Gary Rowett celebrated his manager of the month award with a victory as Burton fought back to beat Torquay.
Ryan Jarvis missed two good chances before turning Aaron Downes's header into the net to give the Gulls a lead.
Burton struggled to create chances in the first half, but levelled when Zola drilled in his 12th goal of the season from Billy Kee's pass.
Dean Lyness' double save denied Rene Howe, before substitute Matt Paterson fired in Burton's winner from 22 yards.
VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM:
Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby:
"In the first half, we looked a little bit leggy and we didn't perform with the tempo we showed against Rochdale.
"But Torquay are a good side. They have plenty of energy in their side and I think they'll be up there around the play-off positions.
"We knew that they tended to concede late goals, so when we came in at half time,
"I said 'just keep doing the right things - you only need to get one and then you'll definitely get another'. Thankfully we kept going and did just that."
Torquay United manager Martin Ling told BBC Radio Devon:
"I think the better side got beat on the day if I'm totally honest.
"Last year we found a way of winning games, at this moment in time we seem to have found a way to lose games, and that's not a nice situation to be in.
"As an attacking unit I think that's as well as we've played for a while, but we still throw it away at the other end.
"It's no good talking about play-offs, we've got to start looking over our shoulder a little bit because if we don't start to get wins pretty soon, we'll end up in a relegation fight if we're not careful."
