As it happened

  1. 1908:

That's all from me tonight folks. What an evening of drama in Moscow, with Celtic taking three points from 10-man Spartak in a five-goal thriller.

You can read Andy Campbell's match report here and we'll have reaction from manager Neil Lennon later.

Enjoy the rest of your evening and thanks for all of your contributions.

  2. 1906:
Former Celtic star Murdo MacLeod on BBC Radio Scotland

"The team's work-rate is fantastic. I don't think there's a player you can look at and say, 'they didn't perform'."

  3.

Sam Michie: "#bbcsportsound Absolutely ecstatic, wonderful result from the Bhoys tonight! Great for Celtic and Scottish football as a whole."

  4.

Laura Martin (re earlier entry around 17:13): "left the library... good decision!! yaaassssss #bbcsportsound"

  5. 1901:

Apologies for some earlier duff information. Victor Wanyama is not suspended for Celtic's trip to the Nou Camp. You need three bookings for a ban at this stage.

  6. 1900:

Celtic top Group G with four points from their first two games. Barcelona or Benfica can overtake them with a win in Portugal later on.

  7.
    BBC Scotland's Al Lamont

"Excellent, much-improved Champions League performance from Celtic this evening."

  8.

Aiden in Co. Antrim: "Just excused myself from my night class to go to the toilet and go nuts!"

  9. 1855:
    FULL-TIME- Spartak Moscow 2-3 Celtic

Celtic pick up a first away win in the Champions League group phase thanks to goals from Gary Hooper and Georgios Samaras and an own goal from Dmitri Kombarov.

  10. 1854:

James Forrest darts into the six-yard box after picking a pass from Scott Brown but there is no way past keeper Pesiakov and his pass on the stretch is cleared by the men in red.

  11. 1853:

Deep into the five minutes of time added on. Surely Celtic will hold on for a first Champions League away win.

  12. 1851:

Panic stations in the Celtic penalty area as the ball is hacked off the toes of Spartak striker Emenike.

  13. 1849:
GOAL- Spartak Moscow 2-3 Celtic (Samaras)

Patience pays off for Celtic as Emilio Izaguirre delivers a peach of a cross for Georgios Samaras to nod home from 10 yards out.

  14. 1847:

Gary Hooper is slipped a nice pass from Kris Commons but is never going to score from a wide angle and the deflected shot is snaffled up by Pesiakov.

  15. 1846:

Spartak forward Ari is off, with the fresh-faced Kozlov his replacement.

  16. 1844:

Celtic sub Joe Ledley lets fly with a shot from distance and Pesiakov gets fingertips to it, although it might have been going over anyway. The keeper makes a comfortable save from the resulting corner.

  17. 1842:

Celtic are stretching play with some prolonged passing and there is a weak appeal for a penalty as Hooper goes over, claiming his jersey was tugged.

  18. 1840:

Spartak may be down to 10 men but the hosts are not sitting back. It should be a humdinger of finish in Moscow.

  19. 1839:

Celtic midfielder Joe Ledley is on for the final 12 minutes or so. Charlie Mulgrew exits...

  20. 1835:

Spartak make another change and it's Aiden McGeady trudging off to be replaced by Artem Dzjuba. The former Celtic darling has had a very quiet night.

  21. 1833:

It's all Celtic now as Kris Commons drills a low cross into the penalty area and Dmitri Kombarov, fresh from that own goal, slides in to clear.

  22. 1830:
GOAL- Spartak Moscow 2-2 Celtic (Komnarov o.g)

Georgios Samaras dummies a low cross from Mulgrew, allowing Hooper to gather the ball and turn near the penalty spot before laying it off to Forrest, who slams in a shot that is saved but rebounds back into the net off defender Dmitri Kombarov.

  23. 1829:

Victor Wanyama is the man to make way for Forrest. Can the nippy winger help haul Celtic back into this game?

  24. 1827:

During that long wait for Mulgrew's free kick, Spartak replaced midfielder De Zeeuw with defender Bryzgalov. James Forrest is ready to come on for Celtic.

  25. 1826:

Mulgrew gets his effort up and over the defensive wall but it's straight at Pesiakov and the keeper punches it away.

  26. 1825:

    Still waiting...

  27. 1824:

After a long wait, Charlie Mulgrew is lining up a free kick 20 yards out.

  28. 1821:
    RED CARD

Gary Hooper is cynically chopped down as he races in goal and, after a consultation with his assistant, referee Tony Chapron shows Juan Insaurralde a red card.

  29. 1819:

Georgios Samaras races towards the Spartak penalty box but will need to work on his shimmying skills as he bundles straight into an opponent and a promising attack breaks down.

  30. 1817:

Georgios Samaras is caught by a stray elbow and Charlie Mulgrew arrows in a fierce free kick which is headed wide of the target by Efe Ambrose.

  31. 1815:

Kris Commons is breathing hard on the artificial turf after a clumsy tackle from behind. Joe Ledley and James Forrest are warming up on the sidelines.

  32. 1813:

Maybe I was being a bit harsh on Forster, who had to get down quickly to stop the deflected shot, but it looked like he could have turned it round for a corner.

  33. 1811:

Can Celtic respond? Going behind will force them to attack and Spartak do not look too clever at the back.

  34. 1807:
GOAL- Spartak Moscow 2-1 Celtic (Emenike)

Oh dear. Fraser Forster will not want to see that again. The big Celtic keeper makes a sprawling save to keep out a deflected strike from Ari, that looked like it was going wide, but can only push it to De Zeeuw, who trundles the ball back across goal for Emmanuel Emenike to prod over the line.

  35. 1804:

The second half is up and running in Moscow. No changes in personnel.

  36. 1801:
Former Celtic star Murdo MacLeod on BBC Radio Scotland

"At this level, you shouldn't be playing on astroturf."

I haven't noticed any Celtic players struggling with their footing on the artificial surface. I'd forgotten all about it, to be honest.

  37.

Jim in Netherlee: "Anyone else singing Sham 69, when Ari gets the ball? Expecting the commentator to moan about time wasting by shouting, 'hurry up Ari, come on'."

I'm including that weak gag because I'm one of the few old enough to remember the great Sham 69...

  38. 1758:

The pace of Ari must be a concern for Celtic. He showed Kelvin Wilson a clean pair of heels for the Spartak goal. The visitors will need to keep a close eye on the Brazilian-born forward.

  39.

Jonathan Dixon: "looking forward to the second half now if we continue this way. A few more goals should come as Spartaks defence looks shaky #BBCSportsound"

  40.

Nico: "I don't think there is anything more frustrating than a wide attacker hitting the first defender with a cross, Sammy and Izaguerro both guilty. Got to do better in that position."

You can text in using 80295 or tweet with #bbcsportsound.

  41. 1752:

That first-half booking for Victor Wanyama means he will miss the next Group G game, which is the small matter of a trip to somewhere called the Nou Camp, or are you in the Camp Nou camp?

  42.

Sam Ellard: "Every time Celtic go forward they look like scoring. I don't know why they are playing so defensively, should get at Spartak Moscow #bbcsportsound"

You can text in using 80295 or tweet with #bbcsportsound.

  43. 1747:
    HALF-TIME- Spartak Moscow 1-1 Celtic

Gary Hooper fired Celtic into an early lead following a brisk start from the hosts. The Glasgow side were growing in confidence but switched off at the back to let Emmanuel Emenike level. Not the worst 45 minutes for Celtic by any means but it could have been so much better...

  44. 1744:

Georgios Samaras races down the left flank as Celtic flood forward but his cross is cut out by a defender, much to the frustration of striker Gary Hooper, who had taken up a promising position.

  45. 1742:
GOAL- Spartak Moscow 1-1 Celtic (Emenike)

The Celtic defence are caught napping from a high ball over the top as the speedy Ari cuts the ball back for Emmanuel Emenike to slot home from inside the six yard box.

  46. 1740:

Fraser Forster is at full-stretch to push away a curling free kick from Pareja. One for the cameras that save from the big Celtic goalie...

  47. 1739:

Georgios Samaras gets his head to a Kris Commons free kick only to see the ball skid off the turf and into the arms of Spartak keeper Pesiakov.

  48. 1738:

Scott Brown is at his tigerish best in midfield, snapping into tackles. The Celtic skipper is like a shark, he never stops moving.

  49. 1735:

Charlie Mulgrew whips in a free kick from the left but it is repelled by the noggin of red-shirted defender. The home side launch an attack and Emenike is again way off target with a header.

  50.

Chris Shiels: "In a meeting at 9am LA time, sneaky glances at the game aplenty, mon the hoops #bbcsportsound"

You can text in using 80295 or tweet with #bbcsportsound.

  51. 1731:
    YELLOW CARD

Victor Wanyama is booked for clipping the heels of De Zeeuw, Celtic team-mate Charlie Mulgrew picked up a caution earlier for booting the ball away after the ref's whistle had chirped for a foul.

  52.

Euan Black: "#bbcsportsound It's 2.30am in Sydney and I'm working the nightshift... don't think the security guard was too happy when I screamed at 1-0!"

You can text in using 80295 or tweet with #bbcsportsound.

  53. 1728:

Spartak left-back Dmitri Kombarov loves to get forward and his flashing cross picks out striker Emenike but the Nigerian can only get the slightest of touches on the ball with his head and it goes well wide.

  54. 1727:

Mikael Lustig pops up in attack for Celtic again but rushes his cross when he was in acres of room and can't get it past the first defencer. Spartak look a bit wobbly at the back...

  55. 1725:

Gary Hooper has the ball in the net again but the Celtic striker had strayed a half-yard offside before converting a curling cross from Georgios Samaras.

  56.

Joseph Hodgdon: "Just had to stifle a scream of excitement at Celtics goal while sitting in my office doing exciting portal frame designs#bbcsportsound"

Am I the only one doing any work at the moment?

  57.

Aidan in Co. Antrim: "About to start my night class. Happy BBC will keep me updated. Sneaky nervous glances ahead."

  58. 1722:

Kris Commons has a run at the Spartak defence but can't get past the defender on the edge of the penalty box, collapsing in a rather undignified heap.

  59. 1720:

Celtic defender Kelvin Wilson throws himself at a shot from Aiden McGeady, heading behind for yet another home corner.

  60. 1719:

Spartak win another corner but Georgios Samaras is back helping the Celtic defence out and Rafael Carioca can only head wide under pressure from the Greek.

  61. 1717:

The home fans have been stung by that Gary Hooper goal and are roaring their team on, demanding a swift response.

  62.

Stephen: "My colleague is sending me your website updates and making me very nervous at work. Give us a goal Celtic and allow him to get back to his job!"

    Happy to oblige!

  63.

Laura Martin: "#bbcsportsound making the silent section in the library a bit more bearable.. mon the hoops!! "

Hope you haven't been thrown out for yelping when that goal went in...

  64. 1713:
GOAL- Spartak Moscow 0-1 Celtic (Hooper)

Celtic score with their first attack as Victor Wanyama releases right-back Mikael Lustig and Gary Hooper gets in front of his man to divert the Swede's low cross into the net from six yards.

  65. 1713:

It's been a bit of nervous opening but Neil Lennon's side have been very solid in their European outings this season, keeping clean sheets in four of their five games.

Celtic took care of HJK Helsinki and Helsingborgs in the qualifying rounds, winning both of the away ties.

  66.

Sean Caldow: "#bbcsportsound sitting in work chewing my fingers off. c'mon the hoops!"

You can text in using 80295 or tweet with #bbcsportsound.

  67. 1709:

Spartak continue to zip the ball around confidently, with Celtic working hard as a unit to close them down.

  68.

Nico: "This terrible away record has to go sometime, let's do it tonight. Come on the Hoops!"

  69.

Ian in Edinburgh: " Team looks a bit too open. Think we will get run around in midfield."

  70. 1705:

Experienced Swede Kim Kallstrom bursts through a cluster of players, with a sugegstion of handball along the way, only to shoot high over Fraser Forster's crossbar on the stretch from near the penalty spot.

  71. 1704:

Celtic are being pinned back in these opening exchanges as Mikael Lustig heads the ball behind for Spartak's third corner.

  72. 1702:

An early scare for Celtic as Ari spins away from Efe Ambrose but the Celtic defender recovers to make a tackle on the edge of the penalty area.

  73. 1701:
    KICK-OFF

    We're off in Moscow...

  74. 1658:

The Luzhniki Stadium's artificial surface will obviously give the home side an advantage but there a lot of empty seats in the 78,000-capacity ground, where Man Utd won the Champions League in 2008.

  75. 1656:

The teams are in the tunnel. Celtic wearing a black away kit, the Russians looking smart in old school red tracksuit tops.

  76.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon on Aiden McGeady

"He has improved since his days at Celtic. In the games I have watched Spartak play, Aiden has probably been their best attacking player.

"He looks in good condition. We all know how good he is on the ball but his movement off the ball is excellent. He covers the ground very quickly and he will be a threat.

"He will want to win the game and he will want to play well."

  77. 1652:

The home side are out for revenge. Celtic edged out Spartak for a place in the Champions League back in 2007. Both matches finished 1-1, with the Scottish side progressing after a tense penalty shoot-out in Glasgow.

Celtic captain Scott Brown played that night, as did Aiden McGeady.

  78.
BBC Scotland's Chris McLaughlin at the Luzhniki Stadium

"200 travelling #Celtic fans here in Moscow. Very mild night. #ChampionsLeague #bbcsportsound"

  79. 1649:
Former Celtic star Murdo MacLeod on BBC Radio Scotland

"Both full-backs have struggled a bit this season. Emilio Izaguirre is nowhere near the levels he was at and Mikael Lustig gets caught out defensively too often. Celtic will need to make sure they are not exposed."

  80. 1645:
Former Celtic star Murdo MacLeod on BBC Radio Scotland

"I'm slightly worried about Charlie Mulgrew in the middle of the park. He's not a natural midfielder but he has never let the side down."

  81.

Sensei in Hampshire: "Moscow will take Celtic to the cleaners tonight with a 2-0 victory after a goalless first half! Nearly had Barca the other night and are too strong for Celtic."

You can text in using 80295 or tweet with #bbcsportsound.

  82. 1641:

Fact attack! Founded in 1922 as Moscow Sports Circle, it was not until 1935 that the club settled on Spartak as a name - in honour of the Roman slave rebel Spartacus.

An early spell under the Promkooperatsiia food workers union led to them being affectionately nicknamed Myaso (The Meat).

Spartak are the only Russian club to have reached the semi-finals of all three major European competitions; the 1990/91 European Cup, the 1992/93 Cup Winners' Cup and the 1997/98 Uefa Cup, losing on all three occasions.

  83.

Anonymous: "Celtic record not the best away but so far this season its been good in Europe away from home. History doesn't matter right now its all about the 11 players on the park."

You can text in using 80295 or tweet with #bbcsportsound.

  84. 1636:

Celtic's Gary Hooper is a striker in form, with six goals in his last three games. Welliton is Spartak's main man up front but the Brazilian-born forward is currently injured.

Nigerian international Emmanuel Emenike will spearhead the home attack, while Dmitriy Kombarov is a left-back with an eye for goal.

  85. 1633:

Let's get this out of the way early. Celtic's away record in the Champions League leaves a lot to be desired: 20 games played, 19 defeats, one draw.

But Spartak's home record in the competition is nothing to shout about, with only one win in their last four group campaigns.
