-
2236:
Some buttock-clenchingly important matches still to come for Aston Villa. Meanwhile, despite their win, Manchester City look highly unlikely to go through the last-day wringer like last year. What the summer holds at the Etihad Stadium will be interesting though.
Tomorrow brings the daddy of Champions League last-16 ties; Manchester United v Real Madrid. Jose's back, Cristiano's back, I trust you will be too. See you there, bye for now.
-
2229:GET INVOLVED
Elton Mowbray: "Villa have hung around mid-to-bottom half of table for several seasons now - do them good to go down & re-group and rebuild - let Cardiff/Hull/Palace bring some new life & entertainment to the Premier League."
Tom, Brighton: "Bad, bad time for midlands teams. Villa and Wolves in the mire in their respective leagues, Coventry stuck in league one & on the brink of financial catastrophe..."
-
2225:MANAGER REACTION
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: "I cannot fault the lads. We have been playing very well without getting the rewards we deserve.
"We were in the game for long periods and everyone is disappointed to lose.
"We had one or two little half chances, but we were against a good side. We came away with our heads held high.
"I did not think it was a foul. When you are a defender and you are near enough last man, you do not take any chances. The players know they are playing well. It is different if you have been done heavily.
"We will keep playing and hopefully the rewards will come."
-
2222:
"I have always had the belief that we will stay up. If we keep playing like that we will win more than not," Paul Lambert concludes. Full quotes to come.
-
2220:
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is in the sights of the television cameras...
-
2219:
Manchester City's Kolo Toure speaking to Sky Sports about Christian Benteke: "He is a great young striker and I knew it was going to be a good battle and I had to be ready for it. But it was not just me, the whole team defended well and we need that spirit if we are going to be one of the best teams in the Premier League."
-
2218:
Thirty points still to play for, but with a gap of 12 points separating them from Manchester United, surely City's title defence is cooked. The best they can hope for is a morale-boosting bit of party-pooping at Old Trafford in the derby on 8 April and possibly a run to the final of the FA Cup. That would be a pretty positive way to finish the season actually.
-
2212:MANAGER REACTION
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini on Sky Sports: "We have to keep on winning and see. This is football nothing is impossible. We know it will be difficult but we will keep on trying. For us it was important to stay 12 points behind United and for us the championship is not over.
"We are playing well. We had good chances and Aston Villa are a good team. It is strange that they are down there and for that reason I am happy with my team. We hope that maybe for the FA Cup [against Burnley on 9 March] or Everton [16 March], Vincent Kompany will be back.
"Jack Rodwell is very unlucky, I was very happy with how he played against Chelsea and he has done his hamstring."
-

Ben Guigs: "Villa looking like a team that's going down right now, playing decently but getting absolutely nothing out of it.
Gene Yew: "Love how people are saying Villa are in trouble. They have Reading and QPR next. Chill. They wont go down."
The Twitterati are split. Villa, too good to go down? That old chestnut has lured several teams down the drainpipe.
-
2158:
That defeat extends Villa's run to one win in 10 games in all competitions. They are up to their neck in the relegation mire. Their last-day meeting with Wigan and Roberto Martinez, the man who spurned them, could be an absolute monster.

-
2148:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Edin Dzeko almost gets a toe on a cross at the near post, but lacks a yard of pace.
-
2147:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Villa are piling forward. Christian Benteke's appeals for a penalty are waved away as he flops down under pressure in the box from Matija Nastasic. The Serbian defender looked like he left his leg in there and got none of the ball. Tough on Villa.
-
2145:SUBSTITUTION- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Aston Villa make their final change, bringing on Moroccan international Karim El Ahmadi.
-
2144:FIVE MINUTES TO GO- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Roberto Mancini's side are five minutes from shutting the gap at the top to 12 points.
-
2143:SUBSTITUTION- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Javi Garcia cannot quite get his left foot around a corner and his volley wobbles wide of Brad Guzan's goal. Andreas Weimann makes way for Simon Dawkins for Villa.
-
2142:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Christian Benteke wins a header in the heart of the City box, but his knock-down cannot pick out Gabriel Agbonlahor. Aston Villa are readying Simon Dawkins on the bench.
-
2140:TEN MINUTES TO GO
Andreas Weimann cracks a shot over the top from an awkwardly bouncing ball as 80 minutes comes up on the clock. Villa need something sharpish to get out of that bottom three tonight.
-
2138:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Christian Benteke is toiling hard up front, but there is not a lot for him to chew on. Gael Clichy sees him off down by the corner flag and the Belgian looks a little fatigued as he jogs back into position.
-
2136:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Ashley Westwood's needlessly aerial ball across field is too high for Matthew Lowton and goes out for a City throw-in.
-
2134:YELLOW CARD- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Christian Benteke goes into the referee's notebook as he clashes with Matija Nastasic in an aerial challenge. City take advantage of the break in play to swap Carlos Tevez for Samir Nasri and we are into the final 15 minutes of normal time.
-
GET INVOLVED
Gareth Brown: "Man City really need this second goal to kill the game. Aston Villa still in it."
Jeffrey Soh: "As a Man Utd fan, I don't mind a City's win today. For us to break Premier League point record, we need this motivation."
Nabil Dhala: "Villa have a chance. They've dealt well with City's threat. If they can get a good set piece delivery, with Benteke, who knows?"
-
2132:DISALLOWED GOAL- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
No real complaints from Manchester City. Edin Dzeko was well offside as Yaya Youre lined up his shot from 20 yards and nothing had changed when it came back off the post, possibly via a little touch from Brad Guzan, for the Bosnian to turn into the unguarded net.
-
2130:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Nathan Baker screens off Edin Dzeko to prevent him getting involved in Carlos Tevez's attempt to hound Fabian Delph off the ball. The referee rightly reaches for his whistle. City clearly reckon they can milk the Villa defence for another mistake.

Greg a Villa fan in Walsall on text via 81111: "This is officially the worst Villa team I can remember in my 26 years on the planet. Rabbits in the headlights."
-
2127:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Pablo Zabaleta clears the set-piece under pressure from Chrsitian Benteke. Villa do not look they are going to die wondering in this game, that means that there will be space for City's attackers as well though.
-
2126:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Matthew Lowton hammers a viciously swerving shot goalwards. Unfortunately for Villa the swerve is a little too vicious, taking the ball wide of Joe Hart's post. But Villa have a corner now...
-
2124:SUBSTITUTION- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Aston Villa remove Charles N'Zogbia and throw on Brett Holman in an attempt to wrestle the game back their way.

-
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Villa Park on BBC Radio 5 live:"Kolo Toure matched Gabriel Agbonlahor stride-for-stride there, that was excellent defending. That move showed pace and power from Villa.
"That is much better."

-
2122:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Aston Villa almost catch City with a swift counter as Andreas Wiemann's cross almost picks out Gabriel Agbonlahor's dart to the near post. The striker is a little too short to get his forehead onto the cross though. Now, if that had been Christian Benteke...
-
2120:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
City are looking slick as an oil spill coming forward. Lovely passing from Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko as they purr forward.
-
2118:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Aston Villa manger Paul Lambert is whirling like a dervish on the sidelines. He needs to conjure a little more composure rather than industry from his side though. They are looking flustered at the back and City are all about them in search of a second.
-
GET INVOLVED
Christopher Banks: "For all of Villa's hard work it is those sort of mistakes that could condemn them to relegation."
-
2115:CLOSE!- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Did Villa learn from that opening goal? It doesn't look like it as Mathew Lowton is caught in possession by the busy Edin Dzeko, who feeds Carlos Tevez. This time the Villa defender does get back to clear his shot off the line, but had Tevez played in the free David Silva it surely would have been 2-0.
-
2113:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Carlos Tevez smacks well over from fully 30 yards, but he is brimful of confidence. Gabriel Agbonlahor was unfortunate at the opposite end when the referee blew for a foul against him as he eased a City defender out of the way.
It is a blindingly obvious thing to say, but the next goal is crucial. It doesn't feel far off either.
-
2110:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Look away Aston Villa fans of a pessimistic disposition. Your side have scored the least second-half goals of any Premier League team with 13 and have lost all nine games in which they trailed at the break. High time to buck that trend.

James in Solihull a Villa fan on text via 81111: "Clark is only 23, captained us most games this season, been absolutely fantastic. Unlucky mate, come on Villa, we can do this!"

2108:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
A lively start to the second period. Christian Benteke pulls his right boot back but Pablo Zabaleta nips in before he can crash in a shot from the edge of the box. At the other end Edin Dzeko's deflected shot needs close attention from Brad Guzan as it loops wide, but dangerously close to the upright of his goal.
-
2106:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
David Silva is floating dangerously between the lines of Aston Villa's midfield and defence, The Spaniard probes, but Pablo Zabaleta's shot is blocked from Carlos Tevez's cut-back.

Simon Bidwell: "Clark's slip was eerily reminiscent of Richard Dunne vs Man U in the 2010 League Cup final. If only he'd learnt from the past."
Fi3ld: "Dzeko makes no contact with the ball but Clark only slipped... AKA a foul. He was tripped."
-
2101:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
The slow-motion replays suggest that Ciaran Clark's standing leg might have been taken by Edin Dzeko as he dallied with the ball under pressure in the build-up to the goal. The Villa captain was straight on at the officials about an apparent foul. It could have all been avoided if he had looked long and played safe though.
That is three in three for Carlos Tevez who was set up by Dzeko after Clark's inadvertent help.
-
2056:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
By my reckoning that was only Jack Rodwell's 58th appearance in three seasons for club and country. For a man tipped as a future England captain, those twangy hamstrings are hampering his attempts to realise that considerable potential.

GET INVOLVED
Ben Hagyard: "If ever there's a sign that you're going to get relegated, that was it."
-
2050:Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
Tough to take for Aston Villa after a strong opening, but they could learn from their opponents who weathered an early storm to stay in with a shout. That is now 17 games in all competitions without a clean sheet for Aston Villa.
-
2048:HALF-TIME- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City
-
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Villa Park on BBC Radio 5 live:"I have never seen anything like that. Ciaran Clark has tried to do a 'Cruyff-turn' as the last man and he has been tackled by Edin Dzeko."
Listen to commentary of Aston Villa v Manchester City on BBC Radio 5 live now.
-
2048:GOAL- Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester City - Carlos Tevez
After all that hard work from Villa, Ciaran Clark's studs let them down. The centre-back slips as he attempts to turn on the ball in his own half. Edin Dzeko nicks it away from him, squares to Carlos Tevez who shapes to shoot, skips past a desparing Brad Guzan and slots past Clark who has got back on the line, but can do nothing.
-
2044:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Aston Villa get a respite as Christian Benteke muscles in on Kolo Toure, a wrestling match emerges and the referee steps in to award the free-kick the hosts' way.
-
2043:CLOSE!- Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Carlos Tevez warms Brad Guzan's palms with a meaty hit from 20 yard before the Argentine almost gets a decisive touch as Edin Dzeko fizzes the ball back through the box. Aston Villa gasping for the half-time whistle. Four minutes to hold out.
-
GET INVOLVED
Matthew Harris: "City turning the screw now it's only a matter of time before they score."
-
2041:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Manchester City work a corner short and catch Villa napping. James Milner has bags of time and space from just inside the area, he can summon up the power but not the accuracy as his shot flies clean over the top.
-
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Villa Park on BBC Radio 5 live:"What a save from Brad Guzan there. He was at full stretch and got a strong right-hand to it.
"I thought it would go in off the post even when he got a touch to it. That made the save even more impressive."
Listen to commentary of Aston Villa v Manchester City on BBC Radio 5 live now.
-
2039:HITS THE WOODWORK- Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
As close as anyone has come. Pablo Zabaleta rattles the post with a fine curling effort as he cuts in off the right flank and onto his weaker foot. On closer inspection, Brad Guzan has got fingertips to that to turn it onto the woodwork. Great save, but City are looking ominous.
-
2037:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
David Silva swivels on a sixpence, throwing the Villa defence off his scent. Carlos Tevez darts in behind the home side's defence, but the Spaniard's pass is a little overcooked.
-
2035:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Manchester City were wobbled a bit by Aston Villa's fast start, but they have managed to settle into the game in the last five minutes or so, enjoying the best of the possession and territory. Ten minutes to go until the break.
-
BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty:"Jack Rodwell suffered similar problems throughout his last season at Everton. Must be very tough mentally for him as well."
-
2033:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Ciaran Clark bundles over Carlos Tevez to give away a free-kick out on the left flank. James Milner takes on the responsibility, but his low shot, wrapped around the wall, is safely into the gloves of Brad Guzan.
-
2031:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
He was a little slow getting back up to speed post the Africa Cup of Nations, but Yaya Toure looks like he is pulling the strings once again for Manchester City. The Ivorian finds Gael Clichy with a clipped ball forward before almost being played in as he runs beyond Carlos Tevez. Half an hour gone.
-
2028:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Aston Villa are popping the ball around neatly, but they are struggling to break down a deep Manchester City defence. Going back to the old school and slinging it into the big man Christian Benteke could be the plan against a nervy looking City centre-back partnership.
-
GET INVOLVED
Aston_Sam: "This isn't the Villa team I know and love... It is their better quality impostors..."
Scott Prentice: "Poor Jack Rodwell, another player whose career looks to be ruined by constant injury."
-
2025:SUBSTITUTION- Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
That looks like it might be the last action from Jack Rodwell. The former Everton man heads to the sidelines wincing and holding his hamstring. That could be a recurrence of an injury that troubled him for much of last season. Edin Dzeko is summoned on in his place.
-
2023:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Jack Rodwell almost gets free at the opposite end, jinking past Matthew Lowton before slashing a shot over the top from a narrowing angle.
-
Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage at Villa Park on BBC Radio 5 live:"I do not get that from Manchester City, Christian Benteke had a free run at that header. Why let him do that?
"It was a good powerful downwards headers. Yaya Toure or Matija Nastasic should have been put on him to block his run."

-
2022:CLOSE!- Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
Christian Benteke bullets a header down towards the bottom corner of the Manchester City's goal. Textbook stuff, but he is denied by Carlos Tevez on the post. The Argentine hoofs clear from the whitewash.

-
2018:Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester City
James Milner shepherds a ball out of play over the Aston Villa byeline, convinced that Joe Bennett has got the final touch and that the officials will award a Manchester City corner. No such luck. The home fans enjoy breaking the news to Milner as he picks up the ball and heads for the flag.

One hundred and twenty-fifth league match or not, Roberto Mancini might not be that delighted to see Jose Mourinho, repeatedly reported to be in his final season at Real Madrid, making himself at home at Eastlands over the past couple of days. If City limp over the line this season could Jose swap the Bernabeu for the bright lights of East Manchester?
Or is the presence of former Barcelona officials Txiki Bergiristain and Ferran Soriano among the City hierarchy enough to put a kibosh on such talk? There is a little poser for you...

A knee injury picked up by Sergio Aguero in training on Sunday sees the Argentine striker replaced by countryman Carlos Tevez in the only change from the Manchester City team that beat Chelsea 2-0. James Milner starts at his former club, but fellow ex-Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry only makes the substitute's bench.

What Aston Villa would give to look behind them and see the possibility of fourth place as a problem.
If they avoid defeat tonight, Paul Lambert's side will emerge out of the bottom three to be replaced by Wigan. With six points separating them from 15th though before play, it looks like they are in for the long haul in this year's relegation scrap.

1908:
Tottenham, fuelled by Gareth Bale's brilliance, are now just two points behind the champions, with Chelsea only another two further back.
Even if an out-of-sorts Arsenal are out of range, the possibility remains of City having to book in for a humbling late summer trip out to eastern Europe to qualify for Champions League group stage.
