As it happened

  1. 1738:

Thanks for your company - and contributions - this afternoon. So sorry I couldn't hand you a winning start to Scotland's World Cup qualifying campaign. But don't blame me and please don't desert us - or Craig Levein's side. Join us again on Tuesday for the visit of Macedonia. Meanwhile, you can watch the highlights of today's game on BBC One Scotland tonight at 2305 BST.

  2. 1735:

Listen to post-match reaction: Craig Levein _.....Gary Caldwell .... Kenny Miller

  3.
    From anon by text

"Stephen from Glasgow is spot on. We are improving all the time and a draw against Serbia is far from a disaster. Levein is competing with a limited but improving squad. Belgium are not great - we can qualify"

  4.
    From Robert Fyfe on Twitter

"If Miller starts the next game, I won't be watching. That was a shocking performance even by his poor standard"

  5. 1728:

There are certainly a lot of options for Scotland coach Craig Levein ahead of the Macedonia game. Alan Hutton, Steven Naismith, Charlie Adam, James Morrison and Kenny Miller did not live up to their reputations. However, with the pressure on to get a win, it would be difficult to see Morrison or Adam being sacrificed in central midfield. Will Levein bow to Tartan Army pressure and replace Miller with Jordan Rhodes? Watch this space...

  6. 1724:

Look out for Shaun Maloney and James Forrest starting on Tuesday for the Scots against Macedonia. "Strong feeling" from BBC Scotland's Chick Young after his after-match chat with national coach Craig Levein.

  7. 1722:

The draw leaves Scotland are already playing catch-up in Group A after hotly-tipped Belgium opened with a 2-0 win in Wales and Croatia scraped a 1-0 at home to Macedonia. The latter are, of course, the visitors to Hampden on Tuesday.

  8. 1719:

One bright spot was the international debut of Huddersfield Town's Paul Dixon, who was drafted in after a series of call-offs through injury. The former Dundee United man deserved his man of the match award. Another was the form of Allan McGregor, the Besiktas goalkeeper saving Scotland on a couple of occasions to dispel fears that he had not fully recovered from injury.

  9. 1712:
    Scotland striker Kenny Miller

"I thought we played pretty well from start to finish. You can see they are a good side.

"We could have won it, we could have lost it. But things did not fall for us and maybe, at the end of the day, it might be a point gained.

"We want to win our home games, but I don't think we should beat ourselves up to much about it. It was a decent performance."

  10. 1712:
Motherwell manager Stuart McCall on BBC Radio Scotland

"It wasn't all brilliant football, but there were chances to win the game against a team that are noted for their defending. They are a decent side who were better than us when they passed the ball and created chances themselves. We are all disappointed, but there were chances. We can't get away from it, we need the three points on Tuesday night"

  11. 1706:
    Scotland coach Craig Levein

"Disappointed we didn't win, that's my over-riding feeling. We created enough chances to win.

"Unfortunately, we just didn't take them. I maybe should've (gone to the bench) a bit earlier. But you never know.

"Jamie Mackie, in particular, made a huge impact on the game. It's not what we wanted, but it's certainly not a disaster."

  12. 1705:

After all the pre-match hype, it is the same old story for the Scots. So near yet so far after a series of missed chances. Serbia were comfortable on the ball but looked like a team in transition and certainly not one that will top the group. This might be looked back upon as a chance missed similar to the defeat in the Czech Republic in the last European Championship campaign.

  13.
Former Scotland defender Willie Miller on BBC Radio Scotland

"I don't think we did enough in terms of possession and putting Serbia under pressure. In my opinion, the Serbs totally dominated the game in terms of passing. We did not do enough to win. We needed to up the tempo"

  14. 1659:
    Scotland captain Gary Caldwell

"It was always going to be a tight game. We could've won it, could've lost it. It's a start. We've got ourselves off to an okay start and one which we need to build on. We've beaten some big teams here in the past and we wanted to win the game. Our passing at times wasn't great to cut them open or put the ball in the net. We've got to pick ourselves up, there's a long way to go."

  15.
From Dave in Ediburgh by text

"Can't wait the post match excuses, sorry press conference. Levein's tactics and selections from the outset were questionable and have again been proven ropey. Two flights to Rio 2014 for sale, will accept two good strikers in exchange."

  16.
From Stephen in Glasgow by text

"Can people just get a reality check and realise that Levein is working his socks off. He has limited options. We have a good squad but can't expect miracles. "

  17.
    From Michael Dickson on Twitter

"Of course there are boos! A draw was all we could expect when Levein lines up with only one jet-lagged striker up front!#bbcsportsound"

  18.
From Brian in Slovakia by text

"Most Scots fans are unrealistic. The only team we are going to beat is Wales. Any other points are a bonus, like today."

  19.
    From David in Kabul

"Locked down in Kabul, more annoyed at whinging fans than the Taliban. Get behind the team and manager for a change."

  20. 1654:

Scotland assistant boss Peter Houston had said four points out of six from their opening two fixtures would be satisfying. They will need a victory at Macedonia to win back the Tartan Army after this average display.

  21.
    FULL-TIME- SCOTLAND 0-0 SERBIA

The full-time whistle blows and there are some boos from the home support.

  22. 1649:

James Forrest bursts into the Serbia box following a good ball from fellow sub Jamie Mackie, goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic can only parry and Branislav Ivanovic thumps it clear out of the six-yard box. Another chance missed.

  23. 1647:

Scotland have Allan McGregor to thank for staying level as the goalkeeper comes out to block after Dusan Tadic was put through behind a static defence and attempted a chip over the Besiktas man.

  24. 1647:

There isn't much at either end to suggest there is going to be a breakthrough.

  25.
From Mac in Glasgow by text

"This is absolutely shockingly dire. We are completely woeful. This is one of the worst games of football I've ever seen. Scotland are shocking - any decent team will hammer us. Can't believe it took Levein that long to make changes. If he tries to put a positive spin on this after the match, he should be sacked."

  26. 1645:

Striker Dejan Lekic has come on up front for Serbia, with Heerenveen midfielder Filip Djuricic coming off. So it looks like Serbia fancy their chances of stealing a late winner themselves.

  27.
David in Aberdeen on text 80295

"Road to Rio? Only road Levein is taking us to is the road to ruin."

  28.
Gavin in Kilbirnie on text 80295

"Miller's legs had gone at 55mins. Levein should've made the switch earlier."

  29. 1638:

Jordan Rhodes and Jamie Mackie come on for James Morrison and Kenny Miller as Scotland coach Craig Levein goes with two men up front.

  30.
Motherwell manager Stuart McCall on BBC Radio Scotland

"We just need one bit of magic, one goal will do us."

  31. 1637:

Jamie Mackie and Jordan Rhodes are both warming up apparently. The Tartan Army could be getting the changes they desire.

  32. 1636:

How's your nerves? Mine are shot and this is only the first game of the campaign. Typical feeling watching Scotland!

  33. 1634:

Things are just not happening for Kenny Miller and the veteran striker fails to connect properly with another header from 12 yards after he escapes his marker to meet a Charlie Adam free-kick.

  34.
Former Scotland defender Willie Miller on BBC Radio Scotland

"They are totally dominating the game and they have done for the last 10 minutes. The changes they made have worked well and Scotland can't get the ball"

  35.
From Quentin in Inverness by text

"At 4.25pm, this has got 0-0 written all over it. Scotland in deep trouble already. Six points from opening two home games is crucial."

  36. 1628:
BBC Scotland's Alasdair Lamont at Hampden Park

The Tartan Army are letting Craig Levein know they want to see Jordan Rhodes - NOW!

  37.
From Barry in Aberdeen by text

"This is rotten. Have to hope Rhodes comes on soon and saves us. Levein cannot survive this performance if we don't win. Not even his media mates can defend this." After one game? A tad harsh methinks, especially if it is a draw.

  38. 1626:

Celtic winger James Forrest comes on for Robert Snodgrass. Perhaps surprising since the Norwich man has performed well, but he has faded in the second half.

  39. 1623:

Another bad miss for the Scots. Gary Caldwell wins the ball in midfield and puts a fine ball through to Steven Naismith, but the Everton striker flicks it past the goalkeeper and a couple of yards wide of the far post.

  40. 1623:

That substitution has been made by the way, with Twente Enschede midfielder Dusan Tadic on for striker Danko Lazovic.

  41. 1620:

Manchester City's rampaging full-back Aleksander Kolarov gathers inside the Scots' penalty box and fires inches wide of the far post as the Serbs take advantage of some hesitant defending.

  42. 1617:

Kenny Miller misses a glorious chance after another through ball from James Morrison. Miller either mis-judged the looping ball or thought he was offside. Either way, the striker was a yard away from making contact 10 yards from goal.

  43. 1615:

The chances are coming faster now and a clever flick through from James Morrison puts Kenny Miller clear behind the Serb defence, but Vladimir Stojkovic is out swiftly to block the striker's attempted chip over the goalkeeper.

  44. 1615:

Dusan Tadic, who was a surprise omission from the Serbian starting line-up, is about to come on as a substitute.

  45. 1613:

Serbia threaten for the first time in this half, with Werder Bremen midfielder Aleksandar Ignjovski cutting inside Alan Hutton and firing a drive across the face of goal and wide of the far post.

  46.
From Mark in Glasgow by text

"Think Charlie Adam needs the hook today. Corners and free kicks have been poor and, without that, he is no better than anyone else."

  47.
    From David Williamson on Twitter

    "#bbcsportsound Naismith 3 games 0 goals. Miller 7 games 1 goal. Adam 1 game 0 goals. Snodgrass 3 games 1 goal. Fletcher 1 game 2 goals."

  48.
From Alan in Eyemouth by text

"Poor game and, although Scotland doing ok, we need to win this game. Miller drifting away from the box too often & when we attack its our three against their seven. Although Caldwell done nothing wrong, we just don't need him as Adam is coming back time after time to collect the ball from defence. Get another striker on and give it a go Scotland. "

  49. 1610:

Christophe Berra - almost forgot the Wolves defender was playing - sends a header across the face of goal and Kenny Miller can't react quick enough at the back post following a dangerous Scotland corner.

  50. 1608:

Back to that half-time change, Milos Mijailovic, the 18-year-old Red Star Belgrade holding midfielder, was replaced with Ljubomir Fejsa of Olympiacos.

  51. 1606:
    YELLOW CARD

Robert Snodgrass is penalised for a mid-air push on Aleksander Kolarov.

  52. 1603:

The second half kicks-off and the Serbs have made a change at the break. More on that in a minute.

  53. 1602:

It has been a fairly even first half, perhaps not surprising considering how close the two sides are in the world rankings. Allan McGregor has had only two saves to make and his opposite number just one. The Scots need to see more from the creative talents of James Morrison and Charlie Adam in central midfield to exploit a Serbia defence that has looked a bit suspect.

  54. 1555:

Suggestions at half time that Scotland forward Steven Naismith was a bit lucky to escape being penalised for a flying elbow during the first half. Will be interesting to see BBC Scotland's highlights programme later tonight.

  55.
    From Rich Olyott on Twitter

"Hutton two-footed challenge walks away, Collins gets red? #scotfree#bbcsportsound @BBCFootball1" Technically true, but the Welsh man's challenge against Belgium did look a bit more violent.

  56.
    From Michael Dickson on Twitter

"Lucky Escape! Some more Trigger Happy refs would have shown Hutton Red for that!#bbcsportsound #GreatEscape" Alan Hutton escaped somewhat after a two-footed challenge on Milos Ninkovic.

  57. 1548:
    HALF-TIME- Scotland 0-0 Serbia

Half-time and we are still to see a goal at Hampden.

  58. 1547:

Matija Nastasic is living dangerously with another tackle that teases Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson to reach for a second yellow card.

  59. 1544:

Danko Lazovic almost catches out Allan McGregor with a low curling drive through a forest of legs from the edge of the box, but the Scotland goalkeeper backtracks and clutches the striker's effort to his chest.

  60. 1542:

Right on cue, Charlie Adam pounces on a defensive error and plays a clever first-time pass through to Kenny Miller, but the Vancouver Whitecaps striker's attempted chip over the Serbian goalkeeper from 16 yards loops over the crossbar.

  61. 1542:
BBC Scotland's Alasdair Lamont at Hampden Park

After a really lively start to the game, it's all gone rather flat at Hampden, both on the park and off it. The team need to rouse the fans and vice versa. I thought we were in for a goal-fest at first, but now it's difficult to see where any will come from.

  62. 1539:

By the way, just in case you are wondering, that glorious sunshine only lasted a matter of minutes at Hampden. It has been overcast since and we are needing something a bit brighter from the Scots to open up the Serbs.

  63.
    From Alan by text

"Stevie May scored almost a goal a game for Alloa last season... Surely that makes him better qualified for a place in the squad than some of this lot..." That might be stretching it just a tad...

  64.
    From Luigi Edinburgh by text

"Levein has disproved the theory that anyone can look cool wearing sunglasses." Well, the Blues Brothers were rather uncool too! Their music certainly was anything but.

  65. 1534:

The Serbs have weathered a bit of a mini Scottish storm and are taking control of midfield, slowing the passing down and dominating possession.

  66. 1530:
    YELLOW CARD

Talking of Matija Nastasic, the Manchester City defender is shown the first yellow card of the match after tripping a marauding Alan Hutton.

  67. 1528:

Serbia are a team building for the future, with five players of 21 or under in their starting line-up, including Manchester City's 19-year-old summer signing from Fiorentina, Matija Nastasic, in a defence that is looking anything but comfortable.

  68. 1524:

Danko Lazovic is put through on the Scotland goal but is pulled up by an offside flat. The Zenit St Petersburg striker lashed the effort wide, so he is probably pleased it wouldn't have counted anyway.

  69. 1523:

Steven Naismith is agonisingly close to reaching a Robert Snodgrass cross into the penalty box as the Scots begin to apply more pressure.

  70. 1523:

Robert Snodgrass forces Vladimir Stojkovic into a save after the Norwich man jinks into the box and sends a drive from point blank range off the chest of the goalkeeper and wide.

  71.
Former Scotland defender Willie Miller on BBC Radio Scotland

"It's just not happening for us, the passing's a bit wayward."

  72.
    From Colin by text

"Just come in from work and I've seen the Scotland team, I was expecting Rhodes and Naismith up front, but Kenny Miller? What is it with Craig Levein - can't he see past this over-rated player? I would rather play Jim Traynor up front than him!" You can suggest that to Jim on Your Call tonight.

  73. 1518:

Here's something to warm your cockles. BBC Radio Scotland commentator John Barnes is reminding us that Serbia are on a run one win in 10 matches.

  74.
    From Samantha Walsh on Twitter

"Come on Scotland! You are being awarded a precious break in my thesis writing, so don't let me down! #bbcsportsound" Gold star from me to you Samantha!

  75.
    From Gary Clarke on Twitter

"#bbcsportsound Please let's get tae Rio, Scotland. Have it on good authority that Mogwai will record the official World Cup song #notreally"

  76. 1515:

Craig Levein is out on the touchline re-organising in response to Serbia leaving three players up front, a tactic that is leaving the Scots defence in a bit of disarray. But, at the same time, it is leaving the visitors a bit short and exposed at the other end.

  77. 1513:

Paul Dixon is rising to the challenge of international football with another dangerous cross that is blasted wide for another Scotland corner.

  78. 1512:

A Paul Dixon cross causes some panic in the Serbia penalty box following a deflection and Aleksander Kolarov has to chest the ball wide for a corner, beating James Morrison to the ball.

  79. 1510:
Former Scotland defender Willie Miller on BBC Radio Scotland

"The Serbs are playing with three up, so they're making it difficult for us."

  80. 1509:

Serbia are being adventurous and looking to catch the Scots on the break by leaving three players up front even when they concede corners and free-kicks around the box.

  81. 1507:

Another let-off for Scotland as goalkeeper Allan McGregor claws the ball away at his near post after Aleksander Kolarov curls the free-kick round the wall.

  82. 1506:

Let off for the Scots as Christophe Berra is penalised for a bit of jersey pulling. A free-kick is given when it looked yards inside the box.

  83. 1506:

Scotland are into the Serbia box for the first time and Steven Naismith wins a corner that is held by goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic, who lets it slip from his grasp before holding at the second attempt. A bit of nervousness there.

  84. 1505:

Robert Snodgrass is giving Alan Hutton a few choice words there. Maybe the Norwich man has been told by his former boss Paul Lambert why Hutton has been banished from the first-team squad at Aston Villa!

  85.
From Norman in Edinburgh by text

"Clive, we need to win all our home games and get a couple of good results away. Don't see why we only play one up front, especially when at home, but I suppose it's better than the game almost two years ago when we played with none." Let's not revisit the old 4-6-0 formation against the Czechs that I think even Craig Levein regrets.

  86. 1502:

Glorious sunshine at Hampden as Serbia dominate early possession.

  87. 1500:
    KICK-OFF

    We're off....on our way to Brazil....hopefully...

  88. 1500:

Serbia clapped the Scottish national anthem and then are doing a bit of a Celtic huddle that is holding up kick-off

  89. 1458:

Where was Amy Macdonald this time for the sing-along-a-Corries?

  90. 1457:

Craig Levein is singing along to Flower of Scotland looking like a member of the Blues Brothers in his dark glasses.

  91.
    From anon. by text

"What's happened to James McArthur, great form for Wigan this season, never put a foot wrong for Scotland and the ideal replacement for Scott Brown?" The former Hamilton Accies man is injured I believe.

  92. 1454:

The teams are out to a typical Hampden roar and the anthems are about to start.

  93.
    From Jimmy Ward on Twitter

"Re: Keith Bowie - McCormack should be starting, has done more consistently at a higher level than Rhodes #bbcsportsound#bbcsport"

  94. 1451:

The atmosphere at Hampden is building. Looking like it will be close full to capacity and the stands are beginning to bounce to the sing along inspired by The Proclaimers. Shame it is not a sell-out though!

  95.
From Andy in Edinburgh by text

"Clive, a draw at home would be pretty bad. We need to win these two big games. I'm confident we will!!! Come on Scotland let's hear the roar!"

  96.
    GET INVOLVED

Scotland haven't got a record of starting qualifying campaigns with a win. Can they change that today?

  97.
    From Keith Bowie on Twitter

"#bbcsportsound Rhodes should have started. Miller not good enough any more." Well, let's hope that sunshine in Vancouver has refreshed him enough to help him mark his latest cap with a goal or two.

  98.
From Andy in Edinburgh by text

"If we can't beat Serbia today, there's no way we will qualify. This game will tell us if we can compete now." Maybe a bit harsh to rule us out so early. A draw would not be fatal. Defeat, though, would be difficult to recover from. But, come on lads, let's be more positive, please!

  99.
    From Big Humphrey in Paisley

"Steven Naismith was subbed at half -time last weekend by Everton. No injury. Looked a bit off it to be honest." Let's hope he was just saving himself!

  100. 1437:
    Scotland starting line-up and subs

McGregor, Hutton, Webster, Berra, Dixon, Caldwell, Naismith, Snodgrass, Adam, Morrison, Miller. Subs: Gilks, Hanley, Rhodes, Mackie, Maloney, Forrest, Cowie, Dorrans, McCormack, Phillips, Foster, Marshall.

  103.
    Serbia starting line-up (correct!)

Stojkovic, Ivanovic, Bisevac, Nastasic, Kolarov, Mijailovic, Tosic, Ninkovic, Ignjovski, Djuricic, Lazovic. Subs: Kahriman, Tomovic, Maksimovic, Petrovic, Lekic, Tadic, Lukovic, Matic, Fejsa, Subotic, Markovic, Brkic.

"Re 1415, Clive you've only named 10 of the 11 players starting for Serbia. I hope we are playing against 10 men!" Well spotted that man. Yes, a bit too optimistic there. Full line-up coming shortly...

  105. 1431:

Allan McGregor had raised doubts about his own fitness ahead of the game. Craig Levein insisted that the goalkeeper was fully fit after making a faster than expected recovery from the injury he picked up against Australia and forced him to miss Besiktas' opening two league fixtures in Turkey. The Scots will hope the former Rangers man is not forced off early this time.

  106.

  107.
From Jack an England fan by text

"There is no way Scotland will qualify. Too weak defensively and never look to 'go for it'."

  108. 1423:

Sunderland's Phil Bardsley, Norwich City's Steven Whittaker and Rangers' Lee Wallace were all ruled out of the original squad through injury. Norwich's Russell Martin, Celtic's Charlie Mulgrew and Southampton's Danny Fox were all subsequently ruled out. So Huddersfield Town's Paul Dixon it is at left-back, with Ricky Foster his back-up man despite having been displaced in the Bristol City starting line-up by their recent signing from Celtic, Mark Wilson.

  109. 1422:

A Scottish snapper managed to take a photograph of a diagram discarded on the touchline as Serbia trained at Hampden last night, suggesting that coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has targeted the left-hand side of the Scottish defence for special attention. That is hardly a surprise considering the Scots have been hit with a series of injury call-offs in defence in the lead-up to today's game, but Scotland coach Craig Levein is talking postively about Paul Dixon's debut at left-back.

  110. 1420:
Scotland coach Craig Levein talking to BBC Radio Scotland's Chick Young

"I'm just really looking forward to getting started. I've enjoyed this week. The lads have trained extremely well and I detect a real determination within the group.

"There's every reason to think that getting off to a start with two home games is the right way of doing it but, I don't know. We'll find out won't we.

"What I've done is put the players in their best positions. I don't think in any of my time as a manager, I've had such a strong bench.

"Paul Dixon's great on the ball, his natural instinct is to attack. We've got to try and take the game to the Serbs. I feel Paul can do that."

  111. 1420:

Taking the Scotland armband today will be Gary Caldwell and it is a significant day for the Wigan Athletic defender. He will pick up his 50th cap and is being lined up as the lynchpin in midfield in the absence of the likes of his previously mentioned predecessor, Darren Fletcher. Caldwell admitted yesterday that the holding midfield role is not his favourite as he sees himself as an out-and-out centre-half, but he performed the role fairly well in last month's friendly win over Australia.

  112. 1419:

Serbia coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, of course, teased the Scots in his pre-match media conference. When asked who was Scotland's biggest dangerman, he laughingly replied: "Fletcher." He was talking about Sunderland's Steven, but he could well have been talking collectively too, with Manchester United midfielder Darren also missing because of his long-term illness. The good news in the long-term is that the former Scotland captain has been named by Sir Alex Ferguson in his 25-man Champions League squad, which could signal the 28-year-old's imminent return.

  113. 1419:

One of the big talking points has again been the continued absence of Steven Fletcher from the squad. The ongoing rift with Craig Levein returned to sharp focus after the striker's £12m switch from Wolves to Sunderland and his scoring double in his debut. Can Kenny Miller, Jordan Rhodes, or someone else with his shooting boots on ensure we are not talking about the former Hibernian man after today's final whistle?

  114. 1418:

The Scots are back to the ranking they started with when Craig Levein took over as national coach two years ago. But he made it clear in the lead up to this match that he has a "miles better" squad from which to pick and that he himself is "a much better international manager". What do you think?

  115. 1418:

Serbia are 42nd in the world, a drop of seven after last night's results, five ahead of the Scots, who have dropped only one. So the side's should be fairly well matched.

  116. 1417:

The concensus is that no side will run away with Group A and that teams will take points off each other right, left and centre. Scotland assistant Peter Houston thinks four points from the opening two fixtures would be satisfactory. But Belgium's away victory could be particularly crucial even this early and surely puts more onus for the Scots to win their opening two games, both at home today and on Tuesday against Macedonia.

  117. 1417:
    Alasdair Lamont at Hampden Park

Manchester City's new signing - the young centre-back Matija Nastasic - starts alongside Milan Bisevac, with Borussia Dortmund's highly thought-of Neven Subotic only on the bench. Chelsea's Ivanovic and City's Kolarov play at full-back. Of the rest of the outfield players, only Tosic and Ninkovic are in double figures in terms of caps. Can Scotland capitalise on that inexperience?

If you caught either of last night's Group A games on TV, give us your thoughts, especially on how you think the Scots will fare against them.

Serbia: Stojkovic, Ivanovic, Bisevac, Kolarov, Mijailovic, Ignjovski, Ninkovic, Duricic, Tosic, Lazovic.

  120. 1414:

I didn't see the match in Cardiff myself, but some suggested that Chris Coleman's Welsh didn't look too bad themselves despite having to play much of the match against Belgium with 10 men after defender James Collins was sent off after 26 minutes. Certainly they must be the best lowest seeds in any of the groups.

  122. 1413:

While you are digesting the team news, one media outlet has calculated that the current Belgian starting XI are frighteningly worth nearly £200m, making them many people's Group A favourites despite intially being third seeds. They are the first to admit that they didn't live up to their big-money billing in Wales. But, despite that, they left Cardiff with a 2-0 win thanks to a 42nd-minute Vincent Kompany header and Jan Vertonghen's ferocious free-kick seven minutes from time.

A surprise in the Serbia line-up with Twente Eschede forward Dusan Tadic being left out along with Genclerbirligi striker Dejan Lekic.

The Scotland line-up is as most people had anticipated, with Paul Dixon making his international debut at left-back. Gary Caldwell will play in the holding midfield role, with Snodgrass, Morrison, Adam and Naismith in front of him, in support of the lone striker Kenny Miller.

  125. 1406:

The Scotland line-up is as predicted: Allan McGregor (Besiktas), Alan Hutton (Aston Villa), Andy Webster (Hearts), Christophe Berra (Wolves), Paul Dixon (Huddersfield), Gary Caldwell (Wigan), Robert Snodgrass (Norwich), James Morrison (West Brom), Charlie Adam (Stoke), Steven Naismith (Everton), Kenny Miller (Vancouver) in a 4-1-4-1 formation, despite many calls for the Scots to "go for it" with two up front.

  126. 1405:

Croatia, the top seeds in Group A, struggled against Macedonia before one Nikica Jelavic - remember him? - gave their old Yugoslav comrades a 69th-minute kick in the Balkans. Macedonia's Vance Sikov had an effort cleared off the line, while Goran Pandev sent a drive against the crossbar, before Igor Stimac, who has taken over from Slaven Bilic as Croatia coach, changed the course of the match by bringing on Everton's former Rangers striker in place of Eduardo after the break.

  127. 1404:

Group A opponents Croatia and Belgium have already got off to a flying start after the new switch of most international fixtures to Fridays instead of Saturdays.

  128. 1403:

The Scots haven't qualified for a major finals since the 1998 World Cup in France and the draw hasn't made it easy for Craig Levein's side to break that run.

What do you expect from this afternoon's game? What would be a good result for Scotland? Who would be in your starting line-up if you were in Craig Levein's place? Or, if you are Serbian, coach instead of Sinisa Mihajlovic?

  130. 1358:

The road to Rio starts here. At least that's what the vast majority of the 50,000-odd who will troop to Hampden Park today - and many more glued to their TVs and radios - will be hoping as Craig Levein's Scots begin their World Cup qualifying campaign at home to Serbia.
