As it happened

  1. 22:13:

Barcelona and Real Madrid are bound to have something to say about Atletico's cheeky move to the top of the table. Spain big guns are not used to having their superiority challenged and we will see how they react in the coming weeks.

For now, thanks for your company and your interaction and we will see you soon. Good night.

  2. 22:09:

So what have we learnt after another weekend of football in Europe?

Firstly, it seems as though no one can stop Juventus' march towards the Serie A title as they beat Inter 3-1 to move nine points clear of Roma at the top.

But things look far less clear cut in the race for the La Liga title as Atletico Madrid move top for the first time since 1996. Diego Simeone's men continue to show they are real challengers to Barcelona and Real Madrid.

  3. 22:06:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid

Having just seen a replay of Cristiano Ronaldo's straight red card you have to say it was extremely, extremely soft. Defender Carlos Gurpegi should be a tad embarrassed at the way he has thrown himself to the ground after Ronaldo's hand wafted towards him.

Having said that, I'm sure we all remember Ronaldo's wink and enthusiastic falling over to get Wayne Rooney sent off in the 2006 World Cup. What goes around comes around I guess.

AdamBunnage: I do believe Atletico Madrid deserve to be top of La Liga tonight, they've played some really good football!

Peter Louis: What Diego has done at Atletico is amazing! To top la Liga and compete w/ Real and Barca shows how good a manager he is.

Wale ibraheem: Valencia beat Barca at home, Bilbao holding Madrid, Atletico on top of the league. No more two horse race.

  5. 21:59:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid
    Cristiano Ronaldo

That is a very good point Andrew. If Cristiano Ronaldo's red card is adjudged to have been for violent play, he could well be staring at a three-match ban.

How would Real do without their talisman? I guess we will soon see.

Andrew from Richhill on text via 81111: What a brilliant weekend it's been for Atletico Madrid. A 4-0 home victory, Barcelona lost at home and now Real Madrid have dropped 2 points AND lost their talismanic striker to suspension. Atletico 3 points clear at the top of La Liga in February! Who predicted that one!?

  7. 21:57:
Spanish La LigaAtletico lead by three points
    La Liga

The big winners tonight though are undoubtedly Atletico Madrid, who sit top of La Liga by three points.

Real Madrid miss a chance to go above Barcelona into second but, level on points with their rivals, the title race seems to be on track for an exciting finish.

  8. 21:51:
Spanish La LigaFULL-TIME- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid

A thrilling end to what was largely a game dominated by defences. The headlines will be about Cristiano Ronaldo's red card as Athletic Bilbao's ubeaten home league record continues.

Real's players leave the pitch surrounding the referee, obviously upset by Ronaldo's dismissal, but when the dust settles they will know it isn't a bad point.

  9. 21:48:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid

The game has calmed down as Real Madrid take the steam out of things. We have three minutes of injury time and both teams will probably be fairly happy with the point.

    Ronaldo red card

The Athletic Bilbao fans have come alive as they start to believe they can record a rare win over Real Madrid. The hosts are piling forward now.

  13. 21:39:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid

After Jese's goal on his full debut, Real Madrid looked as though they would cruise to victory.

Now, they are suddenly hanging on to a point and will have to do so without Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the field after his straight red card with a rueful smile.

Nine minutes left for either side to get the winner.

  14. 21:39:
Italian Serie AFULL-TIME- Juventus 3-1 Inter Milan

That was fairly routine for Juve, who are now nine points clear of second-placed Roma at the top of Serie A. That was also their 11th successive win at home in the league. We officially declare that Antonio Conte is doing a good job.

  15. 21:36:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid

It has to be said Athletic Bilbao's Carlos Gurpegi has made an awful lot of that. Cristiano Ronaldo was daft -and that's being kind - to waft his hands towards the defender's face, but there was no need for Gurpegi to go down like that.

Ronaldo was over-reacting to a gentle shove and he should know the dangers of lashing out - even though he barely connects.

What a chance for Bilbao to snatch a win.

Spanish La LigaRED CARD- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo is sent off for raising his hands. It is all kicking off.

  19. 21:31:

There are two minutes remaining in the match in Turin.

  20. 21:31:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Athletic Bilbao 1-1 Real Madrid - Ibai Gomez (73 mins)

That wasn't in the script for Real Madrid as their lead is quickly cancelled out.

Substitute Ibai Gomez whips in a free-kick with his first touch and, after the ball is cleared, he fires in a leveller with his second touch. Brilliant finish.

  21. 21:29:
Italian Serie APOOR!- Juventus 3-1 Inter Milan

Rodrigo Palacio has had a right incubo tonight - that is Italian for a 'nightmare'. Inter's Argentine striker, who has wasted two other good chances, heads over from six yards. Poor, very poor.

  22. 21:29:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 0-1 Real Madrid

Spanish La LigaGOAL- Athletic Bilbao 0-1 Real Madrid - Jese (66 mins)

What a full debut for 20-year-old striker Jese as he gives Real Madrid a crucial lead.

He can't really miss though as Cristiano Ronaldo rolls the ball into his path across the face of goal. Jese simply sticks out his right foot and diverts the ball into the net.

  27. 21:22:

  29. 21:19:

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Real are coming on strong now. Xabi Alonso fires wildly over the bar after a loose defensive header from Bilbao.

They are still struggling to get Cristiano Ronaldo into the game though as, whenever the Portuguese gets the ball, he finds midfielder Ander Iturraspe in close proximity.

  30. 21:16:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 0-0 Real Madrid

Would Real Madrid be too disappointed with a draw at Athletic Bilbao? There are few tougher places to travel to in La Liga but Los Blancos are certainly not settling for the point.

  31. 21:14:
Italian Serie AGOAL- Juventus 3-1 Inter Milan - Rolando (71 mins) still doesn't look like it's going to Inter's day... but defender Rolando gives them a glimmer, just a glimmer of hope with a low angled strike that easily beats Marco Storari in the Juve goal.

He can wag his finger all he likes but the decision was spot on.

    Luka Modric

You get the feeling Real Madrid can't be as bad as they were in the first half as Luke Modric sees an early strike from 20 yards comfortably saved by goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz.

As for the Champions League, I can't see past Bayern Munich or Manchester City for it. Barcelona's time at the top is over.

  38. 21:02:
Spanish La LigaKICK-OFF- Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Real Madrid

What a game is in store on Wednesday as Real Madrid play city rivals and La Liga leaders Atletico in the Copa del Ray semi-final.

That will be the last thing on Carlo Ancelotti's mind at the moment though as his side look for way to become the first team to win at Athletic Bilbao in the league this season.

  39. 20:58:
Italian Serie AGOAL- Juventus 3-0 Inter Milan - Arturo Vidal (55 mins)
    Arturo Vidal

We were about to put the Great Save graphic up when Samir Handanovic made a decent stop to deny Paul Pogba's shot from six yards, but then Arturo Vidal followed up for his 11th in the league this season, so the Goal graphic goes up instead.

This is getting embarrassing for Inter, who brought on forward Diego Milito moments earlier.

  40. 20:54:
Italian Serie ACLOSE-ish- Juventus 2-0 Inter Milan

  42. 20:49:
Italian Serie AGOAL- Juventus 2-0 Inter Milan - Giorgio Chiellini (47 mins)
    Giorgio Chiellini

Sometimes football is unfair - and in Serie A all the other teams are being treated unfairly by league leaders Juve, who are simply too good. On this occasion, centre-back Giorgio Chiellini, who made a few forays forward in the first half, slams in from six yards after the ball is played over the top.

We are back under way in Turin.

  44. 20:48:
Spanish La LigaHALF-TIME- Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Real Madrid

Athletic Bilbao have had the best chances of the half with Aritz Aduriz blasting wide and Iker Muniain mis controlling with just the goalkeeper to beat.

No one should be too surprised though, Bilbao are yet to be beaten in the league at home this season and already have Barcelona's scalp to their name.

La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid will be more than happy with this score.

  45. 20:46:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 0-0 Real Madrid

Just as I say that, Cristiano Ronaldo has a half chance but his volley sails wildly over the bar. It was a difficult chance with the ball dropping from high up but Ronaldo can bury those.

  52. 20:29:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 0-0 Real Madrid

Real Madrid are struggling to break down their hosts at the moment. Their intricate passing game is breaking down all too easily, while Bilbao's more direct style is proving effective.

Cripes! Two chances at either end. First, Inter's Rodrigo Palacio somehow fails to hit the target from eight yards following a counter and at the other end Ghana midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah is thwarted by another good save from Samir Handanovic.

Real Madrid are on the defensive here as this time Iker Muniain spurns a golden opportunity to give the home side the lead. A good first touch would see him clear on goal but, just when it matters, his composure lets him down and the ball runs away.

Spanish La LigaCLOSE!- Athletic Bilbao 0-0 Real Madrid

We have just passed the 800-minute mark since Real Madrid last conceded a goal - against Valencia in mid December.

But that run should be ended as Bilbao top scorer Aritz Aduriz runs clear on goal but shoots wide of goal. What a chance for the hosts.

  59. 20:16:
Italian Serie ACLOSE!- Juventus 1-0 Inter Milan

That was nearly an own goal from Inter's Zdravko Kuzmanovic. The Serb midfielder, in an attempt to clear a corner from the left, almost heads into his own net. He didn't. As you were.

  60. 20:14:
Spanish La LigaAthletic Bilbao 0-0 Real Madrid

Athletic Bilbao have given as good as they've got in the opening 10 minutes.

One player who will not be featuring for Inter is midfielder Fredy Guarin.

The Colombian has been dropped from coach Walter Mazzarri's 22-man squad for the second successive week following a January transfer month that almost saw him leave for Juve in a swap deal with striker Mirko Vucinic.

Inter's new owner Erick Thohir then pulled the plug on the deal after fans staged protests over the sale of one of their favourite players to their rivals.

Guarin reacted to the saga by tweeting: "Inter it is you that put me on the market without me ever asking ANYONE to leave because at Inter I was calm and happy.

"Now I am asking you for clarity and respect for me, the fans and my agent."
