Manager Guy Whittingham happy with Portsmouth squad

Portsmouth manager Guy Whittingham says his squad for the new season is nearing completion following Monday's re-signing of captain Johnny Ertl.

Ertl, 30, signed a three-year deal, handing Pompey a boost as they prepare for life in League Two.

And with academy members also added to the squad, Whittingham will now scale down his search for new players.

"We are fairly pleased where we are, we are not targeting any more areas now," Whittingham told BBC Radio Solent.

Pompey ended the season with only a handful of players, having spent much of last term in administration.

Whittingham and his backroom team moved quickly once the campaign ended to bolster their squad and now have almost all their work done ahead of pre-season.

"We had to work hard the three or four weeks after the season finished to get the players in," he said.

"We got 15 on board and then Johnny joined us, so we have a good number as we have the five development players on board as well.

"I think we are relatively pleased. There is no rush we will look to see what is around, if something comes along that we like then we will look into it but we are quite happy where we are."

Pompey's financial constraints mean they will have a small playing squad, but Whittingham does not feel this will be a problem

"It is important to have a squad with players who can play in a number of positions and we are fairly pleased with where we are," he said.

"We are now just looking to see what is around to see if we can strengthen our squad."
