Football mourns death of Linfield great Alex Russell

Local football is mourning the death of Linfield great Alex Russell, whose funeral will be held on Friday morning, following his death on Monday, aged 91.

The former Blues goalkeeper made over 600 appearances for the club, winning 39 medals, and chalked up 30 years of service to Linfield in various roles.

In 2004 and for several years thereafter, the Kop Stand was named the Alex Russell Stand.

His funeral will be held in Glengormley Presbyterian Church at 11:00 GMT.

Alex, who won five Irish League winners' medals, passed away in hospital after a short illness.

He was voted fifth in a newspaper poll of the 25 Greatest All-Time Linfield players by a judging panel which included Linfield chairman Jim Kerr and Dr Malcolm Brodie MBE.
