Paul Jewell remains Ipswich Town boss after Marcus Evans backing

 

Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell has said he will remain in charge at Portman Road after receiving reassurances from owner Marcus Evans.

Jewell said he would consider his future after Saturday's 2-1 loss at Hull.

And subsequent reports have suggested Evans was lining up a replacement.

But Jewell told BBC Radio Suffolk: "We have a really open and honest relationship. If he was looking for somebody he would have told me.

"He wants me to stay. I want to stay."

Town are 23rd in the Championship, four points adrift of safety, and are winless in 10 games.

It is a situation that led Jewell to say he would "think seriously" about his future after watching his side concede an injury-time winner to the Tigers.

"It's always difficult when you're doing interviews after the game and you're emotionally charged," he said at Monday's news conference for the midweek visit of Derby.

"I've had a lot of calls and texts from top managers - managers I've known for a long time and some I don't even know. It made me think 'it's not going well but I've got to have the confidence I can turn it around'.

"I have the confidence in the team. I think it's good enough. I don't want to roll over. I want to give it everything I've got.

"After speaking to Marcus and staff close to me here, for the time being I'm going to try and come through this bad run and out the other side.

"I've got promotion before and stayed in the Premier League before against the odds. I'm having a really tough time of it now.

"But nothing comes easy in life and I'm going to fight until I haven't got any fight left in me or I'm told otherwise."

Ipswich's only victory in the Championship so far this season was a 1-0 win at Watford in their second game of the campaign.

Jewell took Bradford to the Premier League in 1999 and also led Wigan Athletic to two promotions in three years and into the top flight for the first time in their history.

The 48-year-old, who also managed Sheffield Wednesday, took over at Portman Road in January 2011.
