As it happened

  1. 2233:

That's a wrap then, we'll have more reaction and hopefully some injury updates on the likes of Wayne Rooney and Andros Townsend on the BBC Sport pages through the night.

    See you on the weekend!

    Text us on 81111

Cameron in Oxford: People saying it's a formality that it'll be an all Manchester final, even after Sunderland and West Ham have both just beaten Chelsea and Tottenham respectively. Cupsets still possible...

  3. 2223:

Highlights of all four Capital One Cup quarter-finals are on their way for you on the League Cup Show, which is on at 2310 GMT on BBC One and online.

Steven Jerjian: Over two legs, have to fancy Manchester teams to pull through. Stranger things have happened already this season though..

Dilan: That's two consecutive wins, clean sheets, and performances for us. A sign of a run of form beginning? I hope so.

  5. 2216:
MANAGER REACTION- Stoke 0-2 Man Utd

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "I thought we made a fair fist of it in the first half against all the elements and thought we were in decent shape. Our organisation was good, United weren't creating too many chances.

"But United, on the night, deserved to win, they just had a little bit more power and pace. We weren't able to ask enough questions of them in the second half."

  6. 2215:
MANAGER REACTION- Tottenham 1-2 West Ham
    Tim Sherwood

Tottenham caretaker manager Tim Sherwood on his future: "I don't know if I'll be Spurs manager - I haven't spoken to the chairman. We have to have a chat and see. It has to fit me and the club. The club have to make the right appointment - as you can imagine the list is as long as your arm.

"It is new for me. I have enjoyed it.

"It is a new voice for the players. I am trying to get the best out of them, it is difficult o get the message across of how I want to play in a few days.

"On Monday I was going to take the development team training at 10:20, I then had to change my plans to take the first team.

"There are a lot of big names in the frame. It depends who the chairman thinks is the right one."

  7. 2212:
MANAGER REACTION- Tottenham 1-2 West Ham
    Emmanuel Adebayor

Tottenham caretaker manager Tim Sherwood: "We started the game really well. We created chances in the first 20 minutes, but couldn't make the breakthrough. Later we gave it away and encouraged West Ham - they got the breaks in the end.

"Give them credit - they bombarded us and stuck to their task. It's a shame Adebayor had to come off the field but you cant slog the boys. They were enforced changes, but hopefully they'll be fine for the weekend."

  8. 2211:
MANAGER REACTION- Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce: "As the game wore on both teams had to go for it. Neither of us wanted it to go into extra-time.

"It is what you can do when the spaces get bigger and bigger. We improved after Emmanuel Adebayor's goal.

"We saw the shaken nerve ends of Tottenham when we scored. We then went for the jugular. Our substitutes, who came on with fresh legs, exploited the spaces."

  9. 2207:
    Sheffield Weds

If you're just tuning in for the semi-final draw, you may have missed the news that our two other games tonight both fell foul of the weather.

The FA Cup replay between Crawley Town and Bristol Rovers was called off with 15 minutes to go, while Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan saw their Championship game off after an hour. Both had waterlogged pitches.

    Text us on 81111

Matt in Telford: Good draw for Man United. Presuming the final is the expected derby, it may allow them to get into Europe next season.

Logan from Basingstoke: Tottenham could have done with doing well in the League Cup this year, it seems to me that it might have been their only way of making it into Europe next season.

  11. 2202:

West Ham and Sunderland will have plenty to say about that. Do not write them off.

DreamChaserAhmz': Well, I guess it's a Manchester derby for the cup final then, exciting!

  13. 2201:
Former England defender Danny Mills at Britannia Stadium

"We expected a Manchester derby for the semi-finals. It is the dream for the two Manchester sides to make it to the final, that would be the most prestigious game."

  14. 2201:
MANAGER REACTION- Stoke 0-2 Man Utd

Manchester United manager David Moyes: "I'm glad we're through. It will be a tough semi-final against Sunderland. Sunderland played well to beat Chelsea so anything can happen but we are really pleased to be in the last four.

"The conditions were a leveller and it was really difficult to play in tonight. It's some of the worst conditions I've played or managed in. But once we got the first goal we felt confident.

"This club is used to winning trophies, it is business as usual."

  15. 2158:

    Sunderland v Manchester United

    Manchester City v West Ham

First legs to be played week commencing 6 January, second leg week commencing 20 January.

Tomer Tsur: I guess it's time to recycle the classics: "Give Sherwood time", "The players need time to gel". I give up

Hugh Moxon: Blame the manager all you want but I've never seen a group of players so uninterested in playing football as Spurs

Tommy Good: How can you have 21 shots and only get 4 on target? Embarrassing from Spurs

  22. 2146:
Former England defender Danny Mills at Britannia StadiumFULL-TIME- Stoke 0-2 Man Utd

"Manchester United were not much better than Stoke on the night, but two moments of quality decided it. David Moyes will be absolutely delighted to make it to the semi-finals."

  23. 2145:

The draw for the Capital One Cup semi-finals is coming up then. Here's a reminder of the last four:

    FULL-TIME- Stoke 0-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United are through.

  26. 2142:
    Stoke 0-2 Man Utd

Stoke are providing plenty of huff and puff but they know the game is gone. Most of the home crowd are filing out.

  27. 2142:
Former Tottenham manager David Pleat at White Hart LaneTottenham 1-2 West Ham

"Tim Sherwood tried to play with a more open formation. He was brave going with two strikers.

"They could not crack West Ham, and I thought they needed to change at half time. You have to give credit to the West Ham defenders and their narrow midfield.

"Overall, Tottenham showed a good work-rate but they needed a bit more. It is a big blow to Tottenham, Tim Sherwood is big enough to cope with the defeat."

  28. 2140:
    Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

I wouldn't say that one game can rule out Tim Sherwood's chances of being the full-time boss at Spurs, but I doubt that another home defeat can have done him any good.

  29. 2140:
Former Tottenham manager David Pleat at White Hart LaneTottenham 1-2 West Ham

"It is a massive boost for West Ham, who had a game plan to sit deep. They defended very well in the first half.

"After Emmanuel Adebayor's well-deserved goal, West Ham changed their mentality and pushed forward with nothing to lose. Their long balls caused Tottenham problems.

"It was a strange games in many ways."

Spurs have a free-kick and load the box up, but West Ham clear and counter-attack at pace, Ravel Morrison finds Modibo Maiga, who clatters the crossbar with a 20-yard scorcher!

Matt in Manchester: Just done the semi-final draw three times with bits of paper and it was the same every time. City v Spurs - Utd v Sunderland.

  35. 2135:
    SUBSTITUTION- Stoke 0-2 Man Utd

Darren Fletcher has come on to replace Danny Welbeck as he continues his comeback from illness. Should be an easy few minutes for him.

  36. 2133:
GREAT SAVE!- Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

    Adriaaaannnnn! You did it!

Great save from the Hammer, getting down low to claw out Gylfi Sigurdsson's shot from 10 yards. Spurs keep coming...

  37. 2132:
INJURY TIME- Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

FIVE minutes added on at White Hart Lane.

  38. 2131:
    Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

Tim Sherwood looks utterly dejected now, he's been undone by Big Sam here in the last 10 minutes.

  39. 2131:
Former England defender Danny Mills at Britannia StadiumStoke 0-2 Man Utd

"What a great finish from Patrice Evra. He did not try to belt the life out of it, he just placed it."

  40. 2129:
GOAL- Stoke 0-2 Man Utd - Patrice Evra (78 mins)

That will do for David Moyes, that will do it. Ashley Young gets an assist to go with his goal as he plays in Patrice Evra, who holds off a challenge before curling home right-footed. Fine finish on his wrong side.

  41. 2129:
    Stoke 0-1 Man Utd

There have been a lot of injuries this midweek and here's another one, Ryan Shawcross pulls up with a groin injury. Bad news for the Stoke captain.

  42. 2128:
    Tottenham 1-2 West Ham

Just five minutes left for Spurs to react, and they can't get Emmanuel Adebayor back on...

  43. 2126:
GOAL- Tottenham 1-2 West Ham - Modibo Maiga (85 mins)

Big header, big goal! Twelve months and 17 days since his last goal, Modibo Maiga rises like a salmon to meet Mohamed Diame's cross and thump a low header into the net. What a comeback.

  44. 2125:
    Tottenham 1-1 West Ham

Chance now for Spurs as Jermain Defoe plays in Nacer Chadli but Joey O'Brien makes a fine recovery tackle to smother it at source. Tim Sherwood is out of his seat now, alongside Big Sam on the touchline.

  45. 2124:
MATCH ABANDONED- Crawley 0-0 Bristol Rovers

Game abandoned now in Crawley. No surprises.

  46. 2123:
    CLOSE!- Stoke 0-1 Man Utd
    Man Utd boss David Moyes

Chance for Stoke now as Jon Walters evades his marker to meet a cross but he can't quite find the touch - United's defence was nowhere there.

    Stoke 0-1 Man Utd

Statisticians Opta: 36 - Ashley Young's goal v Stoke ends a run of 36 games for Manchester United without one. Patience.

  48. 2121:
GOAL- Tottenham 1-1 West Ham - Matt Jarvis (80 mins)

It has been coming! Route one stuff as Adrian lumps it long, it's flicked on to Matt Taylor and he tees up Matt Jarvis for a wonderful finish, slammed high into the roof of the net! Maybe we are having extra-time after all...

  49. 2119:
    SUBSTITUTION- Tottenham 1-0 West Ham

Emmanuel Adebayor comes off to a decent reception as Lewis Holtby replaces him for the climax. West Ham send on Ravel Morrison, who scored a belter at the Lane in October.

Moments later Matty Taylor hammers a shot which Hugo Lloris has to push clear.

  55. 2115:
Former England defender Danny Mills at Britannia StadiumStoke 0-1 Man Utd

"Ashley Young absolutely leathered it. Thomas Sorensen did not have any reaction time it was hit so hard, but he might be disappointed with that.

"Young's knee-slide went on for so long, he did well to get up in time to celebrate with the Manchester United fans."

  56. 2113:
GOAL- Stoke 0-1 Man Utd - Ashley Young (62 mins)

Bang! Another big goal as the previously underwhelming Ashley Young hammers Manchester United into the lead! He starts the move, plays it into the feet of Javier Hernandez before taking the ball off his toes to thrash in a 20-yarder, brilliant finish! He is booked for celebrating but he won't care one jot.

  57. 2112:
GREAT SAVE!- Tottenham 1-0 West Ham

  60. 2110:
    SUBSTITUTION- Stoke 0-0 Man Utd

A positive change for United too as Javier Hernandez replaces Anderson.

    GET INVOLVED- #bbcfootball

Greg Matthews: The problem for United is when you've got Anderson, Cleverley, Young and Welbeck playing together, you're never going to score.

  62. 2108:
GOAL- Tottenham 1-0 West Ham - Emmanuel Adebayor (67 mins)

What a goal! Pick that one out! Andros Townsend frees Jermain Defoe down the left, his cross is perfect and Emmanuel Adebayor arrives on it like a train, smashing in a volley off the underside of the crossbar!

Booooommm! Some fine pointing going on from Ade as well. He's proven a point there.

  63. 2107:
    SUBSTITUTION- Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

Carlton Cole comes off after 65 minutes to be replaced by Modibo Maiga. Is he the man to sort this one out?

  65. 2104:
David Pleat, Former Tottenham manager on BBC Radio 5 live:Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

Change for Spurs as Danny Rose is replaced by former Manchester United man Zeki Fryers. Will that break the deadlock?

  68. 2102:
    Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

Great strength from Carlton Cole as he barges past two defenders on a counter-attack before finding his way into the penalty area, he then loses his balance and his cross is tame. Could he have gone down there though? He maybe should have.

Amazing! James Collins goes to give the ball back to Spurs after the stoppage, but he gets hold of his clearance a bit too much and nearly chips Hugo Lloris from the halfway line! Lloris has to sprint back to make a fine save and keep it out.

    That would have been controversial...

  76. 2053:
    CLOSE!- Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

What a scramble! Kyle Walker bursts clear on the right, his shot hits team-mate Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon scoops it back across and Gylfi Sigurdsson can't then force it in. George McCartney then brings the play to a halt as he is winded.

  77. 2051:

Tottenham had 72% possession in that first-half, which is more than any Premier League game this season. Just the one shot on target though.

  87. 2039:

Wilson Palacios has winced gingerly back on to the pitch, that is going to hurt him for a long time though. Geoff Cameron then puts in a great cross to fashion Stoke's best opening of the night, but Jon Walters can't steer the header on target and it flashes wide.

Tom Cleverley survives a strong handball shout as he charges down a clearance in the Stoke penalty area but he rather panics and puts a poor ball across the box when he had Danny Welbeck open for the square ball.

  116. 2007:
    Stoke 0-0 Man Utd

Anderson weaves inside and gets a shot away for Manchester United but it's easy for Thomas Sorensen to gather. It's a scrappy old affair.

Max Wattz: Sir Alex Ferguson worked hard to make Danny Welbeck a great player, and passed that down to Moyes. But I don't think Welbeck works hard enough.

  118. 2004:
    Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

West Ham are under siege, they are really struggling to even reach halfway. Aaron Lennon has already put over about six or seven crosses, you feel it is a matter of time before Jermain Defoe turns one in.

  119. 2003:

The howling wind and rain are causing problems at Checkatrade.com Stadium, where it is still scoreless in the FA Cup second-round replay between Crawley and Bristol Rovers. A thus-far scrappy match has seen Rovers goalkeeper Steven Mildenhall the busier.

  120. 2000:
    Stoke 0-0 Man Utd

The number of crisp packets on the pitch is in danger of outnumbering players at the Britannia as both sides battle with the elements. Manchester United are having more of the ball but they've not hurt the hosts yet.

  121. 1959:

It is still goalless at Hillsborough, but Wigan are the team on top. Both Nick Powell and Jordi Gomez have had chances to put the Latics in-front against managerless Sheffield Wednesday.

  122. 1958:
David Pleat, Former Tottenham manager on BBC 5 live sports extra:Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

"Adebayor has a little bit of life in him - this is a big chance for him, under this new management, to stake his claim."

  123. 1957:
Former England defender Danny Mills at Britannia StadiumStoke 0-0 Man Utd

"Both teams are lacking a bit of penetration at the moment. Manchester United are lacking their star names, will their midfield be creative enough to get Danny Welbeck behind the Stoke defence?"

  124. 1955:
    CLOSE!- Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

The big man is on it tonight alright! Lovely stuff from Andros Townsend to weave across the box from right to left, he stands up a cross and Emmanuel Adebayor soars through the air, hang-time a member of the mid-90s Chicago Bulls would be proud of, but his header arcs just wide.

A Spurs goal is on the way I reckon...

Darren Mason: Injuries for Utd and no Rooney. Spurs are managerless. West Ham and Stoke double tonight!!

Micheal Grundy: Should be an easy win for us. Stoke find it difficult to score.

  126. 1952:
    Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

Great feet from Emmanuel Adebayor to set up another attack for Spurs, Aaron Lennon whips it over and Joey O'Brien is only a yard away from a fine own goal, nodding the ball just past his near post. The tempo from Tottenham is markedly increased.

  127. 1951:
    Stoke 0-0 Man Utd

The last thing David Moyes wants is another injury and he looks concerned after captain Patrice Evra has a hard landing after challenging for a header. There's a fair bit of wincing and blowing out of cheeks but Evra is going to soldier on.

Luke Wilson: Tim Sherwood has got enough experience to realise Lennon should play on the right and Townsend on the left.

  129. 1950:

"That was a really good pass from Danny Welbeck, but Ashley Young just sliced across it. That was a warning for Stoke.

"It is a night for short passes, as anything in the air will swirl and move. There are also crisp packets blowing across the pitch."

  130. 1949:
    CLOSE!- Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

And another close one! Andros Townsend whistles a low shot wide from 25 yards. Tim Sherwood promised a fast, attacking start and he hasn't been disappointed.

  131. 1948:
    CLOSE!- Stoke 0-0 Man Utd

Let's hope these games stay like this as we have an early good chance for the visitors at the Britannia! Danny Welbeck works the ball into the path of Ashley Young on the right, he hits an early shot which half the ground think is in but actually swerved away into the side-netting. Not sure Thomas Sorensen had that covered though...

    GET INVOLVED- #bbcfootball

Thomas Rimer: Feel bad for AVB, but he had to go. Too stubborn to adapt, wrong tactics for Spurs, no improvements in sight.

  133. 1947:
    CLOSE!- Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

Emmanuel Adebayor gives the ball away with his first touch - and his second which leads to a West Ham counter attack. Spurs recover well though and Aaron Lennon carries it down the right. His low cross lands at Jermain Defoe's feet, and he shoots wide from close range!

The Tim Sherwood era is alive. Open, attacking stuff...

  134. 1945:

Here we go then, game on at White Hart Lane and the Britannia...

  135. 1944:

  136. 1943:
David Pleat, Former Tottenham manager on BBC 5 live sports extra:Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)

"It's seemingly quite an obvious first XI selection - they had to go with an attacking line-up. The important thing for Tim [Sherwood] is to get results early. It isn't easy to take over a team in mid-season. You have to get the respect of players quite quickly."

  137. 1942:

Here we go then - players are out on the pitch at both games. Kick-off coming up...

  138. 1941:
Stoke v Man Utd (1945 GMT)
    Mark Hughes

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes: "I have always taken the view that there are only so many competitions you can realistically win and this is one for us. That is why we are in the quarter-finals, because we have shown it the respect it deserves, but it will be difficult tonight."

BBC Radio 5 live pundit Danny Mills looks set for Arctic exploration or a jaunt out into the frozen wastes of Hoth rather than a commentating job on Stoke's match against Manchester United. It is wet, windy and freezing at Britannia Stadium.

  140. 1937:
Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)

A penny for Tim Sherwood's thoughts right about now? The newly-interim-caretaker Spurs boss is 10 minutes away from his managerial debut. He's picked the side, sorted out who's picking up who at corners, that sort of thing, now it's down to his chosen XI to perform.

  141. 1934:
Stoke v Man Utd (1945 GMT)

These two have already met in the Premier League this season, where goals from Peter Crouch and Marko Arnautovic had United in real trouble until Javier Hernandez grabbed a winner.

The Mexican is not involved tonight, we've not had it confirmed but he did miss the game at Aston Villa after taking a kick in training.

Maggie in Lowestoft: To be honest, I'm relieved that AVB has gone. I thought he was always a huge risk by Mr Levy. I thought Harry Redknapp was treated very poorly after what he did for the club.

Franco Baldini is lurking in the tunnel at White Hart Lane talking to a mysterious looking gentleman. It could be a candidate for the managerial role, it could just as easily be his son or an applicant for a catering gig. I have no idea.

The bad weather is not confined to the north west, it looks pretty rank at the Lane as well.

  146. 1921:
    Stoke v Man Utd

Did you ever go to the old Victoria Ground in Stoke by the way? A fine place. I remember being taken there once as a small child and it something like 50p to get in, with an extra 50p if you wanted a cushion. Great days.

The Britannia is a much more hospitable place of course, but when that wind gets up it can be very, very cold indeed. A tester for David Moyes's side for sure.

TWENTY-YEAR ITCH- Stoke v Man Utd (1945 GMT)
    Mark Stein

Stoke have not picked up a win against Manchester United since they returned to the top flight, but their last win against the Red Devils was at least in this competition.

Mark Stein - Potters hero - was the main man that night, scoring twice to cancel out Dion Dublin's strike at the old Victoria Ground. Unfortunately for Stoke though United won the second leg, with goals from Lee Sharpe and Brian McClair.

  151. 1908:

Even by the Britannia's standards, it looks pretty grim weather tonight! Poor Thomas Sorensen can hardly open his eyes due to the swirling wind and sheeting rain.

Adam Stewart: Nice to see Spurs playing 4-4-2. Apart from the centre backs and Soldado for Adebayor this should be the lineup every week.

Ian Marks: Is this the archetypal 'cold night in Stoke' situation regarding a lot of Man United's team?

Andy Kershaw: Wow, now that is a bold and attacking line-up from Spurs. Tim Sherwood is certainly going for it!

  153. 1902:
FIGHTING TALK- Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)

Tim Sherwood wants revenge for that West Ham win at the Lane and has promised to come out swinging tonight.

He told Spurs TV: "It's a huge game, especially on the back of what they did to us at the Lane. It was disappointing.

"We have to get out there on the front foot and we have to impose ourselves on them as soon as we can during the game."

It's a return to 4-4-2 for the Spurs tonight.

Ross in Kent: I'm a Spurs member and got a Christmas card from the club today signed by AVB!

Max: I definitely care about winning the League Cup. The sooner Moyes gets a major trophy under his belt, the easier things will get. He is a top manager who will come good for us and I hope for a good performance tonight against a tough team.

  155. 1858:
Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)
    Ravel Morrison

All-change in the Spurs dugout then, but in the opposite technical area Big Sam himself is starting to come under some heat - as West Ham just can't score any goals. Which is a bit of a flaw.

The Hammers have bagged just 12 goals in the Premier League all season but a run to the cup final could lift the gloom. And West Ham have happy memories of White Hart Lane, with Ravel Morrison guiding them to a 3-0 win in October.

More of the same tonight would go down a treat in the East End.

Don't ask Sam if AVB should have gone. He's too busy for that...

"I have enough of my own problems with injuries and suspensions with games coming up rapidly to have too much concern about Tottenham other than what team I am going to play, how we are going to play and what we can do to combat them and get through to the semi-finals," he said.

  156. 1853:
Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)

Emmanuel Adebayor does indeed start up front for Tottenham alongside Jermain Defoe as Tim Sherwood makes six changes.

    West Ham make seven changes.

Tottenham XI: Lloris; Walker, Chiriches, Capoue, Rose; Lennon, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Townsend; Adebayor, Defoe

West Ham XI: Adrian, O'Brien, Rat, Collins, McCartney, Diarra, Taylor, Collison, J.Cole, Jarvis, C.Cole

  157. 1851:
COMING IN FROM THE COLD?- Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)
    Andre Villas-Boas and Emmanuel Adebayor

The good news for Tottenham fans is that they may have a multi-million pound, £120,000-a-week striker back in the fold from tonight.

Emmanuel Adebayor, scorer of 17 Premier League goals for Spurs just two seasons ago, was frozen out under AVB but there is a lot of chat that he will be re-integrated now that the Portuguese is out the door.

A viable asset on his day? Definitely.

A lazy, static, uninterested waste of time on his other days? Possibly...

  158. 1849:
Stoke v Man Utd (1945 GMT)

Stoke make four changes from the side which drew 0-0 with Hull at the weekend, Jon Waltesr and Thomas Sorensen among those returning.

Chris Smalling, Ashley Young and Anderson return for Manchester United.

Stoke XI: Sorensen; Cameron, Shawcross, Wilson, Pieters; Walters, Palacios, Ireland, Whelan, Assaidi; Crouch

Man Utd XI: De Gea; Rafael, Smalling, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Cleverley, Jones, Anderson, Young; Welbeck.

James Sanders: Given the recent goalscoring form of West Ham and Spurs, I'm going for a 5-4 win tonight... On penalties after a 0-0 draw

Like a Villas-Boas: AVB was sacked for deterioration of relationship with Levy. Nothing to do with results. Same happened with Redknapp. Levy Out.

Matthew Cooper: Difficult to lose 6-0 and 5-0 in the space of a couple of weeks and keep your job.

  160. 1847:
Stoke v Man Utd (1945 GMT)

Aimee Lewis reports: "Stoke manager Mark Hughes has described a good cup run as having a "snowball" effect on a club's league form, which is a nice analogy to use in the build up to Christmas. But such hopes can quickly melt away in the unpredictable world of the League Cup, especially when the team blocking your path to the semi-finals are four-time winners Manchester United.

"Stoke have suffered four straight defeats against United, but the good news for Hughes and co is that the Potters have apparently never lost a home cup tie against the Red Devils."

  161. 1845:
Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)

Saj Chowdhury reports: "Tim Sherwood, for four years the combative force in Tottenham's midfield, faces, for now at least, a fight to raise the spirits of a side punching below their weight.

"But, it's not all festive gloom as he takes charge of a team in the League Cup quarters, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal and in the Europa League knockout stages - it could be worse, you could be West Ham. Lying one point above the bottom three, do the Hammers need the distraction of reaching the last four? There's no £60m cashpot for winning the cup and relegation."

    Text us on 81111

Andy in Manchester: I agree that managers are not given enough time. However anybody who has watched Spurs over the last season and a half will know that they had regressed significantly since the Redknapp days. Without Bale last season they would have been mid table.

  163. 1843:
Stoke v Man Utd (1945 GMT)
    David Moyes and Mark Hugehs

In the night's other quarter-final, it's Manchester United past versus Manchester United present as Mark Hughes lines up against David Moyes.

Hughes and Moyes themselves are no strangers to the pressure cooker of scrutiny of course - I don't think any managers are any more - both could do with some silverware and will be going for it tonight.

The league cup would be a solid start for Moyes, while Stoke haven't won any major cups since they won this one 41 years ago.

George Eastham got the winner that day as the Potters beat Chelsea 2-1. Can Peter Crouch or Steven Ireland emulate that this year?

  164. 1841:

Over to you lot then - were Spurs right to show AVB the exit door? What went wrong for him?

Is Tim Sherwood the long-term answer? Glenn Hoddle? Who else?

And just how important is the League Cup to these four sides? Do Manchester United fans care about winning it? How about the Hammers or Stoke?

  165. 1838:
DID HE HAVE TO GO?- Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)
    Andre Villas-Boas

Tim Sherwood is the man in possession for Spurs after they binned Andre Villas-Boas on Monday morning of course, hours after Luis Suarez led his defence a merry dance as Liverpool clocked up a humiliating 5-0 win.

Did AVB have to go? Was there any chance he could have stayed? Were Spurs fans pleased to see him go? Is Sherwood the man to keep the job?

A win tonight would be a good start...

  166. 1837:

There's an FA Cup second-round replay on the cards tonight, with the winners set to face Birmingham in round three, while Uwe Rosler's Wigan are on the road in the Championship.

    Here's the script:

Crawley Town v Bristol Rovers (1945 GMT)

Sheffield Wednesday v Wigan Athletic (1945 GMT)

  167. 1835:
    Tim Sherwood

Two matches, extra-time (possibly), even penalties (possibly) as we find out who will join Manchester City and Sunderland in the last four of the Capital One Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United (1945 GMT)

Stoke City v Manchester United (1945 GMT)

  168. 1834:
Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)

I'm not sure many people - let alone Big Sam - would have forecast Tim Sherwood taking charge of Tottenham at any point this season but he certainly is this evening.

The 44-year-old technical co-ordinator is in the hot seat for the foreseeable while the board of directors decide what path they may take but there are whispers that Sherwood is a contender for the long haul.

  169. 1830:
STAND-IN SHERWOOD?- Tottenham v West Ham (1945 GMT)
    Sam Allardyce in 2002

The Reebok Stadium, April 2002. Steffen Iversen gives Tottenham an early lead only for Dean Holdsworth - a second-half substitute for Rod Wallace - to level the scores for Bolton.

Bolton, managed by Sam Allardyce, would stay up that season while Spurs limped to ninth place in the table.

    Tim Sherwood

It is doubtful that Allardyce would have foreseen coming up against two members of that Spurs midfield as managerial rivals some 11 years on. But alongside Gus Poyet, now in charge at Sunderland, in the Tottenham engine room on that day was none other than Tim Sherwood, in his final appearance for the club.

Tonight, Sherwood makes his managerial debut for Spurs at White Hart Lane against Big Sam's West Ham.

    It's a funny old game isn't it?
