As it happened

  1. 2214:

It wasn't pretty, it wasn't the best, but England at least didn't lose tonight and remain in pole position to qualify from Group H.

And cheer up everyone, the Champions League is back next week...

    See you all later on.

  2. 2213:

Shouma Khan: How many other top teams have two past their prime midfielders in the centre of the park? Answer - none.

Anthony Amodeo: Roy Hodgson's pessimistic mindset will take England nowhere. Last-16 stage at best for England in Brazil.

Jonathan Middleton: England players and fans should already be having nightmares of Lewandowski and Blaszczykowski.

  3. 2210:

Des in Chessington via 81111: Michael Carrick should be playing for England. Simple. All those people that argue otherwise simply don't understand top level football or have an anti-Manchester United bias. Possession is key. Frank Lampard & Steven Gerrard have gone from playing the same attacking midfield role to the same holding midfield role. We are bang average.

  4. 2210:
    PLAYER REACTION- Ukraine 0-0 England
    Phil Jagielka

England defender Phil Jagielka: "Only time will tell if it is a good result. We would have loved to have got a win and made a big statement to the group. It is still in our hands and we have two games to go.

"I was relieved to see the referee point for a corner and not give a penalty in the first minute. He may have got there before Joe Hart but it was theatrical reaction and maybe that swayed the referee. I've seen them given, especially with 40,000 fans screaming for it and maybe it was a tiny bit of luck but we ground out the result.

"We knew it would be tough and we knew we would be under pressure."

  5. 2207:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Statisticians Opta: 2 - England have only beaten two teams in World Cup 2014 qualifying so far; Moldova and San Marino. Timid.

  6. 2206:

England still haven't beaten anyone in this group other than Moldova and San Marino, and that is exactly what they have to do now.

Win at home to Montenegro and Poland and England will be in Brazil.

  7. 2203:
    Paul Scholes

Bhaumik: The last time England looked dangerous was in Euro 2004. Bring back Scholes!!

Richard Powell: Win at home, don't lose away - Not pretty, but that's how World Cup qualification works. Knockers should stay quiet until Rio.

Russell Reynolds: All of the England midfielders were attacking minded players told to play defensively. Of course it was sloppy and unnatural.

  8. 2202:
Germany and Arsenal playmaker Mesut OzilFaroe Islands 0-3 Germany

"I had a wonderful time at the national team. Now I am looking forward to London."

Ozil scored from the spot tonight - will he make his Arsenal debut at Sunderland on Saturday?

  9. 2200:
    MANAGER REACTION- Ukraine 0-0 England
    Roy Hodgson

England manager Roy Hodgson: "It was probably a fair result. I think we had clear control of the game in the second half.

"We have lost seven players from the original squad and I think we have to be more than satisfied with the results. We gained the result without riding our luck.

"If we had had a Daniel Sturridge or Wayne Rooney available, we might have got the goal.

"It was for them to be adventurous, not us. In the first half, there were quite a few interesting situations. Perhaps we did not have quite the quality we needed to make that count.

"Had we thrown caution to the wind, we'd have come out of here with a 0-1 which would have virtually ended our hopes of topping the group."

  10. 2157:

I don't think I fared well in Roy Hodgson bingo [2136]. Full Hodgson reaction coming up...

  11. 2157:
Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar HamannUkraine 0-0 England

"Jack Wilshere would be far more effective with Michael Carrick next to him. Roy Hodgson has got to build a team. At the moment, it's a jigsaw with loads of pieces missing."

  12. 2156:
    PLAYER REACTION- Ukraine 0-0 England
    Steven Gerrard

England captain Steven Gerrard: "I don't think it was top class but defensively we were solid. Before the game the manager said we need to keep it in our hands and it gives us the final two games to win to get through.

"We have a better chance to beat our competitors at Wembley. We always knew Ukraine would push us all the way. We always knew we were going to have to do it the hard way.

"We done the job, I don't think it was top class, but the job was done.

"I don't think they will be happy with a draw. We don't focus on Ukraine now we focus on Poland and Montenegro. It's a different type of pressure but we are capable of getting the job done."

  13. 2152:

Chris Hutchinson: If I had to describe that England performance in one word, I would describe it as tepid.

Andrew Priestley: Fantastic from Scotland, England were incredibly average & horror shows from Northern Ireland, Wales & Republic of Ireland. Much improvement needed.

  14. 2152:

Here comes England captain Steven Gerrard, he looks troubled.

  15. 2150:

Paul in Thatcham via 81111: I'm tired of seeing the 'Hodgson holding his chin' shot [2144] when England are being terrible. Why is he not screaming on the touchline? No passion and no ideas.

  16. 2150:
MANAGER REACTION- Luxembourg 3-2 Northern Ireland
    Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill: "The performance was unacceptable, the energy and work rate was not at the level required.

"It's okay lifting it for Portugal and Russia but we needed that tonight. When we're down gears we're average.

"In these games when we're expected to win, we need to bring the basic ingredients to win a football match.

"We didn't manage the game well when we were on top and we didn't deserve anything from the game. Luxembourg were the better team on the night."

  17. 2144:

Italy have beaten the Czech Republic 2-1 to become the second European country in Brazil next year, joining the Netherlands.

Switzerland look like they will have to wait a little longer as Iceland are beating Albania, while France have ended their long-goal drought in style - they now lead 4-2 in Belarus.

  18. 2144:
    Roy Hodgson

John from Enfield via 81111: England should not be happy with 0-0. Ukraine were poor tonight, there's no guarantee we will beat Montenegro and Poland playing like this.

Alan in Devon via 81111: I think we can safely say that FA chairman Greg Dyke is wrong - aiming to win the World Cup by 3022 would be a tough ask if that's the best we've got. Shambles!

Adam via 81111: Can everyone please get over the idea that Michael Carrick would make England amazing. He's a decent player, but so is Frank Lampard. A manager who wasn't so painfully negative would be a help.

  19. 2142:

Jim Higginson: Everyone knows, you cannot play Lampard and Gerrard together! England always lose their shape.

  20. 2141:

England have Montenegro and Poland to come at Wembley then. Win them both and it's hello Brazil.

  21. 2141:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerUkraine 0-0 England

"Good result for England... Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina et al, you're in big trouble!"

  22. 2140:
FULL-TIME- Austria 1-0 Republic of Ireland

BBC Sport's John Haughey reports: "The Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualification hopes are surely over after David Alaba's late goal earns Austria a deserved victory in Vienna.

"Mathematically, the Irish are not yet out of it but qualification hopes have gone for Giovanni Trapattoni's side.

"The Italian's time with the Republic is surely up as well."

  23. 2138:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"England did not play for a draw, but they were always going to be reserved. Neither goalkeeper had a notable save to make.

"Ukraine offered the grater threat at times. They had more zip.

"It is an OK result, it is not brilliant as this group is so tight. England are still under great pressure."

Listen to reaction from the night's international football on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  24. 2136:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Scotland aside, not a vintage night for the home nations was it?

What do we reckon to all that then? Shall we play a bit of Roy Hodgson bingo?Definitely 'a difficult place to come' and maybe 'if you'd offered me that before the game, I would have took it.'

Outside punt on 'Gary Cahill was magnificent.'

  25. 2136:
    FULL-TIME- Wales 0-3 Serbia
  26. 2136:
    FULL-TIME- Ukraine 0-0 England

England are top of the group. Still top of the group.

  27. 2135:

Rich Leeman: Weekends without Premier League football are painful enough. This England match makes that pain even worse.

Richard Chung: Roy Hodgson has run out of ideas... He just looks stumped!

  28. 2134:
    CLOSE!- Ukraine 0-0 England

What a chance! Right at the death - a long throw-in is flicked on, Frank Lampard arrives in trademark fashion, but heads wide from eight yards. That was the moment, a real, real sitter.

  29. 2133:
Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar HamannUkraine 0-0 England

"England stuck in the dark ages. Players picked on reputation not merit."

  30. 2133:
    INJURY TIME- Ukraine 0-0 England

Into the first of three minutes of added time in Kiev.

  31. 2132:
    GREAT SAVE!- Wales 0-3 Serbia

It's not been Wales's night but Gareth Bale does go close to a goal, rifling in a dipping free-kick which is tipped over the top. He will have to join the queue to take those at Real Madrid you think...

  32. 2131:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

I bet Michael Carrick is glad he came out of the international wilderness eh?

  33. 2131:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"Tom Cleverley's arrival means England are happy with a draw. This is an OK result."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  34. 2130:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerUkraine 0-0 England

"Awful. What happens to some of these players when they pull on an England shirt?"

  35. 2129:
    SUBSTITUTION- Ukraine 0-0 England

Change for England as Theo Walcott limps off, Tom Cleverley comes on in his place. CONTAIN.

  36. 2129:
    FINAL FIVE- Ukraine 0-0 England

England are five minutes away from the point they desire...

  37. 2127:

Andy in Manchester via 81111: As a Wigan fan, delighted to see Shaun Maloney with the late winner for Scotland. What a class act. Long since lost interest in this England dross.

  38. 2127:
GOAL- Austria 1-0 Republic of Ireland - David Alaba (84 mins)

The Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualification hopes are fading fast as Bayern Munich's David Alaba hammers Austria into the lead on 86 minutes in Vienna.

  39. 2126:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"James Milner moved into the centre of midfield after the departure of Jack Wilshere. Roy Hodgson wants solidity in there for the crucial closing phases. England in sight of what would be a precious World Cup point."

  40. 2126:

Graham Reed: What has Roy Hodgson been doing in training!! My sons Under-6s team pass it better. Where is Michael Carrick when you need him!!

David Hodgson: Why is Theo Walcott still on the pitch? So so wasteful!

Daniel Thomas: My eyes keep drifting to the plain beige wallpaper next to the telly, it's more interesting. Why do we watch boring football?

  41. 2124:
    CLOSE!- Ukraine 0-0 England

England's first chance in an hour or so. Kyle Walker crosses from the right, Theo Walcott gets ahead of his marker to flick a shot on goal but it deflects right across the face of goal. Just too much of a touch on it.

    Seven minutes remain...

  43. 2123:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Rickie Lambert is looking tired out there, his touch has deserted him in the last 10 minutes. Roy Hodgson and Ray Lewington shift uneasily on their seats in the dugout.

  44. 2123:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"Going into the last 10 minutes, you always get one big chance. Can you remain composed when that chance appears?

"You hope it falls to England, and they have the whereabouts to put it into the back of the net."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  45. 2121:
Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar HamannUkraine 0-0 England

"England have got one of the few players in the holding role of world class format. Half carried United in last two seasons. Yet can't get a game."

    That's Michael Carrick, obviously...

  46. 2121:
    FULL-TIME- Macedonia 1-2 Scotland
  47. 2120:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Twelve minutes of normal time remain for England, who make no mistake about it, are dug in the trenches for a 0-0 now.

  48. 2119:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"What a let-off that was. It almost hit Artem Fedetskiy on the nose.

"He was free six-yards from goal."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  49. 2119:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerUkraine 0-0 England

"We're on the precipice here. KEEP THE BALL."

  50. 2118:

The Netherlands are the first European country to reach the World Cup finals.

A Robin van Persie double against Andorra coupled with Turkey's 2-0 win in Romania means the Dutch have qualified.

Franck Ribery equalised for France in Belarus but Timofey Kalachev has put the home side back in front, while Bosnia-Hercegovina have secured at least a play-off spot after coming from a goal down to beat Slovakia 2-1.

There is bad news for Arsenal fans from Italy where Tomas Rosicky has limped off with a thigh injury for the Czech Republic.

  51. 2117:
    CLOSE!- Ukraine 0-0 England

Big chance for Ukraine! Artem Fedetskiy evades all his markers at a corner but his header is so tame it barely reaches Joe Hart in the goal and he throws his hat on it.

  52. 2116:
GOAL- Macedonia 1-2 Scotland - Shaun Maloney (88 mins)

A peach of a goal! We saw this last season from Wigan's Shaun Maloney and he delivers the goods again, curling a beautiful free-kick up and over the wall and into the top bag.

  53. 2115:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

England are hanging on now, there's no real shape or pattern about their play any more. But they do still have pace on the break, Theo Walcott leads the charge down the left, it's three on three but his final pass is poor again.

  54. 2115:

Carl Downer: What's better? A dull 0-0 and we qualify for the World Cup or an attacking loss and we don't qualify? Think I'll take the first option.

Daniel Osunbor: As long as England continue to hype their players, they can't go far in World Cup. Why is Carrick on the bench?

Dan Atherton: 1. Why isn't Carrick playing? 2. Why is Ashley Young coming on? 3. Why is Milner starting? 4. Why are we playing for a draw?

  55. 2113:
    CLOSE!- Ukraine 0-0 England

Yevgeni Konoplienka takes the free-kick - and bends it just past the far post! Took a nick off the thigh of Phil Jagielka on its way past. Closest we've come to a goal for a long, long time.

  56. 2113:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"This is a foot outside the box. It has not been the best night for Kyle Walker, who has really struggled at times."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  57. 2111:
    YELLOW CARD- Ukraine 0-0 England

Ashley Young is straight into the swing of things, giving the ball away with both of his first two touches. Now then is this a penalty? Kyle Walker brings down his man right on the edge of the box, a free-kick is given - and Walker is booked...

  58. 2111:
GOAL- Macedonia 1-1 Scotland - Jovan Kostovski (83 mins)

What a sore one for Scotland. It's the substitute Jovan Kostovski who shows some nimble footwork in the box to collect a pass and slip the ball past Matt Gilks into the net.

  59. 2110:
    Luxembourg 3-2 Northern Ireland

Luxembourg are ranked 140th in the world - one behind Afghanistan - and tonight is their first win at home since 1972.

  60. 2110:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerUkraine 0-0 England

"When you see England pass it like they've never been introduced to each other, it does make you wonder why Michael Carrick doesn't feature."

  61. 2109:
    SUBSTITUTION- Ukraine 0-0 England

First change for England then, it's Ashley Young on in place of Jack Wilshere. Bit of a reshuffle needed in there.

  62. 2108:

    1800 k/o:

    Norway 0-2 Switzerland FT

    1930 k/o:

    Andorra 0-2 Netherlands

    1945 k/o:

    Faroe Islands 0-1 Germany

    Italy 2-1 Czech Republic

    2000 k/o:

    Belarus 1-1 France

Keep up-to-date with the latest scores from the World Cup 2014 qualifiers on the BBC Sport videprinter.

  63. 2107:
    FULL-TIME- Luxembourg 3-2 Northern Ireland

Only Luxembourg's fourth World Cup qualifier win ever!

  64. 2107:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Ashley Young is going through a huge warm-up on the touchline, it's been about 10 minutes since he started jogging up and down. There are 25 minutes left in Kiev.

  65. 2106:

Andy in Manchester via 81111: Appears as though we are rapidly descending into a 'who is the most overrated' debate. For what it is worth, my vote goes to Wilshere.

  66. 2105:
    Mario Balotelli

Italy strike twice in two minutes to lead 2-1 against the Czech Republic. Giorgio Chiellini and a Mario Balotelli penalty has turned it round in Turin and if the Azzuri can hang on, they will secure their place in Brazil.

Switzerland could join them if it remains level between Iceland and Albania. It's goalless at half-time.

  67. 2105:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"This World Cup qualifier has descended into a mediocre, scrappy affair - and while it will hardly satisfy the purists you suspect England manager Roy Hodgson would not be upset if it stayed that way. England will be happier with this."

  68. 2104:

Matt van Hessing: This is tough to watch. PNE v Oldham the other night was better.

James Elton: England are attacking with no cohesion or patience against a team who aren't particularly good at anything. Great!

  69. 2103:
    YELLOW CARD- Ukraine 0-0 England

Theo Walcott is hacked down in full flight and Oleksandr Kucher goes into the book - he'll miss the next game against Poland.

  70. 2103:
    BALE WATCH- Wales 0-3 Serbia

Gareth Bale comes on for Wales, replacing Andy King in the 58th minute to enormous cheers from the home crowd. They've had little else to cheer previous to the Real Madrid man's introduction.

  71. 2103:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"I think Jack Wilshere is getting frustrated. He has received a few tough challenges and been roughed up a bit.

"He has not had a lot of football. It seems that Ashley Young is warming up, if he comes on expect to see James Milner in the middle."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  72. 2103:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Is a draw a good result for Ukraine?

They need a win if they are to seriously consider winning the group, so let's expect a bombardment in the final half hour. They may as well go for it - surely?

  73. 2100:
GOAL- Luxembourg 3-2 Northern Ireland - Mathias Janisch (87 mins)

This really could be the winner! A scramble from a free-kick falls at the feet of Mathias Janisch and he slams home from 10 yards to spark great scenes in the home crowd.

  74. 2059:
GOAL- Wales 0-3 Serbia - Lazar Markovic (55 mins)

Lazar Markovic makes it 3-0 after Boaz Myhill appears to have a one-man battle with the Serbian attack.

  75. 2058:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

James Milner motors clear down the left for the first time all evening but eh cant find a killer pass, it then breaks down in midfield. England look like a team happy with a 0-0 to me.

  76. 2057:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"It has been tough for Rickie Lambert so far, through no fault of his own. Every time the ball has been played up to him, he has had to fight for it."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  77. 2057:

Antony Walker: Can't help thinking Gabriel Agbonlahor would have torn this Ukraine team to pieces.

  78. 2055:
GOAL- Luxembourg 2-2 Northern Ireland - Gareth McAuley (82 mins)

Luxembourg were on course for only their fourth ever World Cup qualifier win but goal machine Gareth McAuley - who netted against Portugal on Friday - heads in an equaliser.

  79. 2054:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Statisticians Opta: 47% - England have had just 47% possession so far v Ukraine. They've not had less than 55% in any other game in this campaign. Pegged.

  80. 2054:

Jim Harrison: Can't they bring Beckham on?

  81. 2053:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Ashley Cole has to be switched on to make a very good clearance at the back post, before Rickie Lambert has a bad touch on the halfway line and clatters Artem Fedetskiy on his follow through. He's a bit lucky not to be booked there.

  82. 2051:
GOAL- Luxembourg 2-1 Northern Ireland - Stefano Bensi (78 mins)

Too easy, it's far too easy for Luxembourg as Stefano Bensi runs unchallenged from the centre circle before firing in from 25 yards, skidding one in to the far corner. Dear oh dear...

  83. 2049:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

There were no changes at the break by the way, and it's the hosts who start the half on top.

  84. 2049:

Chris from Bolton via 81111: Defence: average. Midfield: average. Attack: average. Overall: guess what? Average.

  85. 2048:
    KICK-OFF- Ukraine 0-0 England

And we are back under way in Kiev.

  86. 2046:
GOAL- Macedonia 0-1 Scotland - Ikechi Anya (59 mins)

He couldn't keep Northampton in League One a few years ago, but Watford wing-back Ikechi Anya has now scored for Scotland! A great finish too, running clear to fire in with his left foot.

  87. 2046:
    Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

There are 18 minutes left for Northern Ireland to find a winner...

  88. 2044:

Jason Grindley: Uninspiring, lacklustre, bereft of quality & utterly infuriating... Becoming the norm for watching England.

Lewis Lloyd: Wilshere may be our most technically gifted player, but he can't keep hold of the ball at all and gets pushed off it too easily.

James Smales: If the England football team were a fruit they'd be a dragon fruit. Looks expensive, but very boring. And not great at football.

  89. 2043:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerUkraine 0-0 England

"England tactically comfortable, but the passing in the first half of this game has been woeful... By both teams."

  90. 2041:
TIME FOR A CHANGE?- Ukraine 0-0 England

Lots of criticism coming in about the state of the England midfield tonight but who would you like to see in there? Roy Hodgson has Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Ross Barkley, Ashley Young, Raheem Sterling and Andros Townsend available on the bench...

  91. 2040:

There you go everyone - it could be worse, you could be France fans. Talk about a goal drought...

  92. 2039:

France have gone more than 500 minutes without a goal and it has just got worse as Egor Filipenko has just put Belarus ahead against them.

The Netherlands look like they will win the race to be the first European country to qualify for Brazil after Manchester United's Robin van Persie put them 2-0 ahead in Andorra with a quick-fire brace.

    Van Persie
  93. 2036:

STONEY: Why can't they pass the ball in front of the player making the run? All the time they have to check and it kills the move.

William Holden: Walcott has mis-controlled and misplaced more times than he's controlled and passed... His pace is useless in this form.

Observant Critic: I hope Jermain Defoe becomes a feature at some point in this game. He can complement Rickie Lambert better and add potency to England's attack.

  94. 2036:
    HALF-TIME- Wales 0-2 Serbia

BBC Sport's Richard Williams reports: "A disastrous opening 45 minutes for Chris Coleman's Wales team as Serbia press home their superiority with two goals - one soft, one sensational. Coleman's experimental defence look disjointed and vulnerable against an attack whose size and speed posed problems throughout. At the other end Wales have rarely troubled Vladimir Stojkovic in the Serb goal. Will we see Gareth Bale in the second half?"

  95. 2035:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"We always knew it was going to be tight. It has been frantic at times, without many clear cut chances.

"England have played pretty well after surviving the onslaught in the first 10 minutes. Rickie Lambert has been isolated, but Ashley Cole and James Milner are linking up well on the left-hand side."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  96. 2032:
    KICK-OFF- Macedonia 0-0 Scotland

The second half is under away in Skopje, where Gordon Strachan has made an unusual half-time change, swapping goalkeepers. Matt Gilks is now between the sticks.

  97. 2032:

Elliot Bransby in Leeds via 81111: Ukraine and England look poor and whoever goes to Brazil will struggle.

Ian via 81111: What does Jack Wilshere bring to England? Incredibly overhyped. Doesn't score, gives the ball away, made of glass.

Ajay from London via 81111: Two very average international teams playing tonight in Ukraine. The quality of football shows.

  98. 2032:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievFIRST HALF ANALYSIS- Ukraine 0-0 England

"England looked more composed as the half went on after those early nerves but still need to get more of a grip on midfield. Jack Wilshere has been a real disappointment, brushed off the ball and losing possession too easily. Manager Roy Hodgson will regard the half as a qualified success - but England must pose more of an attacking threat."

  99. 2031:

Bosnia-Hercegovina looked to be heading for their first ever World Cup appearance until this week. They lost 1-0 at home to Slovakia on Friday and they are losing by the same score in the return fixture tonight and will drop below Greece, who are currently drawing 0-0 with Latvia.

Sweden's win in Kazakhstan means Germany cannot qualify tonight but they lead 1-0 in the Faroe Islands thanks to a tap-in from Arsenal's Per Mertesacker.

  100. 2031:
    HALF-TIME- Ukraine 0-0 England
  101. 2031:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Frank Lampard steps up and makes a solid connection, but it hits the wall and spins away for a corner. Calls for handball dismissed by referee Pedro Proenca.

  102. 2029:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Jack Wilshere takes a kicking yet again - he has had some treatment in the last few days - and it's a free-kick in a good spot for Frank Lampard...

  103. 2029:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"When England have had the ball in the final-third, their passes have been over-hit.

"That has made it impossible for players to take the ball and control it."

  104. 2028:

Rachel T: Wilshere is running around like a tattooed chicken.

Gav01: Can't string two passes together at the moment. England's midfield is crying out for someone like Michael Carrick.

Samuel Lau~12laus: People saying Milner's giving the ball away... Not as much as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Jack Wilshere are.

  105. 2027:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Steven Gerrard tries to find Kyle Walker on the overlap but his pass is poor and the livewire Yevgeni Konoplienka can run at the England defence. He does just that, dinking in a pass to find Roman Zozulya, who is in prime position to get a shot off but his touch lets him down at the vital minute. Good opening for the hosts though.

  106. 2027:
GOAL- Wales 0-2 Serbia - Aleksandar Kolarov (38 mins)

Manchester City's Aleksander Kolorov fires a left-footed drive from 25 yards into the top corner past a helpless Boaz Myhill. Sensational goal.

  107. 2024:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"I cannot see this game being decided by a glorious goal. It will be decided by a mistake, and that is why concentration is so important."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  108. 2024:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Question marks over a number 10 for England who looks unfit and can't keep the ball? Anyone heard that one before?

The pace has really died now, that end-to-end opening is but a memory as we approach the break.

  109. 2021:

Andy in Manchester via 81111: Takes the edge off the 'hostile atmosphere' when you see a Mexican wave going around the ground!

Ollie in Sheffield via 81111: Enjoying how open the opening half hour has been in England game. Not your typical cagey boring qualifier at all!

  110. 2020:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Jack Wilshere then gets clobbered by a swinging arm as he wins a header, but he shakes it off. Ross Barkley warms up on the sidelines, who is an even younger option in that midfield should Roy Hodgson need him.

  111. 2020:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"It is a bit more positive from England. They still have to pose a bit more of an attacking threat, for me.

"Jack Wilshere has had a couple of decent passes, but he does not possess his usual burst of pace at the moment. He is struggling, and has been barged off the ball a few times.

    "Is he match fit?"

  112. 2020:
    KICK-OFF- Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland

Back under way in Luxembourg. Can Northern Ireland regain the lead?

  113. 2020:
    CLOSE!- Ukraine 0-0 England

Theo Walcott and Kyle Walker mount a swift counter-attack for England after some good soaking up. Walcott runs into a cul-de-sac but manages to reverse out, the ball popping out to James Milner on the left. Frustratingly, if predictably, he cuts back in on to his right foot but then finds Steven Gerrard 30 yards from goal.

The England captain takes one touch before releasing a side-footer which lands on the roof of the net. Good effort as we enter the final 10 minutes of the first half.

  114. 2019:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"England were braced for the early surge from Ukraine that has become their trademark - and which they experienced in Donetsk in Euro 2012. The use of pace and width is impressive but Ukraine ran out of gas when losing at home to England in that tournament. Coach Roy Hodgson will hope for something similar here."

  115. 2017:
Former England captain Rio FerdinandUkraine 0-0 England

"The Ukraine no.10 is one lively little customer!"

  116. 2016:
    HALF-TIME- Macedonia 0-0 Scotland

Goalless at the break in Skopje - remember you can follow that one in a separate live text commentary.

  117. 2015:

Alessandro Della Valle scores San Marino's first goal of the World Cup qualifiers to equalise against Poland in England's group. Unfortunately, the Poles made it 2-1 two minutes later through Jakub Blaszczykowski.

But still, A GOAL FOR SAN MARINO!

  119. 2014:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

I may just save that tweet from Sam for future use. England have needed to get the ball down and play since Euro 96.

We are at the half-hour mark though and the tempo of the game has just started to drop off, which is probably music to Roy Hodgson's ears.

  120. 2012:

Sam Cross: England need to get the ball down and play. Looking intimidated by the occasion at the moment.

Dan Gleebits: Count the number of times James Milner gives the ball away. Must be in double figures already.

RGunnerSuarez: Finding the criticism of Kyle Walker rather amusing. Glen Johnson fared no better against Yevgeni Konoplienka at Wembley.

  121. 2011:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Midway through the first half then and it's starting to feel quite tense to me. England have had a few bright moments in attack but have looked a mess at times in defence. Rickie Lambert continues to impress in an England shirt though, he's held the ball up well and linked up play nicely. Ooh, and as I say that he almost threads in James Milner bursting into the box but it's overhit.

  122. 2009:
    BALE WATCH- Wales 0-1 Serbia

Gareth Bale warming up at the Cardiff City Stadium gets the sparse crowd excited briefly as they strike up a chorus of "we want Bale on". But there is no sign of him coming on this early.

  123. 2009:

Turkey lead 1-0 in Romania meaning the Netherlands could be the first team to qualify for Brazil. However, the Dutch are surprisingly being held in Andorra.

Italy could also qualify tonight but they are trailing at home to the Czech Republic thanks to a goal from Aston Villa's Libor Kozak.

Earlier, Switzerland beat Norway in Oslo in Group E. Now all eyes are on Iceland where a draw between the hosts and Albania would see the Swiss qualify.

  124. 2007:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

England's midfield trio of Jack Wilshere, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are being given the runaround at the minute, Gerrard is nominally the deepest of the three while Wilshere has lost the ball when dribbling on a few occasions.

  125. 2005:

Mark in Haydock via 81111: Joe Hart looks like a man walking on eggshells...

Lisa via 81111: Can't believe I am missing Glen Johnson as right-back for England!

Aqeel in Blackburn via 81111: Joe Hart is looking like a man under pressure. Rest assured a blooper is on its way.

  126. 2005:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"When Ukraine break, they break in numbers. The full-backs bomb on past wingers Yevgeni Konoplienka and Andriy Yarmolenko.

"England are being a bit more reserved. Five or six players go forward for Ukraine, which means there is space for England on the counter-attack."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  127. 2003:
GOAL- Luxembourg 1-1 Northern Ireland - Aurelien Joachim (45 mins)

Heartache for Northern Ireland as Aurelien Joachim - no relation to Julian, I presume - fires in a shot which deflects up and over Roy Carroll and in.

  128. 2002:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Steven Gerrard whips in a testing free-kick from deep which Phil Jagielka almost gets on to, before goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov comes to claim the following corner. This is being played at Premier League tempo, it's a much more entertaining affair than I was expecting...

  129. 2001:

Inter Millands: Is Kyle Walker really the best England have for right back???

Simon Bidwell: England are lucky Gary Cahill is on form right now because the rest of the defence must be half asleep given this display.

Djethro Colmer: Cahill already putting in a shift.

  130. 2001:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Communication breakdowns everywhere in that back four, and James Milner not doing much to strengthen his argument as a hard-working winger so far. But England need to weather this storm and get forward as they have looked dangerous themselves.

"There has been a few communication breakdowns between James Milner and Ashley Cole. Sometimes, when you track someone so far, you have to eventually pass him over to the full-back.

"Gary Cahill has started extremely well, and has made two fantastic clearances. He does not want to lose this game.

"England need to take a breath, and relax a bit. It is a bit panicky at the moment when Ukraine come forward."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  133. 1959:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"Sticky start for England defender Kyle Walker. Yevgeni Konoplienka is already giving him a torrid time. Ukraine look to have targeted Walker as a source of weakness - and the early stages suggest they have the sort of player with the gifts to exploit it."

  134. 1958:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerUkraine 0-0 England

"Theo Walcott has enjoyed a blistering start to the season. Glad Roy resisted urge to play him centrally. Not his position."

  135. 1957:
    CLOSE!- Ukraine 0-0 England

The opening goal may not be too far away in Kiev, both sets of defenders look edgy. Twice right-back Artem Fedetskiy gets in behind the left-wing axis of Ashley Cole and James Milner but on both occasions he can't quite make a meaningful connection. The home crowd are making a terrific din.

  136. 1956:
GOAL- Wales 0-1 Serbia - Filip Djordjevic (9 mins)

Filip Djordjevic heads Serbia ahead from close range after Boaz Myhill parries a header from Lazar Markovic. Awful start for the hosts.

  137. 1955:

There may not be many watching, but it's been a cracking opening for the neutral...

  138. 1954:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

"Both teams are working incredibly hard, the pace is fast and furious.

"Kyle Walker got skinned by Yevgeni Konoplienka. The referee ended up giving a free-kick, but it was uncomfortable for Joe Hart."

Listen to commentary of Ukraine v England on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  139. 1952:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Joe Hart's sticky start continues. Oleg Gusev gambles on a crossfield pass and gets in behind Kyle Walker, Hart and Gary Cahill dither and almost get in each other's way, there's a half-hearted clearance and Hart then juggles with the loose ball like an England slip fielder in the 1990s. All over the shop.

  140. 1950:
    Ukraine 0-0 England

Ukraine look all at sea from crosses as Gary Cahill twice wins free headers, the second one is flying toward the corner until Artem Fedetskiy hacks it into Row L. Goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov then comes to make a flying punch clear and the hosts survive.

England looking dangerous early doors though.

  141. 1950:

Gwalch Mon: Stonewall penalty!!! Red would've been harsh, but understandable!!! All set up for Joe Hart to have a stormer now!! Lucky.

  142. 1949:
    CLOSE!- Ukraine 0-0 England

This was supposed to a cagey, sterile affair wasn't it? A lovely touch from Rickie Lambert sets Theo Walcott away on his bike, he cuts in on to his left foot and forces a save from Andriy Pyatov, who takes a boot in the face. He's able to continue though. Great opening.

  143. 1948:
Former England defender Danny Mills in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine 0-0 England

  144. 1948:

Kath may have identified a serious flaw in England's approach there. Get the FA on the phone.

Some horrendous singing from Joe Hart but let's hope that's his biggest error of the night. The PA announcer whips the home crowd into a frenzy for the Ukraine anthem and somewhere, Andriy Shevchenko puts down his nine iron...

  154. 1939:

England boss Roy Hodgson on whether he would take a draw: "It depends on how the game pans out. We'd like to think we can win but if they play as well as they can, they can win it too. The emphasis is that we know what we need to do, and the players need to brave enough and determined enough to go out a trust each other."

  163. 1932:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine v England (1945 BST)

"England striker Rickie Lambert is clearly a man of mystery to Ukraine. As the mugshots of England's players flashed up on the big screens during the team announcement Lambert's was the only missing face. Simply an image of an England shirt - Roy Hodgson's secret weapon."

  164. 1930:
GOAL- Luxembourg 0-1 Northern Ireland - Martin Paterson (14 mins)

I was just about to say that Northern Ireland had made heavy weather of their opening 10 minutes in Luxembourg, when they go ahead with their first real attack. Shane Ferguson plays the ball up to Huddersfield striker Martin Paterson, his first touch is superb to switch the ball on to his left foot and he batters the ball home from the edge of the area.

England may be top of their group - but they have only actually beaten San Marino and Moldova so far. It's been draws all the way against the other sides in the group and that could be decisive. Can they find a way to win tonight?

  174. 1920:

France striker Karim Benzema is dropped to the bench after 1217 minutes without a goal and is replaced by Arsenal's Olivier Giroud in their game against Belarus. Les Bleus need to beat Group I's whipping boys by more than four goals to leapfrog Spain to the top of the group.

    Gary Neville & Roy Hodgson

"England manager Roy Hodgson is in very close proximity to his players as they go through their warm-up. It was clear in his pre-match media briefing he has great trust in his side - now can they repay it?

"This is their toughest World Cup qualifier by some distance and there is every indication they will have to get this crucial result in a very hostile environment in Kiev's Olympic Stadium. At the end of tonight England's task in their remaining games will be brought into sharp focus.

"And if England have their brass band, Ukraine have a drummer. And he will present some very fierce competition. He bangs a very large drum."

"My concern for England is that they look vulnerable, they have only kept clean sheets against the lesser sides. Goalkeeper Joe Hart needs a big performance, like the one he pulled out for Manchester City against Borussia Dortmund last season."

Listen to the build-up to the night's international action on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  181. 1916:
    Ukraine v England (1945 BST)

Ukraine spring a surprise by naming captain - ex Bayern Munich midfielder - Anatoliy Tymoschuk on the substitutes' bench.

  182. 1914:
    Wales v Serbia (1945 BST)

Former Wales captain Kevin Ratcliffe on BBC Radio Wales: "It's a massive gamble having Ben Davies in the centre of defence when he hasn't played there for his club, Swansea. It's a huge gamble and one that can backfire on Chris Coleman. But it's great to see Sam Vokes playing because I feel we need a focal point up front."

  183. 1912:
    WHERE'S SHEVA?- Ukraine v England (1945 BST)
    Andriy Shevchenko

You can't really mention Ukraine without thinking of their talisman Andriy Shevchenko, but there is no chance of the former Chelsea man popping up this evening.

He's more into chipping and driving these days.

Now retired, the 36-year-old makes his European Challenge Tour debut at this week's Kharkov Superior Cup - that's golf by the way.

  184. 1912:

Kenny Jarvis: If there was ever a time and place to play Milner, it's tonight. C'mon England!

Chris Ballett: France have Ribery, Spain have Pedro, even Wales (usually) have Bale. England have Milner. Enough said.

  185. 1911:

Titus via 81111: Does Wales manager Chris Coleman really think that Gareth Bale is going to regain match-fitness by sitting on the bench?

  186. 1911:
Austria v Republic of Ireland (1945 BST)

Anthony Pilkington is handed a first Republic of Ireland start as Giovanni Trapattoni attempts to revive his hopes of a trip to the World Cup finals in Brazil.

The Norwich midfielder, who won his first senior cap as a substitute in Friday's 2-1 home defeat by Sweden, lines up on the left side of midfield in place of James McClean, with Paul Green was drafted into the middle for the injured Glenn Whelan.

Austria boss Marcel Koller makes three changes to the side which lost 3-0 in Germany on Friday with Sebastian Prodl, Julian Baumgartlinger and Guido Burgstaller taking over from Emanuel Pogatetz, Andreas Ivanschitz and new Stoke signing Marko Arnautovic.

  187. 1910:
Austria v Republic of Ireland (1945 BST)

Sweden's 1-0 win in Kazakhstan is bad news for the Republic of Ireland ahead of their must-win clash with Austria in Vienna.

The Swedes now move six points ahead of Giovanni Trapattoni's side.

The Republic's already slim hopes of getting back into contention for a probable play-off spot in Group C have been reduced still further.

  188. 1909:
    LINE-UPS- Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (1915 BST)

Luxembourg: Joubert, Laterza, Mutsch, Philipps, Janisch, Krogh Gerson, Jans, Bensi, Da Mota Alves, Turpel, Joachim. Subs: Oberweis, Delgado, Bastos, Bukvic, Hoffmann, Luisi, Malget, Peters.

Northern Ireland: Carroll, Hodson, McAuley, Danny Lafferty, Jonny Evans, Ferguson, McGinn, Davis, Norwood, Paterson, Ward. Subs: McGovern, Baird, Shiels, Corry Evans, McArdle, Grigg, Bruce, Magennis, McKay, O'Connor, McKeown, Devlin.

    Referee: Robert Malek (Poland)

  189. 1907:
VIEW FROM THE OPPOSITION- Ukraine v England (1945 BST)

Ukraine national coach Mykhaylo Fomenko has described tonight's World Cup qualifier against England as the "match of his life" during a pre-match press conference in Kiev.

Fomenko also said that he was worried about upsetting the home support. "I am afraid of making our fans and football lovers mad by the result of the England match," he said.

Midfielder Yevgeni Konoplianka has described England as a "strong team," adding that Ukraine "were determined to seek a draw at the very least, but ideally we need a victory."

  190. 1906:
    Gabriel Agbonlahor

Ewan in Buntingford via 81111: I can't understand how Gabriel Agbonlahor hasn't been called up, he's been on fire recently.

  191. 1905:
Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (1915 BST)

Kick-off is just 10 minutes away for Northern Ireland, with manager Michael O'Neill saying that the pitch is fantastic, he is looking for an energetic performance and lots of 'common sense.'

  192. 1904:
Austria v Republic of Ireland (1945 BST)

Giovanni Trapattoni has admitted his time is almost up as Republic of Ireland manager. The Italian has been at the helm since 2008 and led Ireland to Euro 2012, but as his contract finishes at the end of this campaign which is likely to be unsuccessful, the FAI are likely to bring in a new face.

Germany are the runaway leaders of Group C and Ireland trail second-placed Sweden by six points in the race for the play-offs. However, with a tough run-in starting away at Austria tonight, it is unlikely the Irish will be partying in Brazil next year.

  193. 1903:

Andrew Priestley: Hopefully Northern Ireland can carry some momentum into the Euro qualifiers next year. We're playing some good football under Michael O'Neill.

  194. 1902:
    Wales v Serbia (1945 BST)

Chris Coleman makes five changes from the Wales team beaten by Macedonia. Ashley Williams is suspended, Jonathan Williams has a groin strain and Sam Ricketts aggravated a knee injury in Skopje.

Andy King, Sam Vokes and Andrew Crofts come into the team with David Vaughan and Jack Collison dropping to the bench.

Ben Davies moves from left back to central defence alongside Danny Gabbidon who makes his first appearance since the 1-0 defeat against Costa Rica in February 2012, with Adam Matthews coming in at left-back.

Aaron Ramsey captains the team and Gareth Bale is on the bench.

  195. 1900:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Wales v Serbia (1945 BST)

Confirmation that Gareth Bale does not start for Wales.

  196. 1859:

Matt in Telford via 81111: Wow. Steve Guppy! There's a blast from the past! He was a fish out of water at international level.

  197. 1858:
    Wales v Serbia (1945 BST)

All eyes will be on Gareth Bale tonight even though the world's most expensive player is only set to be on the bench for Wales as he recovers from a hamstring problem.

Chris Coleman may not have Real Madrid's star at his disposal from the off - and World Cup qualification may be beyond them - but he will still be hoping Wales can pick up a win against Serbia to take them away from the bottom of Group A.

  198. 1857:

Jamie in Wembley via 81111: What is England boss Roy Hodgson saying about his team that he feels the need to play a defensive winger? How about picking a team that will cause the opposition problems instead of fixing all your attention on containing them? Milner hasn't been getting games at Manchester City whereas Andros Townsend has been on great form this season and deserves a start.

Liam in Stockport via 81111: Re 18.33 - James Milner is an outstanding player, there is a lot more about him than people think. Don't think Gabriel Agbonlahor would get in to Manchester City's squad!

  199. 1856:
    Macedonia v Scotland (1930 BST)

Gordon Strachan may still be settling in to life as Scotland boss but beating minnows Macedonia away could help them avoid finishing bottom of Group A and avoiding the indignity that will go with that heading into next year's Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Victory lifts them above their opponents tonight, but Macedonia away is never an easy trip.

  200. 1853:
Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (1915 BST)

Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifying hopes may be long gone but boss Michael O'Neill will be hoping for no embarrassment tonight in Luxembourg fresh off the back of being bedazzled by Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal on Friday night.

O'Neill's side were held by the European minnows at Windsor Park earlier in the campaign and defeat tonight could leave them in danger of finishing bottom of Group F.

  201. 1853:
MOTD presenter Gary LinekerUkraine v England (1945 BST)

"Always comforting to read James Milner's name on the team sheet."

At least Gary's a fan, James...

  202. 1851:
    BBC Radio 5 live

Mark Pougatch is presenting live from the Olympic Stadium in Kiev at 1900 BST, as he brings you the build-up to the evening's international games.

At 1945 BST, former Leeds defender Danny Mills, Ian Dennis and Mike Ingham are the men behind the microphones for live commentary of England's tough trip to Ukraine.

You will also hear updates from Northern Ireland's visit to Luxembourg, Scotland's match in Macedonia and Wales's clash with Serbia at Cardiff City Stadium.

  203. 1850:

Someone tell James Milner to get his phone out and have a read. He will either be inspired or terrified by this reaction to his selection. There's no denying he works very hard, but is that enough at this level?

  204. 1847:

James Fenn: Cue in the inevitable Milner hate. We all want exciting wingers. But tonight in Ukraine I just want effectiveness and 3 points.

Louis Dougherty: Why do I keep seeing James Milner described as reliable? He is an average player at best who doesn't play regular first team football.

James Hunt: Milner gets way too much stick I think... Right sort of player for this game. Not flashy but gets the job done.

  205. 1847:
    Paulo Wanchope

In North America, Costa Rica and the United States could both qualify tonight if results go their way.

Costa Rica - under the watchful gaze of assistant coach Paulo Wanchope - will be through to Brazil if they beat Jamaica and Mexico fail to defeat the US.

The US will be through if they beat Mexico and Panama drop points to Honduras.

  206. 1842:
    Mario Balotelli

As England continue their battle for a World Cup 2014 place, Italy, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland could all guarantee qualification tonight.

Italy are the only side whose destiny is in their own hands, as they can secure top spot in Group B by beating Czech Republic or matching Bulgaria's result in Malta. Germany must defeat bottom-placed Faroe Islands and hope Sweden drop points against Kazakhstan to top Group C with two games left.

Netherlands need to beat Andorra and see Romania lose to Turkey in Group D. The Dutch have a superior goal difference of 15 over Romania so even if both sides win, Louis van Gaal's side will be all but through. For Switzerland to make the plane to Brazil, they would need to beat second-placed Norway, and hope Iceland and Albania draw their Group E game.

  207. 1839:
SCOTLAND LATEST- Macedonia v Scotland (1930 BST)

Barry Bannan, Ikechi Anya and Steven Naismith all start for Scotland tonight, and you can follow that match in great detail in a separate, bespoke, Scottish live text commentary.

  208. 1838:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine v England (1945 BST)

"Ukraine's players are out early for a look at the surface and surroundings at Kiev's Olympic Stadium - which is largely deserted but is resounding to loud rock music to build the mood.

"There is a real taste of the atmosphere to come around the arena with thousands of Ukraine fans gathered in the streets outside and a very visible security presence."

  209. 1838:
Manchester City captain Vincent KompanyUkraine v England (1945 BST)

"Ukraine v England tonight! Should be a good game."

  210. 1836:
    Gary Neville & Roy Hodgson

KyleBenjaminWinfield: England to win 2-1 but its all about how well England contain Yarmolenko and Konoplyanka, they are Ukraine's key men.

Russell Reynolds: So Milner starts. I guess we have to try to catch them on a break down the other side then or wait until we get quality subs on.

Daniel Whale: If Milner's playing I'm not watching, can you replace him please because I was looking forward to it. Thanks.

  211. 1833:
TON UP FOR LAMPS- Ukraine v England (1945 BST)
    Frank Lampard

Unless you've been sleeping rough, working in an underground bunker or perhaps camping in the Scottish Highlands for the past few days you will no doubt know that Frank Lampard wins his 100th cap for England tonight.

The Chelsea midfielder - who has scored more penalties for his country than anyone else - joins the list of centurions 14 years after his debut at the Stadium of Light.

To put into context how long Lampard has been around, he was replaced in that win over Belgium by Dennis Wise, with some of the other players on display that day Tony Adams, Paul Ince and Nigel Martyn, with Kieron Dyer and Steve Guppy as wing-backs...

    Steve Guppy
  212. 1833:

Joe via 81111: Why Milner? He'd look average playing in the Championship. It's embarrassing having him representing our country.

    Ukraine v England (1945 BST)

England team: Joe Hart; Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Ashley Cole; James Milner, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott; Rickie Lambert

  214. 1831:
BBC Radio 5 live presenter Mark Pougatch in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine v England (1945 BST)

"Ukraine players out early. Yellow & blue colours - yellow for fields of wheat & blue for the sky."

  215. 1830:

BBC Monitoring reports: England's visit to Kiev has, unsurprisingly, drummed up plenty of interest in football-mad Ukraine.

Government-owned Uryadovyy Kuryer daily put the football story on its coloured front page with the headline "Jumping the English hurdle". "The record drubbing of San-Marino has added courage to our footballers on the eve of the main duel of the year", the paper said.

Parliament-owned Holos Ukrayiny said in its headline: "The record was set - well done! It's more serious today..." "Ukraine's team, which was written off after the first three qualifiers, has revived like a Phoenix under its new coach Mykhaylo Fomenko".

Komsomolskaya Pravda v Ukrayine daily tabloid put up a headline: "Ukraine vs. England: to tame "Three Lions".

Ukrayina Moloda daily says "The stand is the key factor" in its headline, expressing fear that ticket touts, who bought up tickets before the match, may leave the national team without support".

A commentary on website says: "Many will say that the strength of the England team is exaggerated. It's true, most English clubs rely on imported players, and the British school of football cannot boast anything like the sort of harvest the Netherlands, France or Germany produce every year. But a team that everyone overestimates couldn't possibly reach the play-offs in virtually all tournaments and achieve results there."

  216. 1828:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine v England (1945 BST)

"No surprises in England's team to face Ukraine. Manager Roy Hodgson said there would only be one change, a replacement for suspended Danny Welbeck, and as expected he has gone for the reliability and stability of James Milner."

  217. 1828:

Toby in Kent: This has got a similar feel to a certain lonely night out in Croatia, another Walcott hat-trick tonight? Wouldn't that be lovely...

Ranvir, Birmingham: Got sneaky feeling we will beat Ukraine. 1-0 Walcott

  218. 1826:
    Ukraine v England (1945 BST)
    Rickie Lambert

A big night for big Rickie then - and Roy Hodgson was almost full of praise for the Southampton man last night. Almost...

He said: "Who knows? He [Lambert] might surprise us and add a third goal to the fairytale but if he doesn't I still think he's going to be a player going forward that England will get some use out of."

Hopefully Rickie and the boys can be some use tonight...

  219. 1824:
    Wayne Rooney

    Wayne Rooney - out.

    Daniel Sturridge - out.

    Danny Welbeck - out.

    Andy Carroll - out.

Gabriel Agbonlahor, Peter Crouch, Darren Bent, Fraizer Campbell, Kevin Phillips, any other English striker you can think of playing in the top flight - not selected.

All these striker problems have left England with just Southampton's Rickie Lambert and Tottenham's Jermain Defoe available tonight. Lambert starts, and with two goals from two caps so far he is the man in form...

  220. 1823:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Ukraine v England (1945 BST)

As expected, James Milner starts for England in the only change from the 4-0 win over Moldova on Friday night. Suspended Danny Welbeck misses out.

  221. 1822:
    Ukraine v England (1945 BST)

Statisticians Opta: 7 - Ukraine have won seven and lost none of their last eight internationals, conceding just two goals in total in this run. Tough.

  222. 1820:

So how tricky is tonight's match likely to be for England?

Well, if the last two clashes with Ukraine are anything to go by, don't expect a goalfest. The two sides met in last year's Euro 2012 finals, when a solitary header from Wayne Rooney was enough for England to win and make it through the group stages.

Ukraine were harshly done by though, when Marko Devic's shot clearly crossed the line before it was scrambled away by John Terry, only for the officials to remain unmoved.

And the sides met at Wembley 364 days ago, when England were again a tad fortunate, Frank Lampard burying a late penalty to earn a 1-1 draw.

  223. 1817:
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty in Olympic Stadium, KievUkraine v England (1945 BST)
    Olympic Stadium

"The view from here. The Olympic Stadium Kiev. Calm."

  224. 1815:

Glenn on text via 81111: England need to be at their best this evening as Ukraine will be out for revenge after the dubious disallowed goal decision in Euro 2012. Having said that we need to be positive in attack or we will just emulate previous England teams who just didn't go for it when the chance was there.

Steve in Belfast: HUGE end to the campaign for NI, If we win our next 2 'easy' games and Israel lose to Russia and Portugal, it would set up an amazing third-place showdown in Tel Aviv in October. Green and white army!

  225. 1815:
    Scott Carson

There could be a few nervous moments for England fans later on as they edge towards qualification or failure in Ukraine.

Will there be a Gary Lineker in Poland moment, circa 1991? A late, saviour of a goal? Or a Scott Carson moment - a howler of an error to blow any chance of progress?

Or will it be a walk in the park?

Away from England, who is the right man to replace Giovanni Trapattoni as Republic of Ireland boss? Can they possibly still make the play-offs?

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland fans - what do you make of your campaigns and what are your hopes for the future?

Fire away. You can text in on 81111 (UK Only) - put your names on there - and tweet us at #BBCFootball.

  226. 1809:

Our focus will be on England's testing trip tonight, but there are plenty of other games going on. We'll bring you all the goals and key incidents, but here's the rundown of the fixtures:

Luxembourg v Northern Ireland (1915 BST)

    Macedonia v Scotland (1930 BST)

    Ukraine v England (1945 BST)

    Wales v Serbia (1945 BST)

Austria v Republic of Ireland (1945 BST)

  227. 1806:

With only the top team in each group guaranteed a place at next summer's jamboree, England are desperate to keep hold of that top spot in Group H.

Roy Hodgson's men have 15 points from their seven games, with Montenegro level on points but with a worse goal difference having played eight games.

Ukraine have 14 points after seven games, with Poland all but out of the running on 10 points.

Should Ukraine get a win tonight, it would leave them two points clear of England with games against Poland at home and San Marino away to come.

Which would make them big favourites to top the group in my book.

  228. 1800:
    Roy Hodgson

Played seven, top of the group, conceded only three goals and scored 25?

All should be rosy in the England camp - but Roy Hodgson's side are a long way from booking their hotel rooms in Brazil just yet.

Too many draws have been costly in the race for qualification from Group H, leaving tonight's trip to Kiev as crucial.

In fact, another draw tonight would probably do the job for England, but lose to Ukraine and it may be a place in the play-offs at best.

    Can England deliver?
