As it happened

  1. 2200:

West Ham now just have their Premier League survival to concentrate on. Manchester City are still multi-tasking like the a female plate-spinner.

Manchester United attempt to claw back a 2-1 aggregate deficit against Sunderland tomorrow night. Their reward if they do so will be a meeting with City in the final. That could be something of a booby prize given Manuel Pellegrini's side's form.

See you same time, same place for all the latest.

    Bye for now.

Jamie Hardesty: Had Big Sam not played Diame it would've been disrespectful to fans. Now its another key injury. Catch 22 situation. No hope.

  3. 2156:
MANAGER REACTION- West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)
    Sam Allardyce

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce: "The most disappointing thing was our defensive unit doing what it did in the first few minutes. Manchester City are a super, super team but it was not a super, super opening goal.

"It was bog-standard defending, which was disappointing. You cannot do mistakes at this level to the amount we did them.

"The killer of all was the injuries to Joe Cole, who should not be out for so long, and Mo Diame, which looked really serious."

  4. 2152:
MANAGER REACTION- West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)
    Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City Manuel Pellegrini speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a very professional performance. It was easy to think the game was finished from the 6-0 in the first leg, but it was important to reach the final winning all the games.

"For Sergio Aguero, it was useful match as he played 60 minutes. For him, it useful for the future.

"Alvaro Negredo has a problem with his shoulder. He just has a pain at the moment, and we will see hope it is tomorrow.

"I see Marcos Lopes working everyday. He has a great future.

"Wembley is always important. It was important the way we reached the final, winning every game."

  5. 2151:
West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)

"It is the same for me," says Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini when asked whether he would prefer to face Manchester United or Sunderland in the final. That has to sting a bit back at Old Trafford.

  6. 2149:
    FULL-TIME- Peterborough 4-3 Notts County

BBC Sport's Chris Osborne at London Road: "After being 2-0 down seven minutes in, Peterborough United have come out 4-3 winners against 10-man Notts County. Hat-trick hero Nicky Ajose got the winner - he hadn't scored for Posh in his two-and-a-half years at the club until Saturday. Now he has four in two."

  7. 2148:
    Lopes, Lescott, Boyata

Marcos Lopes: "It was very good for me, I was very pleased to play this game.

"It is easy to play with these players, as they have so much quality.

Joleon Lescott: "A Wembley final is very special. When you get to a final, there are no easy games.

"[When asked whether he will be at Manchester City for the final] I am not sure. You never know, it is still ongoing."

Gary Barnes: Lopes outshine Morrison. Looks a good player.

Marcos Lopes has been chatting to the television cameras. Known as "Rony" because he reminds the City staff of a certain Cristiano, he comes across as a grounded, humble lad.

  10. 2143:
West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)

Where does that Manchester City win stands in the all-time list of aggregate whuppings? Not as high as you might think...

While it is the biggest winning margin ever in a League Cup semi-final, Aldershot gave Newport a 12-0 shoeing in the 1945-46 FA Cup final in English football's biggest ever aggregate win.

Liverpool beating Exeter 11-0 in the League Cup second round in 1981 is next on the list.

  11. 2136:
    FULL-TIME- Oxford 0-3 Charlton

It will be Huddersfield v Charlton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

  12. 2134:

Jack Collison is brought on as Mohamed Diame is carried off on a stretcher. More bad news for West Ham.

  16. 2131:
West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)

The attendance is in at Upton Park. A paltry 14,390 have been tempted along for this.

There is currently a break in play while Mohamed Diame is treated for a serious-looking injury.

  17. 2129:

The Stadio Olimpico erupts as Gervinho finishes off an incisive break by lashing in from close-range to give Roma a 1-0 lead against Juventus with 10 minutes remaining in their Coppa Italia quarter-final meeting.

The Ivory Coast international was derided while with Arsenal, but that strike was his sixth in 19 games since his summer move to Serie A.

Real Madrid still lead Espanyol 1-0 in their Copa del Rey tie with Karim Benzema's goal the difference.

  18. 2128:
West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)

Alvaro Negredo goes down heavily as he chases a ball through towards the byeline. The Spaniard receivs treatment from the Manchester City medical staff and is eventually back on his feet to baying chants of "Beast" from the visiting fans.

Sharif in Manchester: Beautiful scoreline from a Manchester City perspective. I just hope we can keep a clean sheet.

  20. 2124:
TEN MINUTES TO GO- West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)

Carlton Cole spins and slams a shot into the thigh of Gael Clichy as Manchester fail to deal convincingly with Stewart Downing's cross from the left.

It would have been interesting had Sam Allardyce left Andy Carroll on alongside Cole, with Downing and Matt Taylor supplying the crosses and Ravel Morrison and Kevin Nolan chasinig the leftovers.

MOTD presenter Gary LinekerWest Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)

"Think this may just be beyond the Hammers now."

  22. 2120:
West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)

Fifteen minutes to go and Jesus Navas should be making it "10 (ten)" on the videprinter. The Spaniard drives up, up and over after a neat reverse pass from Alvaro Negredo opened up an understaffed and back-pedalling City rearguard.

Manchester City's fans are revelling in their trip to the capital. "We want ten," they chant before Fernandinho disappoints them with a shot well over from 25 yards.

"It could be worse, you could have Moyes" was reportedly a ditty from earlier in the half.

  25. 2112:
West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9)
    Ravel Morrison

Ravel Morrison has looked a far more menacing presence playing through the middle in the second half. His ability to go either way past a defender opens up a lot of routes into the box from a central area.

Manchester City ring the changes. Long-time injury absentees Jack Rodwell and Stevan Jovetic are on in place of Javi Garcia and Sergio Aguero.

  28. 2102:
GOAL- Oxford 0-3 Charlton - Yann Kermorgant (58 mins)

That looks done and dusted at the Kassam. Yann Kermorgant rifles in a 30-yard free-kick to make the game safe, book in for a fourth-round tie with Huddersfield and make it five in seven games for himself.

  29. 2101:
GOAL- West Ham 0-3 Man City (agg 0-9) - Alvaro Negredo (59 mins)

It was like the West Ham defence were running the bulls in Pamplona. Alvaro Negredo surges through a gap between Roger Johnson and Matt Taylor and shrugs off both and gets the final touch to send the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Double figures is just a goal away.

  30. 2101:
West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8)

Stewart Downing's deep cross drops for Mohamad Diame at the far post, but the former Wigan man's attempt to control and cut inside are foiled by the large presence of Carlton Cole. His own team-mate.

  31. 2058:
West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8)

Matija Nastasic is being given the runaround by Carlton Cole. That is not a good look for any defender. The Serbian gives away a free-kick on the edge of the box for a foul on Cole and is relieved to see Ravel Morrison slap the set-piece straight into the wall.

  32. 2055:
West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8)

Carlton Cole stands up Matija Nastasic with a neat shift of feet out on the left wing, but Costel Pantilimon is equal to his shot from a tight angle.

  33. 2053:
West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8)
    Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll did pretty well on his first start of the season. There was no sign of his physicality being drained by his long injury absence and he caused the City defence a few nervous moments in the air.

  34. 2051:
SUBSTITUTION- West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8)

Cooper Sainsbury: This match strangely reminds me of the Spain v Tahiti match in the Confederations Cup last year!

Aderemi Isma'el: This game is already done and dusted. West Ham just have to try to keep their pride.

Baidu Sheikh: Can Manchester City declare?

  39. 2046:

Nothing separates Roma and Juventus as their Coppa Italia quarter-final reaches the break at the Stadio Olimpico. But something has to give - because this tie will be decided tonight. No second leg and no replay, so it could go to extra-time and (gulp) penalties.

Across the Mediterranean Sea, things are going smoothly for in-form Real Madrid. Los Blancos, who have not lost in 18 games, are leading through Karim Benzema's header at Espanyol in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final.

  40. 2042:
    Peterborough 1-2 Notts County

BBC Sport's Chris Osborne at London Road: "Three goals, two in the first 10 minutes, and a sending off - it's almost enough to defrost the icicles from the end of your nose. Almost.

"Peterborough looked like they had struck an iceberg when Enoch Showunmi and Ronan Murray struck early on. But Murray's subsequent red card for throwing a punch at Danny Swanson and Nicky Ajose's strike have thrown them a lifeline."

  41. 2042:

Crewe are struggling near the bottom of League One, but in Chuks Aneke they have a player in great form. The Arsenal loanee scored his fifth goal in nine games with a delightfully-struck free-kick to give the Railwaymen a 1-0 half-time lead against MK Dons.

BBC Sport's Chris Osborne is filing updates from the night's other League One fixture, where an action-packed first half sees 10-man Notts County beating Peterborough 2-1.

In League Two, Chesterfield are leading 1-0 against Rochdale in the only game of the night thanks to Gary Roberts's goal.

Costel Pantilimon has just felt the full force of Andy Carroll's determination to get on the end of a cross. But the Romanian goalkeeper is back on his feet after their aerial challenge and hacks the free-kick upfield in the final action in the first half.

  47. 2031:
West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8)

City youngster Marcos Lopes has shown up well in the first half, offering himself for the ball and running at the defence with determination and invention. Jussi Jaaskelainen has to sprint off his line to get to a throughball as the Portuguese puts on the afterburners and almost gets there first.

  48. 2025:
GOAL- Oxford 0-2 Charlton - Danny Green (38 mins)

Charlton were two down at the Valley in the first staging of this tie and fought back to force a replay. Oxford will have to do something similar now. The visitors have a two-goal lead as Simon Church nods across goal and Danny Green pops up to stab home at close range.

  49. 2021:
GOAL- Oxford 0-1 Charlton - Yann Kermorgant (35 mins)

  51. 2020:

While Manchester City cruise towards a comfortable away win, there has not been an early breakthrough for Spanish giants Real Madrid in their Copa del Rey tie at Espanyol. It is still goalless between the teams in their quarter-final clash in Barcelona.

Things are getting quite feisty over in Italy where Serie A's top two - Roma and Juventus - are battling it out in the Coppa Italia last eight. No goals are scribbled in the referee's notepad yet, but plenty of names have been jotted down after a flurry of yellow cards.

  52. 2019:
YELLOW CARD- West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8)

Sergio Aguero jumps into a tackle with James Tomkins like a wellied-up kid leaping into a puddle. It is a spiteful little two-footer, but, all apologetic smiles, he gets away with just a yellow.

  55. 2013:
FA CUP UPDATE- Oxford 0-0 Charlton

Charlton and Oxford played out a 2-2 draw in their opening FA Cup third-round meeting, and there is little to separate the teams in the replay.

After nearly half an hour, Championship strugglers Charlton are controlling the bal but are yet to create any real opportunities against their League Two opponents.

  56. 2009:
GOAL- West Ham 0-2 Man City (agg 0-8) - Sergio Aguero (24 mins)

This is painful viewing for West Ham fans. Neither Roger Johnson or James Tomkins, the Hammers two centre-halves, can get a solid tackle in on Marcos Lopes as he weaves towards goal. As the youngster runs out of steam, Sergio Aguero is on hand to take the ball on, leave another defender floundering and slip a finish beneath Jussi Jaskelainen.

  57. 2008:
    West Ham 0-1 Man City

Ravel Morrison is dropping deep to pick the ball up off his defenders, but there is not a lot of movement around the rest of the midfield. He resorts to looking long for a charging run from Mohamed Diame, but his pass is over-hit.

The same happens shortly after as he attempts to play in Kevin Nolan. He needs a little more patience.

Matt Taylor has been an early bright spot for West Ham, finding space down the right and peppering the penalty area with some decent crosses. Andy Carroll is still yet to meet any though.

  63. 1955:
    West Ham 0-1 Man City

Roger Johnson up against Sergio Aguero is the sort of contest that the League Against Cruel Sports should look into. Aguero skips past Johnson with ease, leaving the on-loan defender choking on fumes before slashing a shot wide of the top corner.

  64. 1953:
DISALLOWED GOAL- West Ham 0-1 Man City

Kevin Nolan has the ball in the net with a well-controlled side-foot volley from Matt Taylor's cross, but the offside flag is up to cut short his celebrations. Good call, he was half a yard the wrong side.

    Alvaro Negredo scores

Jeers around Upton Park. And the home fans have a point. There is no pressure on Marcos Lopes out on the left wing and the youngster's cross to the far post is met by Alvaro Negredo who puts away a regulation downward header without a hint of a marker stopping him.

James Tomkins all at sea, looking like a man watching trains thundering past him from the platform.

  71. 1941:
    Stevan Jovetic

Stevan Jovetic has been Manchester City's Keyser Soze this season, with his mercurial talents matched only by his mysterious absences.

Hamstring, thigh and calf problems have restricted him to just five appearances for City since his £22m move from Fiorentina, but he did score twice in September's 5-0 win over Wigan.

City's forward line is already bursting with quality. If he gets back to form and fitness, well, the mind boggles.

Reuben Palmer: You are about to witness the greatest comeback in footballing history.

  73. 1941:

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce on Sky Sports: "We have got a few tired players who have played every week since Christmas because of our injury situation. But now we have got some light at end of the tunnel. It is important to get Kevin [Nolan]and James [Tomkins] back on field from a defensive point of view. And we will see if we can get 45 minutes - or 60 if we're lucky - out of Andy Carroll.

On mission impossible: "We are aiming to get something out of the game against a hugely strong side who are in very good form."

  74. 1940:

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini on Sky Sports: "We have taken a very big step [towards the final] but first we must play here. It is important not to play within the other result, we have got to try and play a good game today. It is important for the players to continue their winning mentality."

  75. 1940:

Forty-two pounds to watch your side in a match that may have less bite than a pre-season friendly? it doesn't sound like the most attractive proposition does it?

By the looks of it, West Ham fans agree. Upton Park is only just getting towards half-full.

Kids can come for just a pound, so there may be a high-pitched tone to what ever atmosphere there is tonight.

  76. 1936:
    Marcos Lopes

Marcos Lopes signed for City from Benfica in 2011 and the 18-year-old is one of the club's brightest hopes of a "home-grown" youngster making the first team.

The Portuguese youth international made his first start in the 5-0 win over Wigan earlier in the competition and gets another chance to press his claims tonight.

Ravel Morrison will be the subject of a fair bit of interest tonight.

Fulham have made an unsuccessful bid for the 20-year-old earlier this month, and Cottagers manager Rene Meulensteen has hinted that he may try again, claiming that Morrison is up for the switch.

Morrison responded by saying he was frustrated with the reports and trying to "keep my focus on the next game".

Which sounds a little wishy-washy to me.

  79. 1925:
TEAM NEWS- West Ham v Man City (1945 GMT)

West Ham also welcome a big name back into their starting XI after a long spell on the treatment table. England striker Andy Carroll makes his first start since May following a foot injury, while skipper Kevin Nolan is restored to the Hammers line up after serving a four-match suspension. Sam Allardyce makes seven changes in total as the Hammers look to achieve the impossible.

West Ham: Jaaskelainen, Taylor, Tomkins, Johnson, Rat, Diame, Diarra, Morrison, Nolan, Joe Cole, Carroll. Subs: Jarvis, Collison, Adrian, Noble, Downing, Carlton Cole, Chambers.

Argentine striker Sergio Aguero makes his first Manchester City start since 14 December following a calf injury. The eyes of Blues fans will also be drawn to the bench, where they will see the name of Stevan Jovetic. The £22m summer signing has not been spotted in a City shirt since the last-16 stage of this competition in October because of a hamstring injury. Portuguese teenager Marco Lopes makes only his second start.

Man City: Pantilimon, Boyata, Lescott, Nastasic, Clichy, Jesus Navas, Javi Garcia, Fernandinho, Lopes, Negredo, Aguero. Subs: Hart, Zabaleta, Dzeko, Kolarov, Rodwell, Demichelis, Jovetic.

  80. 1922:

Sam Allardyce taking out his aggression, wrapping his molars round an unfortunate piece of gum?

Andy Carroll cantering headlong into the advertising hoardings in a whole-hearted attempt to charge down a clearance?

What are you looking out of in tonight's meeting?

And if you have suffered a footballing thrashing of your own in the past, let us all share the trauma. If it is a non-football thrashing, you can keep it to yourself...

  81. 1922:
    Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale starts for Real Madrid tonight. As does Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo in an attack some are starting to dub Real's 'BBC'.

I should stress the BBC does not endorse any particular strikeforce and other expensively-assembled forward lines are available.

  82. 1917:

Cup fever is hardly engulfing England tonight, but it is a different story over in mainland Europe. Two big knockout ties are taking place on the continent where Roma host Juventus in Italy and Spanish giants Real Madrid visit Espanyol.

Roma, after their record-breaking Serie A start, have fallen adrift of runaway leaders Juventus in the race for the Scudetto. But Giallorossi talisman Francesco Totti and his band of merry men have an opportunity to get one over on the Old Lady in tonight's Coppa Italia quarter-final. No two-legged action there - Roma plan to use home advantage at the Stadio Olimpico to advance to the last four.

Across the Mediterranean Sea, in-form Real go to Barcelona for the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final against Espanyol. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale et al have not been beaten in their past 18 games - including a narrow 1-0 success against tonight's opponents just nine days ago.

  83. 1917:
Peterborough v Notts County (1945 GMT)
    London Road

BBC Sport's Chris Osborne at London Road: There was a pitch inspection at London Road at 12.30. It passed fine. But it puts the stodge into stodgy."

  84. 1910:

Elsewhere Oxford and Charlton will try for a third time to get their FA Cup third round done and dusted for a third and final time.

The first attempt was postponed, the second saw Oxford fight back from two goals adrift to force a replay and tonight someone will hopeful be able to fill Huddersfield away into their diaries for the fourth round.

In League One, Crewe could climb out of relegation zone with a win over MK Dons while sixth place Peterborough will hope to move on up with a win over Notts County.

In League Two, Rochdale will leapfrog Scunthorpe at the top if they beat Chesterfield.

  85. 1903:

David from Great Missenden: I remember going to Oldham with West Ham and getting beat 6-0 in the League Cup semi many years ago. The second leg we were 3-0 up with 20 minutes to go and Julian Dicks hit the bar. If that had gone in we would of got six!! Live the dream, Manchester City are no Oldham. Come on your Irons! Have plenty of blind faith!!!!!

  86. 1903:

Far more likely we will be leafing back through the record books to find where a West Ham defeat ranks in League Cup history.

History holds both good and bad omens for the home side.

West Ham currently hold the record for the most goals scored in a League Cup semi-final, when Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore at al racked up a 10-3 aggregate win over Cardiff in 1966. That record could go tonight.

On the other hand, when West Ham lost the first leg of their League Cup semi-final against Oldham 6-0 in 1990, they recovered to restore some respectability with a 3-0 win in the second leg.

  87. 1858:
Liverpool win European Cup in 2005

Is it too soon to read the rites over West Ham's Capital One Cup campaign?

Liverpool turned around a three-goal deficit against an apparently vastly superior AC Milan side in the 2005 European Cup final in half the time the Hammers have got.

Like West Ham, Europe were six adrift as they headed into the final day of the 2012 Ryder Cup. But they recovered to snatching an extraordinary victory.

A Ben Ainslie-inspired United States came back from 8-1 down to beat Team New Zealand and retain the America's Cup back in September.

But West Ham making it through to the final on 2 March may just top all of those...

  88. 1852:
Adrian in goal for West Ham

But don't head off just yet because there are plenty of questions to be answered at Upton Park tonight.

Will West Ham show the stomach for a relegation fight by lifting themselves above the scrapingly low standard they set in the first leg?

Do Manchester City have the strength in depth to sustain their four-pronged assault on all trophies?

Will anyone even recognise the lesser-spotted Stevan Jovetic if he comes off the bench for City?

The answers start coming in in a little under an hour.

  89. 1852:

Andy Carroll makes his first start since the final game of the 2012-13 campaign. Ravel Morrison starts in midfield.

West Ham starting XI: Jaaskelainen, Nolan, Tomkins, Rat, Carroll, Taylor, Morrison, Diarra, Diame, J.Cole, Johnson

  90. 1850:

Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo start up front for Manuel Pellegrini's side. Jesus Navas, Javi Garcia and Fernandinho start in midfield. A total of eight changes from the side that beat Cardiff at the weekend.

City starting XI: Pantilimon, Clichy, Nastasic, Lescott, Boyata, Lopes, Fernandindo, Garcia, Navas, Negredo, Aguero

  91. 1845:

    This is a dead rubber.

It's passed on. It's no more. It's ceased to be. It's kicked the bucket. It's shuffled off this mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible.

West Ham v Manchester City may have another 90 minutes to run, but with City 6-0 up on aggregate, it is an ex-League Cup semi-final.
