Gillingham overcame Aldershot to extend their lead at the top of League Two.

Charlie Allen fired the Gills ahead with his first goal for the club, before Danny Kedwell's penalty doubled the lead after Sonny Bradley handled.

Kedwell played a part in the hosts' third, setting up Myles Weston to put the result beyond doubt.

Danny Hylton did have an effort cleared off the line for Shots, before Chris Whelpdale's strike went in off the post to wrap up proceedings.

On-loan striker Robbie Findley, who is still looking to find the net for the Gills, almost scored with his first touch but saw his low drive saved by Shots keeper Jamie Young.

The visitors did come back into the game more after the fourth goal though, but could not find their goalscoring touch, with Hylton firing just past the post when through on goal.

With second-placed Port Vale not playing until Monday, Gillingham's victory moves them six points clear at the top of League Two.

But in stark contrast, defeat for the Shots means they lie within the relegation zone, and extends their run without a point in the league to four matches.

Gillingham manager Martin Allen told BBC Radio Kent:

"I'm absolutely delighted. We had a great attitude from the players, some fantastic football and it's been a really good day for our players.

"It's a good marker. We're six points clear so it's good.

"We do play some good stuff. They've got some dangerous players, Dean will get good results and let's hope there are not stupid reactions. They're impatient, supporters and boards.

"It's unbelievable. No one knew this was going to happen. It's an incredible start."

Aldershot Town manager Dean Holdsworth told BBC Surrey:

"There is a togetherness and the light hasn't gone out on this team or these players yet.

"There's still more and we know we need to defend better.

"There were some positives from the game.

"It's going to take all our character and take a lot of hard work but we're ready for it and we're ready for this challenge and confidence is key."
