As it happened

  1. 1929:

A very warm welcome to BBC Scotland's live text coverage of the Scottish Premier League game between Hearts and St Johnstone at Tynecastle.

  2. 1930:

Hearts: MacDonald, Mullen, Webster, Wilson, McHattie, Stevenson, Barr, Taouil, Novikovas, Sutton, Ngoo. Subs: Ridgers, Prychynenko, Holt, Tapping, Walker, Carrick, G. Smith.

  3. 1931:

St Johnstone: Mannus, C Davidson, Cregg, Wright, Abeid, Mackay, M. Davidson, McCracken, Vine, Craig, MacLean. Subs: Tuffey, Hasselbaink, Anderson, C Millar, Tade, Caddis, Edwards

  4. 1932:

Hearts interim manager Gary Locke: "We are not looking to change too much, apart from the results. We've had to make a couple of enforced changes tonight with injuries but we just hope to get off to a better start than we did on Saturday. It's been a bit of a whirlwind. I'm interim manager at the moment, trying my best to get the club a much-needed victory."

  5. 1939:

The kick-off at Tynecastle is at 19:45 GMT. In the meantime, let's be hearing your thoughts on the game and other Scottish football news by text to 80295 or on Twitter using the hashtag #bbcsportscot.

  6. 1940:

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston: "If St Johnstone can qualify for Europe again, then what a wonderful season Steve Lomas will have had."

  7. 1944:

So, what has Gary Locke done with his line-up this evening? Well, he has made two changes with Fraser Mullen in at right-back after Dylan McGowan suffered a knock against Motherwell, while Arvydas Novikovas replaces Callum Tapping in midfield.

  8. 1944:

As for Saints boss Steve Lomas, left-back Callum Davidson replaces Tam Scobbie after recovering from illness while his midfield namesake Murray is back from suspension to replace Chris Millar.

  9. 1945:

    Here we go!

  10. 1947:

Saints striker Rowan Vine cuts inside from the left, beats Fraser Mullan and arrows a shot over the bar. Surely not another bad start for the Jambos?

  11. 1948:

Vine has the Hearts defence in a tangle and he tests home keeper Jamie MacDonald with a shot. Are Hearts asleep?!

  12. 1949:

BBC Radio Scotland summariser Peter Houston: "Hearts will be nervous. They lost two in the first eight minutes on Saturday."

  13. 1951:

Hearts striker John Sutton heads just over the bar in the home team's first attacking move.

  14. 1952:

Just prior to big Sutton's header, BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston made a good point: that when your confidence is low, there's the temptation just to launch the ball up to the big guys up front, in Hearts' case 6ft 2in Sutton or 6ft 7in Michael Ngoo.

  15. 1955:

Optimistic Fraser: "A win tonight for Hearts then a victory on Sunday against Hibs, puts us 3 pts behind Hibs. With all that is going on at Hearts, pretty good season and we may win league cup. Brilliant crop of youngsters. The future is maroon."

  16. 1957:

Hearts striker John Sutton is ruled offside after knocking the ball over the Saints line at the back post. A bad decision by the referee or poor judgement by the big striker?

  17. 1959:

Some good news for Morton fans. The Ton are leading Hamilton 1-0 thanks to David O'Brien's goal.

  18. 1959:

In the other First Division match it's Falkirk 0-0 Raith Rovers.

  19. 2001:

The ever-impressive Murray Davidson, back in the Saints team after suspension, gets on the end of a move and pings a shot at the Hearts goal. Jamie MacDonald makes a decent save.

  20. 2002:

Alan Mannus denies Hearts striker John Sutton from close range as the big Englishman tries to lift the ball over the Northern Irish keeper.

  21. 2004:

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston on keeper Alan Mannus: "He is a really good shot-stopper. He has done exceptionally well for St Johnstone."

  22. 2006:

In the Second Division it's Albion Rovers 2-0 Stenhousemuir and Ayr 0-0 Brechin.

  23. 2007:

Young Hearts defender Fraser Mullen is booked for a tackle on Murray Davidson.

  24. 2009:

Here's me confusing Allans Moore and Preston...

  25. 2011:

Time for a quick score update in the Third Division: It's and Berwick Rangers 0-0 Stirling Albion and Elgin 0-2 Queen's Park.

  26. 2012:

Frazer Wright concedes a corner to Hearts after good defensive work against the towering striker Michael Ngoo.

  27. 2014:

Hearts winger Arvydas Novikovas attempts a highly technical manoeuvre - a corner kick - and knocks it out of play well before it had reached the Saints goal. Commentator Allan Preston describes it as one of the worst he has ever seen!

  28. 2016:

You have to take your hat off to the fans who have paid in tonight at Tynecastle. With a big Champions League match on the telly, that is the mark of a true supporter. And, of course, it's especially helpful to Hearts' limited bank balance.

  29. 2017:

    Falkirk 0-1 Raith Rovers (Graham)

  30. 2017:

Hearts 1-0 St Johnstone (Stevenson) Ryan Stevenson scores the fourth goal of his second spell at Tynecastle, following up to knock the ball into an empty net after Alan Mannus had denied Michael Ngoo.

  31. 2020:

BBC Radio Scotland summariser Peter Houston: "Hearts could have been two goals down, but they have stuck at it. They have worked very, very hard as a team."

  32. 2022:

Hearts launch a counter attack down the left wing and Michael Ngoo curls a shot just wide of the target.

  33. 2023:

    Hamilton 1-1 Morton (Fisher)

  34. 2026:

Steve Lomas makes a change: Gregory Tade comes on to replace Mehdi Abeid, who is none too happy to be subbed.

  35. 2027:

And Gregory Tade almost makes an immediate impact, his shot producing a save by Hearts goalie Jamie MacDonald.

  36. 2028:

And Michael Ngoo again goes close, the on-loan Liverpool man firing narrowly wide of Alan Mannus's goal.

  37. 2030:

And yet again Michael Ngoo troubles the Saints defence, his pace taking him past Alan Mannus but, agonisingly for the home fans, he just cannot wrap his foot round the ball to belt it over the line.

  38. 2031:

I think we're seeing a pattern here. Michael Ngoo brushes Paddy Cregg aside and smacks a shot straight at Alan Mannus. If they keep this up, I may need to assign Ngoo and Cregg to a special function key on my PC to save me typing their names.

  39. 2032:

    Hearts 1-0 St Johnstone

  40. 2035:

Well, that was good stuff at Tynecastle. What a boost that will be for Gary Locke. You could tell in his interviews this week just how much he wanted a win. I wonder if he'll get it.

  41. 2040:

    First Division:

    Falkirk 0-1 Raith Rovers

    Hamilton 1-1 Morton

    Second Division:

    Albion Rovers 2-0 Stenhousemuir

    Ayr United 0-1 Brechin

    Third Division:

    Berwick 0-0 Stirling Albion

    Elgin 0-3 Queen's Park

  42. 2042:

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston: "When I have seen Alan Mannus play this season he has made save after save and kept St Johnstone in games at times."

  43. 2045:

We're under way again at Tynecastle. A change for St Johnstone - Frazer Wright is off and in comes Steven Anderson.

  44. 2047:

Dave Mackay's free-kick goes narrowly over Jamie MacDonald's bar. Saints need to score two goals and make sure they don't concede another if they want to be third in the SPL tonight.

  45. 2050:

A few people are asking about the erroneous SPL fixture showing on parts of our website as being played this evening. In fact, Dundee v St Mirren is on Wednesday night. The match was moved to tomorrow but appears twice in our listings.

  46. 2053:

A quartet of Hearts players - Michael Ngoo, Ryan Stevenson, Andy Webster and John Sutton - are left frustrated as none of them can get on the end of a ball into the box. Those are four big guys to have lurking around your penalty box.

  47. 2055:

Looking ahead to Celtic's match against Juventus in Turin tomorrow evening, here's what manager Neil Lennon had to say about the tie, which stands at 3-0 to the Italians from the first leg: "We are capable of winning the game and that's what we'd like to do.

"The pressure's really off. We'll try and restore some respectability in the tie. However, to qualify would take a minor miracle."

  48. 2057:

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston: "St Johnstone are keeping possession well but they cannot go anywhere because of the defensive work of the front two of Hearts."

  49. 2059:

Darren Barr is booked by referee John Beaton for a foul on Murray Davidson. The Hearts fans are very unhappy about that.

  50. 2101:

    Hamilton 2-1 Morton (Gordon)

  51. 2102:

Callum Davidson goes into the book for a bad tackle on Hearts striker Michael Ngoo.

  52. 2106:

Stereotype alert... That goal by Hamilton's Ziggy Gordon against Morton will surely have Partick Thistle fans stomping around their theatre dressing rooms, garrets and student bedsits.

  53. 2107:

Anyway, at Tynecastle John Sutton's flick is met by Michael Ngoo - who else? - and he volleys just wide of the target.

  54. 2111:

What a chance for St Johnstone! Murray Davidson heads Liam Craig's free kick a fraction wide. That's a warning for Hearts.

  55. 2111:

At the other end, Fraser Mullen takes a free kick that deflects from the defensive wall to Michael Ngoo in the box but he puts his effort wide.

  56. 2113:

Mehdi Taouil blazes a Hearts free-kick high over Alan Mannus's crossbar.

  57. 2114:

Hearts' experienced defender Andy Webster scoops Nigel Hasselbaink's header off the line. Chances at both ends. This is good stuff!

  58. 2117:

Hearts make a change with quarter of an hour to go. Mehdi Taouil goes off and Jason Holt is on.

  59. 2118:

The attendance at Tynecastle tonight is 10,080.

  60. 2119:

BBC Radio Scotland summariser Peter Houston: "St Johnstone look as if they are playing with four up front now."

  61. 2120:

In the First Division, Falkirk are 1-0 down at home to Raith Rovers and Hamilton are 2-1 up on promotion-chasing Morton.

  62. 2121:

In the Second Division, Albion Rovers are 4-1 up on Stenhousemuir and Ayr are losing 2-1 at home to Brechin.

  63. 2122:

Hearts 2-0 St Johnstone (Sutton) Michael Ngoo chases down a lost cause, collects the ball, holds off Steven Anderson and sets up John Sutton to score the Jambos' second.

  64. 2125:

In the Third Division, Berwick and Stirling are locked at 0-0 and Queen's Park are leading Elgin 5-2 away from home.

  65. 2126:

BBC Scotland football pundit Allan Preston: "Hearts could probably take off John Sutton now. He has got his goal. He looks absolutely knackered. I'd take him off."

  66. 2126:

Gregory Tade's overhead kick is deflected on its way into the Hearts net but is ruled offside.

  67. 2127:

Is Gary Locke listening to Allan Preston? John Sutton is given a standing ovation as he leaves the field to be replaced by Gordon Smith.

  68. 2129:

We're into the final minute of normal time. What a great feeling this must be for the home fans after their awful run of defeats.

  69. 2130:

Three minutes of added time at Tynecastle.

  70. 2132:

Assuming there is no incredible final minute or so, Hearts will have moved above St Mirren into 10th place in the SPL.

  71. 2133:

    Hearts 2-0 St Johnstone

  72. 2134:

Falkirk have pulled level at home to Raith Rovers.

  73. 2137:

Let's hope we can hear from Gary Locke and Steve Lomas in the next few minutes.

  74. 2139:

    First Division:

    Falkirk 1-1 Raith Rovers

    Second Division:

    Albion Rovers 4-3 Stenhousemuir

    Third Division:

    Berwick 1-0 Stirling Albion

    Elgin 3-5 Queen's Park

  75. 2141:

Hearts interim manager Gary Locke: "That win was for John McGlynn as well. That is the type of performance that we need all the time. If we play like that until the end of the season I am sure we will pick up points. We are over the moon to get a victory at last."

  76. 2141:

Gary Locke continued: "Hopefully that victory tonight will give us the confidence to push on. If a new manager comes in, then great. If one doesn't come in and they ask me to take the derby, I'm happy with that as well. The club has an unbelievable history."

  77. 2143:

    First Division:

    Hamilton 2-1 Morton

    Second Division:

    Ayr 1-2 Brechin

  78. 2146:

St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas: "It's the first time since I've been here that we have lost every individual battle. You don't win a game like that. We let our supporters down tonight. We've got to take it on the chin."

  79. 2146:

Steve Lomas continued: "I go back to it again - you've got to win those individual battles. We'd need another six points [for the top six] friom three games. We'll go away and lick our wounds."

  80. 2150:

Well done to Gary Locke and to Hearts this evening. We'll have highlights of the game on the BBC Sport website tomorrow. Look out for all the match reaction on the site in the next half hour or so. Thanks for your company tonight. All the best.
