Terry Butcher's first match as Hibernian manager ended in a goalless draw against St Mirren.

Steven Thompson missed an excellent early chance for the hosts and also nodded over in the second half.

Hibs mainly threatened through headers, with James Collins, Scott Robertson and Liam Craig all going close.

St Mirren pressed for a late winner but John McGinn's rasping drive flew wide in injury time, bringing a disappointing match to a close.

Though Hibs' sequence of four successive defeats comes to an end, they go a fifth straight match without scoring and a sixth without victory.

And St Mirren, now unbeaten in three, remain a point behind Hibs.

Butcher was in the dugout after appealing against a touchline ban related to his latter days at Inverness and made changes to the Hibs team which lost to the Highlanders two weeks ago, with Paul Cairney, Liam Craig and Danny Handling earning starts.

Collins was one of those dropped but the striker was given an early reprieve when he replaced the injured Paul Heffernan.

By then St Mirren should have opened the scoring after Paul McGowan had found Thompson in the inside right channel.

Butcher (right) and assistant Maurice Malpas opened their Hibs tenure with a point

The striker took a touch as he was closed down by Ryan McGivern but miscued his shot away from goal.

Hibs were slow to threaten but when they did, it was Collins who looked most prominent.

The substitute glanced a header into the grasp of goalkeeper Marian Kello and then claimed unsuccessfully for a penalty following Darren McGregor's challenge.

Moments later, McGregor's aerial presence in the other box caused Hibs concern as his downward header was cleared off the line by Alan Maybury.

Chances continued to be at a premium in the second half and the visitors had another scare when Thompson headed over.

The task facing Butcher in terms of reversing Hibernian's status as Scottish football's lowest league scorers was apparent as his new charges struggled to get out of their own half for long periods.

Jason Naismith volleyed wide of Ben Williams' goal and the keeper held a low drive from Thompson.

However, Hibs did eventually gain a foothold in the game with a series of crosses into the St Mirren box and Robertson and Craig both tested Kello.

Robertson also got his head to a Craig corner but could not keep his attempt down.

And the result was confirmed when McGinn flashed his effort wide from the edge of the box.
