Right, it's time for me to call it a day. Thanks for keeping me company over the last few hours and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I'm back on Friday night for the small matter of some World Cup qualifiers... the road to Brazil 2014 starts there for the home nations, so make sure you join me. Cheerio for now.
-
Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar on Twitter: "Very happy with this point, but more satisfied with the team performance! Great spirit, great fans."
-
1853:
Now then, judging from what I can see on Twitter, a lot of people are calling Manchester United a one-man team after their dramatic win over Southampton. Which man is that, though? Sir Alex Ferguson might have different ideas to some of you...
"When Paul Scholes came on the pitch, it changed the game completely," Ferguson said.
"In the first half we were more or less in control and we thought second half "let's get down to business and get the game done".
"Credit to Southampton for getting ahead with another goal from a diagonal cross, but Scholes' consistency of passing gave us complete control and Robin Van Persie gave us two important goals."
-
Mike on Twitter: "Re 1840. It doesn't matter if Ferguson doesn't like it, he knew what he was buying."
-
1849:
I know you won't dare miss it but just a reminder that you can see all of today's Premier League action on MOTD2 at 22:25 BST on BBC One and this website (in the UK). As well as the late drama at St Mary's, I promise you Hatem Ben Arfa's peach of a strike for Newcastle is well-worth watching on its own.
-
Robbie Savage, BBC Radio 5 live"Good point for Villa, three great points for Arsenal and Man Utd! Liverpool need a striker and Southampton have been a breath of fresh air!"
-
Joe Lawton on Twitter: "Mike Dean with the best refereeing performance of the season at St Mary's today. Penalty spot on and played lots of advantages."
-
Dan, via text: "Re 1759. Chris, to say it's undeserved on Southampton to be bottom is wrong. Yes, they've played fairly well so far but having played three and lost three they are bottom, deservedly, on merit."
Let's agree to disagree on that one Dan...
-
1840:
Yes, Andreas Weimann is right - it is two weeks before the Premier League resumes. And I can't imagine Sir Alex Ferguson will be too happy to see Dutch striker Robin van Persie depart to play Turkey and Hungary, especially with his history of picking up injuries while on international duty.
-
Villa striker Andreas Weimann on Twitter: "Great point away at Newcastle...international break now and then let's get up that table."
-
1839:
Anyone want some more stats to reflect today's events? I thought so... Here are Infostrada Sport to supply us with some...
In his 1000th league match as Manchester United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson won his 599th match.
Robin van Persie not only scored his 100th PL goal, he netted his fourth PL hat-trick.
And Aston Villa have now gone 13 PL matches without a win, a new outright top-flight league record for the club.
-
1833:
Here's more from Sir Alex Ferguson, this time on his side's struggles at the back so far this term.
"Our best form came when Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand played regularly last season," the Manchester United boss explained. "We had four centre-backs out injured for our first game this season and Michael Carrick had to play centre-half.
"Rio was back today and in the second half he did better and ended up playing very well for us.
"If we can keep the centre-backs fit, it will give us a really good chance."
-
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez on Twitter: "Keep on working... The results will arrive!"
-
1828:
Hmmm, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is clearly a bit frustrated - to say the least - by his side's display in their draw with Aston Villa.
"I can't say that we deserved to win and you could argue that Villa did," Pardew explained. "We were a bit funny today, we lacked discipline and our set-plays were awful.
"It was a nightmare from a coaching point of view. We were better in the second half but they still had chances. Both managers probably walk away and think a point is fair but we won't come across many teams that will work as hard as Villa did."
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
FULL-TIME Rangers 5-1 Elgin City: Rangers move third in the Scottish Third Division after a comfortable win against Elgin City with David Templeton and Lee McCulloch each scoring twice.
-
1824:
You have to feel for Southampton boss Nigel Adkins, who rightly talks about a fine performance from his team against Manchester United in his post-match interview, but knows his team are bottom of the Premier League with three defeats from three games."
"It's not a nice feeling," Adkins said. "We are used to winning as a football club. We scored two good goals, put a lot of effort into it but not seen it out. Still, we have to take positives from our performance - we are scoring goals and what we have to do is stop conceding them at the other end."
-
FULL-TIME- Southampton 2-3 Man Utd
BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan at St Mary's: "Southampton are quickly finding out what a brutal place the Premier League is. Nigel Adkins side are still searching for their point of the season, but if they keep playing like this then they'll soon have their day. For United it was nervy but Robin van Persie is already proving to be one of Sir Alex Ferguson's best acquisitions in his 26 years at Old Trafford. It is in midfield, though, that United continue to struggle."
-
FULL-TIME- Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa
MOTD's Alistair Mann at Sports Direct Arena: "Newcastle manager Alan Pardew likened Hatem Ben Arfa to the impressive Eden Hazard after last week's defeat by Chelsea, and the Frenchman showed just why with an early goal-of-the-season contender to peg back Aston Villa. A draw was fair in the end, and Villa boss Paul Lambert will be encouraged to earn a first point of the season."
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at AnfieldFULL-TIME- Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal"Liverpool's fans gave their verdict on this abject display by leaving Anfield in droves well before the final whistle. Arsenal's supporters, in sharp contrast, celebrated a performance that offered real optimism for a team still bedding down. Tough start this for Brendan Rodgers."
-
1817:
Lots to take in from today, so lets start with a recap of the three top-flight games. We will begin at Anfield...
-
1816:
Lest we forget, Aston Villa picked up a very impressive point today, their first of the season. Paul Lambert thinks they deserved it too.
"I thought we were excellent throughout, offensively and defensively," the Villa boss said following their 1-1 draw at Newcastle. "Some of the football we played was very good. We've got a young side and every one of them was very good. We'd rather try to play football than not and if we keep working as hard as that we'll do well. We're getting stronger."
-
1814:
Here's the man of the moment - Robin van Persie/Perfect/President, or whatever you want to call him. He apologises for his missed penalty, but then he sort of did that already with his match-winning hat-trick, didn't he?
"I don't know what I was thinking with the penalty. I was going to hit it hard but at the last second I changed my mind," Van Persie said. "I'm quite disappointed about it. I ask a certain standards from my game and at 2-1 down you cannot take a penalty like that.
"We were a bit lucky with the 2-2 and the dramatic end. I have to say a big thank you to Paul Scholes. When he came on, every single pass he hit was the right one. With him you are always on your toes. For me, he was the man of the match."
-
1810:
So, newly-promoted Southampton have now played both Manchester clubs - last season's top two - and led 2-1 each time but ended up losing. I bet Nigel Adkins doesn't know whether to laugh or cry.
-
1808:
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on his hat-trick hero Robin van Persie's missed penalty: "I was surprised because every time I've seen him take a penalty he usually rattles it into the corners, so I was confident. But he made up for it."
-
Max in Towcester via text: "Southampton remind me of Blackpool good plucky underdogs who collapsed in the backend of the game."
-
1803:
A couple of stats for you from OptaJoe for you to digest while you get your breath back after that little lot.
85 - Man Utd won a PL game they were losing with five minutes remaining for the first time since April 1993 (vs Sheff Wed). Drama
8 - Robin van Persie has reached 100 PL goals in 197 games, the eighth-quickest rate in the competition's history. Deadly.
-
Kwong Tse on Twitter: "Man U play the get of jail card again. Did they deserve it? No. Poor Southampton they were excellent for 85 minutes at least."
Rob Satchell on Twitter: "ROBIN VAN PERSIE!!!!! Beast!! Saints played quality to be fair though #alloverus definitely safe this season."
Andrew Wilson on Twitter: "Vanchester United ... take him away and it's a pretty ordinary team. I don't rate them."
-
1759:
That draw takes Aston Villa off the bottom of the fledgling Premier League table, to be replaced by... Southampton. Nigel Adkins' side are now the only top-flight team without a point, but never has last place been less deserved.
-
1758:FULL-TIME- Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa
-
Adam on Twitter: "Van Persie must feel like nothing has changed. Saving his team from embarrassing defeats against weaker sides."
Oliver Render on Twitter: "That's what 24 million gets you, 2 more points that could win them the title."
Marvic Cordina on Twitter: "Van Persie from hero to zero and back to hero."
-
1755:GREAT SAVE!
More drama? Yes. Newcastle have a free-kick on the edge of the Villa box... and it almost supplies us with another late winner.
Yohan Cabaye is behind it, and curls the ball goalwards but Brad Guzan is across to claw it to safety. A great stop - and it might be a while before Shay Given gets his place back on this evidence.
-
1754:
What a game that was. Southampton probably don't know how they lost it, but it was down to one man - Robin van Persie. He missed a penalty but he still takes home the matchball.
-
1754:FULL-TIME- Southampton 2-3 Man Utd

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
GOAL Rangers 5-1 Elgin City: Lee McCulloch nets his second of the day for Rangers and both he and David Templeton are now chasing a hat-trick.
-
Ellis Hatch on Twitter: "Penalty, what penalty?"
Rory on Twitter: "Robin van Perfect"
Mark Fletcher on Twitter: "Robin Van Persie. He does indeed score when he wants."
-
1753:
There will be five minutes of injury time at Sports Direct Arena... surely time for a winner there too, then?
-
1750:GOAL- Southampton 2-3 Man Utd - Robin van Persie hat-trick (92 mins)
There is you know. Nani's corner is met at the near post by Robin van Persie, who arches his neck to power home a brilliant header past a flailing Kelvin Davis. It's harsh on Southampton, but Van Persie has his hat-trick and a century of top-flight goals... and it appears United have the three points too.
-
1749:
There will be four minutes of added time at St Mary's. That second Robin van Persie goal was his 99th in the Premier League - is there time for his 100th today too?
-
Damihce726 on Twitter: "RVP. The poacher poaches again."
Shayek SRAhmed on Twitter: "Phewwwww!!! RVP, a winner now would be brilliant!"
-
1748:
If they do want to win it, United have got some defending to do first. Nemanja Vidic gets the merest of touches on a corner to stop Jos Hooiveld getting on the end of it and restoring Southampton's lead.
-
1746:GOAL- Southampton 2-2 Man Utd - Robin van Persie (87 mins)
Rafael's cross is met by Rio Ferdinand, who sees his header come back off the post... but straight into the path of Robin van Persie, who slams the ball home from point-blank range.
Relief for Sir Alex Ferguson & co, and you know they will go on and try to win this game now.
-
1743:
There are only five minutes of the 90 left for Manchester United to find an equaliser. Southampton are now defending deep and in numbers, but they still look dangerous on the break. Whatever happens, we are in for an exciting finish now.
-
Vincent O'Rourke on Twitter: "Love the fact Southampton are carrying on the example set by Swansea and Norwich. Promoted teams playing fluid football."
Harrison Akoh on Twitter: "Southampton are just fluid..."
-
1741:
A rare chance for Aston Villa to retake the lead. The ball falls for nicely for Stephen Ireland on the edge of the Newcastle box but he snatches at his shot and ends up blasting it a long way off target.
-
1739:
Manchester United need some inspiration from somewhere, but they only succeed in turning attack into defence. Rafael meets a corner on the edge of the box but is bustled off the ball and ends up dragging back Steven Davis to prevent a counter-attack - he is lucky to escape a yellow card there.
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
GOAL Rangers 4-1 Elgin City: It's another for Rangers and another for David Templeton, who spun deftly in the six-yard box to volley past John Gibson.
-
Edward in Devon via text: "Once again Man United's midfield failing to impose themselves away from home. Their away form will cost them this season."
-
1737:SUBSTITUTION- Jay Rodriguez for Adam Lallana (Southampton)
Saints make another switch to complete their refresh of their front three. They still lead 2-1, with 10 minutes left, but they have not brought on any extra defenders.
-
1735:SUBSTITUTION- Charles N'Zogbia for Karim El Ahmadi (Aston Villa)
Karim El Ahmadi is injured so Charles N'Zogbia (or Charles Insomnia as he was known to former Magpies boss Joe Kinnear during his time at Newcastle) is on to face his former club.

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
Rangers 3-1 Elgin City: Rangers are about to start the second half 3-1 up, with Lee McCulloch having scored just before half-time.
-
Stuart McKeown on Twitter: "RVP - Really Vile Penalty."
-
1734:SUBSTITUTION- Guly Do Prado for Rickie Lambert (Southampton)
Another change up front for the Saints - like Jason Puncheon, Rickie Lambert has put in one heck of a shift today.
-
1733:SUBSTITUTION- Emmanuel Mayuka for Jason Puncheon (Southampton)
Jason Puncheon has been superb today, running United's defence ragged at times. His afternoon is over now, though, because Zambian striker Emmanuel Mayuka is on for his Premier League debut.
-
Sam via text: "Van Persie might need some tips off Andre Pirlo for taking a cool penalty."
-
Dan Nugent on Twitter: "RVP does not score when he wants."
Jeffrey G on Twitter: "1st real low of RVP's United carrier."
Craig Boyle on Twitter: "Hasn't taken Van Persie long to discover what this "hairdryer" thing is all about at Old Trafford!"
-
1730:
Things are pretty quiet in comparison at Sports Direct Arena. We have had a delay while Villa's ex-Sunderland striker Darren Bent received treatment after getting a ball slammed into his face - the Newcastle fans seemed to enjoy that one.
-
Tom Carr on Twitter: "Goal of the month? Arise Hatem Ben Arfa."
-
1727:MISSED PENALTY- Kelvin Davis saves from Robin van Persie
Where do we start? Kelvin Davis rolls the ball straight to Nani and Saints shoot themselves in the foot again seconds later when Jos Hooiveld clatters into Robin van Persie with a wild challenge, going straight through the Dutchman to get the ball.
That's a penalty, and Van Persie takes it himself... and makes a right mess of it. He tries to be cute, too cute, clipping it into the corner... but Davis redeems himself by scrambling across to claw it round the post.
-
1727:PENALTY- to Manchester United
-
1726:
Again, United's defence is torn to shreds. Rickie Lambert springs the offside trap and it takes a last-ditch challenge from Nemanja Vidic to stop his low cross reaching James Ward-Prowse.
-
1725:
"Lambert for England" is the chant from the St Mary's stands. Why not? If Jay Bothroyd is an England striker, so is Rickie Lambert.
-
Jake, Wolverhampton, via text: "Re Gareth Soye. No case for the defence?? Vidic recovering from a long term injury, Evra one of the best left backs in the world and Rafael is young and learning. Will soon be the best defence in the league."
-
1724:
Manchester United's defence is looking very vulnerable right now - they need a linesman's flag to (wrongly) rescue them as Rickie Lambert looks to chase another through-ball. Sir Alex Ferguson's men have got 25 minutes to salvage something from this game and avoid a second-successive away defeat.
-
BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan at St Mary's: "St Mary's is rocking as Southampton go back in front. Nigel Adkins has got his tactics spot on here and Sir Alex Ferguson desperately needed to change things with that double switch. United look desperately out of sorts."
-
Tom Lane on Twitter: "Vidic and Ferdinand look shadows of their former selves - Lambert is tearing Vidic apart and Ferdinand looks past it."
Ryan McAleer on Twitter: "Lambert for England? People need to calm down. We had this nonsense with Grant Holt last season."
Graham Drury on Twitter: "Someone call the cops because United are being murdered!"
-
1720:GOAL- Newcastle 1-1 Aston Villa - Hatem Ben Arfa (59 mins)
Only one word needed to describe this one: WOW! Hatem Ben Arfa picks up the ball near the left-hand corner of the Villa box, takes a touch, looks up and arrows an unstoppable shot into the top corner. Straight out of the top drawer, that one.
-
1720:SUBSTITUTION- Nani for Shinji Kagawa (Man Utd)
-
1720:SUBSTITUTION- Paul Scholes for Tom Cleverley (Man Utd)
-
1719:
Looks like Manchester United are about to make a double substitution, with 30 minutes left. They need to try something different, because Southampton are looking very dangerous right now - Jason Puncheon has just smashed another shot over the bar.
-
1718:
Lots going on in the north east too, as Newcastle spurn a great chance to level.
Hatem Ben Arfa is left unmarked in the Aston Villa box 10 yards out but he heads straight at Brad Guzan. If that chance had fallen to Papiss Cisse or Demba Ba, you suspect there might have been a different outcome.
-
1717:
Almost a third for Southampton, as Patrice Evra's nightmare continues. Jason Puncheon turns Evra inside out and makes space for a stinging low shot that Anders Lindegaard does well to turn round his near post.
-
Ainsley Murray on Twitter: "Hope RVP doesn't have to be subbed due to a bad back! Must be hard carrying another team again this year..."
Gareth Soye on Twitter: "Rio past it. Vidic losing it. Evra never really had it. And Rafael doesn't know what it is. No case for the defence."
-
Graham Taylor, BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's"Without the slip by Evra, I'm not saying he wouldn't have scored, but it allowed him to score more comfortably."
-
1714:GOAL- Southampton 2-1 Man Utd - Morgan Schneiderlin (56 mins)
Hello. Where did this come from? Southampton score with their first real attack of the second half, when Patrice Evra slips as he tries to deal with a dinked Rickie Lambert cross, allowing Morgan Schneiderlin to run in and plant his header into the bottom corner. The Saints are back in front.
-
1713:
A real let-off for Southampton here. Kelvin Davis gives the ball straight to Antonio Valencia and, when he rolls the ball across the edge of the area for Robin van Persie to let fly, Saints fans probably fear the worse. Instead, Van Persie miscues and slices his shot wide.
-
1711:
Meanwhile, Aston Villa have come out all guns blazing at the start of the second half. No chances to speak of, but they are dominating possession and territory too.
-
Jim Davies on Twitter: "Who will Roy Hodgson call up to replace Andy Carroll? Is there a better target man than Rickie Lambert? Great in the air AND on the deck!"
-
1708:
So far, Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie have not linked up in the same electric fashion they did against Fulham last weekend, but the Manchester United duo do combine well here.
Van Persie slides Kagawa into space on the edge of the Southampton box and his fierce shot ends up only a couple of yards wide of goal. Kelvin Davis dived to try and reach it but he was grateful to see it fly wide.
-

Brendan Maloney on Twitter: "Has Pardew forgotten how fluid Newcastle looked up top playing 4-3-3 last season? This is awful."
Tim Whatmough on Twitter: "NUFC paying for a poor pre-season where we failed to get our big players up to match fitness. Poor organisation."
Chris Humphrey on Twitter: "NUFC not got going because we've stopped using the 4-3-3 that pushed Ba out on the left... I suspect we'll revert eventually."
-
Steve, City fan, Nottingham, via text: "I sense that Fergie hair dryer may be blowing again in the United dressing room!"
-
1657:
The road to the 2014 World Cup starts for most European countries on Friday so it is apt that the name of the ball they will use in the finals in Brazil has just been announced - the Brazuca.
For me that just conjures up connotations of some very dangerous-sounding underwear but, as long as it bounces, and doesn't change direction in mid-air like that blasted Jabulani did at South Africa 2010, I don't really care what they call it.
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
FULL-TIME Hearts 0-1 Dundee: Dundee lift themselves off the bottom of the SPL table courtesy of Ryan Conroy's second-minute penalty. Hearts missed a spot-kick of their own when John Sutton's effort was saved by 40-year-old Rab Douglas.
-
LudaChris on Twitter: "So much deadwood at Man Utd. Ferdinand is way off the pace as usual and Welbeck has given the ball away everytime he's touched it."
Shohidur Rahman on Twitter: "United have been so poor in the first half. Very lucky to go in 1-1. Kagawa and Welbeck have been awful."
Ben Carter on Twitter: "When Southampton were in League 1, I always said Rickie Lambert would score goals in any division."
-
1656:
It's only half-time but, as things stand, Aston Villa and Southampton are in line for their first points of the season.
Ciaran Clark's goal means Villa have leapt up eight places from 20th to 12th while, for Saints, holding Manchester United means they hop up just the one place from 19th to 18th.
-
Jonathan Pearce, BBC SportAt St Mary's for MOTD: "Sir Alex Ferguson probably cannot wait to get Manchester United into the changing room at half-time, but Nigel Adkins will be delighted with Southampton. United have been below their best, but Southampton have been very good in the first half."
-
HALF-TIME- Southampton 1-1 Man Utd
BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan at St Mary's: "Absolute belter of a first half at St Mary's. Rickie Lambert is giving the United defence a torrid time, while Robin van Persie is a constant menace up front for the hosts. This is already reminiscent of the old classics at The Dell."
-
HALF-TIME
MOTD's Alistair Mann at Sports Direct Arena: "Newcastle's fans seem shell-shocked and they'll be going off for their half-time cups of tea with bemused looks on their faces. In truth Villa are good value for their lead and, when Newcastle have had opportunities, they've found Brad Guzan in good form in the Villa goal."

1649:HALF-TIME- Southampton 1-1 Man Utd
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
GOAL Rangers 0-1 Elgin City: After a bright start, Elgin stun the Ibrox crowd with the opening goal, as Jamie Duff curls a superb shot past Neil Alexander.
-
1648:
Southampton have kept Robin van Persie fairly quiet since his goal but he almost caught them out here, right on the stroke of half-time.
Michael Carrick pinged a beautifully lobbed pass over the Saints defence and found Van Persie running through on goal, but this time the Dutchman's control lets him down and the ball rolls out of play.
-
1647:HALF-TIME- Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa
-
Kevin, Oakham, via text: "Man United's defence is looking very old and ordinary, even Vidic doesn't seem as invincible anymore!"
Conor, via text: "I never thought I'd say this, but having Carrick in midfield gives us a real measure of control, something we missed against Fulham and Everton."
-
1645:
Newcastle are back on the attack too, with Gael Bigirimana sending over a decent delivery from the right that Papiss Cisse should do a lot better with - but he sends his header wide from about six yards out.
Villa still lead 1-0 and we are into injury time at the end of the first-half.
-
Scott Barclay on Twitter: "Come on NUFC. Haven't really got started this season yet. We need Ben Arfa and Cisse to put in a performance."
Craig Boyle on Twitter: "NUFC have looked sluggish and lethargic aside from the Spurs game. Not yet looked like the fluid attacking team of last year."
Alasdair Brown on Twitter: "Why isn't Ciaran Clark banned today after his sending off last week? Don't PL bans begin immediately?"
Alasdair - Goalscorer Clark served his one-game ban in Villa's midweek League Cup win against Tranmere.
-
1643:
Better from United, who have got some of their poise back and are building attacks more patiently now.
Their latest attack again involves Antonio Valencia down the right and, with Saints defender Nathaniel Clyne slipping over, Patrice Evra is unmarked when he meets his cross at the back post. Evra directs a bouncing header goalwards but he cannot get enough power behind it to beat Kelvin Davis.
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
GOAL Motherwell 4-1 Inverness: Motherwell are well on course to top the Scottish Premier League table tonight as Michael Higdon completes his hat-trick with a powerful drive.
-
1641:
Villa seem to have weathered the Newcastle storm, or at least survived that flurry of Magpies attacks. Paul Lambert's side have not managed to create any sort of opening since they took the lead, but at least they are not defending for dear life any more.
-
1638:
Saints are neat and tidy when they get the ball but the final pass is eluding them at the moment. United are a lot more direct but are not getting much joy in attack at the moment either - we have been playing for 37 minutes and the 1-1 scoreline is a fair reflection on the game.
-
1637:SUBSTITUTION- Gael Bigirimana for Danny Simpson (Newcastle)
An enforced change for Newcastle. Danny Simpson has picked up a hamstring injury and Gael Bigirimana is on for his Premier League debut.
-
Opta Joe on Twitter: "Rickie Lambert has scored against both Man Utd and Man City this season. Only Defoe and Crouch managed this in 2011/12. Pedigree."
-
Lewis on Twitter: "The Southampton left back may as well go home and have his Sunday roast. Valencia is all over him..."
Daniel Fox is his name and, yes, Antonio Valencia is giving him a torrid time.
-
1633:
Nice work by Adam Lallana as Southampton look to counter, with his clever run getting him behind the United defence and into their area. His eventual cross from the right isn't bad either, but it ends up looping to deep for Rickie Lambert, and United clear.
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
GOAL Motherwell 3-1 Inverness: It looks like Motherwell have wrapped up the three points as Michael Higdon latches on to a short pass-back by David Raven and fires his second of the match.
-
1631:
Manchester United are indeed looking for more goals. Robin van Persie is, unsurprisingly, involved again but he is off target this time, curling a free-kick over the Saints wall from 25 yards out but also wide of Kelvin Davis' right-hand post.
-
Rory on Twitter: "One chance. One goal. One Robin van Persie."
Grant Miller on Twitter: "He is just clinical. You knew he was going to score that. Immaculate."
Declan Wilson on Twitter: "Very flat by United. Lots of nice passing but no penetration...but with Van Persie we only need a sniff."
-
BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan at St Mary's: "That's what £24m gets you. Robin van Persie, whose movement has been excellent throughout, finds space inside the Saints box to level for United. Noteworthy that, having been very narrow throughout the game, the first time United play with any width through Valencia they scored. Saints are on the rack here."
-
1630:
Newcastle continue to knock on the door. First, Demba Ba crosses for Papiss Cisse, who gets plenty of power behind his shot but sees it turned round the post by Brad Guzan.
Then Davide Santon fizzes a shot wide from the edge of the area. Not sure whether Guzan would have got to that.
-
Graham Taylor, BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary'sOn Van Persie's equaliser: "Before the cross comes in, Van Persie drifted away from his marker Clyne. Yes, he was unfortnate to slip but Van Persie made his position. Once he chested the ball down on to that left foot, you knew where it was going. Typical Van Persie strike, typical Van Persie goal."
-
1628:PENALTY APPEAL
We've seen a decent response from Newcastle as well, and they had a shout for a penalty when Demba Ba tangled with Eric Lichaj inside the box. Referee Lee Probert was unimpressed, however.
-
1626:GOAL- Southampton 1-1 Man Utd - Robin van Persie (24 mins)
United are not behind for long, though. Talk about a trademark Robin van Persie finish too, with the Dutchman chesting down a cross from Antonio Valencia at the back post and slamming the ball home.
-
BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan at St Mary's: "Cracking atmosphere inside St Mary's as Rickie Lambert heads Southampton in front. It followed a period of decent possession from the hosts with Adam Lallana and fellow midfielder James Ward-Prowse showing just why Saints boss Nigel Adkins rates them so highly."
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
It's still 2-1 to Motherwell against Inverness with around half-an-hour to play at Fir Park. In Glasgow, Lee McCulloch will captain Rangers following Friday's departure of Carlos Bocanegra to Racing Santander on loan, with the match against Elgin kicking off at 16:30 BST.
-
1622:GOAL- Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa - Ciaran Clark (22 mins)
First an Aston Villa chance, now an Aston Villa goal. From Barry Bannan's precise clipped cross, Ciaran Clark finds himself unmarked in front of goal to stoop and head his side in front. Not sure what happened to the Magpies defence because they were nowhere to be seen.
-
1622:
A goal at St Mary's and a chance at Sports Direct Arena. It's all happening... Villa are the team who go close, and it falls for the man they'd want it to fall to, Darren Bent. He cuts onto his left foot on the right side of the box and drives a low effort which is parried by Tim Krul, then Fabricio Coloccini reacts quickest to deny Andreas Weimann a simple tap-in.
-
Injured Newcastle defender Ryan Taylor on Twitter: "Just heard about the message on the back of the lads tops for me. That's why I love this football club and everyone involved."
-
Graham Taylor, BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's"That was a typical goalscorers goal, attacking the back post. He outjumped Rafael very easily. It came against the run of play - but do these Southampton supporters care? No."
-
1618:GOAL- Southampton 1-0 Man Utd - Rickie Lambert (16 mins)
Grey kits? Who needs em. Southampton are ahead. Morgan Schneiderlin makes a superb interception to cut out a Tom Cleverley pass near the half-way line, and feeds Jason Puncheon on the right. Puncheon curls in a delicious cross towards the back post and Rickie Lambert rises high above the hapless Rafael to power his header past Anders Lindegaard.
-
Graham Taylor, BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's"Sir Alex Ferguson has to make a decision about De Gea and Lindegaard because there has been a lot of discussion about the goalkeeping position at Manchester United. I think it will get sorted this season."
-
1616:
Here's Southampton's first sniff of goal, from a cleverly-worked corner. Saints push everyone on to the United goal-line before Adam Lallana peels away and cuts back to meet a low delivery near the penalty spot... he does not connect with his shot, however, and the ball trickles wide.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"Brendan Rodgers asked would he have let Carroll go if he knew Liverpool would not sign anyone: 'No.' Was he confident he would: 'Very.' Rodgers then refused to completely dismiss the idea that he might move for Michael Owen. Intriguing press conference. "
-
1614:
Saints come forward with a bit of purpose for the first time, with Rickie Lambert scrapping for the ball on the edge of the United area, before Jason Puncheon tries to find Lambert with a looping deep cross. United hold out, comfortably, but perhaps they won't get things all their own way today.
-
1611:
Meanwhile, at the other end of the country, it has been a very quiet start at Sports Direct Arena. Newcastle have lifted a couple of balls into the Villa area but Brad Guzan, in for Shay Given today, deals with them comfortably enough.
-
1608:
A first half-chance for Robin van Persie, latching on to a lofted pass from Michael Carrick, taking the ball down on his chest... and pulling his shot wide. United are still well on top here but they are yet to create their first real opening.
-
Injured Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney on Twitter: "Much more nervous watching the game rather than playing, come on the Reds."
Er, hopefully it won't take Wayne long to notice that Southampton are playing in red today.
-
Adam Watkinson on Twitter: "Re 1559. The Ryan Taylor Over The Wall thing is a chant the fans started after he scored a free-kick against Sunderland last season."
-
1604:
Southampton cannot get out of their own half but are at least holding on to the ball now. United did have a shot on goal during that spell of early pressure, but Rafael's drilled effort from the edge of the box was blocked.
-
1603:
United have made a fast start, and are camped in the Saints half already.
In the north-east, Newcastle threatened from a free-kick when Fabricio Coloccini collected the ball in the area, but his shot was deflected wide.
-
Jamie Hardisty on Twitter: "Big game for Newcastle today, we should be beating Villa at home. I want a performance from Cisse, he's been sluggish lately."
Crip Cooke on Twitter: Villa have such a young, promising squad. Will youthful desire & exuberance be enough to see them through today? I'm hoping so."
-
1602:KICK-OFF- Southampton v Man Utd
And Manchester United have just got us started on the south coast too.
-
1601:KICK-OFF- Newcastle v Aston Villa
We are under way at Sports Direct Arena.
-
1559:
The Newcastle players are wearing training tops with a message reading 'Ryan Taylor over the wall' on the back. Not sure what that means (possibly his free-kick prowess) but it is obviously directed at their defender, who is out for several months after suffering a cruciate injury in the Europa League win against Atromitos on Thursday.
-
James, via text: "Disappointed to hear De Gea won't be starting today, I believe he could be a great keeper with enough game time to acclimatise to the Premier League. Although very excited to see what Kagawa and Van Persie can conjure between them for the boss' 1000th game."
-
1558:FULL-TIME- Cardiff 3-1 Wolves
-
1556:
The players are in the tunnel at St Mary's. Southampton are wearing that red-with-white-pinstripes kit that makes them look like a 1980s Liverpool.
United are in their white shirts and black shorts away strip - good thing they didn't put them in the wash together, otherwise they might have been in grey again.

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
HALF-TIME: Hearts 0-1 Dundee: Dundee still lead after Ryan Conroy's second-minute penalty, with John Sutton's spot-kick for the home side saved by veteran Dundee keeper Ran Douglas.
Motherwell 2-1 Inverness: It's on a knife-edge at Fir Park, with Motherwell having raced into a two-goal lead before Inverness pulled one back before the break. A classic 'next-goal-is-vital' situation.
-
Anthony Rhodes on Twitter: "Aston Villa's squad is a list of randomers no-one has heard of, plus Darren Bent. Surely three points to Newcastle this afternoon?"
Laura O'Donnell on Twitter: "Recognise very few of those Villa players. They could be in for a very long afternoon especially the defence."
-
1555:
It's fair to say that Brendan Rodgers has had a difficult start to his time as Liverpool boss. After today's defeat by Arsenal, he has only one point from three league games at Anfield but is backing his side to turn things round after the international break.
"I am disappointed with the scoreline and the goals we conceded," Rodgers said. "I can't fault the players, they have given everything but we have things to work on, needing to keep the ball better and Arsenal did that well in the final period. Giving the ball away has nothing to do with the style of play. There is a long way to go. We should have had a penalty when Luis Suarez was fouled but you need to stick the ball in the net."
-
1550:
Gaston Ramirez, Southampton's £12m new record signing, has just been paraded to fans at St Mary's. No new faces in the United squad, although Rio Ferdinand is making his first appearance of the season.
-
Rishi Verma on Twitter: "Disappointed to see De Gea dropped. Howler (v Fulham) or no howler, he's actually had a very good start to the season."
Sam Halbert on Twitter: "Valencia, Kagawa, Welbeck and Van Persie is unbelievably scary for Southampton."
Simon Kalolo St on Twitter: "Mayuka vs United is the game here in Zambia. Come on Mayuka - Zambia is behind you."
-
1549:
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been talking before kick-off at St Mary's about his decision to drop David de Gea: "I think young David made a mistake last week and he knows it. He's been in good form and made some great saves, but that mistake could have cost us a game. It's just a learning process for him. He will be back in the team in a couple of weeks' time."
Ferguson will take charge of his 1000th league match as United manager today and added "It's been a fantastic period and a fantastic journey."
-
Newcastle v Aston Villa (16:00)
Newcastle name an unchanged side to the one beaten at Chelsea last week. New Aston Villa signing Christian Benteke, who reportedly cost £7m from Belgian side Genk, was not registered in time to face the Magpies, while the same applies to another transfer deadline-day recruit, former Crewe midfielder Ashley Westwood.
Brad Guzan replaces Shay Given in goal, Chris Herd, who started against Everton, does not make the squad, while Gabriel Agbonlahor is on the bench after injury.
-
1543:
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sounds pretty pleased too, after seeing his side follow up their draws against Sunderland and Stoke with a win at Anfield.
"The sharpness gets better from game to game but overall we looked solid and scored two goals," Wenger said. "We missed opportunities on the counter-attack at the start of the game but we had a convincing team performance."
-
Injured Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna on Twitter: "Hey! Abou! Everyone already knew he was very good...for the ones who still wonder...he answered properly to your questions!"
-
1540:
So, an impressive win for Arsenal, and an impressive display by Abou Diaby. The Arsenal midfielder ran the show at times and was happy to help his side register their first Premier League win of the season.
"We are really happy to win after drawing first two games," Diaby said. "We were very strong defensively. It means a lot to me because I really want to play football, this year I am back and I hope to stay like this until the end of the season. The whole team have had a strong game and we need to keep going."

Simon Blythe on Twitter: "Everyone going on about Allen, what about Arteta?? 18 more passes, with a higher success rate. Majestic."
David Willis on Twitter: "Excellent performance all round, the new players played very well and Diaby looks reborn. Massive bonus having him fit."
James Paul on Twitter: "Steve Bould has certainly made his mark on the Arsenal defence. Three clean sheets in potentially difficult games. Top job!"
-
1537:Newcastle v Aston Villa (16:00)
Newcastle were consistently linked with former striker Andy Carroll throughout the transfer window, but manager Alan Pardew - who kept hold of all of last season's influential players - believes the lack of exits will prove more significant than the absence of major signings. "Maybe next week the fans will realise we haven't done badly to keep all our top players here," said Pardew. "We have had to fend off a few and we have done that, and we are well set for the season. Another year of experience, of course, should make us better this year - should."

1534:
By the way, Marian Pahars may well still be the Latvian Michael Owen, but that doesn't mean he is now spending his days watching Sky Sports News and tweeting every couple of hours about how he will be "getting a new club soon".
Pahars, who left Southampton in 2006 after scoring 43 goals in 137 league games, is now manager of top Latvian team Skonto.
-
1533:
Thing is, that was when Southampton played at The Dell, an old-school ramshackle stadium but one that always seemed to have an electric atmosphere, especially when the big-boys were in town.
Saints record againt United at St Mary's, where they moved to in 2001, has not been quite so impressive. Marian Pahars scored the winner when the two sides last met at the Dell but, since then, Southampton have won only once in the seven occasions they have hosted Sir Alex Ferguson's men.
In his preview for today's game, Jonathan Pearce recalls a 2-1 win for United in the spring of 2005 that saw Southampton relegated. This is the first time they have met in the top flight since.

Tony Ashton, via text: "If United lose today we can't blame the kit again so need to think of another lame excuse just in case!"
-
1532:
Not so long ago, Southampton always SEEMED to beat Manchester United.
They didn't, obviously, but the two sides have had some of the most memorable meetings in the Premier League era, including three straight home wins for the Saints starting in the 1995/96 season, a time when they were relegation fodder and United were the dominant force in English football.
Yes, I'm talking the grey kit debacle (when United changed kits after trailing 3-0 at half-time), Egil Ostenstad's hat-trick, Matt Le Tissier's delicious lob and also a Kevin Davis winner.

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL UPDATE
Motherwell 2-0 Inverness: What a start for the Steelmen as Chris Humphrey crosses for Michael Higdon to convert. It's a long way back now for Inverness, who find themselves two down less than 15 minutes in.
-
1530:GOAL- Cardiff 3-1 Wolves - Peter Whittingham (65 mins)
The goals dried up in Wales, didn't they? They are flowing again now, though. Peter Whittingham completes his hat-trick with his best goal so far, as he whips a glorious free-kick over the Wolves defensive wall into the top corner.
-
Injured Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney on Twitter: "Good luck to the lads, today will be tough game. Hopefully we will get three points. Van Persie to score first."
-
1528:Southampton v Man Utd (16:00)
Two changes for Southampton from their 2-0 home defeat by Wigan. Teenage midfielder James Ward-Prowse, 17, and winger Jason Puncheon replace Saints' £7m summer signing Jay Rodriguez and Guly do Prado in Nigel Adkins' starting XI. There is no place for Saints' record signing Gaston Ramirez as he was not registered in time while fellow new signing Emmanuel Mayuka is on the bench.
After his howler against Fulham last week David de Gea is replaced by Anders Lindegaard in the Manchester United goal. Rio Ferdinand also returns in defence with Michael Carrick moving into midfield. There is no Ashley Young through injury so Danny Welbeck plays up front with Robin Van Persie while Shinji Kagawa drops into midfield.
-
Tim, via text: "Arsenal the only team yet to concede this season, including trips to Liverpool and Stoke. Time to update the stereotype book?"
-
Newcastle v Aston Villa (16:00)
MOTD's Alistair Mann at Sports Direct Arena: "Of all the teams in the Premier League, Newcastle's expectations seem the most difficult to assess after their success last season. Their recent fortunes have been in sharp contrast to those of Aston Villa, who are at the foot of the early-season table and without a victory in their last 12 Premier League games. One bright spot for manager Paul Lambert was Darren Bent scoring against Tranmere in the Capital One Cup in midweek - Villa desperately need him back at his prolific best."
-
Southampton v Man Utd (16:00)
BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan at St Mary's: "The last time Manchester United were at St Mary's in the league, they sent Southampton down. Six managers have come and gone since that day in 2005 with Nigel Adkins their seventh.
"But Sir Alex Ferguson has remained a constant presence and Manchester United's boss takes charge of his 1000th league game today. The form book would suggest a United victory with Adkins' side yet to win a point, but these two have history and Saints fans will never forget their 6-3 league victory in 1996 or the FA Cup success in 1976."
-
1525:
Plenty of fall-out to come from that result at Anfield, but let's turn our attention to St Mary's and the Sports Direct Arena, and our two top-flight 16:00 kick-offs...
-
1523:
Liverpool are without a win after three games of the new season but things are looking up for Arsenal. They have now kept three clean sheets and are up to seventh in the fledgling Premier League table.
-
1522:FULL-TIME- Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal
-
1521:
We are into the last minute of added time. Brendan Rodgers is about to equal the worst start for a Liverpool manager (Roy Evans also got one point) over three league games since George Patterson in 1927.
-
1519:YELLOW CARD- Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey
Having just fired in a second fierce long-range effort to force another stop from Vito Mannone, Jonjo Shelvey is now in Howard Webb's book after a shove on Aaron Ramsey. We are into injury-time at Anfield.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"Arsenal fans going through the full range of taunts directed at Liverpool: 'You're The Spurs Of Merseyside.'"
-
Mohamed Toorani on Twitter: "In Arsene We Trust. Arsene knows...always has and always will Gooners! Keep the faith. Things are looking bright."
Jack Mosley on Twitter: "Vermaelen has been excellent today."
-
1518:SUBSTITUTION- Laurent Koscielny for Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal)
Thomas Vermaelen has been busy of late but he is also feeling the effects of a nasty fall out by the left touchline a few minutes ago. Koscielny is on for the final few moments.
-
1518:Newcastle v Aston Villa (16:00)
BREAKING: Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has dropped keeper Shay Given following a costly mistake against Everton, with American Brad Guzan starting in goal. Given, of course, spent 12 years at Newcastle, playing more than 300 games for the club.
-
1516:
Again, Thomas Vermaelen comes to Arsenal's rescue. He is in the right place to put off Luis Suarez as he runs on to Steven Gerrard's through-ball. Suarez balloons his shot over - it really isn't Liverpool's day in front of goal.
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST:
A goal for Motherwell as Tom Hateley's whipped corner deceives Inverness goalkeeper Ryan Esson and ends in the net. Motherwell in front.
-
1516:
Liverpool are running out of time but they are still trying to get back into this game, even if they are still being restricted to efforts from range.
Jonjo Shelvey exchanges passes with Steven Gerrard and makes space for a powerful shot from the edge of the area that Vito Mannone pushes away and Thomas Vermaelen reacts quickly to beat Luis Suarez to the loose ball.
-
1513:
Just five minutes left at Anfield. The Arsenal fans are making all the noise, as you might expect. Brendan Rodgers has quite a lot to think about during the international break.
-
Ade, via text: "A whole huge portion of blame for this Liverpool team lies squarely at the feet of Kenny Dalglish for wasting such a huge kitty last season on four painfully average players. Two of which are deemed not good enough to start and two have been moved on."
Will, London, via text: "Silver lining for Liverpool. Sterling looks a cracking young player, so much potential. Shame the rest of them have no penetration in the final third."
-
1511:Southampton v Man Utd (16:00)
BREAKING: Anders Lindegaard, Rio Ferdinand and Danny Welbeck all come into Manchester United's starting line-up. Full team news to follow shortly.
-
1511:
Liverpool's best effort for a while sees Stewart Downing's stinging shot deflected wide but they are leaving some wide-open spaces at the back, and Jose Enrique has to scramble to deny Olivier Giroud as he looks to get on the end of a long ball forward.
-
1509:SUBSTITUTION- Andre Santos for Lukas Podolski (Arsenal)
-
1509:
Arsenal are content to play keep-ball now, whereas Liverpool are desperate to get the ball forward at every opportunity. Their problem is what they do when they reach the edge of the Gunners' area - that is where most of their attacks seem to end.
-
Adam Jones on Twitter: "Liverpool's performance hasn't been bad, but mistakes have cost them and Arsenal have the quality to punish the slightest error."
Leighton Martin on Twitter: "Struggling to stay positive. There's just nothing in the final third and our defence is frail. More work needed than thought."
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
Dundee have a penalty after only two minutes as Colin Nish is pushed by Hearts defender Marius Zaliukas. Ryan Conroy converts from the spot to score Dundee's first SPL goal of the season.
-
Josh, a worried Liverpool fan in Rugby, via text: "Having watched every minute of the season so far, the person I feel the most sorry for has to be Joe Allen. He hasn't put a foot wrong thus far and has been our best player in all three games. Whilst his former team appear to be moving forward, you can see he is getting disappointed by the incapabilties of his teammates."
-
1505:
Liverpool are not getting any closer to pulling a goal back. Jonjo Shelvey has just skewed a shot well wide of Vito Mannone's goal from the edge of the area and, in truth, the Reds seem to have run out of ideas up front.
-
Jan Molby, BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield"Again there are question marks about Reina's contribution. Arsenal have had the two outstanding players in the game - Diaby and Cazorla. Cazorla created all that himself and when he got the ball in that position you always felt there was danger for Liverpool."
-
1502:SUBSTITUTION- Aaron Ramsey for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has not had a particularly productive afternoon and Arsene Wenger brings on a more defensive-minded player in Aaron Ramsey to steady the ship with just over 15 minutes to go.
-
Jonny Green on Twitter: "Liverpool need to sign Jack Butland in January...Reina making far too many mistakes."
Matthew Jones on Twitter: "It never Reina, it poura."
Christopher Hall on Twitter: "Great build up, excellent passing and fully deserved second goal. Poor from Reina - should do much better. Anfield silenced."
-
1500:
It looked a nasty injury when I saw it yesterday, and Swansea City defender Neil Taylor has now been ruled out for the rest of the season with a broken ankle.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Anfield"In among the arguments over Liverpool's failure to sign a new striker, it should not be ignored that goalkeeper Pepe Reina probably cannot remember the last time he has serious competition for his place and he has been very poor for a long time now."
-
Matt, Sussex, via text: "Sat at home applauding Arteta, man of the match, not his favoured position but running his legs off and making great tackles. Deadline day diamond."
-
Ian Walsh, BBC Radio Wales at Cardiff City Stadium: "It's the best Championship game I've seen for a long while in terms of quality. The introduction of Craig Noone for Cardiff City on the left wing has been fantastic. He's an out-and-out winger and a joy to watch. Cardiff deserve to be ahead but Wolves have shown plenty to suggest they can score again."
-
1458:HALF-TIME- Cardiff 2-1 Wolves
-
1456:GOAL- Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal - Santi Cazorla (69 mins)
Ouch. Liverpool have got a lot more work to do now. Two of Arsenal's new-boys combine again, same as for their first goal, but this time Lukas Podolski plays in Santi Cazorla down the left of the area to somehow squeeze his shot past Pepe Reina with an angled effort at his near post. The Reds keeper will not enjoy watching replays of that one.
-
Tom Seagrim on Twitter: "Suarez pays the price for going to ground too easily on previous occasions. Clear shirt pull - penalty. No doubt."
James Williams on Twitter: "What Liverpool need right now is a striker to hold the ball up and let the others come into play...who could do that?"
Steven Richards on Twitter: "This is a very average Arsenal side. It won't compete with City, Utd or Chelsea, but they are making us look less than average."
-
1454:
Arsenal's best moments continue to come on the break. This time the ball falls for Santi Cazorla on the edge of the area and his low shot is only a few inches wide of Pepe Reina's left-hand post.
-
1451:
Martin Skrtel sparks an almighty goalmouth scramble after getting on the end of a corner - that isn't really the Liverpool way, let alone the Brendan Rodgers way, but they will take a goal any way they can get one now. Arsenal clear their lines but Steven Gerrard quickly bends the ball back into the danger zone, bringing Vito Mannone off his line to dive in and intercept his cross.
-
Paul, Rotherham, via text: "Good decision from Webb re penalty claim. Suarez goes down far too easily and gets exactly what he deserves - diddly squat."
-
1451:
We are into the last 30 minutes at Anfield, where Arsenal lead 1-0. Liverpool have done most of the attacking of late but Arsenal are still threatening sporadically. Their latest effort sees Carl Jenkinson cut in from the right and fire in a daisy-cutter that Pepe Reina easily collects.
-
Sana Ali on Twitter: "Mertesacker has been treading on thin ice for the majority of this game, matter of time before it breaks."
Harel Thompson on Twitter: "Liverpool could have had three penalties by now."
IW on Twitter: "Gibbs or Baines for England left back post-Ashley Cole?"
-
1447:
Luis Suarez goes to ground again, after being bundled off the ball by Thomas Vermaelen. It probably was a foul, having seen it again, but he made a right old meal of it which is probably why Howard Webb allows play to continue.
-
1445:
Stewart Downing does not take long to get involved, thinking about a shot himself before teeing up Luis Suarez on the edge of the box with a back-heel. Suarez takes aim and powers in a fizzing drive down the throat of Vito Mannone, who tips it over the bar.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"Downing on for Borini. No surprise - the Italian has not had the best of days. Big chance for Downing to make an impact."
-
Jan Molby, BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield"Arsenal started well in the second half, but now it's Liverpool, attacking the Kop end, on top. But you do wonder where the goals are going to come from."
-
1444:PENALTY APPEAL
Another penalty shout by Liverpool, again involving Luis Suarez. This time he clashes with Thomas Vermaelen inside the box, with the Arsenal defender falling on the ball. It touches his arm but he could do absolutely nothing about it.
-
Niall Stevenson on Twitter: "Has Howard Webb EVER given Liverpool a penalty! Clear penalty for Suarez!"
-
1443:SUBSTITUTION- Stewart Downing for Fabio Borini
A frustrating afternoon for Fabio Borini comes to an end. With no strikers on the Liverpool bench, Stewart Downing is on instead.
-
1441:GREAT SAVE!
Arsenal got a bit lucky there but they react by sweeping forward again, and only a fine low stop by Pepe Reina denies Kieran Gibbs.
-
1439:PENALTY APPEAL
Liverpool have finally got the ball back, and they are quickly on the attack. They want a penalty too, with Per Mertesacker tangling with Luiz Suarez as they try to reach a whipped low Steven Gerrard cross.
Replays show Mertesacker got a piece of Suarez's shirt, with the Liverpool striker swiftly going to ground... but Howard Webb is not convinced. No penalty.
-
1437:
This is impressive stuff from Arsenal - they are spraying the ball around nicely and Liverpool are chasing shadows at the moment.
-
SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LATEST
In Scotland, there are four matches today, two in the SPL and one each from the First and Third Divisions.
Hearts and Motherwell play their first matches since exiting the Europa League, with the former hosting Dundee and Inverness visiting Motherwell's Fir Park.
A spirited performance in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool generated praise for Hearts but their scorer in that match, David Templeton, joined Rangers on Friday. Dundee travel to Tynecastle hoping to score their first SPL goal and pick up their first league win of the season.
Templeton could make his Rangers debut in the Ibrox side's home match against Elgin City, while there is also a Division One encounter between Falkirk and Livingston.

Ally, Liverpool fan, via text: "Not the only positive for Liverpool, but Sterling looks incredible on the ball. Not like watching a 17-year-old at all."
-
1435:YELLOW CARD- Liverpool's Martin Skrtel
A needless one this from Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, who lunges in to catch Abou Diaby late after the Arsenal midfielder has flicked the ball away near the half-way line. Referee Howard Webb has a word, and shows him a yellow card too.
-
1434:
It is Arsenal who begin on the attack, with Santi Cazorla powering in a shot from the edge of the area that is blocked before it reaches Pepe Reina.
-
1433:KICK-OFF
Arsenal get the second half started at Anfield. No changes from either side at the break.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"Abou Diaby has been outstanding for Arsenal. Long-striding, powerful & set up a chance on a plate for Giroud...will his miss prove crucial?"
-
Dahood Olayode on Twitter: "Steve Bould's influence in Wenger's rebuilding process shouldn't go unnoticed! Defence looks unbelievably compact."
James Aylott on Twitter: "Diaby running the midfield in this game. Liverpool concentrating too much on Cazorla, giving Diaby the whole pitch to play in."
Kenneth Kipruto on Twitter: "Arsenal doesn't look that bad after all. Can only get better with the return of Wilshere and Sagna."
-
1430:
Arsenal, on the other hand, are resembling a proper cohesive unit. Yes, they are only having to soak up Liverpool's pretty lacklustre attacks, but they are keeping the home side quiet and looking dangerous whenever they break forward. If Olivier Giroud had steered his shot two yards to the right, they would be 2-0 up now.
-
Paul Thompson on Twitter: "Dare I say it but is Steven Gerrard's time up? Very sluggish start to the season. Giving away goals is not what he's about."
Lanre Ola on Twitter: "Saw Nuri Sahin in the line up. Was that a mistake BBC? Invisible."
John Aloisi on Twitter: "How long before Liverpool fans turn on Rodgers? Surely only a few weeks away."
-
1426:
Liverpool have not really got going yet, have they? We've not seen much of Nuri Sahin on the ball and Joe Allen has not had much possession outside of his own half. The Reds have got some life up front because Raheem Sterling and Luis Suarez are buzzing around, but Fabio Borini was not wearing his shooting boots in the first half.
-
Jan Molby, BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield"It has been a poor game. Lacks tempo, lacks aggression."
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at AnfieldHALF-TIME- Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal"Anfield is very subdued and understandably so. Both sides guilty of conceding possession - surprising given the devotion of Brendan Rodgers and Arsene Wenger to the passing game - and Arsenal took advantage of such carelessness to have the lead through Lukas Podolski."
-
Bill, Hereford, via text: "Liverpool haven't scored from open play yet this season and apart from Sterling, don't look like they have a chance of doing so at all."
Graeme, Aberdeen, via text: "Liverpool's lack of goals are well documented, but the frequency of goals conceded due to errors and loss of possession is a real cause for concern."
James, Surrey, via text: "Watching Liverpool play football is like watching a cat doing nothing."
-
1419:GOAL- Cardiff 2-1 Wolves - Peter Whittingham (14 mins)
Three goals in four minutes in Wales - surely they cannot keep that up? This time Cardiff turn defence into attack in a flash and Peter Whittingham scores his second of the game with a drilled effort from the edge of the area.
-
1418:GOAL- Cardiff 1-1 Wolves - Peter Whittingham, pen (11 mins)
Cardiff respond immediately as Peter Whittingham fires a penalty straight down the middle after debutant Craig Noone was fouled in the area by Ronald Zubar.
-
1418:HALF-TIME- Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal
-
Ruridh Allen on Twitter: "Think it is fair to say that people saying Diaby will be like a new signing are correct. He has been outstanding in the middle."
Andy Hudson on Twitter: "Arsenal fans should be praying Giroud doesn't turn out to be 'the next Stephane Gui'varch'. Shocking miss!"
Red Chump on Twitter: "Only positives I can take from Liverpool's first half is that Sterling is electric and Joe Allen is a great passer of the ball."
-
1417:
Raheem Sterling is definitely Liverpool's most dangerous player at the moment, dashing around and keeping the Arsenal defence on their toes. His shot into the side-netting remains the Reds' best chance of a frustrating first-half.
-
1416:
There will be two minutes of added time at the end of the first half at Anfield, and we have already had one minute of it.
-
1415:
Liverpool had a shout for a penalty just before that latest Arsenal counter-attack, with Per Mertesacker stretching out a long leg to stop Raheem Sterling in his tracks. Howard Webb felt he got the ball, though, and replays show the referee was right.
-
Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen on Twitter: "Decent game so far. Liverpool pressing but Arsenal looking dangerous on the counter attack."
-
1414:GOAL- Cardiff 0-1 Wolves - Bakary Sako (10)
Bakary Sako marks his Championship debut for Wolves with a cracking goal, beating Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall with a low thunderous drive from a free-kick.
-
1413:
Only a couple of minutes left until half-time at Anfield. The first 45 minutes have not been the most exciting of the season, but Arsenal will not care if they go in at the break in front.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"So much sloppy passing from both sides that someone was bound to take advantage sometime. Liverpool's Steven Gerrard was the culprit and that was a goal that will do Arsenal and Lukas Podolski the power of good. A rare moment of quality in a poor game."
-
Garreth Frank on Twitter: "Podolski goal, Cazorla assist...new signing success and fantasy football delight."
Alan Oliver on Twitter: "Some of Liverpool's first touches and passing would disappoint Big Sam or John Beck, never mind Wenger or Rodgers!"
Sean Sonnekus on Twitter: "Am I the only one who thinks now Arsenal got one they could run riot? Got the quality to do it, just need the confidence."
-
1410:
Arsenal have had to do a lot of defending in the last few minutes but they should really be 2-0 up after breaking forward again. This time Abou Diaby strides forward and plays in Olivier Giroud, but his first-time shot flies wide. Liverpool have to be careful here.
-
1409:
Better by Liverpool, starting when Fabio Borini does brilliantly to keep the ball in play by the right-hand by-line. He ends up hoisting the ball into the Arsenal area and Thomas Vermaelen makes a mess of his header, allowing Raheem Sterling to collect the ball, twist into space and smash a rasping shot into the side netting. That is the closest the Reds have come to scoring so far.
-
Opta Joe on Twitter: "It took Arsenal 211 minutes to score in the Premier League this season, 14 minutes quicker than in 2011-12. Patience."
-
1406:
There has not much of a response from Liverpool since they fell behind, although Brendan Rodgers' side have had a couple of corners.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"More sloppiness in possession from Liverpool - and Podolski profits with a clinical finish for his first Arsenal goal. An overdue moment of quality in a poor game and that was slick from Arsenal and Podolski."
-
Jan Molby, BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield"Liverpool will be very disappointed to go behind. It was a mistake by Steven Gerrard in the Arsenal half, he gave away the ball and Podolski picked it up and played a lightning ball to Cazorla. If there was going to be a goal you knew it would have to involve Cazorla. He played the return ball to Podolski and once it reached his left foot you knew he would score."
-
1400:GOAL- Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal - Lukas Podolski (31 mins)
Steven Gerrard gives the ball away when he tries to play in Luis Suarez on the edge of the Arsenal area and, less than 10 seconds later, Arsenal are in front.
The Gunners quickly play the ball up to Santi Cazorla, who runs at the Liverpool defence before slipping the ball through to Lukas Podolski on the left of the area, and he beats Pepe Reina with a low finish. That is Arsenal's first Premier League goal of the season after more than 210 minutes.
-
Nic Billot on Twitter: "No chances, no goals. This game has got 4-4 written all over it."
Stuart Mckeown on Twitter: "Borini has a chance to really make himself a Liverpool hero early on in his career. If Neil Mellor can do it surely he can."
Aaron Morris on Twitter: "Once Sagna is back we will have one of, if not the, best defence in the league."
-
1358:YELLOW CARD- Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)
Another booking and another free-kick conceded by Arsenal, this time a little bit closer to the edge of their area. Thomas Vermaelen gives the ball away cheaply and Raheem Sterling makes for goal... only to be chopped down by Mikel Arteta.
When it is taken, the free-kick is nudged to Steven Gerrard, who tries to bend his shot round the wall but sees it blocked by a couple of on-rushing defenders.
-
1354:
Almost 25 minutes gone at Anfield and we await our first decent chance, let alone our first goal. Both sides are lacking a bit of quality and cutting-edge in the final third so far - which probably won't come as much of a shock to Liverpool or Arsenal fans.
-
Conor McNamara, BBC commentator"I've been at all three games that Santi Cazorla has played for Arsenal. Serious talent, but he's fluffed most shots that he's attempted so far. Cazorla bound to score a screamer now that I've tweeted that, but that's the one weak part of his game for me so far..."
-
1349:
Arsenal are not under any great pressure, however, and they are seeing a fair bit of the ball themselves. Thomas Vermaelen charges forward after Luis Suarez loses possession, but he drags his shot well wide of Pepe Reina's goal.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"To say Carl Jenkinson has made an uncertain start is to do him a great kindness."
-
1346:
The home side are definitely pushing hardest at the moment, and they have just had another couple of sniffs. First, Carl Jenkinson gives the ball away and allows Fabio Borini to take another pot-shot, which is blocked. Then Luis Suarez tries a clever lob over Vito Mannone, which doesn't quite come off.
-
Alex, Stamford, via text: "People worrying about Mannone should talk to a Hull fan. Quality player."
-
1343:
I wouldn't say this game is exactly opening up but we are seeing some chances at both ends. Liverpool threaten again when Steven Gerrard swings in an inviting corner but Daniel Agger, who is in acres of space, cannot make meaningful contact. A bit of a waste, that.
-
Mark G on Twitter: "I'm not saying Per wasn't holding Suarez back, but that was certainly a dive."
Sir Ade on Twitter: "Suarez and Sterling against Mertesacker who has the same turning circle as that of a German tanker."
Tokunbo on Twitter: "That was a VERY soft yellow card. Terrible decision."
-
1342:
Arsenal's first shot on goal follows soon afterwards. After a neat build-up, the ball breaks for Santi Cazorla on the edge of the box but his low shot is straight at Pepe Reina.
-
1340:
Liverpool striker Fabio Borini is certainly not afraid to have a pop, but again he is off target. This time Luis Suarez feeds him on the right-hand edge of the area, but his angled drive does not come close to testing Vito Mannone.
-
Jan Molby, BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield"So far all the play has been inbetween the two penalty areas. No penetration as yet."
-
LINE-UPS- Cardiff v Wolves (14:00 BST)
Cardiff: Marshall, McNaughton, Taylor, Hudson, Connolly, Whittingham, Smith, Noone, Mutch, Helguson, Maynard. Subs: Lewis, Cowie, Velikonja, Kim, Gunnarsson, Mason, Nugent.
Wolverhampton: Ikeme, Zubar, Johnson, Berra, Ward, Edwards, Peszko, Sako, Doumbia, Doyle, Ebanks-Blake. Subs: De Vries, Elokobi, Stearman, Nouble, Batth, Davis, Forde.
Referee: Andy D'Urso (Essex)
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield"Mertesacker booked after being tricked by Suarez. Suspect Liverpool want to see a lot of Suarez up against the German."
-
1337:YELLOW CARD- Arsenal's Per Mertesacker
Little Luis Suarez drops his shoulder and dribbles past Per Mertesacker about 25 yards from goal, and the only way the lumbering Arsenal defender can stop him is by fouling him. That's a yellow card, but Suarez wastes the resulting free-kick, blasting it high over the bar.
-
1335:
Our first shot on goal, and it comes from Liverpool's Fabio Borini. He advances from the halfway line, with the Arsenal defence retreating in front of him. That leaves the Italian space for a shot, which he sends skidding past Vito Mannone's right-hand post.
-
Jack, Norwich, via text: "As a Norwich fan at White Hart Lane yesterday, I can safely say that Arsenal shouldn't find it too hard finishing above Spurs this season."
-
1332:
This game has been on the scrappy side so far, and there have even been a couple of long balls from Liverpool... not what you would expect from a Brendan Rodgers side, that. Arsenal are also yet to settle.
-
Former Gunners striker Jay Bothroyd on Twitter: "Big game for Arsenal today. As a supporter I hope Arsenal will win but it's gonna be tough!"
-
1330:KICK-OFF
Liverpool get us under way.
-
Tom James on Twitter: "Anyone worried about Mannone should see Reina's calamity against Hearts."
Shane McMenemy on Twitter: "Arsenal's defence looks weak on paper. With Liverpool's attacking options I think Arsenal will concede their first goal today."
Matt Jones on Twitter: "To make it three games without conceding with Jenkinson and Mannone at the back would be astounding."
-
1326:
Moving swiftly on, the players have just emerged from the tunnel at Anfield. Today marks 99 years since legendary former Reds boss Bill Shankly was born, and there are several banners paying tribute to him in the stands.
-
1325:
And there was me thinking Liverpool and Arsenal had signed Noone (No-one). Geddit? Oh, forget it then...
-
Cardiff v Wolves (14:00 BST)
Cardiff City give debuts to new signings Nicky Maynard and Craig Noone, with Craig Bellamy and Ben Turner again missing with injury. Wolves hand Championship debuts to Bakary Sako and Razak Boukari.
-
Phil, Belfast, via text: "Only a few years ago, Andrey Arshavin dominated a game at Anfield. Now he can't even make the squad - sad to see such a talent wasted."
-
Matt Thomas on Twitter: "Re 1318. Looking forward to Sahin and Allen playing together. Could be very effective!"
-
1322:
It seems Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is expecting some goals today, though, and yes he thinks the Gunners will score them.
Speaking before kick-off at Anfield, he said: "The opening two games we faced two teams (Sunderland and Stoke) who defended very well and took minimum risk, but today will be more open and the pace of the game will be very high."
"We want to score goals because that is our strength without losing our defensive solidity. Liverpool are a good side and we will be tested defensively but I am sure we will score."
-
1318:
Goals are a problem for Arsenal at the moment too - they have not conceded any in their first two games, but they have not scored any either. Still, Santi Cazorla looks a catch and he is sure to create a few chances for the men up top. Ditto with Nuri Sahin for Liverpool - it will be interesting to see how he links up with Joe Allen in the Reds midfield.
-
Rajan Gill on Twitter: "Liverpool team looks STRONG today, the bench...not so much. Not a single striker on it...bring back Michael Owen?"
Ben Elliott on Twitter: "Am I the only one who's apprehensive about Mannone in goal? Especially with the Olympiakos debacle at the back of my mind."
Keith Yung on Twitter: "Liverpool and Arsenal, two of the 'big four', spent a net estimate of £21m this summer, while the newly promoted Saints spent £28m."
-
1315:
Lawro is predicting a tight game at Anfield today, but he remains worried about the threat Liverpool pose in front of goal.
"They were good last weekend and deserved to beat Manchester City but their problem - and this is the same one from last year - is goals," he explained. "If Luis Suarez doesn't score or Steven Gerrard chip in, who is going to score on a regular basis? How they perform in front of goal will be the main difference between finishing fourth or not."
-
Collins Owusu on Twitter: "Before the match starts can they please allow Sterling and Oxlade-Chamberlain to run a 100 metre dash? Let's see who is fastest."
Great idea. I'd like to see Per Mertesacker and Jamie Carragher in that race too, just to see how far behind they finish...
-
1307:
Speaking before kick-off, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers does not sound a very happy chappy when he is asked if he would have liked to have brought more players in before the transfer window shut. "That was always the plan," Rodgers said. "We would like to have strengthened of course but my focus and concentration now is on the players we have got."
-
Jay P Allan on Twitter: "Neither Arsenal nor Liverpool have a striker to call upon from the bench today. Lack of depth could prove costly during season."
Bryn Griffiths on Twitter: "It very much scares me as a Liverpool fan that there is no striker on the bench. No-one to make an impact if things look grim."
Laksh on Twitter: "Hoping to see Sterling build on his performance against City. A great talent and good for him to get first team exposure."
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at AnfieldLiverpool v Arsenal (13:30 BST)"Liverpool give a debut to midfield man Nuri Sahin, on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, while 17-year-old Raheem Sterling gets another chance to shine from the start. Arsenal are still without injured Wojciech Szczesny so Vito Mannone continues in goal. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is preferred to Theo Walcott in Arsene Wenger's starting line-up."
-
James on Twitter: "Going for a 2-0 Cardiff win today, Maynard and Whitts to score. Come on City!"
-
Opta Joe on Twitter: "Liverpool have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games against Arsenal (W1 D6 L3). Outgunned."
-
Untitled on Twitter: "Re 1235. Oh do be quiet Chris. Brendan made that nutcase comment in the expectation that the owners would back him. Don't blame BR."
-
1256:
No heat for Brendan Rodgers from the Liverpol fans, though. It is the club's owners who are getting most of the stick for the Reds' failure to strengthen their strike force.
Will his opposite number at Arsenal Arsene Wenger get such a sympathetic hearing if his side's winless start continues today?
-
1253:LINE-UPS- Liverpool v Arsenal (13:30 BST)
Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Jose Enrique, Gerrard, Allen, Sahin, Borini, Suarez, Sterling. Subs: Jones, Henderson, Coates, Downing, Carragher, Shelvey, Kelly.
Arsenal: Mannone, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Diaby, Arteta, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cazorla, Podolski, Giroud. Subs: Martinez, Koscielny, Andre Santos, Walcott, Ramsey, Coquelin, Gervinho.
Referee: Howard Webb (S Yorkshire)
-
Guy Mowbray, BBC Sport"Going retro with the tunes at Anfield today. Steps followed by Backstreet Boys. Heck we're into Christina Aguilera now. Think it must be Now 36 album(ish).
-
Phil, Anfield, via text: "'Tragedy' by Steps just came on over the Anfield PA system - an excellent commentary on the Reds transfer policy."
-
Jan Molby, BBC Radio 5 live"Arsenal will not challenge for the title again this season. In terms of the top four, they will challenge again - they are a top four club now."
-
Jamie Atkins on Twitter: "Most exciting Arsenal line up for years! The Ox, Podolski, Giroud, Carzola, Arteta, Diaby! Amazing!"
Mashidur Miah on Twitter: "Arsenal have not scored a goal as of yet but look on the bright side, Arsenal are the only side yet to concede in the league!"
Ben Shutt on Twitter: "I can see Arsenal taking this game, we've defended well so far, and surely one of our new players is going to score today..."
-
1248:
We are barely into September, yet some managers are already feeling the early-season heat. I'm talking to you Mark Hughes and Andre Villas-Boas. There has been a rumour that Nigel Adkins is on his way out of Southampton too, which would be incredibly harsh when you also bear in mind he has just led them to back-to-back promotions, but the club have denied reports that Harry Redknapp is set to return to St Mary's.
-
Zain Patel on Twitter: "I think Shelvey deserved to start after his performance against City, but I'm sure Sahin will prove to be a great signing."
Richard Neal on Twitter: "Suarez has no competition for his place now. He's under no pressure to play well every week, that's worse than no cover in my opinion."
Cam Dockerill on Twitter: "This Liverpool XI is the strongest it has been for a couple of years. Rest of the squad lacks depth and quality."
-
1243:
So what are we expecting today? Will it be Arsenal or Liverpool getting off the mark, will Aston Villa get off the bottom of the table and will Southampton roll back the years to surprise Manchester United? I want you to share your thoughts on your club's transfer window activity too.
Tweet the text commentary using the hashtag #bbcfootball or text me on 81111. Make sure you put YOUR NAME on those texts, though, because I can't use them otherwise.
-
1239:
The Reds meet the Gunners at Anfield (at 13:30 BST) in the first of today's three top-flight games, with both Brendan Rodgers and Arsene Wenger looking for their first Premier League win of the season.
That game is followed by Newcastle against rock-bottom (yes I know they've only played twice) Aston Villa and Southampton against Manchester United (both at 16:00).
We've also got action in the Championship (Cardiff v Wolves, KO 14:00), League One (Preston v Swindon 15:00) and the Scottish Premier League (Hearts v Dundee and Motherwell v Inverness CT both 15:00) to look forward to. Fill those boots.
-
Liverpool defender Jose Enrique on Twitter: "Good morning. Great game today against a very good team. We have to win today!!! Come on!!!!"
-
1237:Liverpool v Arsenal (13:30 BST)
BREAKING: Liverpool hand a Premier League debut to Nuri Sahin and Jose Enrique returns at left-back. Wojciech Szczesny again misses out for Arsenal so Vito Mannone deputises.
Full line-ups to follow in a tick.
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at AnfieldLiverpool v Arsenal (13:30 BST)"Liverpool and Arsenal remained inactive on transfer deadline day - and the priority for managers Brendan Rodgers and Arsene Wenger today is to get their first Premier League win of the season. Liverpool were impressive in drawing against champions Manchester City last Sunday while Arsenal's point at Stoke City was also creditable, but that first win cannot come soon enough."
-
1235:
Yes, with Clint Dempsey joining Tottenham, it's fair to say that Liverpool fans did not get the finish to the transfer window they wanted. Mind you, at least they can compare notes about underwhelming deadline-day dealings and lack of transfer funds in the club coffers with their Arsenal counterparts today... he has never actually CALLED HIMSELF a nutcase, but some Gunners fans have been questioning Arsene Wenger's sanity for years.
Unlike Liverpool, the Gunners are not short of new strikers, in the shape of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski, but we are still waiting to really see how Arsene Wenger's men will shape up in the absence of Robin van Persie and Alex Song, who left this summer to become the latest in a long line of star departures.
-
1232:
Hello. Before I go on, the astute among you might have noticed that Andy Carroll put in a man-of-the-match performance yesterday... for West Ham.
Liverpool's striker signings in the last week before the window shut? One.
Eighteen-year-old Samed Yesil, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of around £1m and told the club's official website: "The first thing is that I have to train and then in one or two years I hope, step by step, to be in the first team."
-
1230:
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, speaking on 23 August about his limited options up front: "I need a minimum of three strikers - once the window shuts, that is it until January.
"I have got Luis Suarez, Fabio Borini and Andy Carroll. So I would need to be a nutcase to even consider at this moment letting Andy Carroll go out, unless there are other solutions for that."
