Jacques Maghoma's last-minute free-kick handed Burton Albion a narrow victory over 10-man Southend.

The hosts played nearly 80 minutes with a numerical disadvantage after John Spicer was shown a straight red card for a foul on Matt Paterson.

Freddy Eastwood, Britt Assombalonga and Kevan Hurst all went close for the Shrimpers, who pushed on for the win.

Adi Yussuf twice came close to snatching the points for Albion, before Maghoma found the net from 30 yards.

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:

"Football is a cruel game. We looked a very competent side with 10 men. The players rolled their sleeves up and gave everything they had.

"It's a huge kick in the teeth at the end of the game, heads are down, they didn't deserve what they actually got in the end.

"We definitely deserved something out of the game, I'd have like to seen the game 11 v 11, because of the way we played with 10.

"We can't see how high he's [John Spicer] raised his leg, but you can't do these things in the modern game now, he should have stayed on his feet."

Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby:

"I've just said to the players, if someone gives us a DVD of that game, that is definitely one we won't be watching again.

"I wouldn't say it was a terrible match, because I think that would be a little bit unfair on Southend, because actually, with 10 men, they created more than us.

"It's always difficult when it's that early against 10 men because they get their shape and they make it hard for you. I thought Southend were absolutely terrific and in all fairness, I would have shook their hands and said 0-0 was the least they deserved really.

"Overall, you'll normally get what you deserve, but today we probably got a little bit more than we deserved. The performance was poor, but we'll take those three points gratefully."
