As it happened

  1. 1945:

Thank you for joining me today on a wonderful afternoon of football, with 10 goals in two games. Manchester City went fourth with a 6-0 demolition of Tottenham and Manchester United missed the chance to overtake them by conceding in the last minute to draw 2-2 with Cardiff City.

If you want some more football, our European team are starting their live text of Nantes v Monaco and Bologna v Inter Milan at 1900 GMT.

Premier League text returns tomorrow when West Brom host Aston Villa in the West Midlands derby.

Pearsy: Everton are the big winners in all this, Martinez plays a much better brand of football than Moyes.

  3. 1842:
    Sergio Aguero celebrates

After today's action, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is the Premier League's top scorer this season with 10 goals, one clear of Liverpool duo Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez. Newcastle's Loic Remy is fourth with eight strikes.

Moothead2: As terrible a job Moyes is supposedly doing, they're still only three points off second. He can't score the sitters.

Bob Waters: Disappointed but I do genuinely believe that Moyes will be a success. We got a point at a ground where many teams will get none.

Yullaw: Moyes need to be braver, he's not managing a mid-table team. Now the aim is to be champions. Look for the killer goal!

  5. 1838:
    Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United
    Manchester United

Even though they are now unbeaten in 10 games, you get the feeling all is not well with Manchester United. The majority of fans we've been hearing from this evening aren't best pleased.

Ashlee from Luton: Moyes inherited this squad from Ferguson so shouldn't Ferguson be blamed as well for leaving a slightly dire squad? And well Moyes just is not good enough!!!

Mick: Why Rooney is happy at Manchester United is beyond me, he is literally carrying them at the moment.

    GET INVOLVED- #bbcfootball

Adams Ede: Manchester United playing with fear this season. Who would want to come to a club playing like this???

  9. 1828:
MANAGER REACTION- Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United

Just before the late equaliser, Peter Whittingham had to re-take his free-kick after the first one was called back as Gary Medel and Marouane Fellaini clashed in the box.

Needless to say, both managers had different views on it.

David Moyes: "If you slap someone in the face then you would expect some action to be taken. We actually lost our concentration as the referee gave them a talking to. It gave them two bites at the cherry because they had already delivered the first ball."

Malky Mackay: "He could [Medel have been sent off] but I also look at Fellaini and he puts his head in someone else's face and that is a sending off. That is something that needs to be looked at as well. Overall, I'm happy both sides still had 11 men on the pitch."

  10. 1826:
MANAGER REACTION- Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United
    Malky Mackay

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay: "We played really well. That is the most complete first-half performance this season and we were playing against the champions.

"The belief to play like we did against a team like Manchester United. and press them high - that gives me the most pleasing aspect.

"It was a lovely goal (from Fraizer Campbell) and he almost scored a better one (with the chip). He has got a second chance. He had had a really bad injury and we managed to get him."

  11. 1825:
MANAGER REACTION- Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United
    David Moyes

Manchester United boss David Moyes: "I'm disappointed we didn't take three points. Cardiff made game of it and put us under pressure. We gave away a silly free-kick which led to their second goal and didn't defend it well enough.

"Danny Welbeck had brilliant chance to make it 3-1."

On Rooney: "The boy runs across his path and a yellow card was sufficient. That was not a lash out in any way sort of tackle. It was about feeling hard done by the boy running across his path."

Isaac in London: Never seen such dire tripe from a United team. No leadership, nothing in the middle of the park, no attacking intent. Cleverley needs to be sold for a packet of crisps and a pint. Awful.

Sam: United's midfield really needs a major overhaul. Certain players (i.e. Cleverley, Anderson, Nani, Young) just not good enough. Moyes needs to get rid of the dead wood.

  13. 1821:
Former Manchester United captain Gary NevilleCardiff 2-2 Manchester United

Well an exciting game. Cardiff deserved a point, United didn't get their game going and were battling their way through the game!

  14. 1819:
    Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United

Manchester United boss David Moyes says Wayne Rooney did not deserve to be sent off and "didn't lash out" at Jordon Mutch.

More quotes to follow from the Scot.

  15. 1818:
Arsenal's former Cardiff midfielder Aaron RamseyCardiff 2-2 Manchester United

"Great effort from Cardiff, deserved something from that."

Jack Pollard: They say Moyes needs time but can't see them making any progress under him. Top players won't play for him.

Brendan Bennett: Fellaini doesn't fit into the United side at all. Need to follow in Arsenal's footsteps and buy a world-class midfielder.

Richard Powell: Manchester United without Vidic lack direction and defensive cohesion - especially on set-pieces. Spirited comeback from the Bluebirds.

Matt: January can't come quick enough. Manchester United need to splash the cash.

Olugbenga Sowunmi: The belief is not there anymore. Two great chances for Rooney and Welbeck to wrap it up but they fluffed!!

  19. 1808:
    Juventus celebrate

Over in Italy today, Juventus went top of Serie A with a 2-0 win at Livorno.

Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez scored the goals for the Turin side.

  20. 1806:
    Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United

The stats tell us that a draw was definitely the fair result. Both sides shared possession equally and there was only one shot between the teams.

    GET INVOLVED- #bbcfootball

Zack Jones: May not have that European flair tactically but Malky Mackay sure knows how to get his teams up for the big games.

Rizwan Patel: What did Fellaini actually do today?

Tom W: Got what we deserved in the end despite numerous chances for Welbeck to put the game away.

  22. 1802:
PLAYER REACTION- Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United
    Fraizer Campbell

Cardiff scorer Fraizer Campbell: "We have got a good bunch of lads here. The manager says fight until the last minute and that's what we did. Jordon is capable of passes like that (which set me up for my goal), he does it all the time in training."

  23. 1801:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerCardiff 2-2 Manchester United

"Things really are very different this season."

  24. 1800:
PLAYER REACTION- Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United
    Ben Turner

Cardiff defender Ben Turner: "We played well. We tried to press as high as we could and we went for the win. We kept pushing and happy with result.

"I hold my hands up, it was my mistake (for their goal). Fraizer has pulled us out of the doo-doo.

"I do think he (Rooney) kicked out from where I was but, the way the game is going, I didn't want him sent off as the physicality is going out of the game."

    Joe in London: Kim-possible!

  26. 1759:
    Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United

Of Cardiff's 11 Premier League goals this season, 45% of them have come at home to Manchester City and United.

Tom in Maidstone: It's not just that we're dropping points, its that we're being completely outplayed by the vast majority of teams. Cleverley and Feillani are the worst midfield partnership in the top 10.

  28. 1756:

Cardiff remain in 16th place but move up level on points with Stoke. They are only two points off the top half of the table.

  29. 1756:

Manchester United's dropped points see them miss the chance to go into fourth in the Premier League table. They remain in sixth, one point behind Southampton and rivals City, and seven points off leaders Arsenal.

  30. 1754:
BBC Sport's Steve Claridge at Cardiff City StadiumCardiff 2-2 Manchester United

"In open play, Manchester United were under the cosh. Cardiff had looked to have run out of ideas, however, before they sent in a tremendous free-kick.

"A draw was deserved for Cardiff on the balance of play."

Dj Nice Watch: No matter what you say, some things are obvious. Moyes is a scared coach. Makes poor selections and subs.

Conor Matchett: This is why United won't win the league this year, we simply can't seem to close a game out anymore.

Robert Monkman: Far too willing under Moyes to settle for a one goal win, go into shut down mode after 70 minutes.

  32. 1754:
    Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United
    Kim Bo-Kyung's goal

That goal was Kim Bo-Kyung's first in the Premier League. The 24-year-old South Korea international joined Cardiff from Japanese club Cerezo Osaka for £2m in the summer of 2012 and scored twice last season in the Championship.

  37. 1749:
WHAT A CHANCE- Cardiff 2-2 Manchester United

A remarkable ending, Manchester United should have won it there. Wayne Rooney is played through and he tries to square it to Danny Welbeck, who will have an empty net to slot into. Disastrously for United, he underhits his pass and keeper David Marshall gleefully holds onto it.

  38. 1748:
BBC Sport's Steve Claridge at Cardiff City StadiumCardiff 2-2 Manchester United

"The delivery today has been key from both teams. The smallest player on the pitch has got between several players."

  40. 1746:
BBC Sport's Steve Claridge at Cardiff City StadiumCardiff 1-2 Manchester United

"It has been a more Fellaini-like performance from him today. He has been strong in the air, covered the ground better and made several tackles.

"There is a psychological thing when you change clubs. He needs to move out of his bracket, and prove he has more to his game."

Cardiff City make their final change. Goalscorer Fraizer Campbell, who also hit the bar, comes off and he is replaced by £7.5m summer signing Andreas Cornelius, who makes his return from an ankle injury.

  46. 1738:
    Cardiff 1-2 Manchester United

Danny Welbeck should probably have sealed this game for Manchester United. He plays a one-two with Wayne Rooney and from the return pass blazes over from 16 yards out. A let-off for Cardiff.

  47. 1737:
BBC Sport's Steve Claridge at Cardiff City StadiumCardiff 1-2 Manchester United

"It is a real lull in the game at the moment. I cannot see too many chances coming at the moment for Cardiff.

"They looked much more dangerous earlier in the match. You feel the danger has gone out of the game from a Manchester Untied perspective."

  48. 1737:
    Cardiff 1-2 Manchester United

  49. 1733:

Former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson is watching from the stands. After a shaky start under David Moyes following Ferguson's retirement, this would be 10 games unbeaten in all competitions.

  53. 1730:
    SUBSTITUTION- Cardiff 1-2 Manchester United

Manchester United bring on Cardiff-born Ryan Giggs, who faces his hometown club for the first time in his lengthy career. He turns 40 next week.

Javier Hernandez is the man to come off.

Alex Walker: Fellaini has been a passenger for United. Second best to every 50-50, not good enough.

  55. 1728:
    Cardiff 1-2 Manchester United

Cardiff have the first chance of the game as Jordon Mutch crosses the ball but David De Gea just gets there before Fraizer Campbell can make it 1-0 to the hosts.

Moments later, at the other end Wayne Rooney has a shot blocked.

  109. 1603:
BBC Sport's Steve Claridge at Cardiff City StadiumCardiff 0-0 Manchester United

"Adnan Januzaj has the ability to play all across the midfield, but he will provide Manchester United today with real width. That is something they lack when Kagawa plays.

"Cardiff will try and make it tight, but the United team look expansive."

  117. 1555:
MANAGER REACTION- Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham
    Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, who says Joe Hart will start against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Wednesday, tells BBC Sport: "It is impossible to play better than today. We are working to have one style of playing and continue in the same way.

"All my teams normally score a lot of goals. Real Madrid scored more than 100 in a whole season. Here in Manchester City not only Aguero and Negredo are incredible but others too and Fernandinho and Nasri did really well also today.

"All of them are comfortable in this style, all creative players. I don't believe in stats in football. Football has some relation with mathematics but not always. We're thinking just about each game, now we play in the Champions League on Wednesday and after we see what happen with others teams, how many points they drop, and I'm absolutely sure we will also win matches away."

  118. 1553:
MANAGER REACTION- Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

More from Andre Villas-Boas: "There is an immediate shock after 15 seconds.

"The concentration was not there, but the reaction of the players was positive. Everything went wrong for us, every opportunity was a goal and we paid a heavy price, too much for what we deserved.

"City were excellent, and we were extremely poor.

"My responsibility is to lift the players, there is always another game coming. We have to give a response in the Europa League.

"We have to be ashamed of ourselves, and react to a defeat like this."

  119. 1550:
MANAGER REACTION- Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham
    Andre Villas-Boas

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas to BBC Sport: "It was a difficult start for us. After that, everything you had in mind goes down the drain.

"It was difficult for us, there is not a lot of positives after that. We had a good spell of reaction after we suffered the early goals, but everything happened so quickly.

"Our only chance came in the first half. If it goes to 1-1 it is a different game."

  120. 1549:
    Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

A very sombre looking Andre Villas-Boas talking to the media after the match. Quotes to come from him very soon before we turn our attentions to Cardiff.

  121. 1540:
    Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

Manchester City have now scored more goals at home in the league this season than any other Premier League side have done in total.

  122. 1538:
SPURS' STATISTICAL SHOCKERS- Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

As a modern-thinking manager, I am sure Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is a fan of statistics. The Portuguese might not be as keen to put this in his next presentation, however, after a brutal day at Etihad Stadium.

The 6-0 defeat by Manchester City was only the 10th time in Tottenham's entire history that they've lost a league game by a margin of six or more goals.

  123. 1535:
The Magical Magyars and Manchester United managers
Hungary thrashed England at Wembley in November 1953

Monday is the 60th anniversary of England's infamous 6-3 defeat by Hungary at Wembley. You might not expect the 'Magical Magyars' and former Manchester United managers Ron Atkinson and Tommy Docherty to have much in common, but they were actually all inspired by the same remarkable Englishman.

Jimmy Hogan was his name and he was a pioneering coach across Europe in the first half of the 20th Century.

His favoured tactics, which demanded versatility and the ability to pass the ball on what he always called "the carpet", were a forerunner of what would become known in the 1970s as 'Total Football' but he paid a heavy price back home for being a few decades ahead of his time, and was largely ignored.

  124. 1532:
PLAYER REACTION- Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri: "It was really good. We showed against a big squad that we always respond at home. You don't see 6-0 that often but we've maintained our good form at home. For me, all the goals were really nice; it's difficult to pick one. I'm not just happy about the performance, the goals and the way we played, but the clean sheet as well."

    Samir Nasri

Paul in North London: Nothing has gone right in sport this weekend, but this is one of the worst Spurs performances I've ever seen. Toothless with the ball, no width, no sharpness, no-one running in behind. Our defence has been utterly embarrassed. How many times did we harmlessly pass across in front of Manchester City's back-four?!! Pathetic. I respect AVB as a manager and I'm not calling for his head... But how does he turn this around?

  127. 1530:
    Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham
    Sergio Aguero

While Spurs were dreadful today, Manchester City were scintillating. And in Sergio Aguero, they have the form player in the Premier League - it's 14 goals in his last 11 games for the club.

After the game the Argentine said: "We're very happy and now we want to continue in the same way."

Manchester City have scored in 56 consecutive Premier League home games since a 0-0 draw with Birmingham in November 2010.

  213. 1354:
Former Man City midfielder Nigel Gleghorn on BBC Radio ManchesterManchester City 1-0 Tottenham

"Manchester City are vulnerable as they are not working hard enough. We need to squeeze out 30 yards and get the midfield higher up the pitch to engage the opposition.

"Going forward, however, Manchester City are too good for Tottenham."

  214. 1354:

Manchester City fail to clear a corner and Erik Lamela lines up a shot only for his Tottenham team-mate Younes Kaboul to get in the way.

  215. 1352:
    Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham

Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado scuffs a shot wide of the goal but he will have to do a lot better than that if Spurs are to equalise.

  216. 1351:
Former Man City midfielder Nigel Gleghorn on BBC Radio ManchesterManchester City 1-0 Tottenham

"It looks to me like Martin Demichelis is carrying a knock after a tackle on Jan Vertonghen. If he has to come off, I would bring on Micah Richards but Manuel Pellegrini does not seem to fancy him in the middle."

  217. 1351:
YELLOW CARD- Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham

Tottenham midfielder Sandro is the first player to be booked for a foul on Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

  218. 1350:

If we're being honest, we all hope to see Emmanuel Adebayor come on for Tottenham today, don't we?

Mark in Sussex: Game over for Spurs within 15 seconds as they can't score a goal to save their lives.

    Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham

  226. 1340:
    Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham

Jesus Navas's strike is the second fastest in the Premier League this season.

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic scored after 13 seconds in the 1-1 draw with Southampton earlier this month.

  228. 1338:
    Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham

This is more open than yesterday's Merseyside derby! Manchester City's Sergio Aguero plays a one-two with Alvaro Negredo and he attempts to chip Hugo Lloris but this time the Frenchman is equal to his effort this time.

  229. 1337:
    Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham

A shaky moment for Manchester City keeper Costel Pantilimon now. He fails to deal with Kyle Walker's low cross and Erik Lamela is unable to turn the ball into the net, with Martin Demichelis clearing.

  230. 1336:

GOAL- Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham - Jesus Navas (1 min)

Manchester City lead within 14 seconds. Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris kicks the ball straight to Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero. The Argentine's shot is saved by Lloris but Jesus Navas lofts in a wonderful chip from the edge of the box to make it 1-0. Remarkable start.

Tottenham's last game before the international break was a remarkable 1-0 defeat at Newcastle. Tim Krul made 14 saves in a goalkeeping masterclass as Tottenham failed to score with 31 shots.

I can't see them getting 31 shots in today somehow.

Remarkably, Manchester City are still paying Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor £95,000 a week.

When the 29-year-old Togo international moved from City to Spurs in 2010, he would not accept a pay-cut and so City agreed to pay the difference in his wages (he was on £175,000 a week at City and Spurs pay him £80,000 a week).

"The way football is played today, managers want goalkeepers to build the play up from the back. I sometimes question why my son, Kasper, does not play it long for Leicester, for example.

"I was not too bad with my feet, I never did what Artur Boruc did for Southampton. In my mind, my job was to get the ball away from the goal.

"Sir Alex Ferguson would have tried to put me in Row Z if I had done that! I would also have had to deal with Roy Keane, Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister on the pitch."

"Referees must be made accountable for their mistakes. They should not referee anywhere the next week.

"Manchester City's fifth league defeat last season came against Tottenham, but that's merely a coincidental footnote to this fixture. The main point is that it came on 21 April, with loss number four having not been suffered until March.

"In historical and statistical terms, with four defeats already City's chances of regaining the title aren't great.

"Spurs' confidence has been hit by two games without a win. No team has tried to score more often than Tottenham and yet, prior to this weekend, only the bottom two - Sunderland and Crystal Palace - had scored fewer goals.

Robbie Savage and Mark Lawrenson were discussing today's match between Manchester City and Tottenham on Football Focus yesterday.

"I feel Man City have got the best squad. But they do need to improve away from home. I think they will win the league. With the system Tottenham play, it's difficult for Soldado. He is isolated up front on his own," Savage said.

And Lawrenson thinks: "Manchester City will go undefeated at home this season. Defoe scores for fun, but would you leave him up front on his own? No, because he doesn't work hard enough."

Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas could name Manchester City's former striker Emmanuel Adebayor on the bench.

  265. 1221:
    Kevin Mirallas on Luis Suarez

Two of the main talking points of yesterday's Premier League games were controversial decisions - one that ended in a dismissal and another than didn't.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet wants Wes Brown's red card in the defeat at Stoke to be rescinded - and for referees' chief Mike Riley to apologise. Brown tackled Charlie Adam and appeared to win the ball and not touch the Potters midfielder.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers felt Everton's Kevin Mirallas should have been dismissed for a knee-high studs-up challenge on Luis Suarez in the Merseyside derby. The Belgian was only booked and went on to assistant a couple of goals.

  266. 1217:
Manchester City v Tottenham (1330 GMT)
Fernando Torres scores past Joe Hart

One of the main talking points in today's line-ups will be if Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart returns after being dropped.

Boss Manuel Pellegrini has hinted in the build-up Costel Pantilimon will keep his place in goal.

Hart was dropped following several high-profile mistakes after an extended period of indifferent form.

He was also left out of England's team for the defeat by Chile but returned for the loss to Germany, making a few quality saves.
