Inverness marked the first match since John Hughes's appointment as manager with a hard-earned point in Paisley.
They were second best in the first half as St Mirren turned on the style, but could not turn that into a lead.
The hosts might have paid a heavy price for their failure to score as Inverness improved after the break.
But, just as Steven Thompson had struck the woodwork in the first half, Billy McKay and Marley Watkins combined to do likewise in the second.
Hughes watched his new side show improvement in the second half
It preserves both sides' impressive runs, with St Mirren beaten only once in their last eight matches and Inverness Caledonian Thistle unbeaten in six.
The first half very much belonged to St Mirren and had Thompson been able to convert a seventh-minute opportunity, it would have been a goal to grace any game.
From Sean Kelly at left-back, St Mirren made their way upfield with some crisp, one-touch passing involving John McGinn, Paul McGowan and Conor Newton, who slipped in Jason Naismith.
His ball across goal was pushed away by Dean Brill into Thompson's path, but the striker's shot on the turn was well kept out by the keeper.
St Mirren continued to threaten, with Newton having a shot blocked just short of the line and Thompson forcing Brill into an excellent save, with a powerful effort that was tipped onto the post.
Brill saved again from a Kenny McLean free-kick and only in the closing stages of the half did Caley Thistle begin to look remotely menacing, as Aaron Doran and Ross Draper flashed shots wide.
But whatever Hughes had to say at half-time clearly had the desired effect as his side upped their performance in the second half, Doran pulling an early save out of Marian Kello at his near post.
And it was the same post that denied the visitors the opening goal, with McKay and Watkins climbing for the same high ball and between them knocking it against the upright.
Neither side was able to trouble the opposition keeper further as the game rather petered out in the closing stages.
