Gateshead's seven-game unbeaten run came to an end with defeat at struggling Braintree Town.

Sean Marks opened the scoring for the home side when his 25-yard strike found the top right corner of the net.

Promotion-chasing Gateshead levelled matters when Ryan Donaldson headed home a Josh Gillies cross.

Braintree though were rewarded for a bright start to the second half when Dean Wells turned in a Daniel Sparkes corner securing all three points.

VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Braintree Town manager Alan Devonshire told BBC Essex:

Improved display pleases Devonshire

"It was a hundred times better but I expected it anyway. We moan sometimes about playing Saturday-Tuesday but the one thing it does is keep the sharpness and fitness up and the full-time, part-time gap is smaller then.

"When you are not playing for two and a half weeks it does hurt us. It was a poor performance on Tuesday (at Lincoln), no excuses for it, but I knew we would be better today, luckily I was proved right."

"They did what we asked and I'm delighted for them.

"This has given them a nice little boost for Tuesday (against Tranmere in the FA Cup). We've got nothing to lose and we can have a go and enjoy the occasion."
