Southend missed the chance to close the gap on the top three after they shared a point with Rochdale.
Rochdale took the lead through Jamie Allen who fired a well-struck effort in to the top corner of the net via the underside of the crossbar.
A double goal-line clearance from Luke Prosser stopped Rochdale making it 2-0 before Kevan Hurst levelled prior to half time with a well-struck shot.
The Shrimpers came close to winning it when Barry Corr headed against the bar.

Rochdale manager Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester:
"It was a tough game in tough conditions.
"I think we showed our heart and I believe that if we'd have scored a second goal, we would have won the game.
"The equaliser was unfortunate, probably avoidable, but I'm relatively pleased to come to Southend and get a point."
