As it happened

  1. 2130:

Four games, 11 goals. A mightily generous hors d'oeuvre before the bulk of European football takes place over the weekend. Borussia Dortmund top the Bundesliga for now but title rivals Bayern Munich take to the stage on Saturday afternoon when they can claim a bit of history. If they avoid defeat against Nurnberg they will set a new club record of 28 games unbeaten.

Meanwhile, the Italian Serie A gets under way as the likes of Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain will be hoping to shine for their respective new clubs. So join me again for more European football action from 1600 BST on Saturday. Until then, goodbye for now.

Ruaridh Williams: The atmosphere at English football matches has a lot to learn from the German atmosphere. Electric

  3. 2123:
German BundesligaFULL-TIME- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen

Borussia Dortmund make it three wins from three thanks to a solitary strike from Robert Lewandowski. It should really have been more but the home side failed to see away a plethora of chances. Lewandowski opting to commit his immediate future to the club this week could well prove as crucial as any new signing.

  4. 2120:
    Ligue 1FULL-TIME- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

Three pips on the whistle and then absolute silence as Toulouse pick up a creditable point. Monaco will have to muster more than this to worry PSG though.

  5. 2118:
German BundesligaSUBSTITUTION- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen

Franco Di Santo sees a shot blocked as Werder Bremen suggest they are not out of this game just yet. Jurgen Klopp responds by sending on Sven Bender for Marco Reus as the hosts look to see the game out.

  6. 2115:
Ligue 1HITS THE WOODWORK- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

What a strike! Monaco almost win it at the death as France international Jeremy Toulalan cracks in a shot from 30 yards, it has buckets of serve behind it and crashes away off the angle of post and bar. A sensational effort from a man with one solitary Ligue 1 goal to his name in his whole career!

  7. 2113:

Jack Frost: Watching Monaco game, are players as vocal as this with a crowd? constantly screaming at each other, like playground kids!

Tell me about it Jack. The Toulouse keeper has got a set of lungs...

  8. 2112:
German BundesligaCLOSE!- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen
    Robert Lewandowski

Werder Bremen holding on at the moment and Aaron Hunt keeps them in the game with a goalline clearance from Robert Lewandowski, who strikes at goal from no more than six yards from a corner. That came after Theodor Gebre Selassie, who has been everywhere at the back for the visitors, was once again called upon to clear a teasing low cross by Jonas Hofmann.

  9. 2108:
German BundesligaBorussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen

Into the last 10 minutes with Dortmund maintaining their slender advantage, although Werder Bremen are by no means out of the game. Sebastian Prodl launches a free kick into the area but Dortmund deal with it comfortably.

  10. 2106:
Ligue 1GREAT SAVE!- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

The £55m striker Radamel Falcao has been quiet all evening but his eyes light up as Monaco win a free-kick 25 yards from goal. The Colombian bends his shot neatly over the wall but Ali Ahamada moves his feet well to get across and make the save. Into teh last 15 minutes or so now.

  11. 2104:
German BundesligaCLOSE!- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's blistering pace is already on show as the striker's fine first touch allows him to race towards goal, but goalkeeper Sebastian Mielitz reacts quickly to block his low shot with his leg.

  12. 2101:
    Ligue 1Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

Still no sign of that elusive breakthrough for Monaco, but they will go top of the Ligue 1 table with a point tonight. If I'd spent as much money this summer as Monaco I would expect more than this at home though. They've been poor.

  13. 2059:
German BundesligaSUBSTITUTION- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen

Borussia Dortmund also make a change as Jakub Błaszczykowski makes way for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabon striker, who scored a hat-trick on his Bundesliga debut for the club, is clearly a fans favourite already at Dortmund as his arrival on the pitch is met by huge cheers.

  14. 2057:

Opta Sports: 8 - Marco Reus had a hand in 8 goals in his last 5 games against Bremen (5 goals, 3 assists). Favourite

  15. 2056:
German BundesligaSUBSTITUTION- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen respond to Robert Lewandowski's goal by making a double substitution. Coming on is a familiar face for watchers of the Premier League last season as former Wigan striker Franco Di Santo makes his first appearance for his new club, replacing Marko Arnautovic. Felix Kroos also comes on for Mehmet Ekici.

  16. 2054:
    Ligue 1Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

Dire stuff in the opening 20 minutes of the second half with neither side creating much of note at all. There are 25 minutes or so remaining for Monaco to kick into gear.

  17. 2052:

Ollie in London: Gotze was an outstanding player and is a big loss but for me he was probably the least important player out of the central midfielders. Gundogan was unbelievable and can dictate the tempo of any match, while Bender is the key link between defence and midfield - he's a top class player that seems to be underrated and overlooked in the same way that Busquets is for Barcelona.

  18. 2052:
    La LigaFULL-TIME- Getafe 1-2 Almeria

Full time in the La Liga clash between Getafe and Almeria as Diego Castro's late penalty rescues a point for the home side.

The visitors will feel aggrieved at not having collected all three points. They twice led through goals from Rodrigo and Fernando Soriano.

  19. 2051:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueFULL-TIME- Heerenveen 3-3 Ajax

A brilliant end to a fabulous match! Heerenven have two good chances to win the game in stoppage-time, as first a fine counter-attack ends with Sven Kums drilling in a shot which is well saved by the legs of Kenneth Vermeer.

Vermeer then almost undoes all his good work as he goes wondering outside his area, is tackled and Kums chips from 40 yards toward the open goal - but the ball lands on the roof of the net!

    It ends 3-3.

  20. 2042:
GOAL- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Werder Bremen - Robert Lewandowski (55 mins)

Well no-one would say this has not been coming as Dortmund finally get the breakthrough they have threatened to claim for so long. Simple stuff in the end as Marco Reus's square ball is poked into the net from close range by Robert Lewandowski for his second of the season.

  21. 2040:
German BundesligaBorussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Fancy footwork from Robert Lewandowski is not catching out the Werder Bremen defence as the striker attempts to dance his way into the area. Sebastian Kehl then sees an effort deflected wide as Dortmund pick up from where they had left off. The crowd respond by upping their vocal support another notch. Great atmosphere at Westfalenstadion.

  22. 2039:
Eredivisie Dutch leaguePENALTY APPEAL- Heerenveen 3-3 Ajax

Into the last 10 minutes of a captivating game in the Eredivisie. Ajax and Heerenveen have slugged it out toe-to-toe, and Frank de Boer's side want a penalty for a handball but they are turned away by an uninterested referee.

Neither side deserve to lose this one.

Markus: Oh well.... since Willian has disappeared to Chelsea, Tottenham might as well sign Christian Eriksen. Half the price as well.

  24. 2033:
German BundesligaKICK-OFF- Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Borussia Dortmund get the second half under way at Westfalenstadion as the two sides look to maintain their 100% record so far in the Bundesliga.

  25. 2032:
Ligue 1 French league, Ligue 1KICK-OFF- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

The home side get the second half under way in an eerily quiet Stade de Louis II.

Steve Moran: Despite the top #bbceurofooty commentary, no words can express the surreal noise of a supporter-free top flight match #monacotoulouse

Rian Hoskins: Dortmund had a terrific starting XI but not as much depth as Bayern. Especially in midfield, they now have plethora of talent.

  27. 2027:
Ligue 1 French league, Ligue 1Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

There might be no fans in attendance, but there are some prestigious guests at Stade Louis II to watch Monaco against Toulouse.

Prince Albert of Monaco and France coach Didier Deschamps are at the game, with the latter casting his eye over potential call ups ahead of naming his squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers in Georgia and Belarus.

Neither are being served up much entertainment so far, but plenty of time for that to change with the second half under way shortly.

  28. 2023:
    Eredivisie Dutch leagueHeerenveen 3-3 Ajax

Ajax are level through a moment of class from Christian Eriksen, who shows just why he continues to be linked with the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham.

Bojan Krkic pulls out to the right wing and finds Eriksen 25 yards out, he takes one touch before arrowing a low shot right into the corner, perfectly placed across the turf.

  29. 2020:

Alex in London on text via 81111: Mario Gotze was not a massive loss for BVB as it was when they lost Shinji Kagawa. They have become accustomed to playing without Mario because of his injury problems. Gundogan looked exceptional in the Super Cup win over Bayern playing in a more advanced role and with the return of Sahin, Lewandowski staying for another year and the signings of Mkhtaryan and Aubameyang, I can see them seriously challenging Munich again this season.

  30. 2019:
    La LigaGetafe 1-2 Almeria

In Spain, Almeria still lead at Getafe with 25 minutes or so remaining. Can they hang on?

  31. 2017:
German BundesligaHALF-TIME- Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen
    Borussia Dortmund

Thrilling end to the half with Borussia Dortmund perhaps wondering how they are not three or four goals to good. Werder Bremen cleared off the line in the closing stages before Nuri Sahin volleyed over for Jurden Klopp's side. Bremen's chances have been few, although they almost snatched the lead with the last kick of the half as Aaron Hunt's superb through ball sent Mark Arnautovic through down the right, but he rolled his shot just wide.

  32. 2016:
German BundesligaCLOSE!- Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Huge let off for Werder Bremen as Iikay Gundogan sends a deep cross from the right to Marco Reus inside the area. His first-time shot takes a slight deflection off the heel of Theodor Gebre Selassie and it seems for all the world that Robert Lewandowski will turn the ball into the empty net, but the ball is just out of the reach of the Polish striker.

  33. 2015:
    HALF-TIME- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

I'm not sure how much playing behind closed doors has affected them, but Monaco were not quite at it in that first 45 minutes. Star man Radamel Falcao looks short of match fitness to me and Claudio Ranieri's men need to raise it after the break.

  34. 2012:
    Eredivisie Dutch leagueHeerenveen 3-2 Ajax

You're not wrong Markus (see below) - it's been a fine game in the Eredivisie so far. Ajax have had most of the ball in the opening 10 minutes of the second half but have found no way through. They do look a threat from corners still though, which is not what you expect from Ajax.

Markus: So pleased #bbceurofooty following Heerenveen-Ajax. Watching it here in Holland. Great entertainment, & some players who will play in PL soon.

Tristan Quinault: Quite remarkable how money changes football teams. Barely a year ago I was watching Monaco kick off their Ligue 2 campaign.

  36. 2009:
German BundesligaHITS THE WOODWORK- Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Borussia Dortmund are getting closer as half time approaches. Werder Bremen seemingly forget their defensive responsibilities after a rare attack breaks down and Jakub Blaszczykowski is given the freedom of the right side of the pitch as Dortmund push forward. The midfielder runs unopposed to the edge of the area before lashing an effort against the underside of the crossbar.

  37. 2006:
    Ligue 1Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

It's been all Monaco but the visitors go close to taking the lead in fine style as midfielder Oscar Trejo lets fly from 25 yards, arcing his bending shot just beyond Danijel Subasic's left-hand post.

  38. 2004:
German BundesligaCLOSE!- Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Closest yet for Borussia Dortmund as Sebastian Kehl clips a fine pass towards Marcos Reus, who is lurking on the left side of the Werder Bremen area. He looks up and cracks an effort at goal, but the ball is inches wide and smashes into an advertising hoarding.

  39. 2001:
German BundesligaBorussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Rare foray into Borussia Dortmund's half for Werder Bremen as Ozkan Yildirim attempts to tee up Marko Arnautovic but the Austrian forward fails to connect with the ball as well as he would have hoped and skews a harmless effort well wide.

  40. 1959:
    Ligue 1SITTER!- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

Where's your £55m striker when you need him? Monaco miss an absolute sitter.

Toulouse keeper Ali Ahamada can only parry a cross-shot into the goalmouth and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco looks certain to score, he's got an open net but somehow toes it over from five yards out. A shocker.

Andrew Valette: Think it was a mistake for Gotze to move. Distinct risk of him getting "Scott Sinclair'ed" at Bayern

Wasim Parkar: Klopp can easily play the quartet of Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang, Lewandowski and Reus with Gundogan and Sahin/Bender behind them.

Keep your Tweets coming to #bbceurofooty

  42. 1955:
Ligue 1GREAT SAVE!- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

Monaco go close again as some patient build-up play almost pays off. Again, it's Emmanuel Riviere who does the damage, beating his man with a lovely touch before firing in a shot which is palmed clear by Toulouse keeper Ali Ahamada. Radamel Falcao can't steer the rebound in.

  43. 1954:
German BundesligaCLOSE!- Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Sumptuous football from Borussia Dortmund as the lively Henrikh Mkhitaryan plays a smart one-two with Robert Lewandowksi on the edge of the Werder Bremen area, putting the former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder through on goal, but he drives his shot well wide. Let off for the visitors.

  44. 1950:
    La LigaHALF-TIME- Getafe 1-2 Almeria

There's a late flurry of goals in the first half at Getafe as well, where on-loan Liverpool man Suso got the ball rolling, laying on Almeria's opener for Rodri.

Ángel Lafita equalised two minutes later but Fernando Soriano fired in to ensure that Almeria lead at the break.

  45. 1949:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueHALF-TIME- Heerenveen 3-2 Ajax

What a game! Never write off Marco van Basten. His Heerenveen side were 2-0 down but have fought back to lead before the break, as Luciano Slagveer skips clear on the right and picks out Magnus Wolff Eikrem, who steers home left-footed. Lovely finish.

    And that's half-time. Superb fightback.

  46. 1948:
German BundesligaBorussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen
    Borussia Dortmund

A frenetic start at Westfalenstadion has given away to some patient passing as Borussia Dortmund probe for an opening. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has his feet taken by a Werder Bremen defender on the right side of the area, some 25 yards from goal and Marco Reus steps up to do the honours from the resulting free kick. However, he curls his effort wide of goal.

  47. 1944:
    Ligue 1CLOSE!- Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

Great chance for the hosts to take the lead as Radamel Falcao plays in strike partner Emmanuel Riviere but the man who bagged a hat-trick last week can't find the target this time, dragging his left-footed shot across the face of goal.

  48. 1940:
    Ligue 1Monaco 0-0 Toulouse

A surreal atmosphere in Monaco where the match is being played behind closed doors. The linguistic skills of former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri are to the fore though as he is clearly audible barking out instructions in two - maybe three - languages.

Radamel Falcao looks lively in the opening stages but there have been no clear chances as yet.

Ben Gerrett: Lewandowski will be hungry for goals and eager to get ahead of Aubameyang, a brace for him I believe.

  50. 1938:
German BundesligaBorussia Dortmund 0-0 Werder Bremen

Bright start for Borussia Dortmund as Jakub Blaszczkowski flashes the ball across the face of goal and Theodor Gebre Selassie thumps the ball out for a corner. Bremen subsequently fail to clear from the set piece, but they are able to breathe a sigh of relief as Henrikh Mkhitaryan volleys wide from Marcel Schmelzer's deep cross.

  51. 1936:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueLatest scores- Heerenveen 2-2 Ajax

Goal time again in the Dutch league, as that man Alfred Finnbogason levels it up at two apiece. It's another cool finish from the Icelander.

Angus in York on text via 81111: I think Hummels is one of the best defenders in the world, Gundogan is the best midfielder in the world and with Lewandowski and Reus upfront I can see them beating Bayern this year, hopefully.

  53. 1930:

And we are under way in Germany and France with Borussia Dortmund taking on Werder Bremen at Westfalenstadion, while Monaco get things going against Toulouse.

  54. 1930:
    Ligue 1Monaco v Toulouse (1930 BST)

The Monaco and Toulouse players have just walked out onto the pitch surrounded by empty stands at Stade Louis II, with the game being played behind closed doors.

The principality side were given a one-match supporters ban following over zealous celebrations at the end of last season when they won promotion.

    Kick off coming up shortly.

  55. 1928:

This season there will be more European football than ever on the BBC Sport website.

You can expect regular live text commentaries rounding up all the action throughout the season, like this one, as well as more news stories, match previews and reports, all of which will be found on our new European football index.

On the radio, BBC World Service is live across Europe, bringing you the latest news, results and interviews from the top football leagues.

You can tune in on weekdays from 15:30 GMT (16:30 BST) on Sport Today and on Saturday Sportsworld from 14:00 GMT (15:00 BST)

  56. 1925:
    Eredivisie Dutch leagueHeerenveen 1-2 Ajax

What a start to the game in the Netherlands!

Ajax's former Liverpool midfielder Christian Poulsen is caught napping in midfield, Heerenveen spring the offside trap and Alfred Finnbogason keeps his cool to smash in his fifth of the season from 15 yards.

  57. 1924:
    German Bundesliga
    Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski scored a belter of an own goal in Dortmund's last league fixture - the 2-1 win against Eintracht Braunschweig - diverting a corner into the net with the back of his head.

That, however, came while the striker's mind was presumably on other matters. Seemingly unsettled and linked with moves to Bayern Munich and Chelsea, a reported pay rise for £3m has convinced him to stick around at Dortmund for another year.

If facing a Dortmund side that defeated them twice last season wasn't already daunting enough for Werder Bremen, having to deal with a settled and focused Lewandowski won't help matters.

  58. 1920:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueLatest scores- Heerenveen 0-2 Ajax

Heerenveen keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt is having a nightmare. After being at fault for the first goal he is at it again from another corner, misjudging the flight of the ball to allow Kolbeinn Sigborsson a simple header which he does not miss.

Sam Wilson: Think Gotze is more of a loss to Dortmund than he is a gain to Bayern, should've stayed in my opinion.

  60. 1916:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueLatest scores- Heerenveen 0-1 Ajax

Heerenveen made a bright start against Ajax - but after a few minutes of solid pressure the visitors are ahead with the 100th goal scored in this season's Dutch League already!

It comes from a corner and Niklas Moisander, who scored against Manchester City in the Champions League last season, nutmegs keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt at his near post.

  61. 1915:
    Monaco v Toulouse (1930 BST)

Radamel Falcao starts for the third successive game as Monaco host Toulouse. The summer signing from Atletico Madrid has settled in superbly at the French side, scoring two goals in as many games.

One player to have out shone Falcao's early season form, though, is Emmanuel Riviere. The 23-year-old has hit the back of the net on four occasions already and he is in Monaco's first XI against Toulouse.

While rambling to myself would probably represent a pretty regular Friday night occurrence, this live text commentary will be infinitely improved by your involvement.

Bayern Munich ran away with the Bundesliga last season, but do you see Borussia Dortmund providing a sterner test this time? How big a loss for Dortmund - and gain for Bayern - will Mario Gotze prove to be?

You can use #bbceurofooty on Twitter or text to 81111 (UK users only). As always, remember to stick your name on those texts. Cheers!

  63. 1904:
Eredivisie Dutch leagueONLY ONE VAN BASTEN!
    Marco van Basten

Legend is an overused word in football, or in fact life, these days but the Ajax fans at Heerenveen tonight will be serenading a bona fide club hero in the opposite dugout.

Marco van Basten, scorer of one of the finest volleys known to man and all-round Ajax and Netherlands ledge, is now managing Heerenveen. He didn't have the best of times managing Ajax but steered De Superfriezen to eighth last term.

Their game at Abe Lenstra Stadion has just kicked off.

  64. 1901:
Borussia Dortmund v Werder Bremen (1930 BST)

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp suggested in the build up to this game he would mix things up a little and he has opted to give Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a rest. The striker, who scored a hat-trick in Dortmund's 4-0 win against Augsborg on the opening day of the season is on the bench.

Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski, who earlier this week committed his immediate future to Dortmund, starts as he bids for a second goal of the season.

  65. 1856:
    La Liga

There are two games in Spain's La Liga tonight as well.

Getafe and Almeria - who both lost on the opening weekend last week - get us rolling at 1900 BST before the late game sees Athletic Bilbao face Osasuna at 2100.

The big boys are in action later in the weekend. Barcelona are in Malaga on Sunday evening before Real Madrid travel to Watford's parent club Granada on Monday.

  66. 1853:
    Eredivisie Dutch league

We have a game coming up in less than 10 minutes as Dutch champions Ajax - whose backroom staff of Frank de Boer, Dennis Bergkamp, Jaap Stam and Marc Overmars must make up the best work 5-a-side team ever - are in action at 1900 BST.

They travel to Heerenveen with both sides having taken six points from their three league games so far. Ajax duo Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen have been linked with moves away from the club before the end of the window. Will the Dutch giants keep hold of them?

  67. 1850:
    Ligue 1

Meanwhile, in France, Monaco boss Claudio Ranieri will be looking for his side to continue their fine start to the season as they host Toulouse.

Les Rouge are unbeaten so far this season after chalking up wins against Bordeaux and Montpellier - scoring six goals along the way - and they will no doubt be eyeing up a third successive win against a Toulouse side without a win so far.

  68. 1848:
    German Bundesliga

Hello and welcome to our latest venture into the world of European football. It is quite the little dance around the continent we have coming up with games in Spain, France and the Netherlands but much of our focus will be on Germany as Borussia Dortmund host Werder Bremen in a match that sees first against fifth. The two sides boast a 100% record so far this season, but something will have to give at Westfalenstadion.

  69. 1845:

It is the year 1963. The Beatles release their first album, the first-ever episode of Doctor Who is aired and Tottenham become the first British team to win a European trophy.

But in German football the year carries particular significance. On 24 August, Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen contest the first-ever game in the Bundesliga. Now, on the eve of the competition's 50th anniversary, the two sides meet for the 91st time.

In all those encounters, only three have ended goalless. Their last meeting finished in a 5-0 victory for Dortmund. If there is one thing history has taught us about this game, it is that we are sure to be in for a cracker...
