La LigaRED CARD for Athletic Bilbao

A hill just turned into a mountain for Athletic Bilbao as they are reduced to 10 men, Aymeric Laporte is shown a second yellow after bringing down Diego Costa when he was about to run clean through.

Ikz: Come on Athletic Bilbao, even a draw against Atletico Madrid will keep FC Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

  51. 20:37:
Spanish La LigaGREAT SAVE!- Athletic Bilbao 1-2 Atletico Madrid

This could well prove to be a title-winning save! Substitute Gaizka Toquero has reinvigorated the home side since coming on and, moments after he had a reasonable call for a penalty waved away, he crosses for Aritz Aduriz and his header seems destined for the back of the net but somehow Thibaut Courtois superbly gets a hand to it to push the ball over. Fantastic stuff.

  52. 20:30:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-2 Atletico Madrid

It has all gone a bit nervy at the moment with chances none existent. Atletico Madrid are whacking a few long balls into the area but Bilbao are dealing with them better at the moment. Just over 15 minutes remaining.

Paul Thompson: As a neutral, I speak for most people when I say that I cheered when that Atletico goal went in! They can really win the title.

  54. 20:19:
Italian Serie ALatest scores- AC Milan 2-0 Chievo

Have Milan turned the corner in what has been a torrid season? They are languishing in midtable but Clarence Seedorf looks set to oversee a second successive win as Kaka adds a second goal against Chievo.

  55. 20:15:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Arda Turan enters the fray for Atletico Madrid just before Oscar de Marcos has Chelsea loanee Thibaut Courtois scrambling with a deflected shot that loops up and onto the sidenetting. Atletico won't feel comfortable until they get a third.

  56. 20:10:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Athletic Bilbao 1-2 Atletico Madrid - Koke (55 mins)

Massive, massive goal for Atletico, just as Athletic Bilbao had started to frustrate the visitors. Koke creates and scores it, first feeding a pass to Filipe Luis and though his cross deflects off a defender, Koke stoops in to head home.

Chelsea Forever: I fancy Atlectico Madrid to grind out results but Real & Barca to slip up in the run in.

Jonny: No team has won an away league match at the new San Mames yet - a win for Atleti would be massive.

  58. 20:02:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Athletic Bilbao are playing a dangerous game with their high defensive line and Diego Costa almost makes them pay seconds into the second half. He rampages after another long ball that catches out three defenders but pokes his shot just wide of the far post. Let off for the home side.

  59. 20:00:
Spanish La LigaKICK-OFF- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Atletico Madrid

The players are back out on the pitch, the referee blows his whistle and off we go for the second half.

    Thiago Alcantara

Bayern Munich wrapped up the title with a record seven games to spare in midweek and appeared to be suffering from a slight hangover as they experienced only their third draw in the league this season - 3-3 at home to Hoffenheim.

Claudio Pizarro scored twice, while Swiss wing Xherdan Shaqiri grabbed the other. Anthony Modeste, Sejad Salihovic and Roberto Firmino scored for the visitors.

Bayern's next game is at Manchester United on Tuesday, but they will be without midfielder Thiago Alcantara who suffered a knee injury that will rule him out for four weeks.

  61. 19:54:
Italian Serie AAC Milan 1-0 Chievo

AC Milan, the Manchester United of Serie A according to coach Clarence Seedorf, are in action tonight as they host Chievo. The end to a disappointing season cannot come quick enough for the 18-times Italian champions, who are 12th in the standings, but they have just taken the lead with Mario Balotelli bagging the goal.

  62. 19:52:
Andy West, European football writerEspanyol 0-1 Barcelona

"Barcelona were given a distinctly uncomfortable afternoon by their local neighbours, and the outcome could have been very different if Espanyol striker Pizzi had shown more composure with one of his two excellent first-half chances.

"Messi was largely well shackled but - for the second consecutive weekend - he showed great composure to slot home the winning penalty. It wasn't pretty, but Barca have overcome a major obstacle in the title race."

  63. 19:50:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-1 Atletico Madrid

It is tough to say which way this game will go. Athletic Bilbao are looking determined but the better chances have belonged to Atletico, with Diego Costa looking particularly dangerous.

While it is half time, let's have a quick look at what has happened in some of today's other games....

Duncan Mciver: Tricky game tonight for Atletico tonight. A win is a big step towards the title. Apart from an interesting final game season.

  65. 19:45:
Spanish La LigaHALF-TIME- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Effectively the "best of the rest", fourth-place Athletic Bilbao are showing they will be no pushovers tonight. They look confident on the ball and are passing it around nicely as they probe for openings. The Atletico defence is coping well though as the half time whistle blows.

Tom Kruse: Atleti are attacking Bilbao and it is not a surprise if they win. Expect Real Madrid to slip up again in the title race.

  67. 19:36:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Atletico Madrid

A brilliant opportunity for Atletico Madrid to go ahead as Diego Costa races away down the left before edging into the Bilbao area. He cleverly back-heels into the path of Filipe Luis and the defender puts it on a plate for Raul Garcia with a clipped cross, but he proceeds to lash the ball well over.

  68. 19:27:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-1 Atletico Madrid

A chorus of boos as Diego Costa thumps into the back of a defender when challenging for a header inside the home side's area. The big man is certainly making his presence known and is looking lively.

  69. 19:21:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Atletico Madrid - Diego Costa (21 mins)

You don't give Diego Costa too many bites of the cherry and not expect him to gobble it up. An Athletic Bilbao defender plays a poor pass that is intercepted by Koke, who in turns finds Costa and the 32-goal striker powers his way goalwards before placing the ball into the net.

  70. 19:15:
Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Golden chance for Atletico Madrid to restore parity as Diego Costa is sent clear through on goal courtesy of Koke's sumptuous pass. Costa has just Gorka Iraizoz to beat but the 32-goal striker uncharacteristically places his shot too close to the Bilbao keeper, who makes the save.

  71. 19:10:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone has assembled a cracking Atletico Madrid side that is compact, organised and hard to beat but I have to say I am surprised he has opted to leave Arda Turan on the bench tonight. The Turkish midfielder has been outstanding in recent games. He might be getting an earlier introduction than expected if they are unable to reply swiftly to Athletic Bilbao's early opener.

  72. 19:06:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Atletico Madrid - Iker Muniain (6 mins)
    Iker Munian

Well, well, well. This is not going according to script! Athletic Bilbao take the lead with their first meaningful attack as Mikel San Jose smacks a long pass down the field that Iker Munian chases. He gets to the ball first and lifts the ball over the onrushing Thibaut Courtois.

  73. 19:00:
Spanish La LigaKICK-OFF- Athletic Bilbao v Atletico Madrid (19:00 GMT)

It is packed to the rafters at the San Mames Stadium as Athletic Bilbao get this game up and running.

  75. 18:57:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao v Atletico Madrid (19:00 GMT)

So, back to Atletico Madrid. It is 10 years since a side other than Real Madrid or Barcelona won La Liga. Ten years since Valencia broke the Real-Barcelona duopoly and won the title to leave their manager - a clean shaven, fresh-faced Rafael Benitez - grinning from ear-to-ear.

Now, Atletico Madrid are on the verge of a once-in-a-decade feat, beating the two powerhouses of Spanish football to the championship. Can they? What an achievement if they are able to do it.

  76. 18:53:
    Spanish La Liga

Barcelona edged Espanyol earlier on Saturday, with that man Lionel Messi bagging a penalty, and they are currently top of the table with 75 points.

But their stay could once again be a short one. A win for Atletico at Athletic Bilbao will move them one point clear and will also heap more pressure on Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti's side take centre stage at 21:00 GMT when they host Rayo Vallecano. Can they avoid defeat for the third successive game and keep alive their title challenge?

  77. 18:50:
    Spanish La Liga

Hello! Welcome to our latest venture into the exciting world of European football. Bayern Munich have the Bundesliga wrapped up, Juventus and Paris St-Germain are all but champions in Italy and France respectively but in Spain's La Liga, once lambasted for not being competitive enough, it is all very much still to play for.

  78. 19:45:
Spanish La LigaTo me, to you!
    Chuckle Brothers

To borrow an iconic catchphrase from mid-1990s comedic luminaries The Chuckle Brothers, it is "to me, to you" at the top of the La Liga table, with the leaders ever changing.

Real Madrid spent two months at the top of the pile but their recent mini-slump means Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have been taking it in turns to occupy first place.

At the moment it is advantage Barcelona but Atletico, this season's surprise package, have been relentless. In a few moments time, they go for a fifth successive win at Athletic Bilbao. Can they secure the win to go back on top and put them in the driving seat for title? That is what we are here to find out...
