Roy Hodgson expected to explain Rio Ferdinand comments

Roy Hodgson is expected to explain why he discussed Rio Ferdinand's England future with London Underground passengers at 14:00 BST on Thursday.

The Daily Mirror  has reported Hodgson revealed details about the Manchester United defender's England career.

Ferdinand last played for his country in June 2011 and was omitted from Euro 2012 for "footballing reasons".

Earlier on Thursday, Ferdinand, who has 81 caps, was not named in the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Hodgson is alleged to have discussed Ferdinand's England future on the tube train on his way to watch Arsenal play Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Following John Terry's international retirement many felt it could pave the way for Ferdinand, 34, to return.

Speaking in June, after Ferdinand was left out of the squad that travelled to Poland and the Ukraine, Hodgson said that Manchester United defender has "no reason to fear for his international future".

"All the time he's playing, I'll keep watching," he added.
