Ten-man Aberdeen held on to claim a point in a drab, goalless encounter with St Mirren at Pittodrie.

Craig Samson kept out an early Jonny Hayes first-half effort, then St Mirren's Gary Teale watched a left-footed shot inch wide.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Mark Reynolds was issued with a second yellow card for deliberate handball.

With minutes remaining, an Esmael Goncalves' shot was saved by Dons keeper Jamie Langfield.

Aberdeen's dismal home form continued as they have now won just three games out of 13 in the SPL at Pittodrie this season.

In fact this match would have ended in defeat had it not been for a brilliant save from Langfield to deny Saints's on-loan striker Goncalves near the end.

As it is, the Dons have scored just one goal in five matches since the winter break and slipped to seventh in the table a week after losing to Hibs in the Scottish Cup.

The Aberdeen supporters did at least see a trophy paraded around Pittodrie but unfortunately for them it was the Ryder Cup.

Celebrity Dons fan Paul Lawrie was given a great reception as he showed the spoils that he did so much to earn in the 'Miracle of Medinah' last year.

That came at half-time and at least gave the supporters something to cheer after an abysmal first half during which neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.

Of course the playing surface didn't help as it was already badly damaged after Scotland's midweek win against Estonia and cut up badly again during the warm up.

It meant neither team was able to get in to their stride with Aberdeen's only effort on target in the opening period coming from a Jonny Hayes 25-yard drive.

That came after a neat interchange between the former Caley Thistle winger and top scorer Niall McGinn but Samson saved comfortably.

Goncalves did look a threat on the odd occasion and Reynolds was booked for pulling back the Rio Ave player.

That was to prove costly when the Dons defender picked up a second caution for deliberate handball 17 minutes from the end and was sent off.

Kenny McLean was back in the St Mirren starting lineup but his burst forward was halted by Russell Anderson.

The midfielder's only other contribution before the break was a caution for blocking Peter Pawlett's run down the right.

The second-half started much more promisingly as an Aberdeen corner broke to Hayes and Samson had to parry clear his 25-yard drive.

Within seconds Langfield was forced into action to fingertip Teale's drive from the edge of the 18-yard box over the bar.

He did even better by blocking at the feet of Goncalves just as he looked certain to score in his fourth game on the trot with just six minutes remaining.
