Rhys Murphy's seventh goal of the season fired Dagenham & Redbridge to victory against 10-man Southend United.
Defender Mark Phillips was sent off for a reckless challenge on Murphy before he gave them the lead.
The former Arsenal trainee sent a neat, chipped finish over the head of the advancing Shrimpers keeper Daniel Bentley in the 31st minute.
The closest the hosts came to scoring was a powerful 20-yard shot from substitute Freddy Eastwood.
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Southend United manager Phil Brown told BBC Essex:
"The referee, the guy in the middle, is getting backed into the corner by the assistants.
"Gone are days where they are just there to do throw-in's and offsides, now they are getting really involved in a lot of the key issues.
"I thought the referee was closer to the incident [Mark Phillips's red card], if he didn't believe it was a sending-off, why did he send him off?
"The linesman has backed him into a corner and he's issued a red card. All my players tell me he was about to give Mark Phillips a yellow card."
