That is your lot for tonight though. It has been eventful. Thanks for all your messages and catch you next time. Over and out.
-
2251:
Cristiano Ronaldo to Sky Sports: "The reception was unbelievable. It was an emotional moment for me, for both games, especially tonight.
"I do not have words to explain how I feel. The supporters made me feel shy as I did not play how I play all the time.
"Anyway I helped my team, and I feel a little happy inside, on the other hand I feel sad as Manchester United are out.
"To be honest I did not see what Nani did, but these situations happen in football.
"The future we never know, but the supporters here and the club are massive. At this moment I am very happy in Madrid and I want to be there."
-
2250:
We'll leave you with the words of Cristiano Ronaldo though who has just been chatting with Sky Sports.
-
2245:
The recriminations have only just begun. Real Madrid won't be losing too much sleep on Nani's red card, they have a tenth European Cup to win. They and a classy Borussia Dortmund side are the first teams into the last eight.
Juventus are overwhelming favourites to join them tomorrow with a 3-0 aggregate lead over Celtic. while Paris St-Germain have a one-goal advantage over Valencia. Tom Rostance will guide you through those events.
-
2238:
Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir was taking charge of his third Manchester United match tonight. His previous two passed off without attracting much attention - a defeat against Athletic Bilbao in last season's Europa League after a Champions League draw with Benfica in 2011.
However the Turk sent off Chelsea captain John Terry against Barcelona in last year's semi-final second leg at the Camp Nou, and dimissed Mario Balotelli in Manchester City's 1-0 win over Dinamo Kiev in 2011.

John Neild: "Fergie's team need to understand the home team doesn't always get all the decisions. For me the ref had a good game (genuinely)"
Jordan McDonald: "I'm sorry but kicking someone in the rib cage is a red card!"
-
2232:
The backlash to the backlash has started on Twitter though...
-
Press Association's chief sports reporter Martyn Ziegler: "United players walk through mixed zone grim-faced and silent. "We are not allowed to say anything" says Nani."
-
2227:
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan: "I think it was a disappointing decision, I think it spoilt the game, we have to move on. I have said it before, to play Real Madrid on a magnificent occasion, with a massive audience around the world and everyone will be sitting wondering what has happened. A great performance was marred by one decision."
-
2227:
Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso on Sky Sports: ""It was a difficult decision to take from the referee, but we have seen in many previous games that it can be harder playing against 10-men. We produced our best minutes after the sending off.
"After that, United pushed really hard and it was difficult not to concede and our goalkeeper was fantastic.
"We knew it was a key week for us, we were fighting, it was make or break. It has gone fantastically."
-
2226:
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Sky Sports: "My feeling is that Manchester United were playing very well, were very compact and aggressive in a good way.
"They were very tactically well organised and the match was very difficult for us. I had the feeling Luka Modric changed the game as he brought qualities we did not have before.
"I doubt that 11 v 11 we win the match. Today I am frustrated as we played so well against Barcelona and today, I was waiting for more.
"I know Manchester United are giants, not just physically but mentally. I know they have a manager who can motivate then, but I was waiting for us to play in a different way."
-
2225:
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan: "This evening everybody has witnessed a Ryan Giggs who has made 1,000 appearances for this football club, which is magnificent.
"The decision was tactical, regarding Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa. In that dressing room everyone was prepared to play and everyone was fit."
-
OptaJoe: "2 - Thanks to their win, Real Madrid are the only visiting team to have won more than once at Old Trafford in the Champions League."
-
2223:
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan: "The manager is not in a state to talk to the referee about the decision. I think it speaks volumes I am here speaking now and not the manager of this fantastic football club. The decision seemed very harsh, possibly incredible at that moment in the game."
-
2222:
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan: "We felt we had the tactics right, we were comfortable at 0-0 in the first half. We came out and scored a goal which put us in a commanding position. After that we were in reasonable control and created a couple of chances, but then the game totally changed. The decision as amazing but we had to carry on. Playing Madrid with 10 men is very difficult and we feel disappointed we needed with 10 men."
-
2220:
It is Mike Phelan who will face the press for Manchester United. He says that he has just left behind "a distraught dressing room" and a "distraught manager" and that is why he is on media duties.
-
Everton manager David Moyes on BBC Radio 5 live: "I think tonight Sir Alex Ferguson will be rightly as angry as he has ever been. The decision changed the game."
-
2216:
Forty-five minutes after the final whistle and there has still been no word from Manchester United in the wake of their exit. There might be something explosive brewing. Some expectant journalists are crowded around the top table at the post-match press conference.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Old Trafford"Packed house for Ferguson's press conference. No seats or standing room available. Can't wait for this one."
-
2213:
On the Gareth Bale reports, striding in the front door the biggest match of the season would be a rather high-profile way of fuelling speculation over your future. However we have had it confirmed that it was the Tottenham player at Old Trafford tonight.
-

Mendi: "Luka Modric changed the game for Madrid!! Best Player after Ozil tonight."
Ben Olive: "I reckon Real Madrid could go all the way with Ronaldo, Ozil, Ramos, Alonso, and now Cuneyt Cakir on their side."
-
2205:
Whatever you think of referee Cuneyt Cakır's eyesight, there have been some interesting sightings off the pitch at Old Trafford tonight.
England manger Roy Hodgson was apparently at the game and greeted by Manchester United fans chanting the name of Rio Ferdinand.
There have also been some blurry camera phone pics doing the rounds on Twitter which purport to show Tottenham tyro Gareth Bale arriving to take up one of the posh seats. Difficult to say whether it is the Welsh wizard himself.
-

Greg Tomkins: "Personally I enjoyed Nani's tribute to Eric Cantona."
Ross Hodgson: "By the rules it was dangerous play, but refs don't apply the rules consistently, the way they usually apply them its a yellow."
You say Eric Cantona Greg, I'm going for a pretty accurate recreation of former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder David Beckham's sending off against Necaxa in the the 2000 World Club Championship.
-
Retired referee Dermot Gallagher on BBC Radio 5 live: "[The decision was] harsh to say the least but in fairness the Real player did Nani no favours whatsoever. At worst Nani catches the underside of his arm, certainly not the ribs as the guy has gone down and shown.
"I can't reiterate enough that he [Nani] is watching the ball over his shoulder, there was no malice in him. At worst it was a yellow for dangerous play, but if I was refereeing that game I cannot se what stretch of the imagination where I would have sent him off for that."
-
GET INVOLVED
Chris Sinclair: "Have to agree with Roy Keane, dangerous play and therefore red."
Greg Edwards: "If you can't have feet high because it's "dangerous" surely you're no longer allowed overhead kicks in a crowded box?"

Full-time results are coming in thick and fast now in the Championship and Watford are up to second after beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1.

Karthik Basker: "Referees should me made to make post match interviews to explain their hideous decisions at times."
-
2149:
Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane is a surprising supporter of referee Cuneyt Cakir.
"In my career I would think 'did I give the referee a chance to send me off?'. If I did, then it is out of my hands. I think that is the right decision. It is irrelevant if Nani meant to do it. He should be aware of the players around him. Does he think that he will have 20 yards to himself?," he tells ITV Sport.
I did not see that coming.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer"Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to drop Wayne Rooney looked to be the night's biggest decision until Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir sent off Nani. Changed the whole mood and course of the game and now Manchester United must concentrate on domestic matters."
-

2139:
Jose Mourinho has already headed down the tunnel before the final whistle. As soon as Cüneyt Çakır blows up he is surrounded by Manchester United players. Rio Ferdinand is chief amongst them, clapping sarcastically in the official's face.
-
FULL-TIME- Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (agg 5-2)
A comfortable win for Dortmund, who have announced themselves as serious contenders to win the Champions League trophy they lifted in 1997. They overcame a nervous first half-hour to lead 2-0 at the break through goals from Felipe Santana and Mario Goetze, and never looked back. Jakub Blaszczykowski bundled in a third after a goalkeeping error, and Dortmund could have had more. Shakhtar were disappointing.

2126:CLOSE!- Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid (agg 2-3)
Wayne Rooney has invigorated the United attack. He plays in Robin van Persie but the Dutchman is denied by the advancing Diego Lopez. Seconds later, Rooney can't quite get over an awkward bouncing ball in the six-yard box, shooting over with the goal gaping.

Luke Dozza: "Was just about to say Modric was a flop so far at Real Madrid."

2114:Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid (agg 2-3)
There is going to be quite an inquest into referee Cüneyt Çakır's performance among the United fans. He takes Michael Carrick's name for dissent. If he thinks that is dissent he should wait for Sir Alex Ferguson's post-match comments.
-
2110:GOAL- Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid (agg 2-3) - Cristiano Ronaldo (69 mins)
That could be curtains for Manchester United. A real looker of a team goal as Mesut Ozil's flick frees Gonzalo Higuain and the Argentine's low cross, hit blind, picks out Cristiano Ronaldo at the far post. Ronaldo declines to celebrate. Old Trafford is reeling.
-
2107:GOAL- Manchester United 1-1 Real Madrid (agg 2-2) - Luka Modric (66 mins)
Luka Modric has had an up and down first season at Real. That was the undoubted highlight of his career there so far. The Croatian changes pace on the edge of the box and from nowhere conjures a sublime swerving strike that cannons in off the post.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer"Pure theatre at Old Trafford. Ferguson in his technical area gesturing to all parts of the stadium to raise the volume to assist Manchester United's ten man. Mourinho impassive a few yards away and Real Madrid's fans adding to the deafening noise as they sense an opening after Nani's red card."
-
2106:GOAL- Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (agg 5-2) Jakub Blaszczykowski
Dortmund have seen off Shakhtar's early second-half revival and surely finished the tie. Jakub Blaszczykowski is the man who gets the German champions' third goal, forcing the ball into the net from close range after keeper Andriy Pyatov fumbles a long-range effort from Ilkay Gundogan.
-
2106:Manchester United 1-0 Real Madrid (agg 2-1)
Manchester United have half an hour to see out, but they come close to getting a second that would make it that bit easier as Robin van Persie forces a save out of Diego Lopez from 20 yards.
-
Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha: "Now Alonso is going to be free. Danger."
-
2104:CLOSE!- Manchester United 1-0 Real Madrid (agg 2-1)
United got lucky there. Rafael clears off the line from a combination of Raphael Varane and Gonzalo Higuain's headers. Replays show that it may have been a stray arm that got the crucial touch. The referee does not spot that one though.
-
2102:SUBSTITUTION
Jose Mourinho has also acted in the wake of the red card. He brings on Luka Modric for Alvaro Arbeloa.

Everton manager David Moyes on BBC Radio 5 live: "That is incredible. That is a terrible decision from what I can see. That is a really poor decision by the referee. It was never a sending off and this could really change the game. Danny Welbeck will need to come out and play on the left and it will be interesting to see what Sir Alex Ferguson does. He still has the best players out there for him, but it is going to be a long encounter."

Sir Alex Ferguson isn't getting mad he is getting even. The United manager stirs up the home fans gesturing for more noise as Kaka fires over the top.
-
2057:RED CARD- Nani (Manchester United) - 56 mins
Sir Alex Ferguson is down out of the dug-out in bemusement and most of Old Trafford is similarly dumbstruck. Nani's foot was high as he went into an aerial challenge with Alvaro Arbeloa, but his eyes were on the ball throughout. His studs catch the Real defender in the ribs though and that is enough for Cüneyt Çakır to produce red.
-
2056:Manchester United 1-0 Real Madrid (agg 2-1)
Real Madrid need to score to take the game into extra-time and they are straight back up the opposite end in search of a way back into the game. Mesut Ozil's low cross is blocked, Cristiano Ronaldo cracks a shot into a defender's midriff from 35 yards before Gonzalo Higuain plays in a pearler of low cross that skims through the United six-yard box without anyone laying boot leather on it.
-
2055:
Everton manager David Moyes on BBC Radio 5 live: "There were bits of good fortunate about the goal but Manchester United created it because they kept the ball alive and in the box and forced Real Madrid into making decisions. Real need to come and get a goal now and I have always felt Manchester United looked lined up for counter attacking and Madrid have to come at them."

-
2053:GOAL- Manchester United 1-0 Real Madrid (agg 2-1) - Sergio Ramos og - 48 mins
Advantage United. It all started with a forceful run from Rafael and it ended with a tentative poke into his own net by Sergio Ramos. The ball broke from Rafael's feet to Robin van Persie whose shot was blocked. Raphael Varane missed the chance to clear and when Nani centered the ball low Ramos was thrown by Danny Welbeck's feathered touch and could only divert the ball into his own goal.
-
2048:
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer"Engrossing stuff at Old Trafford. Manchester United conceding plenty of possession to Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo is being kept at arm's length as Sir Alex Ferguson's side prepare to hit on the counter attack - but still plenty of threat. United halfway there."
-
2048:
Sir Alex Ferguson talking to ITV Sport: "We continue the way we are doing. We are playing with great speed and we must take our chances.
"The concentration has been good, it is essential that is 100%. If we keep doing that it gives us a better chance."

Half-time in most of tonight's Championship games, with current results making matters very tight indeed at the bottom end of the table.

-
2045:
At the other end of the age scale, Raphael Varane has been giving Manchester United a glimpse of what might have been. Sir Alex Ferguson was in for the teenager when he was at boyhood club Lens, but lost out to a strong Madrid offer championed by Zinedine Zidane.
The 19-year-old was born two weeks before Ryan Giggs helped Manchester United lift the Premier League trophy in 1993.
-
Olympic gold medallist Sir Matthew Pinsent: "I've been retired 8+yrs. When Ryan Giggs made his debut for United I hadn't been to an Olympics. Unbelievable endurance for his 1000."

-
2037:
Not quite the goal-packed mutual attacking blitz that some expected. Instead it is an absorbing, tense affair that Manchester United have created the better chances in.
After a strong start, Real Madrid's attacking artistes looked like they were suffering a bit of a mental block towards the end of the first half. With the scoreline balanced though, it only needs one Real goal though to send United behind and change the whole tone of the evening.
-
HALF-TIME- Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (agg 4-2)
First-half goals from Felipe Santana and Mario Goetze have given German champions Dortmund a comfortable cushion after a nervy opening half-an-hour. Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu needs a major tactical re-think here. He set his side out with the intention of soaking up Dortmund possession and sneaking an away goal on the counter-attack. Now they need two just to force extra-time.

Dortmund stretch their lead and take control of the tie with a stylish goal. Robert Lewandowski gets away down the right to deliver a low cross, and Mario Goetze gets in between two Shakhtar defenders to steer the ball into the far corner.
-
2023:PENALTY APPEAL- Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Manchester United arms shoot upwards as Rafael falls under the attentions of Sergio Ramos in the box after scampering onto a lovely throughball from Ryan Giggs. The referee, perhaps rightly, remains unmoved.
-
CHAMPIONSHIP LATEST
Couple of goals have gone in in the Championship which could prove important towards the bottom of the table if scores stay the same.
Struggling Wolves are leading 1-0 at Millwall thanks to David Edwards's ninth-minute strike while Barnsley are losing at Burnley, Charlie Austin with the goal. Peterborough are also winning 1-0 against Charlton, with Danny Swanson's strike meaning they are out of the bottom three as things stand. Tense.

Everton manager David Moyes on BBC Radio 5 live: "Both teams are having their moments. Whenever they go up the pitch opportunities are arising, the disappointing thing for both teams at the moment is the quality of the corners."

Henry Whitfield: "As a Chelsea fan, I'm supporting United. When they win, Jose Mourinho can come home."

-
2021:CLOSE!- Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Another big opening for Danny Welbeck and another wobble from Diego Lopez, but the score remains blank. Robin van Persie gets away from Sergio Ramos, but his well-hit shot is central and should be bread and butter for the Real goalkeeper. Lopez has to get off his line sharpish to block Welbeck's follow-up with his shoulder.
-
2018:GOAL- Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (agg 3-2) Felipe Santana
Dortmund lead for the first time in the tie. Shakhtar have defended pretty well for half-an-hour, but have no answer as Brazilian centre-back Felipe Santana climbs high to power in a header from a corner. That should settle the nerves of the German champions. Shakhtar will have to come out and attack more now.
-
2017:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
The momentum of this match is swinging one way and then the other. Manchester United storm up the opposite end and almost force a way though, before Michael Carrick sticks out a foot to divert Gonzalo Higuain's cross behind with Cristiano Ronaldo lurking. Enthralling.
-
Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (agg 2-2)
Shakhtar centre-back Oleksandr Kucher is walking a disciplinary tightrope here. Having already collected an early booking, he has just gone in with a high foot on Dortmund right-back Lukasz Piszczek. A free-kick only, though.
Dortmund are having plenty of possession in opposition territory without really threatening a breakthrough. Shakhtar's game is to absorb the pressure and try to pounce on the counter attack.
-
2014:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Manchester United hearts in mouths as Cristiano Ronaldo almost bundles his way through. There are enough red-shirted bodies back there though to snuff out his shot.

James Holman: "This game already shows how good these two teams are."
-
2013:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Manchester United look like they are playing Madrid at their own game as another swift counter almost catches the visitors short at the back. Sergio Ramos blocks Danny Welbeck's shot after a lovely touch from Robin van Persie in the build-up. Van Persie attempts an acrobatic volley from the subsequent set-piece, but comes up empty-handed.

2007:HITS THE WOODWORK- Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
So very close. Nemanja Vidic meets a corner with a textbook downward header which beats Diego Lopez all ends up. The post comes to Real's rescue before Danny Welbeck turns the rebound back at Lopez. It ends up lodged between the goalkeeper's legs, but the right side of the line from a Spanish point of view.

2005:YELLOW CARD- Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
This time though Angel di Maria gets the better of Patrice Evra and the Frenchman has to haul him to the ground to bring a Real attack to an early end. The referee takes Evra's name and he will be walking a tightrope for the next 70 minutes.
-
2003:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Manchester United are pressing all over the pitch when Real have the ball. Patrice Evra just followed Angel di Maria all the way back towards the halfway line to get a challenge in.
-
2001:Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (agg 2-2)
After a cagey first 10 minutes at Signal Iduna Park, the first opening of the game goes Dortmund's way. Mario Goetze plays a nicely-judged through ball to Robert Lewandowski, but Shakhtar keeper Andriy Pyatov is quickly off his line to block.
-
2001:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Ryan Giggs rolls back the years with a sublime outside of the foot cross that picks out Robin van Persie at the far post. The Dutchman fluffs his volley though and the ball bounces meekly into Diego Lopez's gloves. Manchester United are feeling their way into the match now.
-
Everton manager David Moyes on BBC Radio 5 live: "Real Madrid are pressing Manchester United at the moment and that was a half chance, if he could have got his shot through the legs of the defender the goalkeeper was unsighted."
-
1959:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Gonzalo Higuain gets the first sight of goal and he should have done better with the yard of space that he stole from Nemanja Vidic. The Argentine's shot from the edge of the box lacked the curl needed to get around the sprawling Vidic and trouble David de Gea, flying a foot wide.
-
1956:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Tom Cleverley is hobbling and wincing after coming off worse in a challenge for a 50:50 ball with Cristiano Ronaldo. Cleverley missed a large part of last season with a foot injury, but he looks like he will run that one off.

-
1954:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Real Madrid win the first corner of the game, but Robin van Persie is stout in defence at the near post, heading clear. Xabi Alonso's attempt to pick out Mesut Ozil at the back post form the loose ball is then over-hit.
-
Everton manager David Moyes on BBC Radio 5 live: "We have seen so many Gareth Bale goals of a similar type recently we were expecting that Ronaldo free kick to fly over the wall and find the target, but fortunately for Manchester United it hit the wall. Manchester United have not had any flow to their play yet, it is like Manchester United are saying 'we will let you come on to to us and then try and pick you off'."

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Old Trafford"Cristiano Ronaldo looked genuinely touched by that wonderful ovation from Manchester United's fans. And looking back on his feats at Old Trafford it was thoroughly deserved."
-
1950:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Fabio Coentrao slips Ryan Giggs with a neat change of feet and is brought down by the Welshman's trailing leg. Madrid have a free-kick from an acute angle 25 yards out, which Ronaldo blasts into the wall to relieved cheers. The atmosphere is feverish at Old Trafford.

Kevin Kilbane, BBC Radio 5 live"When I first played against Ronaldo in the Premier League he was playing as an out and out winger - very restricted to his position. But over the years he developed into that all round player at Manchester United and he is hard to nail down now.
"He is lethal from a distance and if he gets in one-on-one situations, like he did against Rafael in the first leg, he is unstoppable."
-
Barcelona defender, formerly of Manchester United, Gerard Pique: "Giggs playing his 1000th career appearance against Real Madrid! #legend"
-
1947:Manchester United 0-0 Real Madrid (agg 1-1)
Those fickle fans. Manchester United's supporters jeer Cristiano Ronaldo's early touches in a light-hearted way. Patrice Evra's thoroughball has too much pace on it for Nani at the other end.

1943:
Manchester United have cut the public address system early this evening to help the atmosphere breathe a bit and lure people into the stadium early. It looks like it has worked a trick.
A massive red, white and black mosiac fills the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand as the players walk out into a bubbling cauldron of noise. Cristiano Ronaldo looks about, his expression unreadable, as he drinks it all in.
-
1939:
Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane, speaking on ITV: "It surprised us all that he [Sir Alex Ferguson] left Wayne Rooney out. We have to trust the manager a bit tonight but in terms of the way Wayne carried on in the last year of his [previous] contract, maybe he has decided to go about getting Robin van Persie up and running. Maybe the writing is on the wall for him."
-
1939:
Sir Alex Ferguson on ITV Sport: "It is one of these situations where we regard the qualities of Real Madrid with Xabi Alonso as controller of the team. Young Shinji Kagawa found it hard to do that defensive job in the first leg.
"Danny Welbeck is the best in our team at that, and that is the reason I have selected him.
"Wayne Rooney needs a game or two. He did well in the second half against Norwich, but he looked like he needed a game. He probably will come on in the second half and win the game for us!"
-
1938:
Real Madrid have followed the Manchester City template since their arrival in England for the game, training at the Etihad Stadium and staying at the same hotel that City. If they can repeat City's 1-0 league win from the backend of last season, that would be enough.
-
Everton manager David Moyes on BBC Radio 5 live: "I think Sir Alex Ferguson has gone with his real men tonight - Vidic and Ferdinand at the back. Interesting that Sir Alex Ferguson has only one defender on the bench tonight, it is a very attacking squad."
-
1932:GET INVOLVED
John C: "Rooney is dispensable in current squad, needs to up his act in big matches. Remember England record is better without him."
Ben Aitkenhead: "Rooney on bench? Too cautious. Cannot believe it. No way Real Madrid do not score. Both teams will need two to win."
Saqueeb Rajan: "Jose probably promised to drop Ronaldo if SAF dropped Rooney...mind games ...sneaky..."
Not a big-game player? He did score in Manchester United's last Champions League final appearance...
-
1931:
If Wayne Rooney's nose has been put out of joint by his being left on the bench for this one, he is hiding it well. The England striker has arrived at the ground in jovial mood, laughing and joking with Rio Ferdinand as they made their way to the dressing room.
-
1927:
OptaJean: "134 - Ryan Giggs is playing in his 134th Champions League game, only Raúl has more (142)."
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Old Trafford"Sitting in very close proximity to Real Madrid's travelling fans. In very buoyant, noisy mood. Applauded Giggs' name when read out. Sporting."
-
1927:
Both sides are coming into this match full of form. Real Madrid have won all four games since their first leg draw with United, beating Barcelona both in the league and Copa del Rey in the last seven days alone.
United have won seven of their last eight with that draw at the Bernabeu the only result to break their run. You would have to be a harsh judge to call that a hiccup.
Mouth-watering.
-
Former Manchester United striker Lou Macari on BBC Radio 5 live: "I was here 10 years ago and it was a great game. Plenty of goals and plenty of great individual games from great players. There is plenty of talent on both sides, but Manchester United are at home and they have players capable of winning on the night."
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Old Trafford"Personal opinion - would never contemplate leaving Wayne Rooney out of game such as this. Suspect he will be fairly pumped up if he gets on."
-
1920:
Some might draw parallels between Wayne Rooney's omission for this match and David Beckham being left on the bench for Real Madrid's visit in 2003. Or Ruud van Nistlelrooy being dropped for the 2006 League Cup final against Wigan. Both were on their way the following summer.
Those same people might point at the Times back page earlier this month linking Paris St Germain with a summer move for Rooney.
Me? I'm saying nothing.

Peter, via text: "In three hours time SAF will either be branded a genius or a joke! Peter Robertshaw, Old Trafford.
James, via text: "Rooney out just means one up top five in midfield and two very quick and tricky wingers to break in Welbeck and Nani. Surprised still but if it's RVP or Rooney up top alone it was always going to be the former he is more clinical."
Peter, via text: "Very rarely does SAF make apparently strange team selections and gets it wrong-hope this selection continues that trend!"
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Old Trafford"Wayne Rooney's exclusion overshadows everything so far but a big chance for Nani to impress and for Ryan Giggs to showcase his enduring abilities on his 1,000th senior appearance. Sir Alex Ferguson has gone for the vast experience of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in central defence.
"Gonzalo Higuain is preferred to Karim Benzema, who started in the first leg, by Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho."
-
1912:
Let's have a little nosey at that Real Madrid side shall we? When you name a bench as strong as their's, featuring Pepe, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Luka Modric, you can guarantee the first XI is pretty good.
I'd be having a shoot on sight policy with Diego Lopez between the sticks though. He looked shaky in the first leg and is a significant downgrade on Iker Casillas.
-
Everton manager David Moyes, who gave Wayne Rooney his professional debut, on Sir Alex Ferguson's decision not to start the forward: "It is a big surprise to many, but I am not as surprised as most though. Tactically Ferguson has had to pick a side that can cope with Real Madrid but also win. Maybe he can use Wayne Rooney in a different role by coming off the bench.
"I think Wayne will take the news well, like the professional he is. He will be disappointed he is not playing but the manager chooses the team he feels is the best to win and he feels Wayne should start on the bench tonight."

Colin Bryce: "You play your best player in the big games. That's why Van Persie starts. Rooney being challenged to up his game."
Baritone Rogers: "Reckon this is the beginning of the end for Rooney at United."
David Cornwell: "I think Fergie's plan is obvious, defend the away goal. Very risky, but he has fire power in reserve. No player has right to start."
-
1904:
Mila Kunis? At Vicarage Road? That is almost as surprising as Wayne Rooney being named on the bench.
I'll believe the slightly optimistic rumours stem from her interview with BBC Radio 1's Chris Stark. I'll believe it when I see the Black Swan star getting stuck into some pre-match fried chicken.

1901:CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Third place Watford host Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, where a win could move the Hornets into the top two if Hull fail to win at Crystal Palace.
If the Watford game fails to live up to expectations, however, there is always the prospect of a bit of celeb spotting for fans with Hollywood actress Mila Kunis said to be in attendance...
Elsewhere, Peterborough host Charlton and a win could move them out of the bottom three, while a big game in the North West - Bolton v Blackburn that is, rather than a certain other game going on at Old Trafford.
-
Borussia Dortmund v Shakhtar Donetsk (1945 GMT)
BBC Sport's Mike Whalley reports: "There is another Champions League last-16 tie to be decided tonight as the champions of Germany and Ukraine face off at Signal Iduna Park. Borussia Dortmund start with the away goals advantage against Shakhtar Donetsk after a 2-2 draw at the Donbass Arena three weeks ago. But they must take a fitness check on Mats Hummels. The centre-back, who scored Dortmund's late equaliser in Donetsk, has missed the last two games with flu. Shakhtar returned from their domestic winter break with a 4-1 win over Volyn Lutsk last Friday, and are 13 points clear at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League. Dortmund, second in the Bundesliga, trail leaders Bayern Munich by 17 points, despite beating Hannover 3-1 at the weekend."
-
1900:
It may feel that like every eyeball in the western world and beyond will be turned to events at Old Trafford, but there is plenty of football going on elsewhere.
-
1859:
BBC Sport's Howard Nurse at Old Trafford: "About 280 media at Old Trafford tonight. The normal figure is about 115-120. And journalists from around the world."
-
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live"Wow no Rooney!!!!"
-
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville:
"Manchester is alive!! Can't wait for this tonight!"
-
1858:
All eyes will inevitably be on the absence of Wayne Rooney, but should United fans be more concerned with Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick doing the heavy hod-carrying in the middle of the part in the absence of the injured Phil Jones?
And has Robin van Persie been good enough since he hurt his hip at QPR to justify keep his place up front ahead of Rooney?
So many questions posed by this selection from Sir Alex.
-
Gary Lineker, BBC Sport"Completely flummoxed as to why SAF would leave out Wayne Rooney. Huge gamble! I mean Nani?"
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Old Trafford"Only one story in town so far tonight and that is Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's incredibly bold call to drop Wayne Rooney from his starting line-up. Huge decision by Ferguson and what does it say about Rooney's current status at Man Utd that he does not start Champions League game against Real Madrid? Hard to imagine such a move not so long ago - or even now."
-
1853:LINE-UPS- Manchester United v Real Madrid (1945 GMT)
Man Utd: De Gea, Da Silva, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick, Cleverley, Nani, Welbeck, Giggs, van Persie. Subs: Lindegaard, Evans, Valencia, Rooney, Hernandez, Young, Kagawa.
Real Madrid: Diego Lopez, Arbeloa, Varane, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao, Khedira, Alonso, Di Maria, Ozil, Ronaldo, Higuain. Subs: Adan, Pepe, Kaka, Benzema, Albiol, Modric, Callejon.

1851:
A hardworking starting XI with Danny Welbeck and Ryan Giggs alongside Nani as the three behind Robin van Persie. There is plenty of firepower on Manchester United bench. Is the plan to hold out and then pile on the big guns if Real get ahead?
What are your thoughts on that pick?
-
1847:BREAKING MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS
Wayne Rooney drops to the bench as Ryan Giggs makes his 1000th senior competitive appearance, Nani starts as another of the six changes from the weekend.
-
1843:
It also looks like Nani has been included with Shinji Kagawa left out. If correct, that is a brave selection from Sir Alex Ferguson. Nothing official yet.
-
1840:
Intriguing, Very intriguing. There are suggestions from journalists within Old Trafford that Wayne Rooney has been left out of the Manchester United starting line-up in favour of Ryan Giggs. We are chasing confirmation now.
-
Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune: "I remember when the great Ronaldo from Brazil scored hat-trick against Manchester United at Old Trafford and received great applause from all the fans There is a great respect for Real Madrid, but hopefully it wont be a loss [for Manchester United] tonight."
-
1836:
David Beckham, who earlier that season had been left with a cut over his eye after a dressing room argument with Sir Alex Ferguson, came off the bench on 23 April 2003 and scored twice as Manchester United beat Real 4-3 on the night. It was all in vain though as Ronaldo (the older, slightly tubbier version) hit a hat-trick to send United out 6-5 on aggregate.
You can listen to archive commentary of how that unfolded as part of a gloriously-retro montage on the BBC Sport website now.
-
1833:
United fans used to sing a little ditty about "that boy" Cristiano Ronaldo that began with observation that "he plays on the left, he plays on the right" and ended with a rude, but favourable comparison to David Beckham.
Fair to say that the home fans were not singing that on Real Madrid's last trip to Old Trafford.
-
Former Manchester United striker Lou Macari, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "When Ronaldo first came to Old Trafford people were saying he didn't have a great deal to offer but he got better and better and when he left, apart from Messi, he was and is without doubt the best player in the world. The same with Robin van Persie, he has got better and better and there are two match winners out there tonight."
-
1827:
Cristiano Ronaldo's last appearance at Old Trafford, before his £80m move to Real, was as part of the team that clinched the 2008-09 title with a goalless draw against Arsenal - matching Liverpool's record of 18 English titles.
Since then he has scored a frightening 158 goals in 152 games for his new employers. His boss said he was "probably" the best player ever. Even allowing for Jose Mourinho's hyperbole, it is safe to say he can play a bit.
-
1821:
If you get that prediction right, it might be worth picking some lucky numbers when you next down the newsagents.
-
1818:
As a little sideshow prediction game, why not see if you can predict what Jose Mourinho will get up to on this latest trip to Old Trafford.
Back on 9 March 2004, the then-Porto manager sprinted down the touchline and into English football consciousness as he celebrated Costinha's last-minute aggregate winner en route to Champions League glory.
In May 2005 he returned as his Chelsea side broke Manchester United's Premiership points record with a 3-1 win over United.
On 11 March 2009, Mourinho, now at Inter Milan, was alleged to have got into an altercation with a supporter after a 2-0 Champions League defeat. No action was taken by the police.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, writing in his Real Madrid programme notes: "This is what it is all about - a packed Old Trafford, the floodlights on, the pitch glistening and two of the greatest and most romantic clubs in the game about to do battle.
"People ask me why I don't retire after so many years in the game, but how could anyone with an ounce of passion for football in their soul voluntarily walk away from the opportunity to be involved in this kind of occasion?
"I like to think that the pioneers like Sir Matt Busby and Santiago Bernabeu, the president of Real Madrid who gave his name to their stadium, will be up there smiling and excited as the rest of us at the prospect of another dramatic night featuring the best that the game can provide."
-
1807:
There were hordes of fans outside the Real Madrid team hotel before midday, city-centre entrepreneurs selling half-half scarves to morning commuters and burger grills fired up hours ago around Old Trafford. Even today's tram announcements have been in Spanish for the sizeable contingent of travelling fans.
The sun has dipped below the horizon now and one of those spell-binding European nights is just beginning.
-
1803:
"The world will stop to watch." That is how Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho imagines going-ons outside Old Trafford as his side set about converting a 1-1 aggregate scoreline into a place in the last eight.
He may be right, but Manchester has already more than made up for 90 minutes of global inactivity.
