As it happened

  1. 0009:

Right, it is more than an hour since the transfer window closed and time for me to bid you all goodnight. Thanks for keeping me company over the past few hours and I hope you got what you wanted on deadline day. No need for Liverpool fans to answer that question, though.

Keep checking the BBC website for news of Joao Moutinho's proposed move from Porto to Tottenham and hopefully we will have news of what happened to him by the time I see you all again for Saturday's Premier League games. Cheerio for now.

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Everton still trying for loan deal - Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe from Club Brugge the player in question."

New West Ham midfielder Yossi Benayoun, who has rejoined the Hammers on loan from Chelsea: "I'm very happy to confirm that I will join on loan to West Ham! Can't wait to start. Great club."

Tottenham, as ever, were busy on transfer deadline day. The arrival of Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was no surprise but the signing of Fulham's Clint Dempsey certainly was.

Liverpool's failure to complete a deal after their offer was rejected by Fulham completed a fruitless deadline day which will undoubtedly disappoint manager Brendan Rodgers after he cleared Andy Carroll off the wage bill to West Ham and brought in £4m from the sale of Charlie Adam to Stoke City. Their failure to make Fulham an acceptable offer is a sign of more austere times at Anfield.

Manchester City, predictably, were big spenders as they parted with £38m to sign Benfica's Javi Garcia, Fiorentina defender Matija Nastasic, Maicon from Inter Milan and Swansea City winger Scott Sinclair.

One man who hoped to be involved in deadline day - but ended up still without a club - was Michael Owen. Still time though, as he is a free agent and he remains hopeful of being back in football soon.

  5. 2359:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "So, it seems to have ended up as a yes and a no from Portugal to the Premier League today. The signing of Javi Garcia is a coup for Roberto Mancini, and not nearly as expensive as it could have been at an initial £16m. With all due respect to Nigel de Jong, Garcia is a huge upgrade. Brought through the Real Madrid academy he is of good stock, but has improved his game tenfold since arriving in Lisbon. The 25-year-old is strong, good in the air, a good passer and has the adaptability to play at centre-back too. Perhaps the best aspect for City is that his power will allow Yaya Toure to be used further forward more often.

"On the other hand, missing out on Moutinho will be a source of huge disappointment to Andre Villas-Boas. The midfielder isn't just a great player, but a player who could help unfold AVB's vision on the pitch - and he believes in the coach just as much as Villas-Boas believes in him. Even for a gnarled businessman like Daniel Levy it is, however, never a good idea to be stuck bartering with Porto on the final day of the window. Their president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has been there, got the T-shirt and sold it on at a handsome profit."

  6. 2356:

Er, five of them actually. All five joining Watford from Udinese.

The Hornets have secured season-long loans for five players, with the option for permanent deals next summer. Defenders Jean-Alain Fanchone, 23, Neuton Piccoli, 22, and Lars Ekstrand, 23, have joined along with midfielder Cristian Battocchio, 20, and striker Fernando Forestieri, 22.

They have now signed 10 players on loan from the Serie A outfit this summer.

  7. 2353:

Not much unfinished business left now, but we are still awaiting official word either way on whether Tottenham's £20m bid for Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho has gone through.

Steve Claridge, BBC Radio 5 live

"I don't think we've ever seen a deadline day to such an extent and depth as we've seen today. It's been an absolute frenzy. People have just tried to make doubly sure that they could get the players to get what they need, and they needed them today."

Elliot, a Liverpool fan, on 81111 on text: "How soon can we recall Andy Carroll from his loan??"

Sam from Worthing on 81111 on text: "Well done Newcastle! Nice quiet day!"

Marc in Hertfordshire, an Arsenal fan, on 81111 on text: "Very disappointing. Only two mid-order strikers. Bring back David Dein to combat Wenger's dithering."

  10. 2342:

It's done and dusted and it's the biggest deal of the day, and it will stay that way unless Joao Moutinho goes to Tottenham. Manchester City have snapped up 25-year-old Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia for £16m.

  11. 2336:

Everton and Fulham were in for him but Stoke City have got him. The Potters have confirmed the signing of 23-year-old Blackburn midfielder Steven N'Zonzi.

  12. 2332:

Former Portsmouth striker Dave Kitson, 32, has signed a deal with Sheffield United until 31 December.

  13. 2330:

Aston Villa's new Belgian striker Christian Benteke has been talking about his move from Genk, saying: "Villa are a very historic club and my colleagues on international duty have said good things about English football. I know Darren Bent is a great striker and I want to play with him and work hard for the team."

  14. 2329:

Huddersfield Town have signed winger Adam Hammill on loan from Championship rivals Wolves until January. Former Liverpool trainee Hammill, 24, has played 23 games for Wolves since joining from Barnsley in January 2011. He had a loan spell with Middlesbrough last season and was made available for transfer by new Wolves boss Stale Solbakken earlier this month.

Liverpool fan Leighton Martin on Twitter: "Too easy to be despondent. Today was poor, window in general was good. Have faith!"

Graeme McCombe on Twitter: "Possibly the most understated, astute signing of the day? Hernandez to Swansea! A step up from Sinclair and sure to be a hit."

Oliver Clarke on Twitter: "As a Spurs fan I have no idea who any of our players are anymore. It'll be like a lucky dip lotto ticket at next game."

  16. 2326:

Blackburn's 23-year-old striker David Goodwillie has joined Crystal Palace on loan until January.

  17. 2325:

Carlos Bocanegra, who has left Rangers to go on loan to Racing Santander, has been talking about his move to Spain: "I really enjoy it here at Rangers, but this is mutually beneficial for both parties. I'm excited to get the opportunity to play in Spain, but I'm also excited it's only a loan because I get to come back.

"I enjoy it here, and I was lucky enough to be club captain. But that's football, these things happen. I've got to get on with it."

  18. 2324:

Yossi Benayoun, who is on the brink of returning to West Ham, tweets: "After a long and busy day I can say I had three offers from Premier League clubs. But not from Liverpool or Arsenal like some reports..."

  19. 2321:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "The ratification of Michael Essien's loan to Real Madrid - and a reunion with Jose Mourinho - has a few knock-on effects, as mentioned before. Former Chelsea midfielder Lassana Diarra is now expected to complete a move to Anzhi, though there is no real rush with the Russian transfer window not closing until Thursday night. Essien's departure also means Oriol Romeu will stay in the Premier League. Malaga's press department confirmed this a few minutes ago when presenting US defender Oguchi Onyewu as "our fourth and final signing" of the day - that deal is now confirmed.

  20. 2320:

Fulham have completed the signing of winger Ashkan Dejagah from Wolfsburg on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

  21. 2320:

Sheffield Wednesday have signed defender Martin 'Tiny' Taylor, 32, for an undisclosed fee from Watford on a two-year contract.

  22. 2316:

The transfer window shut 16 minutes ago but there is potentially £36m-worth of signings still up in the air. No word yet on Joao Moutinho's move to Tottenham or Javi Garcia's switch to Manchester City.

  23. 2314:

Manchester City's Northern Ireland defender, Ryan McGivern, has joined Hibernian on loan. The 22-year-old left-sided defender, who has 16 full caps, has joined the Scottish Premier League club until January. McGivern has made one appearance for City, as a substitute in a 5-0 league win over Sunderland in April 2011.

QPR owner Tony Fernandes tweets: "Goodnight everyone. Worn out."

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole tweets after losing 4-1 to Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup: "Well that was a lesson. Absolute joke. No fight, desire, passion, and a big reality check!"

  26. 2313:

Here's Italian football expert James Horncastle, with his round-up of the best deadline day deals in Serie A:

    1. Edinson Cavani pens new deal at Napoli until 2017 with €60m buy-out clause

    2. Nigel De Jong replaces compatriot Mark van Bommel at AC Milan

    3. Luca Toni returns to Fiorentina and is the cherry on top of a great transfer window for the Viola

    4. Alberto Gilardino joins Bologna on loan. Only two other players active in Serie A have scored more

    5. Nicklas Bendtner isn't the Top Player Juve had in mind, so Marco Borriello Part Deux at Genoa gets my nod.

  27. 2310:

Plenty of talk about this move in the last few hours, and it has just gone through. Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, 29, has joined Real Madrid on a season-long loan. Essien replaces Lassana Diarra, who is set to join FC Anzhi Makhachkala.

  28. 2308:

Quelle surprise! Joey Barton, now of Marseille, has been on Twitter: "I am now a player for L'OM. What a birthday present! Cannot wait to get going.

"Good luck to everyone at QPR for this season. Good luck Stephane Mbia at your new club. Think he'll be a great signing for the Rs."

Barton turns 30 on Sunday by the way.

  29. 2305:

Defender Dedryck Boyata, 21, has joined Dutch outfit FC Twente on a season-long loan from Premier League champions Manchester City.

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Manchester City will confirm Javi Garcia very shortly. There is still talk at Spurs about Joao Moutinho from Porto, but they are leaving that very, very late."

  31. 2304:

French football expert Matt Spiro reports: "With Stephane Mbia confirmed as a QPR player, and Hugo Lloris now at Tottenham, Ligue 1 has lost two very fine players tonight. It could have been worse for French fans, however. Lyon duo Bafetimbi Gomis and Michel Bastos now look as though they will stay put, as does Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila and Marseille striker Loic Remy.

"And of course, the French league has inherited the talents of a certain Joseph Barton. One of the Premier League's most controversial and colourful figures moving to France's most passionate and volatile footballing city...Barton and OM could well be an explosive combination!"

Lee in Hertfordshire on 81111 on text: "I think it's a good transfer window for Spurs. Modric was always going to leave, Van der Vaart a shame but good replacements. Some deadwood gone. Moutinho the icing on cake, please."

Ross on 81111 on text: "What has happened to poor old Michael Owen? Liverpool may as well take him back, as clearly they refuse to spend any money!"

Mike, a Fulham fan, on 81111 on text: "I am happy with the players that Martin Jol has bought in. But I don't understand why he hasn't replaced either Dembele, Murphy or Etuhu in the centre of midfield. C'mon Martin, one more quality signing please!"

  33. 2300:

Now it's time to find out who signed for who in the last few minutes, and whether things were completed in time.

  34. 2259:

One minute to go... still no news on Javi Garcia or Joao Moutinho. What is Portuguese for 'get a move on'?

  35. 2258:

Two minutes of the transfer window left...

Former England striker Michael Owen, who remains a free agent, tweets: "Nothing to confirm just yet, will be an interesting few days now that the transfer window is closed."

Steady on Michael, it isn't closed yet... take a leaf out of Steven Nzonzi's book if you want a new club.

  37. 2255:

... although I should add that he does not have to do it tonight.

  38. 2254:

That is going to be one quick medical for Steven Nzonzi...

    Juliette Ferrington, BBC Sport

"I'm hearing Steven Nzonzi has arrived at Stoke's training ground. His agent has been there all day."

  40. 2253:

This one has taken a while to sort out but QPR have just confirmed that 26-year-old Cameroon international defender Stephane Mbia has joined for an undisclosed fee from Marseille and signed a two-year deal to become Rangers' 12th signing of a very busy window.

Joey Barton's move in the opposite direction was reliant on the Mbia transfer going through.

  41. 2250:

BBC Sport reporter Richard Conway: "Conventional thinking would have it that with Clint Dempsey coming into Spurs the Joao Moutinho deal would be dead in the water. But we're hearing it may still be on, though it would take a record deal from Spurs. The added twist to that story is the Moutinho is with his team Porto in the Algarve ahead of a game this weekend."

  42. 2249:

French football expert Matt Spiro reports: "Joey Barton tweeted this afternoon about wanting to immerse himself in the French culture - and now he's going to get the opportunity to do that.

"The port town is a football-obsessed place and the fans will surely warm to Barton if he can rediscover his best form. It won't be easy for him, though, because OM are going through a lean time. They finished 10th last season and lost Didier Deschamps, although new coach Elie Baup is doing well: Marseille are top of the league after three matches.

"Barton will almost certainly have to wait a couple of months before making his Ligue 1 bow as the English authorities are expected to ensure his suspension (he has nine games still to serve) is respected in France. He will, however, be able to feature in the Europa League and could make his debut against Fenerbahce on 20 September."

  43. 2248:

With just over 10 minutes left until the transfer window closes, Manchester City's £16m move for Benfica's 25-year-old midfielder Javi Garcia, which looks like it will still happen, and Tottenham's £20m swoop for 25-year-old Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho, which looks less likely, are the two big deals still outstanding.

  44. 2245:

Joey Barton says 'au revoir' to Loftus Road, for now at least. The 29-year-old QPR midfielder has completed his move to French side Marseille, on a season-long loan.

Boggi on Twitter: "Do Spurs really need a new keeper? Would it have been better if they spent £15m on a replacement for Van der Vaart or Modric?"

Ed Trevor-Jones on Twitter: "Thanks to Dalglish and Damien Comolli for wasting a massive wad of cash on overrated players. The King's reputation is tarnished."

Craig Hancock on Twitter: "I'm excited at Ramirez coming to Southampton - possibly our biggest signing ever?"

  46. 2242:

Tottenham have got another one in the bag. Confirmation from BBC Sport's Mandeep Sanghera that Spurs have completed the signing of striker Clint Dempsey from Fulham. The 29-year-old United States international, who looked like he was heading for Liverpool, has moved to White Hart Lane for a fee of £6m.

European football expert Andy Brassell: "A twist to the Michael Essien move to Real Madrid, with El Mundo Deportivo reporting that it's holding up another possible Chelsea leaver....young Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu, who looked like heading off to Malaga for the season on loan despite being on the bench for the Super Cup defeat against Atletico Madrid tonight. With Madrid waiting on Essien as a Lassana Diarra replacement before letting him go to Anzhi, one wonders how this particular ball of wool will untangle....elsewhere in Spain, second tier Racing Santander have confirmed the loan signing of Rangers' Carlos Bocanegra."

  48. 2240:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "A twist to the Michael Essien move to Real Madrid, with El Mundo Deportivo reporting that it's holding up another possible Chelsea leaver... young Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu, who looked like heading off to Malaga for the season on loan despite being on the bench for the Super Cup defeat against Atletico Madrid tonight.

"With Madrid waiting on Essien as a Lassana Diarra replacement before letting him go to Anzhi, one wonders how this particualr ball of wool will untangle."

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Hearing that Steven Nzonzi to Stoke could be done before the deadline."

    Guy Mowbray, BBC Sport

Speaking on Friday's Football Focus Special: "Just think if Luis Suarez gets injured. Liverpool will have Borini and young Adam Morgan. I just cheekily wonder - Michael Owen still needs a club. Quick SOS call? Liverpool, a year ago, were paying millions and millions for players. Now they can't quite match Aston Villa."

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Seems very much like tonight was the night Brendan Rodgers picked up the tab for £100m spending under Kenny Dalglish."

  52. 2238:

Racing Santander have announced that they have signed 33-year-old defender Carlos Bocanegra on loan from Rangers.

    Robbie Savage, BBC Sport

Speaking on Friday's Football Focus Special: "It's bizarre with Clint Dempsey. When Villa bid earlier today Liverpool knew what it would take, but I think they only offered £4m. I wonder what Spurs fans will make of Dempsey? He put all his eggs in one basket - he wanted to play for Liverpool."

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey tweets: "All the best to Nathan Eccleston. I know he will do well. Top player, top man!"

  55. 2234:

Two of them, both by Blackpool, and both for players called Nathan. The Seasiders have signed 21-year-old striker Nathan Delfouneso on a season-long loan from Aston Villa and 21-year-old frontman Nathan Eccleston on a permanent deal from Liverpool.

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Fulham had also hoped to bring in Wilson Palacios from Stoke City but may not get done in time now."

  57. 2231:

There is just half-an-hour of the transfer window to go so why not go out in style by watching a Football Focus Special, which has just started on the BBC News Channel, red button and this website? Dan Walker is joined by Robbie Savage, Guy Mowbray and Martin Keown.

  58. 2224:

Now, I did say there was no news on Joey Barton's move to Marseille... that's changed now, though.

French football expert Matt Spiro tells us that French radio station RMC are reporting that Joey Barton has completed a loan switch to Marseille after Stephane Mbia sealed his move the other way, signing for Queens Park Rangers for just under £5m.

  59. 2222:

Brighton have signed David Lopez from Athletic Bilbao. The 29-year-old right-sided midfielder has signed a one-year deal at the Amex.

BBC Sport reporter Ben Smith on Twitter: "Was told at 9pm it was likely there'd now be no ins at Anfield. Nothing to suggest has changed. Fans not happy."

David Pleat, BBC Radio 5 live

"The price for Hugo Lloris was much more four or five months ago. That is a great deal for Tottenham, a clever move."

  62. 2221:

Right then, where are we at? There are 39 minutes left before the transfer window shuts and two of the deals yet to be wrapped up are Fulham striker Clint Dempsey's move to Tottenham and Manchester City's capture of Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia. No news on whether Joao Moutinho is going to White Hart Lane, though. It has all gone a bit quiet on Joey Barton to Marseille too.

Edward Barton on Twitter: "Why are so many Reds bothered about missing out on Dempsey? Not what we need, no better than the current players."

Steven Broadbent on Twitter: "Are Southampton mad? Why would they send Billy Sharp (a proven goalscorer) out to Nottingham Forest?"

Dean Pannell on Twitter: "£8m for Lloris is a steal! Let's just hope Levy puts his hand in his pocket and sorts out Moutinho too."

  64. 2216:

Aston Villa have completed the signing of 21-year-old Belgium striker Christian Benteke from Genk.

  65. 2212:

French football expert Matt Spiro reports: "Fabien Barthez aside, French goalkeepers have rarely enjoyed success in England. But those who have watched Hugo Lloris consistently excelling for France and Lyon have no doubt he will be a big hit at Tottenham.

"A quiet character off the pitch, the former OGC Nice goalkeeper is unflappable and extremely assured on it. Lloris is brilliant on his line but also quick to advance for crosses and is not afraid to come out to play the 'sweeper' role - a quality Andre Villas Boas appreciates.

"The one question mark surrounds his size. Although tall at 6ft 2in, he has a slender build and some feel that might hinder him in the fast and physical Premier League. Chelsea's goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon expressed concerns last year, saying: 'The Premier League is different to the Champions League and other leagues. Lloris is too small for English football.'

"Lloris' talent is not in question, however, and like most people in France, I believe Spurs have just pulled off one of the coups of the summer."

  66. 2211:

Getafe striker Nicolas Fedor, 27, has joined Celtic on loan for the rest of the season, the Spanish club have confirmed on their official website.

  67. 2206:

Brighton have agreed to sign Swansea striker Stephen Dobbie for an undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old has signed a three-year deal.

  68. 2205:

He was tweeting about it earlier and I can confirm that Southampton striker Billy Sharp, 26, has joined Championship side Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of the season.

  69. 2203:

BBC Sport's David Ornstein has some news that might make some of you happy Hammers. West Ham have agreed a deal to sign Israel midfielder Yossi Benayoun on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Paperwork still needs to be completed before deadline for move to go through. Benayoun, 32, played at Upton Park between 2005 and 2007.

From Sam, a Liverpool fan, on 81111 on text: "Fabio Borini appears to hate scoring, Joe Allen is a glorified Charlie Adam. The best we can hope for is a safe mid table finish this year. Awful transfer policy."

James from North Wales on 81111 on text: "I am an extremely annoyed Liverpool fan because of missing out on Dempsey, especially as he seemed so keen to be at Anfield. Last resort option could be an Owen return and if not then give Pacheco a chance!"

Stuart in Norfolk on 81111 on text: "Strong rumours abound that Liverpool are about to solve their goalscoring problems by signing a beachball! Come on, do something!"

  71. 2200:

So, Hugo Lloris has joined Tottenham and it looks like Clint Dempsey is on his way too, but we await news on Joao Moutinho. Less than 60 minutes left to tie those deals up.

  72. 2159:

Tottenham could be in for a busy time of things in the next hour or so but they have just got one new signing in the bag. Lyon have confirmed they have sold 25-year-old France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to Spurs for an initial £8m. Lloris has signed a four-year-deal.

  73. 2156:

Look away now, Liverpool fans. Clint Dempsey is undergoing a medical at Spurs Lodge.

  74. 2156:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "There's always one late surprise in the window, and it appears to be building in Spain, where both As and Marca say that Real Madrid are negotiating a move for Chelsea's Michael Essien. He would be the replacement for Lassana Diarra who - as BBC Sport's Matt Spiro reported before - is closing on a move to moneybags Anzhi Makhachkala. So it's not ok for Essien to move to a domestic rival, but it's fine for for him to go to a side that are desperate to take the Champions League from you?"

  75. 2155:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "In the last few minutes, Resanenca has claimed that Joao Moutinho will stay at Porto. Tottenham's offer is still below Porto's valuation, it says, and the midfielder is still not happy with the personal terms on offer. That said, there's still 76 minutes to deadline while writing this, so still there's time for it to be on - and off - again...."

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Christian Benteke is set to be announced as an Aston Villa player shortly on a four-year deal."

  77. 2154:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "While Javi Garcia undergoes his medical ahead of his prospective move to Manchester City, there's some consternation back in Portugal about the amount that Benfica will receive. Although initial reports claimed City would pay £20m, the general consensus now agrees with the English media estimate of £16m plus bonuses. So when Garcia's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon said "you just can't say no to some offers" this afternoon, he was perhaps referring to the salary proposed to his client rather than the fee offered to the club. It's below the rate by Benfica's hardball standards.

Nevertheless, coach Jorge Jesus won't be letting the cash burn a hole in his pocket, it seems. Record claims that Benfica have finally clinched a deal for Braga forward Lima, despite the northern club's president Antonio Salvador claiming this morning they would aim to keep their player "at any cost". The 29-year-old Brazilian scored 26 goals in all competitions last season, and would be a big loss for a major domestic competitor."

  78. 2153:

There is still 67 minutes left of this transfer window to go but West Brom have tweeted that their business is over for the day: "That's all for this transfer window folks. Six new faces and some great business done. Come on you Baggies!"

Nottingham Forest's new on loan striker Billy Sharp tweets: "Right then, I'm really sorry Saints fans - I'm off to Forest for the season. You've been amazing to me, love you all. Massive thanks and gutted to be leaving.

"But at the same time I'm wanted by a massive club in Forest so I'm buzzing for that chance. Can't wait to get going, hope to build."

  80. 2149:

Don't know much about Aston Villa's new signing, 22-year-old midfielder Ashley Westwood, who has just joined from Crewe? Here is the man himself to tell you.

Westwood said: "I see myself as a Michael Carrick-type of player, someone who stays out of the limelight and keeps it simple, retaining the ball and laying it off to team-mates.

"From the conversations I've had with the new manager (Paul Lambert) I think that I will fit in perfectly here. He said to me that he's looking for younger lads to work with him, step up and lift this club to the next level and I'm really looking forward to the challenge."

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Michael Essien may be going to Real Madrid on loan. He will be dealing with a manager there who knows his very well and who will feel he can get the most out of him."

  82. 2142:

The deals are dropping thick and fast now. West Brom have sealed a deal for Dynamo Kiev's Macedonia international left-back Goran Popov. The 27-year-old joins on season-long loan with a view to permanent deal.

  83. 2141:

Everton have signed Kilmarnock's 17-year-old winger Matthew Kennedy for a nominal fee on a three-year deal.

  84. 2138:

Manchester City have signed 19-year-old Fiorentina centre-back Matija Nastasic in a deal worth £10m, with Stefan Savic going the other way.

Tauseef Hussain on Twitter: "Being an Arsenal fan during the transfer window is like being in detention and watching everyone else go out and play."

Thomas Kingwell on Twitter: "Borini and Suarez are not more than 10 goal men really. Where are the goals coming from? Same story as last season."

Devin Johnson on Twitter: "Liverpool should've closed the Dempsey deal weeks ago. Go Spurs!"

  86. 2136:
    FULL-TIME- Chelsea 1-4 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid win the European Super Cup, and in style too, thanks to Radamel Falcao's hat-trick.

  87. 2134:

Almost another Atletico goal in Monaco, where Chelsea have given up trying to defend and instead go close to putting the ball in their own net. David Luiz is the guilty party - he intercepts a cross but only succeeds in hitting the post with Petr Cech beaten.

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"The reaction of Liverpool fans on Twitter to Dempsey perhaps going to Tottenham has been very angry. They now see the prospect of not bringing in anybody today. Why have they not got anybody? They've let Andy Carroll go, Charlie Adam's gone, they've got money in the bank. Yet no-one seems to be coming."

  89. 2131:

It's been a quiet night but, around the country, things are finally starting to happen. BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan reports that midfielder Ashley Westwood has joined Aston Villa from Crewe on a four-year deal, for a fee believed to be about £2m.

  90. 2129:

I told you earlier that Tottenham were sniffing around Clint Dempsey, and here is confirmation from BBC Sport reporter Ben Smith: "Clint Dempsey is at Spurs Lodge, the training ground. There is a very strong chance he will be a Tottenham player come 11 o'clock. The fee has been agreed between the clubs and he is set to undergo a very quick medical."

  91. 2126:

Southampton have confirmed that 19-year-old United States U20 goalkeeper Cody Cropper has signed a permanent deal. Cropper has been training with the Saints' under-21 squad.

  92. 2125:

Italian football expert James Horncastle: "The window is closed in Italy but the espresso machine is still on. So, in anticipation of an official announcement confirming his move from Fiorentina to Manchester City, it might be worth discussing what can be expected of Matija Nastasic.

"The 19-year-old centre-back was a revelation in Serie A last season. Thrown in at the deep end, his first start came against the then champions AC Milan. Did Nastasic let the occasion get to him? Not in the slightest. He marked Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the league's top scorer and best player, out of the game in a 0-0 draw. From that day on, he was one of the first names on Fiorentina's team-sheet and earned a call-up to the Serbia squad. Hailed as 'the new Nemanja Vidic', his response to that was simply: "I wish…""

    Jonathan Pearce, BBC Sport

"Chelsea awful. Defence shambolic. Midfield not tracking back. Poor poor poor. Waste of time this game."

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"I understand that Everton have had a look at Michael Essien but at this stage his wages are still prohibitive. That would still be an expensive deal so at this stage, with an hour and a half to go, that's not happening."

Stuart in Folkestone on 81111 on text: "Why won't Fergie buy a midfielder? We need a battling player to break up play and win us the ball. Carrick ain't that man. Why Fergie? Why?"

Mark in Kent in 81111 on text: "I am a very disillusioned Spurs fan. AVB is dismantling a top four squad and replacing them with nobody. Levy may regret sacking Redknapp at this rate."

Jon T on 81111 on text: "Andy Carroll's loan deal to West Ham is looking like incredibly bad business if we don't get any strikers in."

  96. 2117:
Chelsea 1-4 Atletico Madrid - Gary Cahill (75 mins)

Chelsea have got a goal back and it's a real striker's finish from their defender Gary Cahill. The ball drops kindly for him from a corner and he reacts quickly to prod home from near the penalty spot. Good finishing but the Blues need something really special to salvage this game now.

BBC Sport reporter Darren Fletcher tweets: "Billy Sharp - excellent signing for Forest. His partnership with Simon Cox makes them contenders."

Tottenham's former winger Rafael van der Vaart tweets: "It's official, I am back in Germany! Looking forward to great years with HSV!

"Of course I am sad to leave Spurs and especially all the fans which have been nothing but great!

"Thanks to the best fans in England for an amazing time! All your tweets and messages really mean a lot to me!"

French football expert Matt Spiro: "Reassuring reports are coming through regarding Stephane Mbia's medical at Queens Park Rangers. This could prove one of today's best pieces of business. Mbia is an immensely powerful, athletic player who can operate as a centre-back or a defensive midfielder. The 26-year-old has been one of the best defensive players in Ligue 1 for several years. Provided he stays fit, Mbia could become a real force in the Premier League."

Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz Al Hasawi on Twitter: "I'm honoured to announce that striker Billy Sharp is to spend the rest of the season on loan with us from Southampton. Come on you Reds.

  101. 2113:

BBC Sport's reporter Ben Smith tweets: "Nathan Ecclestone is on his way to Blackpool this evening. Danny Pacheco also on his way out of Liverpool back to Spain."

  102. 2112:

So less than two hours of the transfer window to go. It's quiet at the moment, but it won't stay that way... surely? So, are you happy with what your team has got, or frustrated by who they have not? Tweet us using the hashtag #bbcfootball or text in on 81111 (UK). Make sure you put your name on those texts though.

Arsenal's Ghanaian midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong tweets: "If Michael Essien did ever come to Arsenal I would be the happiest man in the world. My role model. Love him."

  104. 2107:
David Pleat, BBC Radio 5 live

Speaking about the Clint Dempsey situation, with Liverpool refusing to meet the Cottagers' asking price: "This is where the Fulham board has to be stubborn and brave and hold out. Dempsey will want to play football. Last year Luka Modric wanted to go but he didn't. He got back playing and had a good season with Tottenham."

  105. 2103:
Chelsea 0-4 Atletico Madrid - Miranda (60 mins)

Forget Radamel Falcao, it looks to me like Chelsea need a new defence. The Blues are still all over the place at the back and, from a whipped free-kick, Mario Suarez tees up Miranda to turn the ball home from close range. Super stuff from Atletico - and the Super Cup is all but theirs.

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer

"Everton still pursuing another incoming - not sure it will be Michael Essien on loan at this stage though. Would still be an expensive deal."

  107. 2100:

And there is an awful lot of business still to be done. No news from Tottenham on Joao Moutinho or Hugo Lloris, nothing more from Manchester City on Javi Garcia or Matija Nastasic and even less from Liverpool on Daniel Sturridge (who is on the bench for Chelsea for the Super Cup final), while the Reds appear to have given up on Clint Dempsey. We shall see... Spurs are also sniffing around Dempsey, remember.

  108. 2053:

Lots of you seem to think Radamel Falcao would fit in nicely at your club. I can't think why? But the bad news, for most of you, is that the 26-year-old Colombian has got a whopping £50m buy-out clause in his contract at Atletico Madrid. Any takers?

Eliott Bishop on Twitter: "Liverpool are in huge trouble unless something spectacular happens before 11pm, no goalscorers in the squad."

Andy Oram on Twitter: "We don't need Dempsey! Decent season last year but too old and not likely to do it again."

John Tallentire on Twitter: "If Liverpool fail with any signings tonight, let's have Owen back tomorrow on pay as you play."

  110. 2045:

Everton are also in talks with Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland and it appears Toffees boss David Moyes is a busy man tonight. BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan reports that Stoke and Everton are still in talks with Blackburn's Steven Nzonzi.

"From the Potters' point of view, Stoke's Wilson Palacios is on verge of season-long loan at Olympiakos so could make room for Nzonzi at the Britannia Stadium. I'm told Stoke have not been in contact with Michael Owen today. Originally, the club wanted a structured deal, but Owen's camp were "talking telephone numbers"."

  111. 2039:

French football expert Matt Spiro reports: "Anzhi Makhachkala are holding talks with Real Madrid over the possible transfer of Lassana Diarra, according to the Spanish daily AS. The France midfielder started just 15 league matches for the Spanish champions last season and it's understood that Jose Mourinho may be ready to cash in on the 27-year-old former Chelsea, Arsenal and Portsmouth player, who has just one year left on his contract."

Tottenham fan Dave from Essex, via text: "Errr Mr Levy, I know you're busy with all these transfer shenanigans but can I have Falcao please? Thanks in advance."

  113. 2038:

By the looks of things, Clint Dempsey will not have to worry about it this weekend but, all over the country, there are an awful lot of footballers who have been getting to know their new team-mates. As is custom at a lot of clubs, Sunderland's new signings have introduced themselves by singing a song for their team-mates.

Black Cats defender Titus Bramble has tweeted about their performance, and he wasn't wholly impressed: "Finally the new boys have sung their songs. Louis Saha and Adam Johnson were pretty good but not sure about Steven Fletcher and Danny Rose though..."

  114. 2034:

Back to deadline day matters now, but not to the news that Liverpool fans wanted to hear. BBC Sport's Ben Smith says Clint Dempsey's proposed move to Liverpool is on the brink of a collapse. "Sides too far apart. May not be any ins at Anfield tonight."

  115. 2033:
    HALF-TIME- Chelsea 0-3 Atletico Madrid
  116. 2030:
Chelsea 0-3 Atletico Madrid - Radamel Falcao hat-trick (45 mins)

Er, can somebody tell Radamel Falcao that tonight is meant to be about transfers, not all about him? The Colombian tears Chelsea's defence apart again, running on to Arda Turan's pass, leaving Ramires in his wake and slotting home low past Petr Cech. It's not even half-time yet and Atletico are out of sight.

Rafael van der Vaart, who left Tottenham for Hamburg, tweets: "Of course I am sad to leave Spurs and especially all the fans who have been nothing but great!!"

Everton captain Phil Neville tweets: "Welcome Bryan Oviedo. Watched him play last week looks top drawer to me and he has the second best stepover in the club!!!"

  119. 2021:

Atletico should be 3-0 up against Chelsea. There was a definite hint of offside as Adrian Lopez just missed an open goal from about six yards out, but at least he did it in style, hitting himself in the face with the ball when it was easier to score. Who else but Radamel Falcao followed up, heading the loose ball against the post.

  120. 2020:

There seems to be plenty of promising Polish keepers about at the moment, and Blackburn have just signed one of them. Grzegorz Sandomierski, 22, has joined on a season-long loan from Genk.

  121. 2016:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "Just when you thought QPR had signed everyone in sight, Resanenca reports that Portugal international centre-back Rolando has rejected a move from Porto to the Super Hoops. The report says that the defender simply "wasn't interested in the sporting project", though the figures quoted (an annual salary around the £1.5m mark) suggests he thinks he can get a better offer elsewhere. Turkish champions Galatasaray are also keen.

"After inking his loan move from Arsenal, Park Chu-Young told his presentation press conference at Celta Vigo this afternoon that his goals target for the season is "more than 15". Park also said that "Spanish football is more technical than English football", and thus he will hopefully fit in better. I hope so too. He'll wear the number 18 for Celta.

"A snippet of feelgood news for you too - Portuguese forward Yannick Djalo has completed a loan move from Benfica to Toulouse after having the transfer deadline day from hell this time last year (see update at 1240). Thank goodness."

  122. 2015:

French football expert Matt Spiro with the latest from Ligue 1: "There has been an awful lot of talk in France, but not a whole lot of action yet. We are still waiting for confirmation of Stephane Mbia's switch from Marseille to Queens Park Rangers. The Cameroonian, who has had injury problems in the last year, is in London for a medical. Joey Barton will be one man hoping the tests go smoothly: the former Newcastle midfielder can only complete his loan move, it seems, once Mbia has joined Mark Hughes' team.

"Unlike Hugo Lloris, Michel Bastos has been named in Lyon's squad for tomorrow's match against Valenciennes. The Brazilian's mooted transfer to Fulham looks to have stalled after OL sports director Bernard Lacombe claimed the winger Is not interested in the move.

"Although Jean-Michel Aulas has said Lloris could yet be whisked back to play in Saturday's league game should talks with Tottenham collapse, that appears to be little more than brinkmanship from the Lyon president. As far as the French media is concerned, the Lloris deal is all but done. The only other major transfer close to completion is Paris Saint-Germain's £4.5m swoop for Dutch international defender Gregory van der Wiel."

  123. 2013:

Over to north London now. Tottenham? Arsenal? No. Barnet. The Bees have signed Wales Under-21 international defender David Stephens on a free transfer. The 20-year-old started his career at Norwich and was playing in Scotland for Hibs last season.

Sukhraj Hayer on Twitter: "Expect to see Falcao come out in a Chelsea shirt at half time in the world's quickest deadline day transfer"

Gordon Baisley on Twitter: "You know you've been saying deal of the day still to come? Someone sign Falcao! He's single handedly taking Chelsea apart."

Lewis Burn on Twitter: "Err, can Chelsea get a deadline day deal done for Falcao?! He's tearing us apart right now!"

  125. 2012:

Staying on Merseyside, BBC Sport's David Ornstein has got some news for Liverpool fans about a player who is, er, staying on Merseyside: "Joe Cole will be staying at Liverpool to fight for his place. There were various enquiries but no offers or realistic deals presented."

  126. 2008:

We heard about this one a bit earlier on but it has now been confirmed - Everton have tweeted that they have completed the signing of FC Copenhagen left-back Bryan Oviedo on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

  127. 2007:

New Fulham forward Dimitar Berbatov has been talking about life at Craven Cottage: "I will fit in pretty quickly, I think." And his new manager Martin Jol too: "Sometimes in life when you meet someone you know straightaway you will work well with them. Let's hope this will happen again. I am a football player so I need to do whatever the manager wants from me. But I like playing football, so hopefully the manager will like me."

  128. 2004:
Chelsea 0-2 Atletico Madrid - Radamel Falcao (19 mins)

Er, at this rate clubs will be queuing up to sign Radamel Falcao at half-time. This time he picks up the ball on the right-hand side of the box, cuts inside and curls a peach of a shot past Petr Cech into the opposite corner of the net.

  129. 2000:

And still we wait on news of Clint Dempsey, Joao Moutinho and Javi Garcia, to name but three. Come on guys, what are you waiting for?

  130. 1959:
    BBC Radio 5 live

Forget actual football, I'm sure you'll agree that it's all about the transfers tonight (apologies to Chelsea fans). Anyway, here's BBC Sport reporter Pat Murphy with some news from the midlands: "Shrewsbury in for Emile Heskey? Well, that is near where he lives in the Midlands. I always thought he'd end up back at Leicester...

"As for Christian Benteke, the striker, I'm hearing from Villa that they are working hard at it and are trying to get it over the line. It is still very much alive. I'm also hearing that he's en route if not there in the west Midlands already."

  131. 1953:
GOAL- Chelsea 0-1 Atletico Madrid - Radamel Falcao (7 mins)

No mistake by Radamel Falcao this time, though. He runs on to a delicious chipped ball and coolly chips the ball over the onrushing Petr Cech. A great pass and a finish to match.

  132. 1952:

Leicester City defender Cian Bolger has returned to Bristol Rovers on loan until January. The 20-year-old has previously had two stints at the Memorial Stadium and has made a total of 48 appearances for the League Two side.

  133. 1951:

Chelsea are doing a lot of defending in the opening moments against Atletico, and the Spanish side have just hit the woodwork. Radamel Falcao was inches away from rounding off a slick passing move when he slid ahead of Ashley Cole but saw his shot come back off the underside of the crossbar.

  134. 1949:

Stoke City have just tweeted with a bit of team news for the weekend: "Maurice Edu and Charlie Adam are both cleared to be able to play at Wigan Athletic tomorrow. Edu has squad number 13, Adam has 16."

  135. 1946:
    KICK-OFF- European Super Cup

Chelsea have just kicked off their European Super Cup clash with Atletico Madrid. Fair to say the Stade Louis II in Monaco is not exactly a sell-out.

  136. 1943:

Italian football expert James Horncastle: "Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is a movie producer. He has a penchant for showmanship. Remember how he unveiled new signing Gokhan Inler last summer in a lion's mask? Well, tonight he might have gone one better.

"At the beginning of a press conference called to reveal the future of star striker Edinson Cavani, he opened with a sombre look on his face. "At times marriages come to an end," he said. "Unfortunately Edi wants to go to England, to that cold city of Manchester, and there's a plane ready to take him there." Cavani is sitting next to him in a fit of the giggles and has to interrupt the charade. "What plane!," he said. "I am staying at Napoli." Delighted, De Laurentiis then turns to him and says: "Well sign then! Bring me the contract." Cavani goes on to put pen to paper in front of the cameras then they hold up his No.7 shirt with 2017 written on the back.

"Wonderful stuff. Ingenious. Any club interested in Cavani will now have to pay the buy-out clause included in his new contract, which is said to be around €60m. Napoli deserve credit. Tying now Cavani, a player widely considered to be one of the best strikers in the world, is maybe the best piece of business done by an Italian club on deadline day."

  137. 1940:

I get the feeling Southampton manager Nigel Adkins is pretty pleased with his capture of Gaston Ramirez from Bolgona today.

"A lot of hard work has gone on, with a lot of negotiations behind the scenes to get this deal done," Adkins said. "Great credit to everyone because we have a young, exciting talent joining us who is one of the best around. We have got one of the most exciting prospects in world football coming to St Mary's."

High praise indeed. I haven't heard so much hype about a Saints signing since former wine waiter turned winger Frankie Bennett arrived at the Dell from Halesowen Town in the early 90s.

David Pleat, BBC Radio 5 live

"There is so much player power these days, because the salaries are so much. In days of old a player might contact a journalist who would in turn drive up some interest. Now an agent and a player work it between them and by the time the clubs come to agree a transfer fee a player has already agreed terms. That's completely the opposite of the past, where you would not allow a player to talk to another team."

Matt Bubb on Twitter: "So I'm looking at the table and looking at the signings we have made and I can't see Villa moving from the bottom."

Doug Dawson on Twitter: "That's right Mr Ashley, you just keep that Newcastle squad locked up for another three hours and 32 minutes please!"

Tom Bradstreet on Twitter: "Big midfield signing must be on the cards at Tottenham - Van der Vaart would have stayed, otherwise."

  140. 1932:

European football expert Andy Brassell reports that, as expected, Roque Santa Cruz's move from Manchester City to Malaga on a one-season loan deal has been completed. Coach Manuel Pellegrini will decide tomorrow if he's to be involved in the La Liga match at Zaragoza.

  141. 1930:

Celtic have signed Nigeria defender Efe Ambrose on a three-year deal from FC Ashdod, the SPL champions have confirmed.

You can check out more transfer news from Scotland with the BBC's dedicated deadline day coverage.

  142. 1927:

European football expert Andy Brassell: "After talk earlier of Celtic's interest in Braga's Helder Barbosa, it appears another player might be en route from Iberia to Glasgow. Estadio Deportivo claim that Getafe's Venezuelan forward Miku is set to join Neil Lennon's men. That would be a very tidy piece of business.

"Meanwhile it looks like we might have a second mover from the Premier League to Galicia today - after Arsenal's Park Chu-Young's arrived at Celta Vigo on loan, reports indicate that Ivan Klasnic is set to join Deportivo La Coruna after leaving Bolton. The 32-year-old Croatia striker arrived in north-west Spain for talks earlier and Marca believe a deal is already agreed. The Portuguese colony at Deportivo continues to form too with left-back Tiago Pinto - the son of noted midfield genius/hothead Joao Vieira Pinto - signing a two-year deal at the Riazor."

  144. 1926:

French football expert Matt Spiro reports "Even though it was widely expected, Hugo Lloris' imminent switch to Tottenham is not going down well in France. Several Lyon players have expressed their disappointment at the goalkeeper's decision to leave the Stade de Gerland after four seasons, with defender Dejan Lovren offering a short, solemn tweet that simply read, 'I am sad'. Playmaker Clement Grenier echoed that sentiment, saying: 'We're certainly going to miss him. He's a good man and one of the best goalkeepers in the world. For him, Tottenham may be a stepping stone to one of Europe's biggest clubs.'

"Many are surprised that the France captain, aged 25, is being allowed to leave OL for a fee of around £9m plus performance-related bonuses. For ex-France international Jean-Michel Larque, Lloris earns Lyon "five or six extra points every season. Now Tottenham will get those extra points." Lloris began his medical at Spurs lodge at around 17:00 and is expected to sign a contract with the North London club shortly."

  145. 1921:

Joao Moutinho is one of the big 'uns we are waiting on tonight... along with Clint Dempsey to Liverpool/Spurs and Javi Garcia to Manchester City. In terms of moves that have already happened, I urge you to check out the full list on the BBC website. From Charlie Adam to Rafael van der Vaart, they are all there in alphabetic order...

    Mark Lawrenson, BBC Sport

On today's deadline-day deals: "Joao Moutinho to Tottenham will be done - that won't fall through. As for Rafael van der Vaart, I don't think he ever really finished a game for Spurs, did he? When he first came he was brilliant, but then he kept suffering from hamstring problems. I think Tottenham have got good money for him."

  147. 1916:
    Chelsea v Atletico Madrid

Chelsea are captained by midfielder Frank Lampard because centre-back John Terry - as he was for the Champions League final - is suspended. Lampard and Ramires come into the side as two changes from the side which beat Newcastle, with Raul Meireles and Ryan Bertrand dropping to the bench, where new signing Victor Moses will also start the game.

There is no Michael Essien for the Blues, fuelling speculation he could be on his way to Arsenal tonight.

Atletico Madrid have striker Radamel Falcao in their side along with the dangerous Adrian Lopez.

James Hunter on Twitter: "Essien not in the Chelsea squad tonight, and Arsenal have been eerily quiet today. A move on the cards methinks..."

Alasdair Warwicker on Twitter: "Berbatov to Fulham will be the signing of the day. Getting a class player for not a lot of money."

Angel Gabriel on Twitter: "How did Southampton get Gaston Ramirez. This guy is pure quality. He would be a star in any of the top four teams. Good buy."

  149. 1913:
    LINE-UPS- Chelsea v Atletico Madrid

There's a game going on tonight, too. It's only the European Super Cup between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, in Monaco. It starts at 1945 BST and here are the teams:

Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Cole, Mikel, Lampard, Ramires, Hazard, Mata, Torres. Subs: Turnbull, Romeu, Oscar, Moses, Meireles, Sturridge, Bertrand.

Atletico Madrid: Courtois, Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Filipe Luis, Mario Suarez, Gabi, Adrian, Koke, Turan, Falcao. Subs: Sergio Asenjo, Raul Garcia, Rodriguez, Silvio, Cata Diaz, Diego Costa, Emre.

    Referee: Damir Skomina (Slovenia)

  150. 1911:

Hmmm, seems there is lots happening on Merseyside at the moment. Here's BBC Sport's Ben Smith with more on the Clint Dempsey situation: "Liverpool have made a bid for Dempsey, but below Fulham's valuation. Talks continue. Still a way to go."

  151. 1909:

For news of what you might have missed in terms of transfers (and talk) this afternoon, can I point you in this direction of our earlier live text commentary?

And here's an interesting transfer tale to kick us off this evening. BBC Sport's Graham Chase reports that Everton are in talks to sign Birmingham's England international goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The 19-year-old has been Tottenham's back-up option to Hugo Lloris and has also been a target for Southampton, Liverpool and Manchester City this summer but Everton are now closing on a deal.

  152. 1907:

Evening all. There are just 233 minutes of this transfer window left to go - and I'm pretty confident we will see around the same number of truly jaw-dropping deals go through before deadline day is done. OK, OK, let's be honest, just one would be nice...
