That's all from me folks. Congratulations to Celtic for reaching the last 16 in the Champions League.

"The players have been magnificent. It is a monumental achievement on their behalf. For the club to be at the big table in the New Year, and to get 10 points, is phenomenal.

"We didn't play well in the first half, but Gary Hooper is such a good goalscorer. We were slack for the goal we conceded but we were much better in the second half. I threw players on because we had to win it. I didn't watch the penalty because I've watched our last couple and we've missed them!

"This campaign has been a great learning process and these young lads have grown as its gone on. This is the premier event, the toughest of the toughest. No-one gave us a prayer going into this group."

So who do Celtic fans want in the last 16? A trip to Malaga for some winter sun or one of the big boys like Man Utd, Juve or Bayern Munich?

"Celtic will be a match for many teams, and I cannot stop praising them for getting to this stage. It is a remarkable achievement. They deserve more credit than you can imagine."

It was a nerve-shredding evening for Celtic fans. Their team were far from their best but got the job done thanks to a rather soft penalty that was fairly thumped home by Kris Commons.

Over in Barcelona, Benfica were all over the home side in the first 45 minutes and had a player clean through right at the death but they could not find the net.

Spartak have run out of gas. Celtic's big worry is a goal for Benfica over in Barcelona. The Portuguese side are swarming forward.

Five minutes of added on time are signalled at Celtic Park. It's the same at the Nou Camp.

Well, maybe I spoke too soon. It looks like it will be 10 v 10 for the last few minutes. Kris Commons is struggling after that high challenge and Celtic have used up their three substitutions.

Lionel Messi leaves the Nou Camp pitch on a stretcher, which will mean some agonising time added on in the Catalan capital.

Fraser Forster slices a back-pass from Kelvin Wilson to scare the life out of 60,000 Celtic fans but the ball spins out of harm's way and a huge collective sigh of relief can be heard for miles around the stadium.

Neil Lennon is out on the touchline waving his players on. This should be a grandstand finish.

Corner number six from Celtic is followed swiftly by number seven and Efe Ambrose heads into the side-netting from the angle of the six yard box.

Spartak have lost their earlier passing fluency but Celtic are not really clicking either and it's all rather scrappy.

Celtic win their fifth corner of the night but it's a real disappointment as keeper Pesiakov plucks Kris Commons' delivery out of the cold Glasgow sky.

Celtic keeper Fraser Forster gets his gloves dirty for the first time in the second half as Jurado drills in a low shot from 20 yards.

Lionel Messi is on for Barcelona now. That might cheer up nervous Celtic fans...

Charlie Mulgrew whips a high ball into the penalty box and Gary Hooper gets his head on it but it's a weak effort and is easily saved.

Spartak are being pressed back in their own half and have yet to be seen as an attacking force in the second half.

An offside decision comes to the rescue for Celtic and play quickly switches again as Kris Commons combines well with Scott Brown only to see the home skipper scuff a weak shot at goal that is easily cleared by Insaurralde.

Celtic win a free-kick on the right but Kris Commons's delivery is headed clear by a defender in red and Spartak hare up the park on a counter-attack.

TV pictures show us Lionel Messi laughing and joking with the rest of the Barcelona subs. Celtic fans want the wee magician on the park.

Will Neil Lennon make any changes at the break? Joe Ledley could maybe beef up a midfield that has been overrun for long spells. And Tony Watt did the damage against Barcelona.

I've just caught a glimpse of the first-half highlights from the Nou Camp and Benfica really should be ahead. They have hit the post and squandered at least four other excellent chances.

Remember, Celtic need to better the Portuguese side's result to reach the last 16.

Over in Barcelona, Benfica have been all over a fringe home side and are unlucky not to be ahead. There is going to be much fingernail chewing ahead for Celtic fans.

Rod Stewart is in the crowd tonight, sitting just in front of Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish. The old rocker was bawling like a baby when Barcelona were seen off. What will he be like if Celtic prevail again tonight?

Mikael Lustig storms forward from right-back to slip a square pass to Scott Brown on the edge of the penalty box but the skipper's first-time shot sails straight into the gloves of Pesiakov.

Kris Commons hammers a low shot narrowly wide from the edge of the penalty box following a Celtic corner.

Poor old Juan Insaurralde will not want to see Celtic again for a long while. The Argentine was sent off in Celtic's 3-2 win in Moscow and he gifted Hooper that shooting chance. Still, it was a fine finish for the striker's 13th goal of the season.

That goal will settle the nerves at Celtic Park. Benfica had made a bright start at the Nou Camp, with Lima heading wide from close range.

Spartak striker Emenike gets in behind the Celtic defence on the right edge of the penalty box and blazes a wild shot high and wide.

Soon after, the same player is hacked down by Kelvin Wilson as he sprints down the left but Felix the ref just waves play on.

Spartak's Swedish international Kim Kallstrom strides forward and plays a neat one-two before slipping a first-time strike a couple of feet wide from 20 yards.

Dmitri Kombarov delivers a dangerous low cross into the Celtic penalty box and there are a couple of iffy moments as the ball pings around before a home defender can clear.

Samaras gets his napper on the ball this time but his nod into the penalty area has too much fizz on it and bounces straight through to visiting keeper Pesiakov.

Charlie Mulgrew delivers a curling free-kick into the Spartak penalty box but a defender in red beats Georgios Samaras to it and heads clear.

"Spartak have started the game really well, going forward really well. Celtic have got to do something, a shot on target or something, to put them under pressure."

Georgios Samaras is clattered on the halfway line but Felix the ref keeps his cards in his pocket. It's been a lively start, with the home side looking a little jittery.

An early move from the visitors is brought to a crude end by a late challenge from Kris Commons. Spartak move the free-kick to Dmitri Kombarov, who blazes a long-range effort high over the crossbar.

Spartak have settled quickly and are knocking the ball around confidently.

The Champions League anthem is finished and handshakes are being exchanged. Just a few minutes to go now...

Of course, this is not unknown territory for Celtic. The Glasgow side reached the last 16 of the tournament in seasons 06/07 and 07/08, losing in the knock-out phase to AC Milan and Barcelona, respectively.

The scarves are aloft and the home fans are belting out the Gerry and the Pacemakers' favourite. It's loud. Very loud.

Barcelona's brothers Thiago and Rafinha Alcantara will be up against their cousin - Benfica striker Rodrigo - at the Nou Camp.

"I am not concerned with what other teams are doing in the competition.

"I am concerned with my own team and how they play evening, and regardless of whether Barcelona leave six players out, the six players who come in will be quality.

"What I want is for us to win the game and that would mean Benfica would have to win in Barcelona."

"No one gave us a prayer coming into the competition.

"There were people saying we wouldn't get a point and people saying we wouldn't get into the Europa League but we felt that we had a decent chance and that's what we have given ourselves.

"However, regardless of the outcome, we will have European football in the new year and that was one of the targets going into the group!"

Neil Lennon's side may have beaten Barcelona at Celtic Park but they have been struggling on the home front domestically. Since that win over the mighty Catalans, Celtic have lost to Inverness and drawn with St Johnstone and the part-timers of Arbroath.

Spartak have been to the east end of Glasgow before. The match in 2007 ended up a 1-1 draw, with Celtic prevailing after a penalty shoot-out. Captain Scott Brown is the only home player who was on show that night. Aiden McGeady also featured but he is now in the enemy camp, having moved to the Russian capital two years ago.

Celtic fans will be keeping an nervous eye / ear on what's happening at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona have rested several of their superstars, including midfield maestros Xavi, Iniesta and Fabregas. Goalkeeper Valdes also gets a night off and the main man Lionel Messi is among the substitutes.

There may be a few nervous gulps among Celtic fans on seeing a Barca front three of Planas, Rafinha and Tello...

Celtic are locked on seven points with Benfica behind section winners Barcelona but the Portuguese have a better head-to-head, having drawn in Glasgow and won in Lisbon.

So the sums are pretty simple. Celtic must better Benfica's result in Barcelona in order to progress to the last 16 of the tournament.

If they fall short tonight, Neil Lennon's men will finish up in third place and drop into the Europa League.
