Striker Adam Cunnington opened the scoring by converting a penalty, awarded when he was brought down by Gateshead's Ben Clark.

Tamworth stretched their lead when Tom Marshall headed in a Peter Till cross.

Gateshead's chances of a comeback were stopped in their tracks when substitute James Marwood was dismissed for a professional foul on Richard Tait.
