As it happened

  1. 2227:

That's all from us for the night then. Shane Long's goals have just been compared by Jamie Carragher to strikes from Dennis Bergkamp and Kenny Dalglish. It won't ever get any better than that.

    Good night.

  2. 2220:
MANAGER REACTION- West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa
    Steve Clarke

West Brom boss Steve Clarke: "When you are leading comfortably you feel you should get the three points but Villa made the changes and the energy seemed to unsettle us. We gave away a bad goal and that gave Villa the momentum and they took advantage.

"We missed one clear-cut chance to make it 3-0 and that would be game over. We knew at half-time that the next game would be crucial and we had a similar situation last year when we were the team chasing the game. We wrestled control back at 2-2 and finished well.

"Shane Long has been working hard, he's in a good moment and strikers are like that. His first goal is out of this world and he read the game well for the second. He's been on a good run of form for us and hopefully he can keep that going."

  3. 2213:

We are just waiting for Steve Clarke to speak to the media. Two points dropped? He must think so, especially with that sitter Stephane Sessegnon wasted at 2-0 up.

  4. 2210:

Goal of the weekend? Plenty of competition for that one! Ashley Westwood's first Premier League goal will take some beating in the rest of his career.

  5. 2207:

James: Great to see two English players come off the bench and play a part in changing the momentum of the game for their team.

  6. 2206:
MANAGER REACTION- West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: "In the second half we were fantastic. We were really resolute after being two down after 10 minutes. We spoke about making changes at half-time but we decided to wait a bit, the three of them [Weimann, Agbonlahor and Delph] have been big players for us all season and they made a huge difference. They were only training on Friday. You can never label this team as a team without character. I have nothing but praise for them.

"I thought Ashley Westwood took the game by the scruff of the neck. He is a fine passer of the ball and he can hit them as well. He was terrific for us."

  7. 2202:
PLAYER REACTION- West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar: "If you start a game like that you will be in trouble and we were lucky not to be three down. I am very proud of the turnaround, it shows we are capable of a lot of things and we should be fine. We had to change it at half-time and we did, we played more of the long ball and won more battles in the game. The second goal for us was great. It was magnificent, right in the corner."

  8. 2159:
    Ashley Westwood

That was Ashley Westwood's first goal for Aston Villa. His last one came for Crewe in a 2-0 win against Swindon in League Two in March 2012.

Crewe's other goal that day was scored by Manchester United man Nick Powell. Decent conveyor belt of talent at Gresty Road...

Sean: Villa have now saved seven points from losing positions. There is real resilience there this season. Should find top 10 with ease.

Chelsea Warrior: Two mid-table teams serving a cracker of a game. Where else but in the Premier League? Carry on please

  10. 2154:
    Premier League table

That draw leaves West Brom and Aston Villa where they started the day, locked in midtable on 15 points apiece. Who will finish higher?

  11. 2153:
    Karim El Ahmadi

Four great goals, plenty of action, a point apiece. To see a gallery of images from the WBA-Aston Villa match go to the BBC Sport Facebook page

  12. 2151:
FULL-TIME- West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Christian Benteke clears with a big header and that's that. All square, a game of two halves.

  13. 2150:
    West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

West Brom have a corner, this is the last chance...

  14. 2150:
    West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Morgan Amalfitano wastes a cross, pinging it at Brad Guzan as Steve Clarke is serenaded from the away fans; "2-0, and you messed it up..."

  15. 2150:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at The HawthornsWest Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

"It's a frantic finish from West Brom. They're committing bodies forward but it's just the wrong pass at the wrong time."

  16. 2148:

  18. 2145:
    West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Hit Victor! West Brom pumping it long now as we edge into the dying stages. What a cracking game this has been, with a draw probably about right...

  19. 2143:
FINAL FIVE- West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Into the last five minutes. Time for Saido Berahino to nick one from the bench?

  20. 2142:
    West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Rush of blood to the head time as Andreas Weimann hits one from 35 yards on the bounce when he had yards of pitch to run into! It's been that sort of second half. Mad.

  21. 2141:
    West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

The left-backs are now Fabian Delph and Chris Brunt. Maverick.

Eight minutes remain, I predict a 3-3 final score...

  22. 2139:
SUBSTITUTION- West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Shane Long darts to the near post to meet a swirling cross but can't control his strike as Victor Anichebe comes on for West Brom, replacing left-back Goran Popov.

Who needs defenders eh? I agree...

  23. 2138:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at The HawthornsWest Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

"Aston Villa are running all over the place and winning the second balls. It's not pretty but it's effective."

  24. 2137:
    West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

The away end is understandably buzzing now! Into the last 10 minutes of another fine game on this Premier League weekend. The momentum is all with Aston Villa.

  25. 2137:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at the HawthornsWest Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

"That was a poor header by Goran Popov but what a strike by Ashley Westwood. Give great credit to Paul Lambert for making that substitution. I think Villa are going to get the winner."

  26. 2136:
    West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa

Well I said at half-time that a comeback may be possible, but I'm not sure I really believed it. That was a crackerjack of a goal, a real peach of a hit.

  27. 2134:
GOAL- West Brom 2-2 Aston Villa - Ashley Westwood (76 mins)

Oh yes! More bad defending maybe, but a quite superb strike from Ashley Westwood levels the game up. Gabby Agbonlahor's cross is headed away by Goran Popov, but only straight to Westwood 25 yards out. His first touch moves the ball to his right and then as he is closed down by two Albion men he hits a low, swerving drive which flies into the net.

Almost Paul Scholes-like that strike. Almost...

    Ashley Westwood celebrates
  28. 2131:
    West Brom 2-1 Aston Villa

I think we may have had enough of these puns now...

Shane Long hasn't seen much action of late but works the left-wing nicely before drilling a shot at Brad Guzan. His opening barrage remains the difference.

Mr 420: wEl, that's AHMADI it interesting...

  30. 2130:
SUBSTITUTION- West Brom 2-1 Aston Villa

James Morrison makes his 200th appearance for Albion, coming on to replace Stephane Sessegnon, who has finished like some of you will have done at 5-a-side tonight.

There are about 18 minutes left.

  31. 2128:
    West Brom 2-1 Aston Villa

This could be a long 20 minutes for West Brom now. They have been sitting back for much of the second half and now they need to get hold of the ball and take the sting out of Villa.

  32. 2127:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at the HawthornsWest Brom 2-1 Aston Villa

"The goal came from a cross, it's not rocket science. Andreas Weimann headed it and Karim El Ahmadi reacted first and volleyed in. Game on."

Matt in Bath: People need to be more creative, Herd all these before.

  34. 2125:
GOAL- West Brom 2-1 Aston Villa - Karim El Ahmadi (67 mins)

And they get one back! Not the prettiest build-up as Leandro Bacuna's cross is poor but Andreas Weimann keeps it alive with a smart header back into the mixer, there's a slight hesitation from Boaz Myhill and midfielder Karim El Ahmadi is able to hook the ball in on the half-turn. Fine finish again and game on!

    Karim El Ahmadi scores
  35. 2124:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Christian Benteke's approach play remains strong, chesting the ball down smartly under pressure but his shot is tame and easy for Boaz Myhill. Villa need one now...

  36. 2121:
CLOSE!- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Ah Stephane Sessegnon again! Great chance to kill the game off as Morgan Amalfitano peels away on the left, gets his head up and serves the ball on a plate for Sessegnon, but he can't keep the ball down and slams the shot over the top.

The ball came to him at pace but it was a very good chance.

  37. 2120:
    GET INVOLVED- 81111

Josh in Leeds: There's a man here who won't get off my mountain. I keep telling him to Popov Myhill. Sorry.

Jimmy in Cumbria: It will be a Wei(s)mann who would bet against Agbonlahor coming on and scoring.

Steve in Clapton: Us live text readers are the Brunt of some awful puns!

Dave in Ayrshire: No need to get stressed out over these puns. You know - Bacuna Matata.

Jack, Brighton fan: Everyone, please stop I don't want to Reid this.

  38. 2118:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Still half an hour to go at The Hawthorns. Gabriel Agbonlahor has a knack of scoring in derby games and looks lively from the off, haring around the outside of Gareth McAuley but the man with the Heartbeat theme tune sees him out. Fine defending.

  39. 2118:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at the HawthornsWest Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

"It's refreshing when a manager makes a triple substitution so early in a game. Automatically, it has raised the tempo of the game. Boaz Myhill was a bit fortunate there from Andreas Weimann's shot."

  40. 2116:
CLOSE!- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

And almost an immediate dividend for Villa! Christian Benteke is challenged, the loose ball spins out and Andreas Weimann tonks it with his first touch, a real snorter which deflects off Jonas Olsson and forces Boaz Myhill into an uncomfortable save, squirting the ball wide of the post. Very, very close!

  42. 2115:
SUBSTITUTION- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Not one, not two but three changes for Villa.

Libor Kozak is replaced by Gabby Agbonlahor, Andreas Weimann comes on for Aleksandar Tonev and Fabian Delph is on for Yacouba Sylla. That's the way to do it Paul.

  43. 2113:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Rumbling on the Villa bench as West Brom put together their best move of the second half. Morgan Amalfitano runs into the box before Steven Reid's cross is hacked away at the back post.

    Paul Lambert
  44. 2113:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at the HawthornsWest Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

"Villa are putting 40-yard balls into the box, they are not getting in behind the West Brom defence. There is no dynamism in their play and the full-backs are not getting forward."

  46. 2111:
YELLOW CARD- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

It's the first booking of the night, and it's an accumulation of fouls which does for Youssouf Mulumbu as he chops down Aleksandar Tonev and sees yellow. Albion content to sit back and see what Villa have got for now.

  48. 2106:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

A member of Paul Lambert's backroom staff is showing some tactical info to Gabriel Agbonlahor on the bench. Either that or his holiday snaps. Agbonlahor may be on shortly then but he's still sitting in the dugout wearing what looks like a sleeping bag so he won't be imminent.

On the pitch, Christian Benteke wins a few challenges but there's no end product and the Belgian is looking frustrated.

  49. 2104:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

How long until Paul Lambert sends for the cavalry? Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor must be coming on. Surely.

  50. 2103:

  53. 2059:
    Leon Best

Here's one for Shane Long to chase. Only two Irishmen have scored hat-tricks in the Premier League.

Robbie Keane - of course - and Republic of Ireland legend Leon Best...

  54. 2055:

Yep, those goals were as good again on the half-time replays. Wonderful finishing, awful defending. A recipe for entertainment.

  55. 2051:
IT'S BEEN DONE BEFORE- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

A glimmer of hope for Villa fans maybe, as I delve into the archives of my mind for another game I was at when Shane Long scored twice past the Villa.

Long's brace put Reading 2-0 up in the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2010, but Villa roared back thanks to a hat-trick from John Carew. Can they do it again?

  56. 2051:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at the HawthornsWest Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

"A fantastic performance by West Brom, Shane Long's first goal is a contender for goal of the month. It was terrible defending and the defenders will get a rollicking at half-time for sure. Villa have no-one down their right and they need to make a tactical change."

  57. 2050:
GO LONG- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa
    Shane Long

That was a lesson in 'occupying the defence' from Shane Long. You cannot pin the man down really, he is everywhere, drifting into the channels, spinning in behind and - tonight at least - finishing like a demon.

HALF-TIME- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa
  61. 2046:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

A one-man wrecking ball, Youssouf Mulumbu makes his way clumsily though three tackles in midfield before mincing his own team-mate Claudio Yacob. Serious midfield enforcing.

  62. 2044:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Into the last few minutes of the half. Paul Lambert may be getting busy in the changing rooms. Agbonlahor, Weimann on?

"You should have gone to the [Christmas] market" is the song from the stands.

Harry G Ferrin: Hoping Benteke isn't going to join the list of one-season wonders. Jelavic and Cisse to name two. Still early days though.

Adam Momoniat: Shane Long, one of the most underrated players in the Premier League. Spurs could do with his movement and ability up top.

Matt Cairns: Could be a Long night for Villa. Sorry I couldn't help it!

Cheers Matt - that's our headline sorted. We'll send the sub-editors home...

  64. 2039:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

West Brom moving the ball around in midfield nicely now, Youssouf Mulumbu to the fore. The TV companies have got their money's worth from the televised games this weekend. It's been another cracker so far.

  65. 2034:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

This could be about 5-2 now. Christian Benteke has a good opening for Villa, as a free-kick is not dealt with and the Belgian slams his volley wide of the near post.

Moments later Benteke goes for a curler from 25 yards and only finds the backside of team-mate Karim El Ahmadi. If Villa can get one back before the break they'll be in with a shout.

  66. 2034:
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live at the HawthornsWest Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

"For Villa, I'd think about changing tactics, changing formation and maybe making a substitution at this early stage. They have nobody down their right-hand side."

  67. 2032:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Shane Long has had his Weetabix this morning! Every time he gets it he looks like scoring, like a West Midlands-based Ronaldo. He gets the ball in his own half, gets his head down and hits top gear, with Ron Vlaar backing away nervously until Long arrives at the edge of the area and smashes in a shot which Brad Guzan just about shovels away. Get the ball to the number nine...

  69. 2029:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Shane Long is in again! Another great touch as he beats a static offside trap but Ron Vlaar gets across well to make a great tackle. That would have been curtains.

  70. 2028:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

We have now had 300 goals in the Premier League this season. Most of them this weekend it feels. Villa are pressing Albion well now as they look for a foothold in the game.

Out of nowhere, some brilliance from the Villa front two! Christian Benteke flicks the ball on, Libor Kozak controls it with a - well, a Shane Long-style touch - and then hammers a rising shot against the angle of post and bar from 20 yards! What a touch, what a strike...

  73. 2024:
    West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Whoever pulled the plug on Shane Long to Hull is looking like a genius now. As far as Albion are concerned anyway, I'm sure Hull fans won't agree.

  77. 2020:
SITTER!- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa

Goodness me what a miss! It should be three. Morgan Amalfitano picks out a perfect cross from the right, Stephane Sessegnon is unmarked four yards out but completely fluffs his lines, hitting his back foot and getting it all wrong. That was woeful.

  78. 2019:

  83. 2011:
GOAL- West Brom 2-0 Aston Villa - Shane Long (11 mins)

From the ridiculous to the sublime. Villa's Leandro Bacuna plays a suicidal ball across his defence, a horrible, wretched pass, straight to Shane Long. But he still has work to do, and does it brilliantly! His first touch sends him away from Nathan Baker and he then chips a deft finish over the head of Brad Guzan and in off the underside of the bar. Confident? I should coco...

West Brom fans are singing a song about Gareth McAuley to the tune of Buddy Holly's 'Heartbeat.' I can't quite make out the lyrics but I'm sure they are superb.

  87. 2006:
GREAT SAVE!- West Brom 1-0 Aston Villa

Great start to this game. Aston Villa counter up the other end, Aleksandar Tonev thrashes in a shot which deflects off the head of Gareth McAuley and forces Boaz Myhill into a reflex save. That was travelling!

  88. 2004:
GOAL- West Brom 1-0 Aston Villa - Shane Long (3 mins)

    What a goal! Special!

Chris Brunt fires a quarterback style pass over the top from inside his own half, Shane Long watches it drop over his shoulder before killing the ball with a wonderful first touch. He then shifts it on to his left foot, wrongfooting Nathan Baker, and hammers in a low shot into the corner. Brilliant goal!

BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian DennisWest Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

"If last season's 2-2 draw here is anything to go by then we could be set for another absorbing West Midlands derby. Albion are unbeaten in the last five meetings but prior to that run Villa were undefeated in 17 league and cup matches that covered a 26-year period. Not since the early blossom of spring have Steve Clarke's side won successive home matches and they face a Villa team who have developed a miserly streak on the road this season."

Loads of your views coming in on what makes a 'big club'. Keep your ideas coming in:

Chandiran V: Easy to define 'big club' in modern day: Higher number of followers in official team page in Facebook or Twiiter

Shanks: More worldwide fans = more money = more chance of winning = massive club. 21st century truth :)

Billy Speakman: A big club is when the team is consistently good throughout time eg Everton and Villa. Not through how much money spent.

  97. 1944:
West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)
    Christian Benteke

Christian Benteke scored a screamer for Villa at West Brom last season, but the big man has not scored in any of his last five Premier League appearances; his longest goal drought in the competition since joining Aston Villa.

Will he find his shooting boots again tonight?

  98. 1943:

Charlie's formula may be the best one I've heard yet. Can you buy your team's kit in Tokyo? No? You don't support a big club...

  99. 1941:

I asked you what makes a club a 'big club'. Keep your ideas coming in:

Charlie Keohane: When you can travel from the the UK to Japan and go into a sports shop and see your club's shirt, that's when you're a big club

CalRob: Fanbase but also history of the club, legends, memorable matches etc

Paul Thompson: West Brom at the moment have more potential than Villa. Does this make them a bigger club though? I'm not so sure...

Chris Bloomfield: A big club is a team that brings the community together and does more than just playing football. Winning things does that.

  100. 1940:
WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY- West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)
    The Hawthorns

West Brom boss Steve Clarke: "Villa play well on the road, they are set up to defend well and have two big boys up front. We have to be patient and pass the ball well and be clinical when we get our chances. The nation gets the chance to watch what is usually a very competitive game tonight."

Villa manager Paul Lambert: "We played well last time out against Cardiff. We've got a few from the injury room back so the team picked itself. Any derby game you play, it doesn't really matter what form you're in. The away support for us is fantastic and this will be a good atmosphere. If we play with our brains hopefully we will win."

  101. 1937:

Just under 20 minutes to go until kick-off then. A win for either side tonight would see them move just one place, above Swansea, into the top half of the table.

  102. 1934:

I asked you what makes a club a 'big club'. Keep your ideas coming in:

Tom in Hull: Villa are still a big club. But only just. Haven't won enough in recent times. It's a combination of factors. Size of ground, size of fanbase, recent success, past success. But not necessarily in that order...

Harry, Birmingham: Villa aren't a massive club, as they haven't won anything for a long time. That said, they are certainly a big club and a much bigger club than West Brom.

Chris: Don't you start on Derby Rostance! Pride of the Midlands.

    I wasn't Chris! Don't worry...

  103. 1933:
West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

As a few of you have pointed out, West Brom's bench is also very tasty tonight. With Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe, James Morrison, Saido Berahino and Matej Vydra to call on, Steve Clarke is not short of options.

  104. 1930:

I asked you what makes a club a 'big club'. Keep your ideas coming in:

Greg Bruce: A mixture. Trophies, fan base and history in general really. Certainly not how much money you can spend.

Okey Ubi: A winning mentality and a positive philosophy make a big club.

  105. 1928:
SIGN UP SAIDO- West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)
    Saido Berahino

Also in the queue for a new deal at The Hawthorns is West Brom striker Saido Berahino, who is expected to sign a new long-term contract in the coming days.

Having scored 12 goals this season for his club and at England Under-21 level, he will earn a significant pay rise on his current £850-per-week deal.

Imagine having to scrape by on £850 a week. That's before tax you know. I'm amazed he can afford to put petrol in his car the poor lad...

I asked you what makes a club a 'big club'. Keep your ideas coming in:

Kristian: Lots of aspects. #NUFC haven't won anything for years but are a massive club. Not to mention the fanbase is superb

Awesome Dawson: Money these days unfortunately. Money makes everything big

ChrisCarsGreen: A big club is a club with a big fanbase and a massive club is a club which has big fanbase and wins things.

  107. 1923:

  108. 1919:
West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

West Brom boss Steve Clarke has won plenty of friends at The Hawthorns since replacing England-bound Roy Hodgson in the summer of 2012, and Albion fans will be pleased to hear this week that the club will hold talks with him after Christmas about extending his contract.

The 50-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the season and Albion's sporting and technical director, Richard Garlick, said the new year is "the appropriate time to address such matters".

Any fans worried? Will you keep hold of your man?

  109. 1918:

That Aston Villa bench could be vital later on this evening. Andreas Weimann, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Fabian Delph - they are all coming back from injury and could make the difference. How fit are they? We'll have to find out.

  110. 1917:
LINE-UPS- West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

West Brom: Myhill, Reid, McAuley, Olsson, Popov, Mulumbu, Yacob, Amalfitano, Sessegnon, Brunt, Long. Subs: Morrison, Anichebe, Luke Daniels, Vydra, Dawson, Berahino, Anelka.

Aston Villa: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Baker, Clark, Westwood, El Ahmadi, Sylla, Tonev, Benteke, Kozak. Subs: Weimann, Agbonlahor, Steer, Delph, Herd, Bowery, Lowton.

  112. 1914:
West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

Charlie Chaplin wasn't born, there were only 38 states in America and the Eiffel Tower was still being knocked up when these two sides had their first league meeting. That is what you call pedigree.

Tonight is the 161st meeting of these sides in league and cup, with Villa currently leading the way on 74 wins and Albion back on 52.

In recent times these games have tended to be tight, with the last three meetings all serving up draws. That doesn't mean dull though - remember last season's 2-2 draw?

  113. 1912:

James Blackwell: No Gabby, Delph, Luna or Weimann starting. Looks very defensive. Another clean sheet and late Gabby winner I hope!

Dave Worley: Not been this nervous pre-game since... Oh, the last time we played Villa... Come on lads!!!

  114. 1908:
GET INVOLVED- West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

The pride of the West Midlands is at stake this evening then. With Wolves and Birmingham not currently dining at the game's top table it's down to Albion and Villa to battle it out.

But Paul Lambert's quotes have raised an age-old footballing question which I am throwing open to the floor:

What makes a football club a 'big club?'

Has anyone got the formula? Is it trophies won? Fanbase? Average attendance? Money spent in the transfer market? And how long can a club claim to be a 'big club' after their last meaningful success? Are Huddersfield still a big club? Leeds? Forest?

Let us know your thoughts on who is a big club and who isn't, and why. You can text in to 81111 (UK Only) - providing you pop a name on there - or tweet us at #bbcfootball

  115. 1907:
THIS IS A MASSIVE CLUB...- West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)
    Paul Lambert

Every club thinks they are bigger than their rivals. Every big club refers to itself as "massive". Every club Robbie Keane signs for is "massive".

But the 'm-word' was thrown liberally in the build-up to tonight's derby by none other than Villa boss Paul Lambert.

"Aston Villa is a massive club," he said. "I don't think anyone can ever dispute that. It's a club that's won a European Cup, league titles, has a massive fanbase and has a bigger stadium.

"That's no disrespect to West Brom at all, they're a good club in their own right.

"I haven't been at West Brom or managed the club but Aston Villa, for me, is a bigger club."

I told you. West Brom have finished above Villa for the past two seasons...

  116. 1904:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

West Brom make one change, with Goran Popov replacing former Villa man Liam Ridgewell, while Villa are unchanged.

West Brom XI: Myhill, Reid, McAuley, Olsson, Popov, Mulumbu, Yacob, Amalfitano, Sessegnon, Brunt, Long.

Villa XI: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Clark, Baker, El Ahmadi, Westwood, Sylla, Tonev, Benteke, Kozak

  117. 1904:
West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)

It's 124 years since the Albion and the Villa first met in the league, as the two inaugural members of the Football League faced off on consecutive weekends in January 1889.

Villa won 2-0 at home at Perry Barr, before a classic 3-3 draw a week later at Stoney Lane, home of the Albion before The Hawthorns.

Stoney Lane had a wooden grandstand called 'Noah's Ark' which travelled with the team to their new ground until it was burned down on bonfire night in 1904. You don't get stand names like that anymore.

Forget the Ark though - tonight it's all about the less glamorously named Smethwick End and the Brummie Road End...

  118. 1900:
124 YEARS AND COUNTING- West Brom v Aston Villa (2000 GMT)
    The Hawthorns

There are 3.4 miles between Villa Park and The Hawthorns. Villa staff and players would have wound their way up Trinity Road and on to Witton Road, swung right at the big roundabout on to Lozells Road, past the chicken shops and takeaways and chemists.

Bear left on to Villa Road and then right at the grand Methodist church, up Soho Road with its tanning shops, cafes, banks and bookies.

On to Holyhead Road, past the supermarket and the floodlights of The Hawthorns emerge on the horizon, the highest ground in the Football League.

It's a short journey but lose tonight and the players will feel every yard on their way back. One of the oldest derbies in the footballing world is about to kick into gear...
