Southend and York played out a dire goalless draw of few clear-cut chances in League Two.

Jason Walker, standing unmarked and six yards from goal, headed Matty Blair's right-wing cross wide of the post after the break.

Blair then raced through on goal but was twice denied by sprawling Shrimpers keeper Paul Smith.

Chris Barker headed over for the hosts late on and Kevan Hurst fired wastefully off target at the death.

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:

"I thought our first half was a hangover from Tuesday night (a defeat at home to Aldershot). I did feel that the players looked a bit tentative and there was a lot of passes went astray.

"But the second half I felt that the players got on top of York, and the last 15 to 20 minutes there was only going to be one team winning that game.

"I thought the players felt a bit sorry for themselves early on in the game, but as it unfolded I thought we started to get near how we were playing earlier in the season.

"We put a lot of crosses into the box but things didn't drop for us."

York City manager Gary Mills told BBC Radio York:

"I thought we were excellent; [after playing] three games in a week and on this long journey, coming down here and playing how we played. I thought the first half was outstanding.

"I thought our movement, the way we kept the ball, opened them up... Our final ball in the last third let us down again which we've said on a few occasions this season, but we keep doing it, we keep getting in that last third and opening teams up.

"When we had to dig in second half and head it away at the back we did so, so we deserved the point. We could have had three but we definitely deserved a point, there's no two ways about that."
