Welling secured their first win of the season as Ross Lafayette's late strike saw them beat Grimsby.

The striker's cool, left-foot finish from 12 yards out sealed the points for the Wings with five minutes remaining.

The Mariners almost took the lead on the stroke of half-time as Clayton McDonald's header from a Patrick McLaughlin corner hit the crossbar.

Jake Gallagher, Alex Dyer and Fraser Franks all went close for Welling after the break before Lafayette's winner.

Grimsby Town joint-manager Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside:

Post-match: Grimsby Town boss Hurst

"I felt overall there's no way we didn't deserve to come away with a point but, that said, we were disappointed with how the game panned out probably from sixty-five minutes onwards.

"Sometimes I think you have to respect what you've got but to leave with nothing and lose our first game of the season is disappointing.

"That's the danger we have when travelling away from home.

"Had we not brought more players down today we would have been scratching around so you need that cover. It wasn't ideal but we feel we've still got enough out there to get a result today."
