As it happened

  1. 2205:

I'm going to sign off now. Congratulations to Hearts and Inverness.

Thank you for your company and all of your contributions. Good night.

  2. 2202:

Celtic, runners-up in the last two League Cup finals, will be huge favourites to go one better this time but Neil Lennon's side lost to Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-finals last season, while Inverness have had a few famous wins against the Glasgow giants.

  3. 2159:

Phew, that was tense! That miss at the end from Sean Dillon was miles wide...

The teams left standing in the League Cup are Inverness, Hearts, Celtic and St Mirren, with the semi-final draw being made on Thursday 8 November.

  4. 2156:
Hearts win 5-4 on penaltiesFULL-TIME- Dundee Utd 1-1 Hearts

Hearts missed their first two penalties, Danny Grainger and Chris Sutton the culprits, but it's the Edinburgh side who come out on top.

Gary Mackay-Steven, John Rankin and Sean Dillon were the men to fail from the spot for United.

  5. 2149:
    Hearts 5-4 Dundee UtdPENALTY SHOOT-OUT

Hearts: Grainger - miss, Sutton - miss, Webster - scores, Driver - scores, R McGowan - scores, Robinson - scores, Zaliukas - scores

Dundee Utd: - Russell - scores, Mackay-Steven - miss, Rankin - miss, Gunning - scores, McLean - scores, Armstrong - scores, Dillon - miss

  6. 2146:
    Dundee Utd 1-1 Hearts

It's a penalty shoot-out at Tannadice. Its not been much of a game but we'll have some drama to finish the evening off.

BBC Scotland's Brian McLauchlin on Twitter: "Looks like penalties required at Tannadice between Dundee United and Hearts. Who do you fancy?"

  8. 2142:

United go so close to a late, late winner as a John Rankin special cannons off the post from all of 30 yards!

  9. 2139:

Gary Mackay-Steven does well to cut the ball back from the byeline and it falls to Rudi Skacel 10 yards from goal in line with the front post. The Czech international makes a good connection but his shot flies a couple of feet high and wide.

  10. 2138:

United are seeing more of the ball but have not really tested Hearts keeper Jamie Macdonald since Darren Barr's dismissal. The visitors stage a late break but substitute Andrew Driver drags his shot well off target.

  11. 2136:
St Mirren striker Steven Thompson at Ibrox for BBC Scotland

"Inverness really dominated that second half. Rangers were slack after the interval, devoid of any ideas. They have been poor defensively and the result is justified. It could have been more for Inverness."

  12. 2133:
    FULL-TIME- Rangers 0-3 Inverness

Inverness reach the last four of the League Cup for the first time after a thoroughly deserved win at Ibrox. Former Rangers pair Andrew and Graeme Shinnie were on target either side of Gary Warren's header.

  13. 2131:

A John Rankin shot has Hearts keeper Jamie Macdonald at full-stretch, although the ball may have been going wide. Rudi Skacel is sniffing around the loose ball but had strayed offside.

  14. 2130:
BBC Scotland pundit Billy Dodds at Tannadice

"Dundee United need to move the ball quickly but they've not done that. It's half-time in extra-time and Hearts are still comfortable."

  15. 2129:

The second half of extra-time is about to kick-off at Tannadice. It's been a tough watch, this one...

  16. 2127:

Barrie McKay tests Antonio Reguero with a stinging shot but the Inverness keeper is able to gather at the second attempt.

  17. 2124:

Rudi Skacel has not made much of an impact since coming on. I'm not sure he has even touched the ball. How will he feel if he has to take a penalty against his old team?

  18. 2122:

United and Hearts continue to huff and puff in aimless fashion, with both teams guilty of too many hopeful, long punts up the park.

  19. 2120:
BBC Scotland's Al Lamont at Ibrox

"Inverness Caley Thistle are moving into the last four and few could argue with that. They have been more incisive in the final third than Rangers and their defence has coped far better with the opposition threat."

  20. 2118:
GOAL- Rangers 0-3 Inverness (G Shinnie)

Graeme Shinnie takes over the penalty duties from brother Andy and coolly converts from the spot. Game over now, surely.

  21. 2117:

Inverness win a penalty as Andrew Shinnie tumbles under a rash challenge from Argyriou.

  22. 2115:

Here we go. Calling number 51. Rudi Skacel is coming off the bench for United. Richie Ryan makes way. The visiting fans are definitely more excited about that switch than the home supporters.

  23. 2114:

United are not managing to stretch the play against the 10 men of Hearts. Winger Gary Mackay-Steven, on as a second-half substitute, looks rusty after his long lay-off through injury.

  24. 2112:

Inverness striker Billy McKay is clean through again but he can't find a way past Neil Alexander, who spreads himself well to make the save.

  25. 2107:
EXTRA TIME- Dundee Utd 1-1 Hearts

We'll be getting an extra half hour at Tannadice. Can Hearts hold on with 10 men and will Rudi Skacel get off the United bench to face his old side?

  26. 2106:

Chris Hegarty plays a shocker of a back-pass which gives Inverness striker Billy McKay a glorious opportunity to make it 3-0. Neil Alexander is off his line in a flash to save near the penalty spot and keeps his team in it, just.

  27. 2103:

Rangers throw on striker Kevin Kyle and Barrie McKay, with Dean Shiels and Kyle Hutton the men to make way.

  28. 2059:
    GOAL- Rangers 0-2 Inverness (Warren)

The Rangers defence are posted missing as Gary Warren stoops to head home a low cross from Graeme Shinnie.

  29. 2058:

It's looking rather extra-timish at Tannadice as 10-man Hearts dig in for the last seven minutes or so of regulation time.

  30. 2057:

A chorus of boos from the Ibrox crowd as Inverness defender David Raven escapes with a warning for a trip on Dean Shiels just minutes after receiving a yellow card.

  31. 2055:

Rangers have the first clear opening of the second half as they seek to get back on level terms. Lee McCulloch volleys over from Andy Little's cross.

  32. 2053:

Hearts are down to 10 men as Darren Barr is shown a second yellow card as Johnny Russell nips in and beats him to the ball. The midfielder was late but there was nothing much in the challenge.

Robbie Devenney on Twitter: "I would have put money on this game coming down to a Skacel penalty, still would. #bbcsportsound"

Rudi remains on the United bench for now...

  34. 2051:

It's been a fractured start to the second half at Ibrox. Plenty of free-kicks but little action in the opening five minutes.

  35. 2050:

Novikovas drills in a strike from 22 yards as Hearts enjoy a good spell but Cierzniak flops down to make a comfortable save.

  36. 2049:

Hearts full-back Danny Grainger swings in an inviting cross from the left and a header from Darren Barr skims wide from 10 yards.

John McCook on Twitter: "Good to see Dundee Utd and Hearts fans taking part in Halloween... all dressing up as empty seats! #bbcsportsound"

  38. 2047:

The attendance at Tannadice is a very disappointing 3,789. The game has definitely suffered from a lack of atmosphere.

  39. 2045:

The action is back under way at Ibrox. Rangers make a change, with Anestis Argyriou on for Ross Perry.

  40. 2042:

United winger Gary Mackay-Steven is just on the park, replacing Michael Gardyne, and he is clattered by Andrew Webster before he has touched the ball. The Hearts defender was a bit naughty, leading with an elbow...

  41. 2038:
BBC Scotland's Al Lamont at Ibrox

"It's been a pretty even match at Ibrox so far, but ICT have been clinical, crucially, on the one occasion they created a clear-cut opportunity. Rangers, on the other hand, have played some decent football but have only properly tested Antonio Reguero once - and he was equal to that. Interesting second half in prospect."

  42. 2036:

Cierzniak looks cool as a cucumber as a fantastic overhead kick from Callum Paterson rattles the base of the post and flies straight into the arms of the motionless United keeper.

  43. 2034:

Mehdi Taouil curls a smart free-kick over the defensive wall but it's straight at United keeper Cierzniak, who makes a bit of a meal of it, flapping the ball away to safety.

  44. 2033:

Hearts' Darren Barr picks up a daft yellow card for tugging back Willo Flood in the centre circle. The United player is so slight, he could have just blown him over.

  45. 2031:

United midfieder Stuart Armgstong shows good strength to cut in from the left and flash a fierce shot across goal from the junction of the penalty box.

  46. 2030:
    HALF-TIME- Rangers 0-1 Inverness

It's been a cracking game at Ibrox, with both sides attacking with pace and imagination. Inverness are ahead thanks to a cool finish from Andrew Shinnie.

  47. 2028:

Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson trudges off to be replaced by Scott Robinson (not to be confused with the Jason Donovan character from Neighbours).

  48. 2027:

The game at Ibrox has slowed down slightly since Inverness took the lead. A Chris Hegarty header from a Lee Wallace free-kick dips just over the bar as Rangers seek to get back on level terms.

BBC Scotland's Brian McLauchlin on Twitter: "Celtic boss Neil Lennon watching Dundee Utd v Hearts from Tannadice directors box #bbcsportsound"

Celtic, who demolished St Johnstone 5-0 last night, take on United at the weekend.

  50. 2024:

The video stream of the action from Tannadice has spluttered back to life...

  51. 2022:

Hearts keeper Jamie Macdonald punches clear a cross from Dundee United defender Gavin Gunning and when the ball falls to Stuart Armstrong on the edge of the penalty area the midfielder can only scuff a first-time shot wide.

  52. 2021:
BBC Scotland pundit Craig Paterson at Ibrox

"Everything good about Caley Thistle; Aaron Doran is involved. He seems to find areas where he's not picked up, he's like an absolute magnet for the ball. Every time he gets it he's making things happen, he's getting balls into the box, linking with players and he's someone Rangers have to watch because at the moment he's running the game."

  53. 2020:

Dundee United get the second half up and running at Tannadice.

  54. 2017:

Rangers' Lee McCulloch has already bagged his best goals return ever. He almost nicks his 15th of the season, his glancing header from an Ian Black corner goes just wide.

  55. 2016:

Inverness are playing well, with Aaron Doran heavily involved, and they have a very decent record at Ibrox, having lost only five times in their previous 11 visits.

  56. 2012:
GOAL- Rangers 0-1 Inverness (A Shinnie)

Gary Warren intercepts the ball and feeds Aaron Doran who links with Billy McKay. His through ball finds former Rangers man Andrew Shinnie who has the composure to shoot Terry Butcher's side ahead.

  57. 2008:

Rangers keep the pressure up at Ibrox and Lewis McLeod's effort flies inches wide of the upright.

  58. 2006:

Rangers should be ahead as Andy Little is played through by his Northern Ireland compratiot Dean Shiels but his effort is stopped by the legs of Inverness keeper Reguero.

  59. 2005:
St Mirren striker Steven Thompson at Ibrox for BBC Scotland

"It's really end to end stuff, it's brilliant, it's entartaining, both team's counter-attacking."

  60. 2004:
    HALF-TIME- Dundee Utd 1-1 Hearts

Hearts will be scratching their heads at the scoreline, having dominated much of the first 45 minutes at Tannadice. Callum Paterson shot the visitors ahead but Johnny Russell levelled with just about United's only glimpse of goal.

  61. 2004:

Rangers break forward, the ball comes to Lewis McLeod whose effort at goal is spilled by Inverness keeper Antonio Reguero but the Spaniard gathered at the second attempt.

  62. 2002:

Callum Paterson gets up highest in a busy penalty area to reach a long-throw from Ryan McGowan but the Hearts striker's header slides wide of the back post.

Heart of Midlothian on Twitter: "An announcement goes up around the ground asking for a supporter to go home as his wife has gone into labour! #dedication"

  64. 1959:

It looks like the online stream of the Dundee United v Hearts game is gubbed. That's the technical term, I believe. If it comes back to life, I'll include it at the top of the page again. Massive apologies...

  65. 1958:

Neil Alexander is in fine fettle tonight. He saves this time from a Billy McKay drive. Inverness are looking the more likely at this stage.

  66. 1956:

Ross Perry clears Andrew Shinnie's free-kick away but the ball is returned to the box and Neil Alexander makes a magnificent save from Gary Warren's header. A linesman's flag was up but the Rangers keeper wasn't to know.

  67. 1953:

It's Rangers with a shot from distance this time, but captain Lee McCulloch's shot is rising all the time and it doesn't trouble Inverness keeper Antonio Reguero.

  68. 1952:
GOAL- Dundee Utd 1-1 Hearts (Russell)

Completely out of the blue, United are level as a shot on the turn from Michael Gardyne is blocked by Andy Webster and falls kindly for Johnny Russell, who fires in the loose ball from 14 yards.

  69. 1951:

Mehdi Taouil goes close with a smart shot from 20 yards. It's still Hearts doing all the pressing at Tannadice.

  70. 1950:

Inverness midfielder Andrew Shinnie fires in a ferocious shot that is palmed away by Neil Alexander and the Rangers keeper is alert to stop the follow-up effort from Aaron Doran.

  71. 1949:

This is Inverness Caley Thistle's fifth League Cup quarter-final. All of them have been away from home and the Highlanders have lost their previous four.

  72. 1946:

Hearts left-back Danny Grainger jinks into the United penalty area and hammers in a fierce shot that Cierzniak beats away at his near post.

  73. 1945:

Inverness get the game started at Ibrox.

BBC Scotland's Brian McLaughlin on Twitter: "Hearts just about deserving their lead at Tannadice. Paterson did well to reach the ball ahead of Cierzniak #bbcsportsound"

  75. 1943:

There appears to be a technical glitch with the online stream of the match from Tannadice. Apologies. The boffins are on the case...

  76. 1942:
St Mirren striker Steven Thompson on BBC Radio Scotland

"That fear factor has possibly gone. You still have the massive crowd and that will help the Rangers players, but the fear factor as a player has gone. Inverness are on a fine run of form and will fancy their chances. The tempo Rangers had against Motherwell was incredible and they will be looking to do the same again."

  77. 1937:
GOAL- Dundee Utd 0-1 Hearts (Paterson)

Hearts are ahead as Callum Paterson prods the ball home from close range, diverting home a low, driven cross from Ryan Stevenson. United keeper Cierzniak looked a bit slow getting down.

  78. 1934:

We have a break in play at Tannadice as Hearts' Ryan Stevenson receives treatment after a clash of heads with Sean Dillon. The United defender just gives his napper a rub and gets on with it.

  79. 1933:

United skipper Jon Daly has a pot at goal but the ball flies harmlessly over. This game has yet to spark into life. That might have something to do with the small crowd.

  80. 1931:

Rangers swept past East Fife and Falkirk in the opening rounds before turning in what has probably been their best performance of the season to cuff Motherwell 2-0 at Ibrox.

Inverness survived a scare at Stenhousemuir in the last round, eventually prevailing after a penalty shoot-out.

  81. 1930:
BBC Scotland's Alasdair Lamont at Ibrox

"Can Rangers produce a display akin to the one that knocked Motherwell out in the last round? ICT have a strong team out as they attempt to ensure it's them that join St Mirren, Celtic and either Hearts or United in the semi-final draw."

  82. 1929:

United keeper Cierzniak punches clear from a Novikovas cross as the first 10 minutes pass without too much fuss.

  83. 1926:

United midfielder Richie Ryan is the first name in referee Calum Murray's book for a late challenge on Ryan McGowan.

  84. 1925:
Inverness manager Terry Butcher on BBC Scotland

"It will be a great experience for the players and we've come to enjoy it.

"We have scored in every game we've played since July and I'm sure there will be goals again tonight. I just hope we score more than Rangers.

"We've done pretty well this season but we've not achieved anything yet."

  85. 1922:

Hearts have been doing all the early pressing at Tannadice but United keeper Cierzniak is yet to get his gloves dirty.

  86. 1920:

Rangers: Alexander, Hegarty, Perry, Emilson Cribari, Wallace, Hutton, Black, Macleod, Little, McCulloch, Shiels. Subs: Scott Gallagher, Argyriou, Kyle, Aird, McKay.

Inverness CT: Reguero, Raven, Warren, Meekings, Graeme Shinnie, Doran, Tudur Jones, Draper, Roberts, Andrew Shinnie, McKay. Subs: Esson, Foran, Sutherland, Pepper, Cooper.

    Referee: Steven McLean

  87. 1918:

Hearts are first to threaten with Novikovas flashing a shot narrowly wide from 20 yards after collecting a chest-pass from Sutton.

  88. 1917:

The game is up and running. United are in their usual tangerine, while Hearts have got their white away kit on.

There are an awful lot of empty seats at Tannadice...

  89. 1914:

Quick stat attack before kick off: Dundee United and Hearts have not met in the League Cup since the 1984/85 semi-final which United won 5-2 on aggregate.

Hearts have not won a cup game at Tannadice since winning a League Cup tie 3-2 in August 1969.

  90. 1912:
Hearts manager John McGlynn on BBC Scotland

"A one-goal victory would be enough tonight and I would be happy with that. But we want to score goals and that's why I've put John Sutton back in the side to give us that wee edge."

  91. 1911:
Dundee Utd manager Peter Houston on BBC Scotland

"When I look back at the side I played that day (3-0 loss last month), I quickly realised I picked the wrong side. We played two guys wide. But we've learned lessons and will try to deny Hearts the space to create from midfield."

  92. 1908:
    BBC Scotland pundit Pat Nevin

"When you look at that Hearts team, they have Taouil, Stevenson and Novikovas in midfield, who are all attack-minded players, as well as two up front. So I think John McGlynn has looked at this and decided to have a right go.

"If you look at Dundee United's line-up, it is the Johnny Russell show and they are hoping he can do something on his own up front."

  93. 1907:
Scotland manager Craig Levein on BBC Scotland

"I'm hugely proud to be Scotland manager and want to continue doing the job. I had a chat with Stewart Regan and Campbell Ogilvie and I'll find out one way or the other early next week. The squad for the Luxembourg will be named on Tuesday and there will be an announcement before then."

  94. 1905:

Dundee Utd: Cierzniak, Watson, Dillon, Daly, Gunning, Flood, Ryan, Rankin, Armstrong, Gardyne, Russell. Subs: Banks, McLean, Mackay-Steven, Millar, Skacel.

Hearts: MacDonald, Ryan McGowan, Webster, Zaliukas, Grainger, Stevenson, Barr, Taouil, Paterson, Sutton, Novikovas. Subs: Enckelman, Robinson, Driver, Gordon Smith, Dylan McGowan.

    Referee: Calum Murray

  95. 1903:

The BBC One Scotland coverage from Tannadice should be on the top of this page now (unless you live outside the UK). If it's not, give your computer a dunt.

  96. 1900:

On the telly, under-fire Scotland boss Craig Levein reiterates his desire to stay on and gulps rather nervously before saying he should discover the outcome of the SFA board talks sometime early next week.

  97. 1859:

The Rudi Skacel fun continues, with BBC pundit John Robertson informing us of the odds on the Czech midfielder scoring tonight. I won't bother insulting you by revealing the figure...

  98. 1857:

Inverness captain Richie Foran is on the bench at Ibrox as manager Terry Butcher sticks with his in-form starting XI.

  99. 1856:

With no European place for the winner any more, the League Cup often gets belittled, usually by fans of teams who have been knocked out of the competition, but there have been a few cracking ties this season and we've had an average of 3.5 goals scored per game.

  100. 1853:

Since the League Cup began in 1946/47, 13 clubs have hand their hands on the trophy. St Mirren and Inverness are the only teams still standing who have yet to win it. Could this be the year for the Buddies or Caley Thistle?

  101. 1850:

Rangers stick with the same XI that started in Sunday's 2-0 win at Clyde.

Ian in Ediburgh by text on 80295: "To all you poor wee sensitive souls, lighten up. The only person who may end up with egg on his face is Rudi Skacel himself. Even the bookies were joining in the fun by puting odds in their shop windows for Dundee United to win 5-1."

Mr Skacel's number choice (51) has certainly been a hot topic. He is sure to get a good reception from the visiting fans should be make an appearance.

  103. 1846:

Scotland manager Craig Levein is a guest for tonight's television coverage from Tannadice. His future is being discussed by Scottish FA this week now that the World Cup dream is in tatters. Is he being brave popping up on telly or does he know his job is safe?

  104. 1843:

Hearts won 3-0 at Tannadice last month, with teenager Callum Paterson scoring twice. The visit before that ended in a 2-2 draw with Skacel on target for the Jambos in a 2-2 draw.

  105. 1839:

So, former Hearts darling Rudi Skacel is on the bench for United and he is joined by exciting winger Gary Mackay-Steven, who has been out for a long time after knee surgery.

  106. 1837:
BBC Scotland pundit John Robertson from Tannadice

"You can't pick a favourite here. Tonight, I have the problem of the team I tipped to win the League Cup (United) playing against the team I would like to win it (former club Hearts). And I have to stand by my tip."

  107. 1835:

One change from the Hearts starting XI as striker John Sutton replaces winger Andrew Driver. United also make one alteration, with Richie Ryan taking Mark Millar's place in midfield. Full teams to follow...

  108. 1832:

The match at Tannadice is being broadcast live on BBC One Scotland and you will be able to watch the action on the BBC Sport website as well. I'll stick the video at the top of this page once the programme gets under way.

  109. 1830:

Happy Halloween and welcome to our Scottish Communities League Cup coverage. Dundee United host Hearts and Rangers take on Inverness with semi-final spots up for grabs. Celtic and St Mirren booked their places in the last four last night.
