    Italian Serie AITALIAN UPDATE

Serie A is often seen as defensive and boring... just the 42 goals this weekend in Italy's top flight. Robinho and Mario Balotelli scored as AC Milan beat Cagliari 4-1, while Alberto Aquilani scored the opener and Giuseppe Rossi and Mario Gomez added braces as Fiorentina beat Genoa 5-2.

    Sunday's Serie A results

    AC Milan 3-1 Cagliari

    Atalanta 2-0 Torino

    Bologna 2-2 Sampdoria

    Catania 0-3 Inter Milan

    Genoa 2-5 Fiorentina

    Sassuolo 1-4 Livorno

    Roma 3-0 Verona

    Udinese 3-1 Parma

  3. 2159:
    Spanish La LigaSPANISH UPDATE
    David Villa

Barcelona go top of La Liga after holding on to a 3-2 win against Valencia.

No goals came after the break, following a crazy end to the first-half which saw Lionel Messi complete his hat-trick and Helder Postiga strike an impressive brace for the hosts.

Elsewhere, goals from David Villa and Koke helped Atletico Madrid see off fellow Champions League qualifiers Real Sociedad by 2-1, Espanyol played out a scoreless draw with Real Betis, and Sevilla and Malaga shared four goals in an entertaining stalemate at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

  4. 2155:
French Ligue 1FULL-TIME- Marseille 1-2 Monaco
    Emmanuel Riviere

Monaco show their title credentials with a 2-1 comeback victory in the Cote d'Azur derby. Their £51m striker Radamel Falcao scored their equaliser but it was his replacement, Emmanuel Riviere, who decided the game to keep Monaco unbeaten and end Marseille's 100% run.

  5. 2152:
    FULL-TIME- Valencia 2-3 Barcelona
  6. 2148:
    Spanish La LigaValencia 2-3 Barcelona

Lionel Messi cannot force in his fourth goal. Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves makes a double save, as he repels Jordi Alba's bobbling close-range effort's before instantly springing to his feet to block the Argentine's powerful follow-up.

  7. 2145:
Spanish La LigaHITS THE WOODWORK- Valencia 2-3 Barcelona

Lionel Messi's miss is almost instantly punished. Valencia substitute Jonas curls in an effort from the edge of the box that is tipped onto the post by the fingertips of the outstanding Victor Valdes.

3-2 with less than four minutes to go. This like watching a basketball game at the moment, frantic end-to-end stuff.

  8. 2143:
    Spanish La LigaValencia 2-3 Barcelona

    Staggering. Just staggering.

Lionel Messi steadies himself six yards from goal after expertly jinking his way into space. The Valencia fans close their eyes and expect the worst.

Somehow, when they look up again, Messi is holding his hands on his head and the scoreline remains 3-2.

  9. 2140:
French Ligue 1GOAL- Marseille 1-2 Monaco - Emmanuel Riviere (79 mins)

Seconds after missing that chance, 23-year-old Emmanuel Riviere slots home past Steve Mandanda for his fifth goal in four games this season.

Riviere has looked a lot more dynamic than Radamel Falcao.

  10. 2139:
French Ligue 1GREAT SAVE!- Marseille 1-1 Monaco

Monaco substitute Emmanuel Riviere is through on goal but Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda comes charging off his line to deny the striker brilliantly.

  11. 2139:
    Spanish La LigaValencia 2-3 Barcelona

Barcelona look to have weathered the storm against Valencia, with 10 minutes to go. After a flurry of goals in the first half, there has been much less action after the break.

Valencia are still trying to force a leveller, with defender Ricardo Costa heading wide after he barrelled through to the ball.

  12. 2137:
    Mesut Ozil

Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign 24-year-old Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil, BBC Sport have learned

The Gunners are also working on other deals, including a move for Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, 27.

You feel Gareth Bale's transfer to Real means tomorrow is going to be a very busy transfer deadline day.

  13. 2134:
    SUBSTITUTION- Marseille 1-1 Monaco

Monaco striker Radamel Falcao picked up an ankle injury while falling awkwardly a few minutes ago and he is replaced by Emmanuel Riviere - the France Under-21 international should be an adequate replacement after scoring four goals in three games so far this season.

Saad Bin Hasaan: Barca need a top quality centre-back. The ones they have are just too slow.

  15. 2127:

Manchester City confirm the signing of Argentine defender Martin Demichelis. The 32-year-old has agreed a two-year contract.

Demichelis - who played under City manager Manuel Pellegrini at River Plate and Malaga - ends a short stay at previous club Atletico Madrid, after only joining them this summer.

  16. 2125:
French Ligue 1HITS THE WOODWORK- Marseille 1-1 Monaco

Monaco go close twice in 30 seconds as Layvin Kurzawa hits the post and then the ball lands to Radamel Falcao but he is unable to turn to shoot on goal and is eventually crowded out.

  17. 2124:
Spanish La LigaWHAT A MISS!- Valencia 2-3 Barcelona

Pedro will be disappointed with that. The Spain international is picked out after cutting in from the flank, but rather pathetically heads wide with the goal at his mercy.

That was a great opportunity for Barcelona to seal a valuable win.

  18. 2123:
    Zulte-Waregem celebrate

Franck Berrier scored a last-minute winner as Zulte-Waregem beat nine-man Anderlecht in a 4-3 thriller. Thogan Hazard, Eden's brother and on loan from Chelsea, scored Zulte-Waregem's first goal to make it 1-1.

Standard Liege beat Kortrijk 2-0, Sporting Charleroi and Genk drew 1-1 and Club Bruges won 2-0 at Waasland-Beveren in Sunday's other games.

Patrick Ikhena: People complain about the skewed Spanish league but this is better than any premier league so far this season

Sammiiee..T.N.T: Messi races to a hat-trick..postiga nods home a brace..half time 2-3..this game is FAR away from over.

Jonny Bowering: Messi and Neymar don't connect on the pitch? The media love making up rubbish to put down Barca. Well played Postiga though!

  20. 2117:

Swiss league leaders Young Boys fell to a second defeat of the season, throwing away a lead to lose 2-1 to Basel - with all three goals coming in three second-half minutes.

St Gallen beat Luzern 4-1, with Goran Karanovic scoring a hat-trick against his old club. Thun beat Lausanne by the same scoreline in the day's other game.

  21. 2115:
Italian Serie AAC Milan 3-1 Cagliari
    Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli gets on the scoresheet for AC Milan after blasting into the net. That makes it 3-1 to the Rossoneri against Cagliari, and that should be that.

  22. 2113:
French Ligue 1HITS THE WOODWORK- Marseille 1-1 Monaco

Marseille striker Andre Ayew almost went from villain to hero in a second there but his shot from an angle hits the crossbar. This game is starting to really get going now.

And within two minutes, Andre-Pierre Gignac fires a shot off target.

  23. 2112:
French Ligue 1YELLOW CARD- Marseille's Andre Ayew

Andre Ayew is booked for diving, the Ghana forward is played in by Andre-Pierre Gignac and he goes down under pressure from Layvin Kurzawa but the referee deems he has dived and awards a free out as well as booking the Marseille man.

  24. 2112:
    Spanish La LigaValencia 2-3 Barcelona

Valencia have started the half strongly. Unsurprisingly, after seeing the Barcelona back-line creaking at the end of the first period, they are driving right at them.

Winger-turned full-back Andres Guardado has just wasted a good opportunity as his deep run is picked out. The Mexico international can only slice his effort high, wide and not very handsome from the left of the penalty area.

  25. 2108:
French Ligue 1GOAL- Marseille 1-1 Monaco - Radamel Falcao (47 mins)
    Radamel Falcao

Radamel Falcao is a master poacher, the ball is played across to the £51m Colombian five yards from goal and he levels up the Cote d'Azur derby.

  26. 2105:
French Ligue 1KICK-OFF- Marseille 1-0 Monaco

Monaco kick off the second half at the Stade Velodrome as they bid to show they mean business in the title race.

  27. 2105:
    Portuguese Primeira Liga

Jackson Martinez struck the only goal as Porto beat Pacos de Ferreira and Nacional beat 10-man Belenenses 3-2.

  28. 2104:
Spanish La LigaKICK-OFF- Valencia 2-3 Barcelona

The second half is underway at the Mestalla as Valencia look to chase down Barcelona.

  29. 2102:
    Russian Premier League

Konstantin Zyryanov scored an 86th-minute winner as Zenit St Petersburg beat Lokomotiv Moscow 2-1.

Salomon Rondon scored a hat-trick as Rubin Kazan beat Ural, while Spartak Moscow beat Tomsk 2-1.

  30. 2102:
    Italian Serie ASERIE A UPDATE
    AC Milan celebrate

The second half action is underway in Serie A. AC Milan still lead 2-1 against Cagliari, while Germany international Mario Gomez has scored his first top flight goal for Fiorentina as they lead Genoa 3-0.

Inter are holding on to their slim 1-0 advantage against Catania, Emmanuel Badu's early goal for Udinese is all that separates them from Parma, while Livorno are 1-0 in front in the battle of the newly promoted sides against Sassuolo.

  31. 2100:
    Turkish Super Lig

Hugo Almeida scored twice as Besiktas beat Gaziantepspor 2-0, while Karabukspor, Rizespor and Akhisar Belediyespor were also victorious in Turkey's top flight.

  32. 2054:
    Spanish La LigaValencia 2-3 Barcelona
    Lionel Messi

Just the four goals there in the final few minutes of the first half. Barcelona looked to be coasting through Lionel Messi's triple, only for Helder Postiga to score a spellbinding bicycle kick and more mundane header to put Valencia right back in it.

Barca have looked lethal in attack, and utterly suspect in defence. Still sure you do not want to sign that centre-back, Tata Martino?

  33. 2052:
    Tobias Sana of Ajax

Surprise Eredivisie leaders Zwolle remained top of the table with their 1-1 draw against Utrecht although it was the first time they had dropped points in their opening five games.

Groningen and Ajax drew 1-1, as did AZ Alkmaar and Vitesse, while Feyenoord hammered Roda 4-0 for only their second win of the season.

Bobby Rooney: Cracking game in the Andalucian Derby between Sevilla-Malaga, Morales for Malaga was cancelled out by Gamiero Header on 45'

  35. 2050:

Former Colchester United loanee Matthias Vilhjalmsson scored a hat-trick as Start hammered Sandnes 7-0 in Norway's Tippeligaen. The 25-year-old Iceland international failed to score in three League One substitute appearances for the U's in 2011.

  36. 2048:
    HALF-TIME- Marseille 1-0 Monaco

Lucas Mendes' header moments before the break gives Marseille a deserved half-time lead as they bid to make it four wins from four in Ligue 1.

Their Cote d'Azur and title rivals Monaco will need to improve in the second half if they are to avoid a first defeat of the season.

  37. 2049:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Valencia 2-3 Barcelona - Helder Postiga (45 mins)

What an end to the half! We look to have a game on our hands as Helder Postiga smartly nods in a corner deep into first-half injury-time.

Andrew Priestley: Messi is ridiculously good. He's heard told about the Bale signing before kick-off and he's gone out there to prove a point.

  39. 2047:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Valencia 1-3 Barcelona - Helder Postiga (45 mins)

Lionel Messi may have a hat-trick, but it will take something very special to beat Helder Postiga to the goal-of-the-night award.

The former Spurs striker makes the most of a poor cross, by acrobatically sending in a stunning bicycle-kick. Is that a glimmer of hope?

  40. 2045:
GOAL- Marseille 1-0 Monaco - Lucas Mendes (44 mins)

Marseille have been pushing for a goal and they take the lead as Brazilian defender Lucas Mendes beats Eric Abidal to the ball and heads home a corner.

Dominic O'Caollai: Just as Valencia were getting back into it and playing some good football. They've shot themselves in the foot twice, and paid!

  42. 2042:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Valencia 0-3 Barcelona - Lionel Messi (40 mins)

How many hat-tricks balls does Lionel Messi own? His third goal of the night - and second in two minutes - arrives courtesy of a jinking run inside from Neymar.

The Brazilian spots Messi with his arm up, and unselfishly plays him in his team-mate, who is left with the simplest of finishes.

Rebecca via 81111: I'm moving to Spain tomorrow - will be an hour away from Barcelona so will hope to see them play at some point! Think it's (again) between them and Real for the title. Rebecca.

Mark in Bradford via 81111: I am now looking forward to El Clasico on 17 October Mark, Bradford

  44. 2040:
    French Ligue 1Marseille 0-0 Monaco

It's a lovely move by Marseille, Mathieu Valbuena plays the ball out right to Rod Fanni, whose volleyed cross comes back to Andre Ayew, but the forward fires wide.

  45. 2040:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Valencia 0-2 Barcelona - Lionel Messi (38 mins)

And just like that it looks to be all over. Ever Banega is trapped by Barcelona's trademark pressing.

The ball is instantly spread to Lionel Messi who moves into the box and effortlessly cracks in an accurate low drive. That's four goals in two La Liga appearances for the great man.

  46. 2039:
Spanish La LigaGREAT SAVE!- Valencia 0-1 Barcelona

What a save! Barcelona have been dominant but their suspect defence comes to the fore.

Some excellent Valencia build-up play puts new boy Dorlan Pabon through, only for Victor Valdes to pull of an excellent low save after racing out to narrow the angle.

Conor in Surrey via 81111: The transfer market hasn't gone out of control, it has merely evolved with the times and inflation. Bale is no way worth more then Ronaldo but that was 4 years ago and it's only 5 million more.

  48. 2037:
Match of the Day presenter and former Barcelona striker Gary LinekerValencia 0-1 Barcelona

"Bale & Ronaldo v Messi & Neymar promises much. An early marker has been put down with another goal from Lionel in Valencia."

  49. 2034:
French Ligue 1YELLOW CARD- Monaco's Ricardo Carvalho

Monaco have wily old centre-back Ricardo Carvalho booked for a foul on Mathieu Valbuena just outside the box - half an hour gone at the Stade Velodrome, still no goals.

  50. 2030:
    French Ligue 1Marseille 0-0 Monaco

So, why are Monaco the second favourites for the league title despite being in the second tier last season? Well, it might have something to do with Russian billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev.

Since their promotion, they have spent over £50m on Radamel Falcao, £21.5m on Joao Moutinho, £38.5m for James Rodríguez and £17m on Geoffrey Kondogbia, as well as bringing in Jeremy Toulalan, Ricardo Carvalho and Eric Abidal.

As well as Rybolovlev's billions, they have also been helped by the fact their non-French players do not have to pay tax as Monaco is an independent tax-free state, while all their league rivals' players do have to pay tax - a loophole the French league wants to change.

  51. 2029:
    Spanish La LigaValencia 0-1 Barcelona

Barcelona have been at their vibrant best, but only have Lionel Messi's dynamic goal to show for their endeavours.

Valencia are chasing shadows as Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Sergio Busquets refuse to give up the ball. While up top, Neymar and Messi are looking to probe every area of space.

    Lionel Messi

So now we're going to move our attention towards action on the pitch.

Can anyone stop Barcelona this season with Neymar and Lionel Messi up front?

Will Monaco topple Paris St-Germain in France? Who do you fancy for the Italian crown?

  53. 2025:

Former Wales and Arsenal striker John Hartson: "He will be delighted with the move, it has been a long time coming.

"For now he will be excited, a little bit nervous but he has a six-year contract and as soon as he finds his feet, his performances will no doubt be as good as they have been.

"It is not every day you get the opportunity to be the most expensive footballer. His performances mean he is up there with the very, very best.

"He will be fine, he is a level-headed lad and has an inner confidence. He is Wales' best player. I know it is a massive fee but he is intelligent enough to cope with that.

"There are two players above Gareth, Messi and Ronaldo. They have been fantastic over the past four or five years, Gareth's aim is to become as good as them. He has been given the platform to do that. Real are a massive, massive pull."

    Giuseppe Rossi

Italy international Giuseppe Rossi looks back to his best following a lengthy injury lay-off, as his goal helps Fiorentina to an early 2-0 lead at Genoa.

The former Manchester United striker scored for the first time in 23 months last weekend, after he was sidelined by a series of horrendous knee ligament problems.

Elsewhere, goals from Robinho and Philippe Mexes have put AC Milan 2-1 up against Cagliari. Neighbours Inter Milan are leading 1-0 in the tricky away game at Catania.

  55. 2022:
    Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale was named PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year last season, as well as winning the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.

Lord Camomile: A player's price does not reflect his objective worth, just how much he's worth to the club that's buying him. Market forces

Jamie Fraser: CR7 integral in 3 PL & CL triumph scoring bucket-loads in the process, Bale has had 1 great PL season; €100m is ludicrous

Maxey: Why are people saying Bale has had one good season? Been class for three seasons now.

    Keep them coming at #bbceurofooty

Tim in London via 81111: Re Michael Owen...This means Spurs now have a summer spending deficit of around £30m rather than £110m, and they still lose to Arsenal. Hardly a great deal all round.

Shaun in Harrogate via 81111: I wonder who will be the next player to break that world record transfer fee? Ronaldo to PSG maybe next year?

  58. 2015:
    German BundesligaBUNDESLIGA UPDATE
    Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Star summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Borussia Dortmund career has sparked into life after his brace secured a 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Armenian, hampered by a pre-season ankle injury, had struggled to fit in during the early weeks of the Bundesliga season. But the former Liverpool target's brace - either side of a Vaclav Kadlec equaliser - helped moved Jurgen Klopp's side top of the table.

Earlier today, Stuttgart hammered Hoffenheim 6-2 with Vedad Ibisevic scoring a hat-trick against for former club.

  59. 2013:
    Iker Casillas and Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale came up against Real Madrid in the 2011 Champions League quarter-final. Unfortunately for Bale, Spurs lost 5-0 on aggregate.

  60. 2012:
Spanish La LigaGOAL- Valencia 0-1 Barcelona - Lionel Messi (10 mins)

You simply cannot afford to defend like that against players of the vision of Cesc Fabregas and the finishing skills of Lionel Messi.

From his position as orchestrator in midfield in the absence of Xavi, Fabregas looks up to see a huge gap in the middle of the Valencia defence. He sends a perfect through-ball to Messi, who bursts past the pathetic defensive line, dribbles past the goalkeeper, and scores into an open goal.

Ben via 81111: How can anyone think that Bale is worth more than Ronaldo?! The transfer market has gone from world class players going for £30m to a very good player going for £85m! The amounts of money spent now are ridiculous. Ben

Will in Ipswich via 81111: Bale is a top class player but never worth €100 million, no football player is. The Transfer market is out of control and needs serious work after this to stop such ridiculous amounts being spent on football players - Will from Ipswich

Tom in Derby via 81111: Bale to earn more in a week than the US president earns a year. Wow! Tom, Derby

Jack in Norwich via 81111: Spurs are nothing without Bale. Di Maria is just as exciting to watch though, so why they've spent so much on such a similar player is a joke! Jack, Norwich

Jack Parkes: Do Real Madrid even know where they want to play Gareth Bale? Seems like they just want the toy because another kid has it.

  67. 1956:
    Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale exploded into life last season in his first (and only) season under Andre Villas-Boas with 26 goals in 44 matches. This time last year it was unthinkable that Bale would become the world's most expensive player of all time.

Michael Hall: Good job by Tottenham to get as much money as they have for Bale, poor job by Madrid for over paying for another player.

Jawad Kayani: Gareth Bale transfer is a symbol of British football talent around the world.

Paul Goodhead: I think Tottenham have done good business there. Bale is talented, yes, but not worth more than Ronaldo.

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football WriterGARETH BALE TRANSFER REACTION

"Tottenham's defeat at Arsenal was a timely reminder of what they will miss now Gareth Bale has finally completed his protracted move to Real Madrid.

"They will miss those match-winning moments and brushstrokes of genius that decorated his recent seasons at White Hart Lane.

"Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, however, was understandably confident in his statements following the completion of the deal that takes Bale to the Bernabeu.

"Manager Andre Villas-Boas, with Levy and director of football Franco Baldini pulling the levers, has refurbished his squad with a succession of fine signings such as Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela and Paulinho.

"The big question is can they replace Bale? And only time will provide the answer after the loss of this magnificent player."

  72. 1949:

"It's very important to throw your heart and soul into it. It's different, it's huge, and it's whether he can cope with that.

"He's got it all. He showed that last season and the only question now is whether he's got the mental strength to be able to cope with such a big move and the spotlight that will be immense over there in Spain.

"Ability-wise he is phenomenal. A player costing that much money, it's hard to justify that sort of fee. It's an incredible amount of money and no player is worth that, beyond perhaps Messi and Ronaldo."

Conrad in Oxford via 81111: Ronaldo and Bale playing together? Barca can forget about La Liga this year.

Greg in London via 81111: Bale is nowhere near worth £85m. Only Cristiano Ronaldo is worth that amount. The transfer market has been terribly inflated!

Kevin in Wales via 81111: Bale and Ronaldo on each wing? Be afraid La very afraid.

  76. 1939:
    Gareth Bale

"He will be feted and vilified, his life will come under the microscope like never before. But none of whatever triumph, disaster, heartache and adulation he faces in Madrid will be allowed to go to his head."

Read BBC Sport's feature on grounded Gareth.

  77. 1933:

Gareth Bale's wages, before tax, will be around £300,000 per week.

Not bad for a player who was linked to Birmingham City in 2009.

  78. 1931:
Gareth Bale and Real Madrid players

Gareth Bale statement continued: "I am not sure there is ever a good time to leave a club where I felt settled and was playing the best football of my career to date. I know many players talk of their desire to join the club of their boyhood dreams, but I can honestly say, this is my dream come true.

"I am well aware that I would not be at the level I am today were it not for firstly Southampton and then Spurs standing by me during some of the tougher times and affording me the environment and support they have.

"Tottenham will always be in my heart and I'm sure that this season will be a successful one for them. I am now looking forward to the next exciting chapter in my life, playing football for Real Madrid."

  79. 1930:

Gareth Bale statement: "I have had six very happy years at Tottenham but it's the right time to say goodbye. We've had some special times together over the years and I've loved every minute of it.

"I would like to thank everyone at the club, the chairman, board, staff, coaches and players - and most of all the fantastic fans who I hope will understand this amazing career opportunity."

  80. 1927:
Dan Roan, BBC sports news correspondentGARETH BALE TRANSFER REACTION

This is no ordinary club and no ordinary player. Gareth Bale is swapping White Hart Lane for the Bernabeu, the fans were made to wait but now they can look forward to welcoming the world's latest galactico.

For the Premier League a sad day, it has lost a bright star, but it is a fairytale for the player. He has his place in footballing history as one of the most expensive players in the world.

It means Tottenham have a huge amount of money to spend, they have already done it. The reason they delayed is they were upset at Real Madrid's behaviour, last weekend they constructed a stage where they intended to unveil him and they started selling shirts on their website mistakenly.

The other crucial reason is Spurs struggled to find a direct replacement, there was also a game being played with Arsenal, who they heard were after several Real Madrid players.

Today's big match in France sees Marseille face big rivals and fellow title contenders Monaco at 2000 BST.

Marseille finished second last season to Paris St-Germain, while Monaco have just been promoted from Ligue 2 - but have invested in spectacular style this summer, spending in the region of £130m.

The hosts top the table with nine points from three games but Monaco would go top with a victory, having won two and drawn one game so far this season.

PSG beat Guingamp yesterday, while in today's earlier games St Etienne beat Bordeaux 2-1 and Nice drew 2-2 with Montpellier.

Spanish La LigaValencia v Barcelona (2000 BST)

Barcelona start Neymar and Lionel Messi for the first time together in La Liga. Midfielder Xavi and winger Alexis Sanchez are rested.

For Valencia, Colombia striker Dorlan Pabon makes his debut following his move from Monterrey.

Rian Hoskins: Bale will be lethal on the counter attack and while he may not score as many goals as Messi or Ronaldo, he should be a success.

Jack Elphick-Calle: I will be dancing in delight if #Arsenal get Ozil now the Bale deal has gone through. Ozil is better than Bale!

Thomas: Absolutely stupid fee. Can't exactly see the Spanish country being happy at Real Madrid spending 100 million euros

K Love: 85 Million for a player? one person ? don't care how good you are, no need for that much in money in ANY sport

"He is a player whose career we have fostered and developed and he was only a year into his new four-year contract."

Hours before Bale's Real Madrid arrival was confirmed, his new team made it three wins from three with a 3-1 success over Athletic Bilbao.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a header and £23m summer signing from Malaga, Isco, scored twice - both from Karim Benzema assists before Ibai Gomez's consolation.

Athletic's star midfielder Ander Herrera, 24, was an unused substitute following a bid from Manchester United. Head coach Ernesto Valverde denied that he was left out as a result of the bid.

Atletico Madrid are beating fellow Champions League qualifiers Real Sociedad 1-0 at half-time thanks to a David Villa strike.

Thousands of supporters headed to the Nou Camp in June to greet Neymar when Barcelona finally completed the £49m signing of Brazil's golden boy.

The sense of excitement only increased after he was named player of the tournament following his nation's emotional Confederations Cup victory on home soil.

The prospect of the greatest South American-based star teamed with the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, what more could you ask for?

Lennon and McCartney. Strawberries and cream. Chas and Dave.

Life is full of great double acts.

In Neymar and Lionel Messi, Barcelona appear to possess football's next outstanding partnership.

Thus far, new head coach Gerardo Martino has been sparing in his use of the South American superstars. Will tonight be the first time the duo will be allowed to run rampant from the start in La Liga?
