As it happened

  1. 1930:

It's been a good afternoon for supporters of Southampton, Aston Villa and Arsenal - and anybody who backed 66-1 shot Auroras Encore in the Grand National. I'm signing off now, but be sure to join Aimee Lewis for tomorrow's five-match Premier League offering. Thanks for your contributions today, goodnight.

  2. 1926:
    MANAGER REACTION- Norwich 2-2 Swansea

Norwich manager Chris Hughton: "We wanted a win but nothing changes, we still have to get enough points from the six remaining matches to make sure we're secure.

"We're at the part of the season that makes everyone that bit anxious and you have to have belief in the players."

  3. 1924:
MANAGER REACTION- Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 Blackburn

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones: "The one thing we have shown today was a lot of character, determination and grit. Our players have been superb for the last three months.

"We have got six cup finals left and it could take as many as 55 points to be safe; Barnsley stayed up last year with 43. It shows how much all the teams are fighting, but it is absolutely ridiculous, such a tough division."

  4.
    GET INVOLVED

Harry Williams: "Cardiff dragged Watford down to their level. Shame because Watford play good footy. Cardiff will struggle in the Premier League. An anti-Swansea."

  5. 1924:
PLAYER REACTION- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff's Ben Turner, speaking to Sky Sports: "The fear of losing out now [on promotion to the Premier League] is massive, it keeps us on our toes. We are working just as hard, as we do not know we are there until it is done mathematically."

  6. 1923:
PLAYER REACTION- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Watford striker Troy Deeney on Sky Sports: "I just tried to put myself about and I had a good battle with the Cardiff centre-backs. I was already off running [to celebrate] when David Marshall pulled off that save, but [moments like] that is why they are top, they grind out the results.

"We have to learn to do that ourselves. We are waiting for Hull to slip up and we must capitalise when they do."

  7. 1917:
    FULL-TIME- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

That's it, all over at Vicarage Road. The home side are now three points outside the automatic promotion places while Cardiff go five points clear of Hull at the top.

  8.
    GET INVOLVED

Steve Jackson in Islington via 81111: "Sam and CH (18.52) are presumably not Blackburn fans. Didn't they all hate Steve Kean?"

  9. 1916:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Watford try and stage a late rally and Fernando Forestieri, who has been lively since coming off the bench, sees his low shot deflected for a corner by Ben Turner. Good defending.

  10.
    GET INVOLVED

Pete Evans: "Having seen Cardiff several times this year, I think they'd struggle. Need to invest and get in some Premier League experience."

  11. 1913:
INJURY TIME- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

However, Almen Abdi's free-kick goes straight into the wall - a tame effort. We're going to have four minutes of injury time.

  12. 1912:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Jordon Mutch brings down Troy Deeney and Watford, with one minute of normal time remaining, have a free-kick 25 yards out....

  13.
    GET INVOLVED

Sean Whittall: "The amount of air time this ball is getting, not sure i'm watching Super Rugby or Watford v Cardiff..."

  14.
    Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand

"This Watford v Cardiff game is like the old school headers & volleys. Percentage football it seems... Pressure at this stage of the season is telling."

  15. 1909:
FINAL FIVE- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

We're into the final five minutes as Vicarage Road tries to rally Watford. A goal seems unlikely - but I'll tempt footballing fate nonetheless.

  16.
    GET INVOLVED

George B: "People can say what they want about sacking Steve Kean. The fact is that he got Blackburn relegated. Hindsight is a wonderful thing."

  17.
    GET INVOLVED

Matt from Gwent via 81111: "I think the reason we've been quiet is because no Cardiff fan wants to count their chickens just yet... Hull and Watford are close behind."

  18. 1904:
    CLOSE!- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

More Cardiff pressure with Kim Bo-Kyung dragging his shot wide. Watford appear to be struggling, but they'll fancy their chances of hitting the visitors on the counter.

  19. 1903:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff are finishing strongly, with Craig Bellamy's curling shot from inside the area appearing to be on target before being deflected out of play by his team-mate Kim Bo-Kyung. Ten to go.

  20.
    GET INVOLVED

Dan Rees: "As a Cardiff fan, I think we'd survive. Strong young team, plus additions in the summer, would be enough for 17th in the Premier League."

  21. 1900:
YELLOW CARD- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Watford's Marco Cassetti goes into the book for a late tackle on Craig Bellamy. Not content with seeing his opponent booked, the Welsh striker gets up muttering. I reckon he could get all six numbers on the lottery and Bellamy would still find something to complain about.

  22.
Huddersfield striker James Vaughan after the 2-2 draw with relegation rivals Peterborough

"Felt like two points dropped today, however, at this stage every point counts! Go again next week and hopefully get the three points."

  23. 1857:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City
Watford's Matthew Briggs (centre) is challenged by Cardiff's Daniel Pudil and Craig Bellamy

We've around 15 minutes left in this one. I reckon Cardiff will take a point - but surely Watford would prefer all three? They are being restricted to long-range efforts at the moment though.

  24. 1855:
    EUROPEAN UPDATE

Juventus have gone 12 points clear at the top of Serie A with a 2-1 win over 10-man Pescara - Montenegrin striker Mirko Vucinic with both goals, who celebrated by taking his shorts off and wearing them over his head. Joker.

In La Liga,Real Madrid have thrashed Levante 5-1 with goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Kaka (penalty), Cristiano Ronaldo - obviously - and a Mesut Ozil brace. They are now 10 points behind leaders Barcelona.

  25. 1852:
YELLOW CARD- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Aron Gunnarsson goes into the book for a foul on Fernando Forestieri. The Watford striker dusts himself down and fires a rising volley just over the bar from the resulting free-kick.

  26.
    GET INVOLVED

Sam Robson: "I'm sure at one stage this season under Steve Kean Blackburn were second, now they're 22nd. Still right to sack him?"

C H Wallace-Jones: "Wherever Steve Kean is right now I bet he's kicking back with a pint in hand laughing."

  27. 1850:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

More frustration for Cardiff as Craig Conway fires well over the bar after Aron Gunnarsson's long throw had been cleared to him on the edge of the box.

  28. 1846:
GET INVOLVED- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff supporters, you have been quiet tonight. If you do get promoted, how do you expect to fare in the Premier League? We've got 30 minutes remaining in this match as Cardiff's Ben Turner heads wide after slack Watford defending.

  29. 1844:
    SUBSTITUTION- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Championship player of the year Matej Vydra is not going to be adding to his 22 goals today, being replaced by Fernando Forestieri.

  30. 1840:
PLAYER REACTION- Burnley 3-1 Bristol City

Bristol City goalscorer Albert Adomah: "I scored a goal and won a penalty for the team and if that had gone in the result could have been different and we might have come away with a point.

"If we had won then we could have kept up with the teams above us but it is not over yet and we have to stay positive because we still have five games to keep ourselves in this division."

  31. 1839:
GREAT SAVE!- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

A magnificent save from David Marshall, who turns Troy Deeney's six-yard header around the post after a good cross from the right by Joel Ekstrand. Top drawer from the Cardiff keeper.

  32. 1837:
MANAGER REACTION- Burnley 3-1 Bristol City

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "That was as dominant a display as I have seen from us this season. We had 25 efforts on goal and I very much enjoyed our performance.

"We played with good ingenuity, organisation and freedom and even when we found ourselves behind at half-time we stayed calm.

"I was really delighted with the way we went about our business but the madness of the Championship this season means that no-one can sit back and relax."

  33. 1835:
    SUBSTITUTION- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Watford make a change, with Jonathan Hogg replacing Cristian Battocchio. This game is still so finely poised, which is hardly surprising with so much at stake.

  34. 1831:
GREAT SAVE!- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

A good start to the second half by Cardiff, with Joe Mason getting clear of the Watford defence but being foiled by Manuel Almunia's save.

  35. 1828:
    KICK-OFF- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City
    Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay

I wonder what Cardiff manager Malky Mackay and Watford's Gianfranco Zola said to their players at half-time? We will soon find out if it has worked - we're back under way at Vicarage Road.

  36.
Norwich left-back Javier Garrido after the draw with Swansea

"Swansea have got good players and it is always hard to play against this team. The three points were close but unfortunately we got one. We can do it!"

  37.
    Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand

"Congratulations to Gillingham on promotion! Party time I hope for all associated!"

  38. 1823:
MANAGER REACTION- Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 Blackburn

Are Blackburn heading for another relegation? While you give me the answer to that, here's their caretaker manager Gary Bowyer after they slipped into the relegation zone with defeat to Sheffield Wednesday:

"We will not feel sorry for ourselves, we have six big games, including a game in hand, so it's in our hands," Bowyer said.

"The club has been in a difficult situation all season but it's not something I'm going to shirk. All I can control is on a game-by-game basis. We are in the bottom three but have six games to change that."

  39.
    GET INVOLVED

Acrosby6: "RE 1457: I wonder if Barnsley players wanted to swap shirts with Crystal Palace at full time?"

  40. 1820:
MANAGER REACTION- West Brom 1-2 Arsenal

West Brom manager Steve Clarke: "Anybody who watched today's game from the start would say if we got the equaliser it would have been thoroughly deserved.

"We can't keep conceding goals, especially against a team like Arsenal. We are still chasing 50 points down and that's what we want. We mentioned that earlier in the season as a realistic target. We're disappointed today but we will bounce back."

  41. 1814:
MANAGER REACTION- West Brom 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "It was very difficult in the end and we had to show another aspect of our strength at moment - resolve, spirit and fighting attitude. For a big part of the game we were in control, but in the last 20 minutes we had to show great spirit.

"The team is growing from game to game and they showed it again today. In the Premier League it's never as comfortable as it looks. I must give credit to West Brom - they were up for the fight, it was like a cup game today."

  42. 1812:

Fancy some more Premier League reaction? Of course you do - standby....

  43. 1810:
    HALF-TIME- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

BBC Sport's Neil Johnston: "There has been little to choose between the two teams in a cagey first half, chances few and far between in the battle between third and first in the Championship table. Watford finished the half strongly and Troy Deeney will feel he should have scored considering the form he has been in this season."

  44. 1808:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

There's some tasty challenges going in this afternoon, with Aron Gunnarsson's late tackle on Cristian Battocchio seeing the two benches clash - Gianfranco Zola's assistant having words with Malky Mackay. Calm down, boys.

  45. 1805:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Superb defending by Craig Bellamy, who is desperate to win promotion with this Cardiff side. He tracks back to deny Troy Deeney after the big striker had robbed Kevin McNaughton to bear down on goal.

  46. 1803:
WHAT A MISS- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

This game is bubbling nicely now. Watford's Matthew Briggs puts in a looping cross from the left, Matej Vydra appears to be on springs - or the defender's back - to head the ball down for Troy Deeney who blazes over from 10 yards out.

  47.
    GET INVOLVED

Ian in St Anne's via 81111: "Bolton were 20th about nine weeks ago. Now fighting for that last play off spot. The Championship is, indeed, a strange animal this season."

  48. 1759:
    EUROPEAN UPDATE

PSG have gone seven points clear at the top of Ligue 1 after a 2-0 victory at Rennes, Jeremy Menez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic with the goals.

In La Liga, Real Madrid lead Levante 2-1 at half-time, courtesy of goals from Gonzalo Higuain and a Kaka penalty.

Juventus are being held 0-0 at the break in Serie A - by bottom club Pescara.

  49. 1758:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

A good chance for Watford, who capitalise on a loose pass in the Cardiff midfield and Cristian Battocchio fires a swerving shot just wide.

  50. 1756:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

I've just checked out the age of Cardiff City's Kevin McNaughton. With his silver, Ravanelli-like hair, he is the oldest looking 30-year-old I have seen for a long time.

  51.
Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks on Final ScoreWest Brom 1-2 Arsenal

"Tottenham will be nervous after Arsenal's win. I do not think Spurs are good under pressure, Arsenal are better."

You can watch the programme on the BBC Sport website and BBC World now.

  52.
    GET INVOLVED

Mathew Phillips: "Heart says Hull to go up with Cardiff, but my head tells me Watford will edge it. Relegation... Take your pick."

  53. 1750:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Groans all around Vicarage Road as Watford catch Cardiff on the counter but the move breaks down because of Matej Vydra's poor pass.

  54.
    Football Focus presenter Dan Walker

"Not seen Matthew Lowton's goal. Waiting for a phonecall with Tony Yeboah's mum, Jeremy Goss' milkman & Clive Mendonca before the decision is made to call it a 'thronker'."

Dan, you can make your mind up by watching Lowton's wondrous strike on Match of the Day on BBC One at 2230 BST.

  55. 1747:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

A good Watford counter-attack, with Ikechi Anya racing down the right and his cross to the far post is cleared off the head of Matej Vydra by Kevin McNaughton. Top defending. At the other end, Craig Conway is allowed to run at the Watford defence and shoots wide.

  56.
Former Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin on Final ScoreStoke 1-3 Aston Villa

"If you have one way of playing, but that is not working well, you must find another way.

"Stoke like to compete for the ball and get it up the pitch. There was no energy or fight today, however; What do they do now?"

You can watch the programme on the BBC Sport website and BBC World now.

  57. 1744:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff are starting to get about Watford now, with Craig Bellamy racing into the box but being stopped in his tracks by Marco Cassetti. That's much better defending by the 35-year-old.

  58.
    GET INVOLVED

Shayan: "RE 17 30: If Gianfranco Zola wins tonight, Roy Hodgson will be joined by Roman Abramovich at the next Watford game!"

Luke: "Hull and Cardiff to go up, Watford win the playoffs... Bristol City, Blackburn and Millwall to go down."

  59. 1742:
GREAT SAVE!- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff's Kim Bo-Kyung gets free down the right, skips past the lazy challenges of Watford's Matthew Briggs and Marco Cassetti and his low, angled shot is saved by Manuel Almunia. A warning for the Hornets.

  60.
Arsenal attacker Lukas Podoloski after the win at West Brom

"Well done, three points!!! On the way back home."

  61.
    GET INVOLVED

Adam via 81111: "If Roy Hodgson's got any sense, he's scouting Nathaniel Chalobah. Class act and future England captain."

  62. 1739:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

These two are like two prized heavyweights, testing each other out early on - waiting for the other to drop their guard. There's been no real chances for either side to get excited about in the first 15 minutes.

  63.
BBC Sport's Damian Johnson at Britannia StadiumStoke 1-3 Aston Villa

"Matthew Lowton says his stunning volley which helped Aston Villa beat Stoke City is the best of his career."

  64. 1734:
    SUBSTITUTION- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff are forced into a change after Matthew Connolly picks up an early knock, to be replaced by Kevin McNaughton.

  65. 1732:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff's Aron Gunnarsson gets his first opportunity to wind up his long throw but the Watford defence deals well with the threat. From the next attack, Craig Bellamy, sporting a questionable haircut, puts in a cross from the right but it's too close to the keeper.

  66. 1730:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

England managers past (Graham Taylor) and present (Roy Hodgson) are in the Vicarage Road stands this evening. Who might Roy be scouting?

  67.
Former Stoke striker Garth Crooks on Final ScoreStoke 1-3 Aston Villa

"When I listen to manager Tony Pulis's analysis, what was missing is the fact that Stoke are not playing well.

"Previously, you used to be in a battle when you played Stoke. Not anymore.

"They were not challenging for balls or squeezing the play. They must get their confidence back."

You can watch the programme on the Red Button, BBC HD Channel and BBC Sport website now.

  68. 1728:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff's Kim Bo-Kyung manages to send in a couple of good crosses from the right but Watford clear the danger. The home support is in good voice tonight - these late kick-offs in the evening sunshine are always good.

  69. 1726:
    EUROPEAN UPDATE

In Ligue 1, Jeremy Menez has put PSG 1-0 up at Rennes, and a victory will allow Carlo Ancelotti's side to go seven points clear at the top of the table.

Juventus are still goalless against Pescara in Serie A, while in La Liga,Real Sociedad beat Malaga 4-2 to go four points clear of their opponents in fourth place.

  70.
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker

"The Match of the Day running order: Stoke/Villa, West Brom/Arsenal, Norwich/Swansea, Reading/Saints. Four belting games."

Watch highlights of the day's Premier League action on BBC One at 2230 BST.

  71. 1725:
    Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

Watford are doing the early pressing and Troy Deeney almost wriggles clear in the box before Cardiff clear the danger. He and Matej Vydra will be big threats today.

  72.
    GET INVOLVED

Will Wogan: "Barnsley to stay up again this year, they're the Wigan of the Championship doing it time and time again!"

  73. 1723:
    KICK-OFF- Watford 0-0 Cardiff City

We are under way at Vicarage Road. I'm looking forward to this one - two very good teams in action.

  74. 1722:
    Watford v Cardiff City

Watford boss Gianfranco Zola, speaking before kick-off: "I'm expecting my players to have a lot of confidence after winning in midweek but it's going to be difficult because we are playing against the top team."

  75.
    GET INVOLVED

Karl Lawson: "Arsene Wenger sounds like Andre Villas-Boas with that sore throat."

  76.
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty

"Bit worried Stoke have gone into deep decline since I stood up for them after win v Liverpool. The Minus Touch. Still think they'll stay up."

  77. 1721:
MANAGER REACTION- Stoke 1-3 Aston Villa

Stoke manager Tony Pulis: "We are disappointed. I thought we started well and the first time they get in our box they score. From that point onwards Villa created the better chances in the game.

"It is important we stay in the Premier League. We need a point a game and it is important the lads stay confident. We have United, Tottenham, Norwich at home and then tough games away from home too. We have played well away so it is a good test for everyone at the football club now."

  78. 1719:
Watford v Cardiff City (1720 BST)

The players are making their way on to the pitch at Vicarage Road. Will it be Cardiff or Watford who take one step closer to promotion to the Premier League?

  79. 1718:
    FOOTBALL LEAGUE

In League Two, the big story is Gillingham's promotion as the league leaders beat Torquay at home while Bradford beat Northampton and Morecambe beat Rotherham. Exeter's defeat against Dagenham and Redbridge means Bradford are just two points off the play-offs. At the bottom, Accrington came from behind to draw with York and keep the Minstermen in the bottom three as Plymouth pulled away with a win at home to promotion-chasing Cheltenham.

  80.
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty

"Brilliant win for Aston Villa at Stoke which has pulled Tony Pulis' side right into it. And another big win for Arsenal at WBA."

  81. 1715:
    GET INVOLVED

We're five minutes away from kick-off in the Championship's big game. I'm keen to hear from supporters of all Championship clubs. In a nutshell, who is going up and who is going down?

  82. 1714:
    LINE-UPS- Watford v Cardiff City (1720 BST)

Watford: Almunia, Doyley, Cassetti, Ekstrand, Abdi, Battocchio, Chalobah, Briggs, Anya, Deeney, Vydra. Subs: Bond, Yeates, Hogg, Pudil, Thompson, Geijo, Forestieri.

  83.
    GET INVOLVED

Joe Harbert: "That's four wins in a row now for the Gunners. Shows the spirit we have at the moment!"

  84. 1713:
    FOOTBALL LEAGUE

In League One, Doncaster are assured of at least a play-off spot as they beat Tranmere 1-0 but their lead at the top remains two points as Bournemouth came from behind to beat Notts County. At the bottom, Hartlepool live to fight another day after a win at home to Bury spares them relegation for another week with Oldham losing to Carlisle and Scunthorpe beaten away at Preston.

  85.
Former Stoke striker Garth Crooks on Final Score

"I could not believed Grant Holt stayed on the pitch for Norwich [see 1644]. There was no way he intended to win the ball, he went to intimidate Chico, that is my analysis of his tackle.

"How did he not even get booked for that incident?"

You can watch the programme on the Red Button, BBC HD Channel and BBC Sport website now.

  86. 1711:
Watford v Cardiff City (1720 BST)

BBC Sport's Neil Johnston: "This is as big as it gets outside the Premier League. Win this and Championship leaders Cardiff are three victories away from the top-flight, while a Watford win will lift Gianfranco Zola's men to within five points of the summit with five games to play.

"All eyes will be on Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay, who played and managed Watford before being lured to Wales in June 2011. Watford have failed to win their last two league games at Vicarage Road but Mackay will be wary of the threat posed by Czech Republic striker Matej Vydra, who has netted 20 league goals for the Hornets this season."

  87. 1710:
    FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The big result in the Championship saw Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackburn 3-2 at Hillsborough which means the Lancashire side are now in the bottom three. Huddersfield were held at home to Peterborough thanks to Dwight Gale's late strike but the Terriers are still out of the drop zone.

In the play-off race, Kazenga LuaLua scored late to earn Brighton a draw against Leicester and Bolton beat Wolves. At the top, Hull beat Middlesbrough to close the gap on leaders Cardiff to four points with the Bluebirds in action at 1720 BST against Watford.

  88.
MOTD's Guy Mowbray at the Britannia StadiumStoke 1-3 Aston Villa

"Aston Villa have thrown away so many games from winning positions but then came that goal from Matthew Lowton, which was a fantastic strike. Christian Benteke added to the Villa party and they were worthy winners."

  89.
MOTD's Steve Bower at The HawthornsWest Brom 1-2 Arsenal

"A vital win for Arsenal, who scored twice through Tomas Rosicky but then had to play for half an hour with 10 men as West Brom pulled a goal back and pressed hard for an equaliser. The Gunners move up to fourth."

  90.
    GET INVOLVED

Clem Teagle: "Sat in Sheffield University's library and can practically hear the sigh of relief coming from Hillsborough from here."

  91. 1707:
MANAGER REACTION- Stoke 1-3 Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: "It was thoroughly deserved. We looked terrific from the off. I thought we defended really strongly and football-wise I thought we were excellent. Every time we went forward I thought we looked threatening.

"I don't think you will see a better goal in Europe let alone anywhere else than Matt Lowton's. The technique, chest control and volley was outstanding. He has played every minute of every game in the league and he has been outstanding.

"We are playing well. There is a lot of momentum there and collectively the players are doing fantastically."

  92. 1705:
    Norwich 2-2 Swansea

Match of the Day's Martin Fisher: "Norwich boss Chris Hughton is forced to settle for another point at home - but it could have been worse. Michu was presented with a glorious chance to win an entertaining game for Swansea in stoppage time but blazed over from seven yards. This point could still make all the difference at the end of the season for the Canaries."

  93.
    GET INVOLVED

Ellison Reed: "So Stoke's long ball technique doesn't work anymore... What are they going to do now?"

  94. 1704:
    SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Celtic are not yet Scottish Premier League champions but Neil Lennon's side are all but winners with a 15-point lead and a vastly superior goal difference over Motherwell.

Hibs lost 3-0 at Celtic Park to end their hopes of finishing in the SPL's top six.

The final top-half place went to Dundee United in dramatic fashion with Rory Boulding scoring an injury-time winner against Aberdeen. That win, coupled with Kilmarnock's defeat by bottom club Dundee, allowed United to move up to sixth just in time for the split.

Dundee have reduced their deficit to 13 points but still look on their way down to the First Division.

The SPL post-split fixtures will be announced on Monday and the division will resume in a fortnight with Scottish Cup semi-finals taking place next weekend.

A truly stunning goal for Lowton helped earn Villa a vital three points. Could well be goal of the season."

  97. 1701:
    Stoke 1-3 Aston Villa

Even if Matthew Lowton plays in the Premier League for another 10 seasons, he will never score a better - and more important - goal than that one today. It's worth watching Match of the Day at 2230 BST, that's for sure.

  98. 1659:
    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The final whistle at the Britannia Stadium brings joy for Aston Villa and despair for Stoke. Matthew Lowton and Christian Benteke's late goals move Villa three points clear of the relegation zone and into 16th place. Wigan and Sunderland play on Sunday - and if they both win then Villa will drop back into the bottom three.

Indeed, if the Latics beat second bottom Queens Park Rangers and fellow strugglers Sunderland shock Chelsea, then Stoke's alarming slump in form will see them finish the weekend just one point outside the bottom three.

At Carrow Road, Luke Moore's 75th-minute equaliser for Swansea means Norwich blew a great chance to move within one win of the 40-point mark that usually secures Premier League safety.

At the other end of the table, Arsenal survived a red card for centre-back Per Mertesacker to move back into the Champions League qualifying spots for 24 hours at least, one point ahead of Chelsea, thanks to Tomas Rosicky's double.

Michu's terrible miss is the last real action of a pulsating match at Carrow Road. A vital point for Norwich, who will be gutted not to take all three.

  102. 1653:

Incredible miss by Michu, of all people. The Spaniard has a chance to earn Swansea all three points but skies over the bar from seven-yards out and with the Norwich defence all at sea. Sighs of relief all around Carrow Road.

  105. 1652:
    YELLOW CARD- Norwich 2-2 Swansea

It has been blood and thunder stuff at Carrow Road. Jonathan de Guzman has just sent Norwich's Kei Kamara sprawling - the seventh booking of the game.

  107. 1650:

  128. 1635:
GOAL- Stoke 1-1 Aston Villa - Michael Kightly (80 mins)

What a crucial goal this could prove to be. Jonathan Walters gives Matthew Lowton the slip on the left, Charlie Adam helps the ball across the box and Michael Kightly is on hand to hammer the ball home from 10 yards out. The Potters are buoyant now with 10 minutes to go.

  132. 1630:
WHAT A MISS- Stoke 0-1 Aston Villa

Stoke have a rare chance. Cameron Jerome pulls the ball back for fellow striker Kenwyne Jones, who horribly mis-times his shot. That sums up Stoke's day really. Soon after, Jones and Jon Walters share some angry words - never a good sign for a team up against it.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As it stands, there are contrasting feelings at the Britannia Stadium as Gabriel Agbonlahor's goal moves Aston Villa - temporarily at least with Wigan not playing until Sunday - three points clear of the relegation zone in 16th place.

In the other dug out, manager Tony Pulis cuts a more anxious figure. If the scoreline stays the same, and the Latics beat second bottom Queens Park Rangers and fellow strugglers Sunderland shock Chelsea on Sunday, Stoke will finish the weekend just one point outside the bottom three.

Robert Snodgrass's leveller for Norwich against Swansea means they are currently on course to be a point better off than the Potters having played the same amount of games.

YELLOW CARD- West Brom 0-1 Arsenal

Tomas Rosicky, who gave Arsenal the lead at The Hawthorns, is booked for a late tackle on James Morrison.

Former Stoke striker Garth Crooks on Final Score

"If I could see the danger watching the monitor, why couldn't the Norwich defence? Michu had far too much time to take a touch in the six-yard box.

"They should have known Michu is by far Swansea's most dangerous player."

GOAL- Norwich 0-1 Swansea - Michu (35 mins)

Lovely stuff from Swansea and another clinical finish from that man Michu. He's playing in a deeper role today but the end result is much the same as he meets Jonathan De Guzman's drag-back and smashes it into the roof of the net.

It is all getting a little bit scrappy at Carrow Road. Norwich's Bradley Johnson has been deservedly booked for a cynical foul on Michu - moments after Roberto Snodgrass was also cautioned for bringing down Dwight Tiendalli. The Canaries have made a disjointed start but Swansea cannot find the breakthrough.

  193. 1532:
HITS THE WOODWORK- Stoke 0-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor releases fellow forward Andreas Weimann through on goal but the Austrian's shot comes back of the foot of the post, with Potters keeper Asmir Begovic looking to have got the slightest of touches.

  194. 1531:
    FOOTBALL LEAGUE

In the Championship, Blackburn's lead at Hillsborough has lasted just eight minutes as Jermaine Johnson's low shot pulls Sheffield Wednesday level after Jordan Rhodes' penalty put Rovers ahead. The only other ground that has seen goals is the Reebok Stadium where hosts Bolton lead Wolves.

In League One, Matt Ritchie and Brett Pitman have put automatic-promotion chasing Bournemouth ahead against Notts County while Stephen McGinn has brought Shrewsbury level at Yeovil who are trying to close the gap on Bournemouth. Colchester are two up against Leyton Orient.

  203. 1523:
    EUROPEAN UPDATE

Deary me. The title race in the Bundesliga may well be all but over now. Dortmund concede two goals on the stroke of half-time and go in at the break 2-1 down at home to Augsburg. Bayern still 0-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt, but remember, they only need a point to clinch the title if Dortmund do not win.

Must mention an important game taking place in La Liga at the moment, 20 minutes gone between Real Sociedad and Malaga, still 0-0 but the home are currently in fourth place - a Champions League spot - a mere one point ahead of today's opponents who are in fifth. All to play for!

  204. 1520:

  208. 1518:
    SUBSTITUTION- Norwich 0-0 Swansea

Norwich goalkeeper Mark Bunn, back in the side after suspension, is in trouble at Carrow Road. The former Blackburn keeper has hobbled off with a suspected hamstring injury and with the Canaries without first-choice John Ruddy due to a hip problem, Lee Camp has come on for his home debut.

Dorus De Vries fails to hold Craig Dawson's attempt and the Trotters striker pounced to put them ahead before Marco Alonso doubled their lead. A Jordan Rhodes penalty has put Blackburn ahead against fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday.

In League One, second-placed Bournemouth have fallen behind to Notts County early on with Jeff Hughes putting the visitors ahead. Liam Noble has put Carlisle ahead against relegation-threatened Oldham.

  215. 1512:
    DISALLOWED GOAL- Norwich 0-0 Swansea

Swansea have won just once since winning the League Cup in February yet Michael Laudrup's side have started brightly at Carrow Road. After Michu fired wide in the opening exchanges, the Spaniard set up a chance for Luke Moore which brought the game's first save from Mark Bunn. Michu has also found the net but the effort was ruled out for a foul. It is all Swansea.

  216.

  251. 1438:
    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reading's 2-0 defeat to Southampton gives Aston Villa extra motivation at Stoke as victory will move them 10 points above Nigel Adkins's Royals, as well as lifting them - temporarily at least with Wigan not playing until Sunday - out of the relegation zone.

Stoke can follow in Southampton's footsteps and all but secure their Premier League status if they can come out on top at the Britannia Stadium. Norwich can similarly move onto a nerve-steadying 37 points with a win against Swansea.

Matt in Telford via 81111: "Reading are so far adrift they need a rescue boat. Unfortunately for them, I don't think Hal Robson-Canoe will help."

  276.
Former England defender Martin Keown at Madejski Stadium

"Southampton are taking the legs out of Reading as they force them to chase the ball relentlessly. Southampton's possession will be tiring their opponents out."

  277. 1412:
    Reading 0-1 Southampton

Reading just can't get the ball off Southampton now - they look distinctly second best. Nigel Adkins must be so frustrated to see a team he built being so dominant against his new side.

  278. 1411:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Norwich v Swansea (1500 BST)

Grant Holt is once again named on the bench for Norwich ahead of their game against Swansea.

Will Dinsdale: "No desire from Reading, barely chasing the ball and Southampton knocking it around beautifully now."

Shohidur Rahman: "Heskey played for England 62 times but Lambert can't get a single cap. Right....."

  280. 1409:
    Reading 0-1 Southampton

Rickie Lambert is pulling the strings like a master puppeteer - his latest pass from the top drawer almost playing in Jay Rodriguez's for Southampton's second.

  281. 1407:
    Reading 0-1 Southampton

Reading's goal is living a charmed live now, with Morgan Schneiderlin taking an air-shot six yards out which could have doubled Southampton's lead.

  282. 1407:
BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Stoke v Aston Villa (1500 BST)

Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones comes into the starting XI as one of three changes. He replaces Peter Crouch.

  283. 1406:
    SUBSTITUTION- Reading 0-1 Southampton

Southampton make a change too, with Adam Lallana coming on for Gaston Ramirez.

  284.
Former England defender Martin Keown at Madejski Stadium

"Great movement again there (1402). Southampton are full of imagination.

"You contrast that to Reading, who are only playing hopeful passes and they can barely string two passes together

"At top level football, you are exhausted due to the levels of concentration required. Southampton's intelligent movement will be tiring Reading out."

  285.
    Daily Mirror journalist Ed Malyon

"Referee Kevin Stroud has decided Barnsley's kit is too similar to Crystal Palace's, so Barnsley will wear Palace's away kit. Absolutely brilliant."

  286. 1405:
    SUBSTITUTION- Reading 0-1 Southampton

A half-chance for Reading but Adam Le Fondre struggles to make it count when the ball lands at his feet on the edge of the box and the former Rotherham striker puts his effort into the stands. Reading being on Garath McCleary for Danny Guthrie.

  287. 1402:
    Reading 0-1 Southampton

There's 30 minutes left in this game as Hal Robson-Kanu wins a corner through sheer persistence. However, it comes to nothing and is hacked away by Southampton. Saints continue to strike on the counter and Rickie Lambert almost slides in Jay Rodriguez's cross after starting the move himself in midfield. A class act.

  288. 1400:
    Reading 0-1 Southampton

A stroke of luck for Southampton's Artur Boruc, who fails to gather a corner but the ball rebounds off Hal Robson-Kanu at the far post back into the keeper's grateful hands.

Ben Foley: "Dare I say that Rickie Lambert is better than Wayne Rooney this season?"

Andrew Musgrove: "If Jay Rodriquez is a shout for England with 5 league goals, then Ricky Lambert must be the foundation..."

David in Worcestershire via 81111: "QPR and Reading are doomed, no matter what happens this weekend. If you get 23 points from 31 games, you aren't going to get 17 from the last seven, however good your manager is."

  291. 1358:
    Reading 0-1 Southampton

Pavel Pogrebnyak is going through his warm-up routines on the sidelines. He might give Reading a different, more threatening option, up front.

  292.
Former England defender Martin Keown at Madejski Stadium

"It is all two-touch from Southampton. They control it, pass it, and move.

"Every time they win the ball off Reading, they look to break. They manage the ball very well and build-up in a controlled manner through the team."

Listen to commentary of Reading v Southampton on BBC Radio 5 live now.

  293. 1356:
    SCOTTISH PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST

Hearts run out winners against Ross County but the 4-2 scoreline seemed unlikely only half an hour ago. Should Dundee lose and St Mirren avoid defeat the former will be relegated today.

  294. 1356:
    CLOSE!- Reading 0-1 Southampton
Adrian Mariappa of Reading (right) holds off Southampton's Jay Rodriguez

Rickie Lambert slices open the Southampton defence with another cracking pass but Adam Federici manages to save Steven Davis's effort. I've been impressed with Mauricio Pochettino's Saints side today.

  295.
    GET INVOLVED

Oliver Morar: "I think Jay Rodriguez is a good shout for England."

  296. 1353:
    Reading 0-1 Southampton

Like in the first half, Reading are enjoying plenty of possession without having any penetration in the final third. Danny Guthrie's shot is charged down and Southampton try to launch another counter without success.
