As it happened

  1. 1930:
Inter Milan lift the 2010 Champions League trophy

The eve of the Champions League knockout draw. When Europe's elite gather in Nyon to discover their opponents in the last 16. When the path to the final at Lisbon's Estadio da Luz becomes clearer.

Yet three years after being crowned champions of Europe, Inter Milan will not be present. The 2010 winners have fallen on hard times and are struggling to make an impact in Serie A, never mind the continent.

But can Inter take advantage of Napoli's own Champions League heartache and secure an away win that might suggest a recovery is under way?

  2. 1933:
Napoli v Inter Milan (1945 GMT)

Ciao! Naples is still reeling after their team was edged out of the Champions League despite securing 12 points in the group stages. And Rafael Benitez is not a happy man.

"The last team to score that many points and not go to the knockout stages was PSG in 1997," Napoli's former Liverpool and Chelsea manager writes in his Independent column. "What can you do? We look at Zenit St Petersburg who are through from their group with only six points."

Can Benitez's side bounce back by adding to Inter's misery? We're about to find out.

  3. 1935:
Atletico Madrid v Valencia (2000 GMT)

No such worries for Atletico Madrid and their highly talented Brazil forward Diego Costa.

The only team to clinch a last 16 spot with two group games to spare could find themselves pitted against Arsenal or Manchester City in Monday's draw.

But that's tomorrow. Today, Los Rojiblancos must beat Valencia if they are to stand toe-to-toe with Barcelona at the top of La Liga. Team news is on the way.

  4. 1938:
Napoli v Inter Milan (1945 GMT)

Napoli: Rafael, Maggio, Fernandez, Albiol, Reveillere, Inler, Dzemaili, Insigne, Callejon, Mertens, Higuain.

Inter Milan: Handanovic, Campagnaro, Ranocchia, Rolando, Jonathan, Taider, Cambiasso, Alvarez, Nagatomo, Guarin, Palacio.

  5. 1940:
BIG REUNION- Napoli v Inter Milan (1945 GMT)
Rafa Benitez as Inter head coach

Old friends are being reunited at the Stadio San Paolo as the two head coaches meet their former team. Current Inter boss Walter Mazzarri re-established fallen giants Napoli as a force in Serie A in a four-year spell that ended last summer.

Napoli head coach Rafael Benitez has much less pleasant memories of his former employers, with the Spaniard lasting barely six months in 2010 before being dispatched by ex-Inter supremo Massimo Moratti after a run of poor results with the then-reigning Champions League holders.

The teams come into the match with four points separating them in the Serie A table, and Napoli secure in the all-important third and final Champions League qualifying spot. A win for Benitez's men would open a substantial gap between them at this early stage of the season.

So Europe's finest will know in the next 24 hours who they will face in the Champions League round of 16.

Are Bayern Munich strong enough to defend the trophy they lifted at Wembley in May? Can Barcelona dominate Europe once again? Do Atletico Madrid pose a serious threat?

  7. 1948:
    KICK-OFF- Napoli 0-0 Inter Milan

We are under way at a raucous Stadio San Paolo.

Walter Mazzarri appears to be getting a mixed reaction from the Naples crowd that used to adore him. Will he get the last laugh come the final whistle, or will Rafael Benitez's side get back on track in Serie A?

  8. 1950:
Atletico Madrid v Valencia (2000 GMT)

Real Madrid hardly did their title prospects much good after a 2-2 draw at lowly Osasuna on Saturday. Can neighbours Atletico take advantage?

An eighth straight home league win will send Diego Simeone's side five points clear of Real and level on points with leaders Barcelona. But Valencia, who started the day ninth in the table, are unbeaten in their last three La Liga visits to the Vicente Calderon stadium.

A Madrid double - Valencia entertain Real next Sunday in the final game before the winter break - would certainly provide manager Miroslav Dukic, appointed in June, with a lift after a mixed start to life in charge of Los Che.

  9. 1953:
    Napoli 0-0 Inter Milan

It is not just Walter Mazzarri who is returning to Naples as an Inter employer.

Defenders Rolando and Hugo Campagnaro were both members of Mazzarri's Napoli squad last season. Can they prevent Gonzalo Higuain from scoring tonight?

They could have trouble locating him though, as smoke from the pre-match flares currently covers the pitch.

  10. 1955:
    Italian Serie A
    Juventus v Sassuolo

Earlier, Carlos Tevez scored a hat-trick as Juventus went six points clear at the top of Serie A with an easy 4-0 win over lowly Sassuolo.

The Argentine opened the scoring after a fine 15th-minute move involving Fernando Llorente and Arturo Vidal. Defender Federico Peluso made it 2-0, with Tevez netting his side's third goal just before half-time.

The former Manchester City frontman completed his first Juventus hat-trick from Mauricio Isla's cross. Juventus have won eight league games in a row since losing at Fiorentina on 20 October, scoring 19 without conceding.

  11. 1957:
GOAL- Napoli 1-0 Inter Milan - Gonzalo Higuain (9 mins)
    Napoli v Inter Milan

Where did that come from? It has been all Inter in the early stages, but defender Yuto Nagatomo commits the error of heading the ball to a grateful Gonzalo Higuain on the edge of the box who expertly volleys the ball low into the bottom corner of the helpless Samir Handanovic's net.

  12. 2000:
    KICK-OFF- Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia

We've started in Madrid, where Atletico striker Diego Costa is looking to add to the 15 La Liga goals he has scored this season.

  13. 2002:
    Napoli 1-0 Inter Milan

Walter Mazzarri is leaning on the dugout, looking rather expressionless. He will not believe his side have gone behind.

The goal has turned up the volume in Stadio San Paolo however, and the formerly sluggish hosts are buzzing all over Inter.

  14. 2007:
    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia

Slow start in Madrid's Vicente Calderon where both teams have started cautiously. There are rumours inside the stadium that Manchester United manager David Moyes is here on a scouting mission having hot-footed it from his team's 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

  15. 2010:
    Napoli 1-0 Inter Milan
    Fredy Guarin

Inter Milan are working their way back slowly into the game.

Colombia midfielder Fredy Guarin has been linked to Chelsea and Manchester United in the Sunday newspapers, but there has been little for the Premier League scouts to note down apart from a shot from 25 yards that he thunders over the crossbar.

  16. 2014:
    CLOSE!- Napoli 1-0 Inter Milan

Napoli's nippy attacking midfielders are causing problems for Inter. Lorenzo Insigne goes within inches of doubling the hosts' lead as he cracks the outside of the post after cutting across the ball when played in on the right of the penalty area by Dries Mertens.

  17. 2015:
    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia

It is chilly in Madrid and Diego Costa is wearing gloves. He could do with warming himself up a bit more, but the Brazil striker has yet to have sight of Valencia's net.

Valencia are trying ruffle Costa and Oriol Romeu, on loan from Chelsea, is booked for lunging in on Atletico's danger man.

  18. 2020:
    Napoli 1-0 Inter Milan

That is bad defending from Napoli, and an even worse miss from Rodrigo Palacio, as he volleys over when un-marked inside the box after being picked out by Saphir Taider's chipped free-kick.

  19. 2022:
    Napoli 1-0 Inter Milan

Ooooooooo. You have to feel for Inter veteran Esteban Cambiasso as he is floored after taking a blast in a particularly tender area.

    Nobody wants to see that.

  20. 2023:
GOAL- Napoli 1-1 Inter Milan - Esteban Cambiasso (35 mins)
    Esteban Cambiasso celebrates

You cannot keep a good man down, it seems. Esteban Cambiasso shrugs off his earlier blow to sweep the ball high into the Napoli goal from 12-yards out.

The Argentina international was played through into space after Rodrigo Palacio and Ricky Alvarez combine to knick on a low Fredy Guarin cross.

  21. 2024:
    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia
    Atletico Madrid v Valencia

Twenty minutes in and this game has yet to get out of first gear. No saves, no decent attempts. Valencia, two wins in their last eight La Liga outings, will be pleased with how they have started. Atletico are already showing signs of frustration. Someone - anyone - do something. Now. Please.

  22. 2026:
GOAL- Napoli 2-1 Inter Milan - Dries Mertens (38 mins)

That is a simply beautiful first-time strike from Dries Mertens on the edge of the box.

The Belgium winger gets his second goal for Napoli after racing on to a touch-back from Blerim Dzemaili. The former Bolton midfielder outpaces the leaden-footed Andrea Ranocchia to set it up.

  23. 2029:
GOAL- Napoli 3-1 Inter Milan - Blerim Dzemaili (41 mins)

What a few minutes for Rafael Benitez's Napoli as Blerim Dzemaili taps in their third goal.

Napoli old boy Hugo Campagnaro is embarrassed as he gives the ball away cheaply. Dries Mertens then fires in a rocket of a low shot that Samir Handanovic does well to even get a hand to, but the on-rushing Dzemaili is on hand to hoover up the spoils.

  24. 2030:
    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia
    Atletico Madrid v Valencia

Those David Moyes rumours turned out to be just that. The Manchester United manager has actually hot-footed it to Leeds for the 60th BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. He made the right choice. This game is a poor advert for La Liga.

  25. 2034:
GOAL- Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan - Yuto Nagatomo (45 mins)

What a half! Inter get a lifeline deep into injury time as rampaging left wing-back Yuto Nagatomo taps in on the goal-line after Rafael can only get his fingertips to a deft Fredy Guarin cross.

  26. 2039:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

Fredy Guarin did superbly well to get that cross in to reduce Inter's arrears to one goal. The Colombia international looked a certainty to shoot after expertly working himself some space in the box, but his smart use of the ball played in the alert Yuto Nagatomo.

Inter Milan have only been beaten once in Serie A this season. Their sluggish defending this half makes that statistic seem quite remarkable, though their strength of character to keep on pushing in a hostile Stadio San Paolo has to be admired.

  27. 2041:
    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia

If only the excitement was half as good in Madrid as it is in Naples. It's not even a fraction. Atletico have now gone 500 minutes since conceding at home. The trouble is the home fans are in danger of nodding off. David Villa has had half a chance for the hosts. That, in a nutshell, is it.

  28. 2042:
    HALF-TIME- Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

A breathless first half is over in Naples.

  29. 2048:
    HALF-TIME- Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia
    Atletico Madrid v Valencia

Drab. Dull. Boring. The half-time whistle is greeted by a chorus of jeers in the Vicente Calderon.

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa ends a frustrating half with a yellow card for a blatant push in front of the referee. Both goalkeepers have had little to do. It can only get better.

  30. 2050:
    Cristiano Ronaldo

The first half in Naples was full of goals galore, but if you want a real treat, check out the BBC story about Cristiano Ronaldo opening a museum in his honour.

Pictured next to a mannequin version of himself, the Portugal international greeted the press in his native Madeira. The 28-year-old is currently on the shortlist to win a second Ballon d'Or award, but he said the extra room in his museum had not been created to house any specific future trophy.

"It's a special day, I don't want to mention specific ones" he said. "All I want is to win more and if the Ballon d'Or comes, there is extra room here."

  31. 2052:
    KICK-OFF- Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

The second half is under way. Will we be treated to another five-goal haul?

  32. 2055:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia must have a good agent. The giant defender has been caught out for pace time after time in this game.

But in a story that seems to repeat itself every few weeks, he was linked to several of the biggest Premier League clubs during the week.

  33. 2056:

Galatasaray came back down to earth after their thrilling midweek Champions League knockout phase qualification with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Genclerbirligi.

Roberto Mancini's men fell behind to a sixth-minute Bogdan Stancu effort, before ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba equalised with his fifth Super Lig strike of the season. The result means Galatasaray now trail runaway leaders Fenerbahce by 11 points.

Judging by the BBC weather report for Ankara, it seems there was no repeat of the snowy scenes that saw Gala's deciding European match with Juventus suspended then re-played a day later.

  34. 2057:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

Rolando certainly looks a better bet for anyone looking for a centre-back than Andrea Ranocchia. The on-loan Porto man sticks out a long leg to produce a stunning last-ditch tackle to deny Gonzalo Higuain a ninth Serie A goal of the season.

  35. 2058:
Fiorentina striker Giuseppe Rossi after scoring his 13th Serie A goal of the season

Serie A top scorer Giuseppe Rossi nets his 13th goal of the season as Fiorentina ease to a comfortable 3-0 win against strugglers Bologna.

The Italy international's delicately weighted second-half lob continues his remarkable return to regular action after spending much of the last two years on the sidelines after a succession of serious knee injuries.

  36. 2059:
    GET INVOLVED- #bbceurofooty

Roberto Butelli: What has happened to my beloved Inter?

  37. 2102:
    KICK-OFF- Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia

Atletico are supposed to be Barcelona's main challengers for the La Liga title. Not on this evidence. Time for Diego Simeone's players to stand up and be counted if they are serious about being crowned champions.

We're back under way in Madrid. To be fair to Atletico, they are up against a very well drilled Valencia side.

  38. 2103:
    HALF-TIME- Lyon 2-1 Marseille

It is half-time in France and Lyon are leading Marseille 2-1. Goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Bafetimbi Gomis put the hosts in front, only for André-Pierre Gignac to take advantage of some suspect goalkeeping in injury-time to give l'OM a lifeline.

  39. 2105:
    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia

Less than three minutes into the new half at the Vicente Calderon and we've already seen more entertainment than the whole of the previous 45 minutes.

Diego Costa gets away from his marker before firing the game's first shot on target which Valencia's goalkeeper does well to get down and save.

  40. 2107:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

No goals thus far in the second half but that is not for want of trying. The visitors had started the brighter but Jose Callejon fires a 20-yard shot just wide of the Inter post with Samir Handanovic left statuesque in his goalmouth.

  41. 2109:

One smart free-kick aside, Saphir Taider has contributed very little for Inter Milan. Walter Mazzarri gives him the hook and throws on bright Croatia youngster Mateo Kovacic.

  42. 2110:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

Fredy Guarin is quietly having a very effective game for Inter Milan.

He is denied a shot on goal by the covering Federico Fernandez after appearing to be winning a leg-race with the Napoli defender after smartly tapping the ball into space.

  43. 2112:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan
    Napoli cheerleaders

The Christmas spirit is on show at Stadio San Paolo as the Napoli cheerleaders celebrate the festive period.

  44. 2114:
    Atletico Madrid 0-0 Valencia

At last this game is beginning to stir.

Moments after Diego Costa produces the game's first shot on target, Valencia counter through former Real Madrid midfielder Sergio Canales, who screws a good opportunity wide.

Then Turkey midfielder Arda Turan fires over for the hosts.

  45. 2114:
GOAL- Atletico Madrid 1-0 Valencia - Diego Costa (59 mins)
    Atletico Madrid v Valencia

The Vicente Calderon comes alive as Diego Costa - who else? - cuts inside and fires a quality low finish into the Valencia net to give the hosts a lead they had been threatening since the start of the new half.

Finally we have a game. Can Valencia respond?

  46. 2115:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

Napoli goalkeeper Rafael is undergoing lengthy treatment after being hurt when bravely rushing out to deny Fredy Guarin.

There is plenty of heat spray and magic sponge action going on in the Napoli goalmouth. Pepe Reina is on the substitutes' bench, but has question marks about his fitness.

  47. 2117:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

In the end, Rafael gives the thumbs up to the coaching staff and the Brazilian stays on the pitch. Pepe Reina puts his bib back on.

No need to test the fitness of the Liverpool loanee.

  48. 2118:
RED CARD- Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

That seemed very harsh. Inter midfielder Ricky Alvarez is dismissed after picking up a second yellow card for handball.

The Argentina international looked to be unaware of the ball, and did not seem to move his hand towards it.

  49. 2118:
GOAL- Atletico Madrid 2-0 Valencia - Raul Garcia (63 mins)

Anything Diego Costa can do, Raul Garcia. . . .The 27-year-old former Osasuna midfielder has only just come on as a substitute and needs little time to settle as he fires home his 10th goal of the season, a low angled finish from seven yards.

Two more goals and Atletico go top of La Liga.

  50. 2125:
    SUBSTITUTION- Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

Napoli goalscorer extraordinaire Gonzalo Higuain trudges off with an injury and is replaced by former West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami.

  51. 2127:
    Napoli 3-2 Inter Milan

It is hard to spot which team has 10 men at the moment. Inter are the team in the ascendancy despite being a goal, and a player, in arrears.

Rodrigo Palacio is the latest player to work himself into space, but he can only squeeze in a weak drive.

  52. 2128:
GOAL- Napoli 4-2 Inter Milan - Jose Callejon (81 mins)

And just like that it is over for Inter Milan. Jose Callejon moved into the middle of the attack when Gonzalo Higuain went off, and he is on-hand to tap-in from close-range from Lorenzo Insigne's cross-shot.

Rafael Benitez studiously writes down some notes in trademark style as his players and the Stadio San Paolo crowd celebrate a certain win against old boy Walter Mazzarri.

Ben: Surely Premier League clubs should be looking at Diego Costa in January. 20 goals in 20 games this season.

  54. 2132:
    PENALTY- Atletico Madrid 2-0 Valencia

Saved. Diego Costa has a chance to put the game out of Valencia's reach after he is brought down by Víctor Ruiz but this time Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves denies the Atletico forward with a fine save.

  55. 2132:
    Napoli 4-2 Inter Milan
    Walter Mazzarri

We are into the final five minutes between Napoli and Inter Milan. This is going to be some comeback now for the visitors to sustain their record of only one Serie A defeat this season.

Jack Mcardle: Can only see Bayern retaining the Champions League, the most depth of any squad in the competition.

  57. 2135:
    PENALTY- Atletico Madrid 2-0 Valencia

Fireworks at the Vicente Caldron as Diego Costa is again fouled inside the Valencia area - this time by Antonio Barragan. The referee points to the penalty spot.

  58. 2137:
GOAL- Atletico Madrid 3-0 Valencia - Diego Costa (80 mins)
    Atletico Madrid v Valencia

It has taken Diego Simone's side time to get going but they are coasting to victory now thanks to more poor defending by Valencia.

After Antonio Barragan's clumsy challenge on Diego Costa, the Atletico forward picks himself up and this time he makes no mistake as he seals victory for the hosts.

As it stands they stand toe-to-toe with Barcelona at the top of La Liga. One more goal and they go to the summit.

  59. 2138:
    PENALTY- NAPOLI 4-2 Inter Milan

Goran Pandev is felled in the box by Rolando seconds after coming on as a substitute...

  60. 2139:
MISSED PENALTY- Napoli 4-2 Inter Milan

Former Inter man Goran Pandev steps up to the spot, but his effort is saved low to the left of giant goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

  61. 2142:
    FULL-TIME- Napoli 4-2 Inter Milan
  62. 2145:
    Napoli 4-2 Inter Milan

Rafael Benitez wins the battle of the former bosses as his Napoli side see off 10-man Inter Milan.

The result hands the third-placed Neapolitans a five-point lead over Fiorentina, and moves them seven points ahead of now fifth-placed Inter. In Serie A, third place is the final Champions League qualifying spot.

    GET INVOLVED- #bbceurofooty

Ryan: Letting go of Falcao has given Diego Costa a new lease of life and the platform to terrorise defenders.

  64. 2148:
    FULL-TIME- Atletico Madrid 3-0 Valencia
  65. 2155:
    Mario Balotelli

The win for Napoli moves them two points behind second-placed Roma, having played a game more. Rudi Garcia's side are in action tomorrow night when they travel to an out-of-sorts AC Milan.

  66. 2155:
    Atletico Madrid 3-0 Valencia

Level on points with Barcelona. Six wins in seven La Liga games. Into the last 16 of the Champions League. And owner of one of the most prolific strikers in Europe. Life is pretty good for Atletico Madrid right now.

Diego Costa adds another two goals to his tally as they pull five points clear of neighbours Real Madrid and join Barcelona level on points at the top of La Liga following a comfortable victory over Valencia, who were victims of their own downfall.

  67. 2156:
    Lucas Piazon

Eredivisie leaders Vitesse remain two points ahead of reigning champions Ajax after both sides enjoy victories on Sunday.

Arsenal target Davy Klaassen struck deep into injury time to secure a 2-1 win for second-placed Ajax at lowly SC Cambuur. Vitesse responded with a 3-2 triumph of their own against NAC Breda, with Chelsea loanee Lucas Piazon taking his goalscoring tally for the season to 10 with a brace.

Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven won their first match in eight after beating Utrecht 5-1.

  68. 2159:

Bayer Leverkusen remain in second place, but suffered a disappointing first home defeat of the Bundesliga season to strugglers Eintracht Frankfurt that leaves them seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Elsewhere, Schalke 04 moved up to sixth with a 2-0 win against Freiburg.

  69. 2200:

And that's a wrap for another weekend of European football. All eyes turn to Nyon and Monday's draw for Champions League round of 16.

Thanks for your company and we'll be back next weekend for another packed European programme that features the Milan derby. Until then arrivederci.
