But that's all from me for the night.
Head back this way on Sunday, when Phil Dawkes is your man for extensive coverage of the games between Stoke and Arsenal, and Liverpool and Manchester City.*
*Biblical weather permitting
-
1943:
So then, a very eventful day of football. We've seen some monumental weather, a game called off before the end of August for a waterlogged pitch, an inch-long gash in Wayne Rooney's thigh, a first Manchester United goal for a former Arsenal captain and another good win for Everton.
If you need a catch up, head over to our football index where you can read the match reports and quotes and even watch the interviews with the great and good from the Premier League.

Hazard seems to be worth all the fuss so far?"

Alan Pardew blows a kiss to the travelling Newcastle support but Chelsea were always in control of that one. They looked vulnerable against Reading but put in a composed performance, with Eden Hazard impressing again.

David Luiz is fine now, he's back on the pitch. The rain has returned in a big way.

1923:
David Luiz needs treatment after a nasty clash of heads in the Chelsea area. The defender wins a terrific header but is clattered by the head of Demba Ba momentarily afterwards. He is handed a big bandage and jogs round to the side of the pitch.

1917:
Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi had a trouble-free afternoon as he helped the Latics to a 2-0 win at Premier League newcomers Southampton. He has taken to Twitter to give his thoughts: "Great win today. Crucial three points away against a team that was eager to play the first home game in the Premier League since a long time.
"Very satisfied with the performance and the score. All the team concentrated throughout the 90 minutes. Happy with the first clean sheet away."
-
1917:
Oh big chance for Newcastle!
Sylvain Marveaux crosses from the left, Ryan Taylor heads it back into the middle and Demba Ba misses the ball altogether with a real air shot.
He still has time to have a second bite of the cherry, mind, and his low drive is well saved by the diving Petr Cech. They have had a couple of chances which really should have been taken today.
-
1914:FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST
It's all over at Vicarage Road, where Watford have sewn up a 2-0 win over Birmingham.
-
1910:
More scintillating stuff from Eden Hazard as he flies past Fabricio Coloccini with ease before putting in a low cross. Newcastle get the ball away but only as far as Ryan Bertrand, who shoots low and hard from range and Tim Krul has to make the save. As close as we've come to a goal all half.
-
1910:
Everton defender Sylvain Distin is trying to keep his feet on the ground after David Moyes's side picked up their second successive win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Aston Villa.

-
1901:FOOTBALL LEAGUE UPDATE
There are 15 minutes remaining at Vicarage Road and Watford still lead Birmingham 2-0. However the Hornets have sat back this half and Birmingham have had the better of the play, albeit without truly threatening Manuel Almunia in the Watford goal.
-
1859:
Newcastle have made a change as well, with dead-ball expert Ryan Taylor coming on, and he delivers a beauty from deep on the left which Papiss Cisse heads over the top. He should do better there, the number nine. A decent opening.
-
1857:
A third goal is on the cards but I wouldn't like to say which way it is going to go. Both teams look a threat on the break, as Chelsea chuck Ramires on for Juan Mata.
-
1852:
Fernando Torres is starting to look more and more like his old self. He bursts forward on the break, with Vurnon Anita matching him stride for stride, and pulls out a 'rabona' to cross it in with his left foot. Newcastle get it clear but the confidence is coursing through Torres now.
-
1850:
Petr Cech has to make a strong save, Demba Ba drives into the area and shoots left-footed, but Cech stands up at his near post to beat the ball away. If Newcastle can get one here then you never know...
-
1849:
Chelsea have been a touch sloppy in this half but in a second thay are almost through. Believe it or not but the move begins with John Obi Mikel spinning away from a man in midfield and eating up the ground.
Fernando Torres makes a dangerous run off the back of a defender but Mikel slightly delays in playing the pass and Fabricio Coloccini is able to cut it out.
-
1844:

1825:
Chelsea have been very good so far.
It is two years since Newcastle came from behind to win a Premier League match - a 2-1 victory at West Ham in October 2010.
-
1822:
Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by West Brom earlier this afternoon and Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is keen to make a further dent in his transfer coffers before the end of the window.
He said: "The market can be very frenetic in the last couple of days. We are looking to strengthen our squad a bit further so we will try to do the deals we can do."
-
1820:HALF-TIME- Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle
MOTD's Jonathan Pearce at Stamford Bridge: "Chelsea are publicly saying they won't challenge for the title, but not on this form. Newcastle aren't out of it, but Chelsea look very, very good going forward."
-
1820:
That is another assist for Eden Hazard. He is making a massive impact on the Premier League.
-
1817:GOAL- Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle - Fernando Torres (45 mins)
This might be the best goal I've seen Fernando Torres score in a few years. Torres plays the ball into the feet of Eden Hazard, the Belgian holds off his marker and back-heels the ball back into Torres's path, and he is able to drive the ball away from the dive of Tim Krul and into the top corner. Wonderful stuff.
-
1815:FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST
It's Watford 2-0 Birmingham at half-time thanks to two of the Hornets' loan signings from Udinese - Almen Abdi and Matej Vydra. New Watford manager Gianfranco Zola has said he wants his side to play a passing game and his side seem to be listening, having cut through the Birmingham defence on numerous occasions.
-
1813:
Oh, ridiculous from David Luiz!
The centre-half - that's a defender, Dave - does well initially to win a header but then tries to dribble past Danny Simpson on the edge of his own box. Simpson gets the tackle in, the ball runs on to Papiss Cisse and he is able to fire in a shot which is saved by Petr Cech. Crazy from the Brazilian.
-
1813:YELLOW CARD- Fernando Torres
Torres hits the deck as he dives over a tackle and is booked for a dive - harsh that one. There appeared to be some contact...
-
1811:
Newcastle go close now. Hatem Ben Arfa is the architect - his acceleration over a few yards is incredible - and he bursts clear of a man before finding Papiss Cisse on the right of the area. Cisse then stands up a cross to the back post but Demba Ba can't keep it down.
-

Matt Holford on Twitter: "Chelsea are demonstrating why they are going to be real title contenders this season, Eden Hazard completes the Chelsea package."
Tom Duncan on Twitter: "Chelsea spent the whole summer wondering what we had lost without Drogba, but we've gained a whole lot more with Hazard!"
Mick Gaskin on Twitter: "Eden Hazard already has Player of the Year sewn up."
-
1804:
Chelsea turn it on again and almost make it 2-0.
Again, Eden Hazard is at the heart of it as he carries the ball menacingly forwards. He is over-lapped by Juan Mata and delays his pass to perfection and plays the Spaniard in. Mata puts the ball across the face of goal but Fabricio Coloccini is on hand to smash it away before Fernando Torres can get there.
-
1802:
Newcastle of course were playing in Greece this time on Thursday - the toughest 48 hours since Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy were on the run through California.
They are having a strong spell of possession here though.
-
1757:
Apologies if some of you have experienced problems with our live football scores and league tables. We're having a few technical issues with our data feeds but they'll hopefully be fixed soon.
-
1757:
Manchester United's Robin van Persie, who scored on his home debut as United beat Fulham 3-2: "It is always good on your debut to score a goal like that. I enjoyed it. Fulham are a good side, they like to play football and it is always hard against them. In the end we got the three points and that is the main thing. Old Trafford is a big stadium, with great fans and they have been very nice to me today, so I really appreciate it. This is a new challenge that I am looking forward to."
-
1756:
To be fair to Newcastle that goal has not shook them up. Papiss Cisse drops deep to receive possession and pings a fine ball over the top for his strike partner Demba Ba, but he can't quite gather it in.
-
1754:
It was a wild tackle by Vurnon Anita - he didn't need to make it to be honest. Chelsea could have to make a change here as Raul Meireles is struggling with an injury.
-
1751:GOAL- Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle - Eden Hazard (22 mins)
It's a first goal in Chelsea colours for Eden Hazard - it will not be his last. He has won two penalties in the past week for Frank Lampard to convert, but with Lampard not starting today the Belgian steps up himself to bury the spot kick into the corner.
-
1750:PENALTY TO CHELSEA
Another penalty for Chelsea - it's not Eden Hazard who goes down this time though, but Fernando Torres who is felled by Vurnon Anita.
-
1747:
Brilliant move from Chelsea.
Raul Meireles plays a magnificent 60-yard pass over the top, Fernando Torres cushions it on his chest and is able to play the ball inside to Ryan Bertrand. Bertrand should score to be honest, but can only toe-poke a right-footed effort right at Tim Krul. Great football though.
-
1745:
QPR boss Mark Hughes has mixed thoughts on his team's penalty against Norwich, which Djibril Cisse won and Bobby Zamora scored on the rebound after encroaching in the area.
He told BBC Sport: "I think it was right. Norwich will think it's soft and I'd probably agree with that but there's definitely contact."
On Zamora's encroachment he added: "There were probably three of ours encroaching and four of Norwich's so I think it evens itself out. [Referee] Mark Clattenburg made the right decision there."
-
1744:FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATEST
Watford have been very much on top in this first half and they extend their lead over Birmingham in the 17th minute. Czech striker Matej Vydra times his run to perfection to stay onside and meet Mark Yeates's through-ball, steadies himself before smashing the ball past Jack Butland.
-
1744:
This fixture at the end of the last season saw Papiss Cisse score two sensational goals for Newcastle but he's been anonymous so far.
Chelsea remain on top, with Eden Hazard spinning away from a defender smartly, but his low shot is tame and easily held by Tim Krul.
-
1740:
Newcastle have been behind the ball so far, but they break well to fashion a semi-opening. Yohan Cabaye threads a delicate pass in behind, and Demba Ba almost wriggles free of Gary Cahill but the England man is able to get a toe to the ball.
-
1736:
All eyes are on Eden Hazard after his marvellous start to the season, and the Belgian is flitting about menacingly on the edge of the box. Newcastle could have done with Cheick Tiote in their midfield to hound him down, but Tiote has a calf problem.

Dan Graham on Twitter: "Victor Moses being introduced to the bench that he'll be sitting on all season."
-
1734:
Norwich City boss Chris Hughton was not happy with QPR's penalty, which Bobby Zamora scored on the rebound after a tussle between Sebastien Bassong and Djibril Cisse.
He told BBC Sport: "I'm quite sure their camp will say something different but it's a soft penalty. Cisse was stretching for the ball and his momentum would have taken him down anyway. I accept Seb didn't touch the ball. The double whammy is the pen itself. On the referee's side Bobby Zamora is at least three yards in the box which gives him an advantage."
Djibril Cissee, unsurprisingly, disagrees: "I think it was a penalty. There's contact. I've not seen the video. The referee decided to agree with the goal. I don't know if Bobby was in or out because I was too busy trying to score my penalty."
-
1733:
Newcastle are two goals away from hitting the 1000 mark in the Premier League. But it's been all Chelsea so far in the opening stages.
-
Steve Claridge on Final Score"I think Chelsea might just nick this one against Newcastle. I think they are the club that have the chance of ruffling the feathers of the two Manchester clubs this season."
-
1733:
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert after his side's 3-1 home defeat to Everton: "I know it's a huge job here. We are trying everything to sort it out. For every negative there's a positive and at least we didn't capitulate.
"Will there be any new signings? We'll have to wait and see what happens over the next few days. It's a really young side and sometimes you need a bit of help."

A goal in the late kick-off in the Championship.
Birmingham goalkeeper Jack Butland parries a Watford cross into the air and as the players jostle underneath the ball Blues skipper Steven Caldwell shoves Matej Vydra heavily in the back. Six points from two games is a good start, particularly when your first two games are Manchester United and Aston Villa away."

1725:
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins after his side's defeat at home to Wigan: "The Premier League is a relentless division. We had opportunities and didn't take them. You have to be ruthless, or the harsh reality is you will be punished.
"Goals change games, and 1-0 down with 20 minutes to go, you change your formation to get back into it; that is my responsibility. But, the 4-4-2 saw them have far too much of the ball."

It very nearly wasn't so as Fulham threw everything at United. But goals on their home debuts for Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa, and Rafael with a third, were enough. Manchester United held on."

1655:FULL-TIME- Southampton 0-2 Wigan
MOTD's John Motson reports: "Wigan looked so comfortable towards the end of the second half. They kept clean sheets in their first and last away games last season, and they looked very secure today. After today, Southampton now know what the Premier League is all about."
-
1654:FULL-TIME- Tottenham 1-1 West Brom
MOTD's Martin Fisher at White Hart Lane: "A disappointing start on his new stomping ground for new Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas. James Morrison was the coolest head around when others were losing theirs as he stroked home the equaliser for Steve Clarke's men. The Baggies didn't come out much in the first half, but certainly did in the second."

BBC Match of the Day commentator Laurence Herdman: "After opening day embarrassment a reshuffle in terms of formation and personnel has made it more secure for these sides. Southampton are trying to find a way back at St Mary's against Wigan, and Jos Hooiveld has just headed onto the crossbar following a cross from the impressive Rickie Lambert.

1638:
Fulham captain Brede Hangeland, the only player to be cautioned so far at Old Trafford today, is phenomenally lucky not to be shown the red card - his crunching tackle from the side on Robin van Persie results in the sternest of talking tos from the referee.
United then almost grab a fourth goal as that man Rafael sends in a dipping shot from range which is tipped over the bar by Mark Schwarzer.

1634:GOAL- Aston Villa 1-3 Everton - Karim El Ahmadi (74 mins)
Aston Villa have a consolation strike, but I think that is all it is. Karim El Ahmadi has his first for the club with a curling strike from 25 yards which Tim Howard could only get a hand to.

There are no weather issues a few miles south of rain-sodden Sunderland, with Middlesbrough 2-1 up against Crystal Palace in the Championship. Leaders Blackpool are now cruising 5-0 against Ipswich, including two goals after the break from the in-form Thomas Ince. That takes the highly-valued Ince's tally this season to four in three games. It is tight at the top in League One. As it stands, six clubs are on seven points, including Yeovil who head the table thanks to a 2-0 lead against Scunthorpe. In League Two, Bradford are flying against Wimbledon - 5-1 up at the Coral Windows Stadium. Exeter look set to make it two wins out of two - Alan Gow's double has put them 2-0 up against Accrington. David de Gea is keeping Manchester United in the lead.

Differing opinions in the Final Score studio as Ciaran Clark is sent off for Aston Villa after bringing down Nikica Jelavic. Villa are 3-0 down and the mountain they had to climb has got even bigger.
Garth Crooks is disappointed with the decision, saying: "Nobody in the stadium would have complained if he had stayed on. I am sad for the lad and for everybody concerned. The game is over as a contest now."
Steve Claridge disagrees: "If he is through on goal and somebody clips him then he has to be sent off."

1627:DISALLOWED GOAL FOR SPURS
The ball is in the net for Tottenham but celebrations are short-lived as Jermain Defoe's finish from close range is ruled out for offside against the forward. MOTD's Martin Fisher at White Hart Lane: "Frustrating half for Tottenham, who have dominated possession but so far have been unable to find the right combination in front of goal. It has been a masterclass in wing play from Gareth Bale, but Ben Foster has only had one save to make, and that was straightforward."
-
1549:HALF-TIME- Manchester United 3-1 Fulham
BBC Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray at half-time at Old Trafford: "It seems Fulham scoring first just made United angry here. Taking the game to Manchester United does so often prove the undoing of visiting teams. United have just moved up the gears and are playing some lovely stuff. Rafael has put in an all-action display, doing more attacking than defending. It's been a brilliant first half from an entertainment point of view. Roll on the second half, and Fulham face an almighty task."

1548:HALF-TIME- Aston Villa 0-3 Everton
Alistair Mann, Match of the Day commentator, reports: "Everton keeper Tim Howard has had one save to make, in the final minute of the half. Everton are hungry and in terrific mood whereas Villa are squandering possession far too easily with jeers echoing around Villa Park."

1548:HALF-TIME- Norwich 1-1 QPR
BBC Match of the Day commentator Laurence Herdman: "Simeon Jackson gave Norwich the perfect start on his recall to the side, converting Anthony Pilkington's cross. Sebastien Bassong conceded a penalty on his debut. Djibril Cisse's spot-kick was saved onto the post by John Ruddy. But Bobby Zamora looked to be two yards inside the area when he controversially converted the rebound. However, it's parity at Carrow Road."

1547:HALF-TIME- Southampton 0-0 Wigan
BBC Match of the Day commentator John Motson: "These games are so important to the clubs who are expected to be in the middle or lower parts of the table. Arouna Kone - who is Victor Msoes' replacement for Wigan - is not having the best of times, and is struggling to get on the ball. There was not a lot of incident in this first half, and Adam Lallana's 25-yard drive for Southampton was the standout moment. The hosts have probably looked the most likely."
-
1545:GOAL- Aston Villa 0-3 Everton - Nikica Jelavic (43 mins)
A home debut to forget for Villa boss Paul Lambert as Everton pile on the misery. The home side just cannot defend crosses.

The weather conditions are replicating the dreary play on the pitch at St Mary's in the match between Southampton and Wigan as heavy rain begins to bucket down at the end of the first half. The first goal of Shinji Kagawa's Manchester United career, and he will never bag an easier one.
Fulham half-clear a corner, Tom Cleverley drives in the loose ball from 20 yards, Mark Schwarzer can only parry clear and Kagawa has a tap-in from two yards out. The Japanese looked offside but Sascha Riether was slow getting out and played him onside.

Shay Given. Oh dear.
Phil Jagielka puts in a fine cross from the right which is met by the considerable head of Marouane Fellaini, but it is straight at Given in the Villa goal. He should catch it easily but instead dives past it and can only palm it up into the roof of the net.

Villas-Boas continued in the same vein: "Steve has taken his steps very wisely and I'm happy he has achieved his ambition of becoming a manager. I respect him a lot because he took those steps very sensibly. It's an excellent opportunity for him so I am very happy for him."

Steve Claridge on Final ScoreSpeaking about whether Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie can play in the same team together: "There is no doubt they can play together. Wayne Rooney used to play with Michael Owen and you can see a similar situation with Robin van Persie playing up front and Rooney in the hole. He has the peripheral vision to cause problems from there."

1445:Tottenham v West Brom (15:00 BST)
With football fate being as it is it would come as no surprise if West Brom's on-loan Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku scores at White Hart Lane today. Andre Villas-Boas, who was in charge at Stamford Bridge for the start of Lukaku's debut Blues season but rarely selected the 19-year-old, is certainly wary. "I think he is ready for the Premier League," said Villas-Boas. "He is obviously a player with tremendous talent that competed last year against two of the world's best players at Chelsea. Lukaku had frustrations last year that you can understand. It's up to him to compete but when you compete against Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba the job is difficult."
-
1444:Manchester United v Fulham (15:00 BST)
The headlines will all be about Wayne Rooney's omission, but in reality the entire forward line who played for Manchester United in their defeat at Everton have been left on the bench. Rooney and Danny Welbeck make way for Ashley Young and the full debut of £24m frontman Robin van Persie. Sir Alex Ferguson also relegates Paul Scholes to the bench with Anderson replacing him, while Nani, who started at Goodison Park, is not even in the 18.
For visitors Fulham, who thrashed Norwich 5-0 on the opening day of the season, there is just the one change - Matthew Briggs comes in at left-back for John Arne Riise.

1444:
Referee Neil Swarbrick, speaking to Final Score about the decision to call off the game between Sunderland and Reading at the Stadium of Light: "It is because of a waterlogged pitch. There was standing water on the pitch when we arrived. We looked at the forecast for the rest of the day and the rain is only going to get worse. I spoke with both managers and they were in full agreement that it was not playable."
-
1440:
Reading manager Brian McDermott, speaking to Final Score about the postponement of the Royals' game at Sunderland due to a waterlogged pitch: "There is no way a game could be played today. It is highly unusual a game is called off in August, but it is what it is and we look forward now to Tuesday."
-
1440:Aston Villa v Everton (15:00 BST)
Aston Villa have scored two goals in the last seven Premier League games and Paul Lambert says his side need to do more to support striker Darren Bent. "I can understand the frustration because I was frustrated myself," said Lambert after the England international barely had a touch in last Saturday's 1-0 defeat at West Ham.
Staying on the theme of strikers, Everton manager David Moyes has told fans not to expect too much too soon from Kevin Mirallas. "We've got to let him settle in, but we are really pleased to have him," he said.

1331:
As poor as they may have been, West Ham are a threat from corners. Carlton Cole is the latest to win a header which is on its way into the corner until a Swansea knee clears the ball. Almost a way back.

1328:
West Ham fans may be hoping that weather can make its way down in time to get this one called off - the Hammers have been poor in this half. George McCartney is the latest to aim a ball in the vague direction of Carlton Cole to no avail.

West Ham's main threat is definitely from set-pieces. They win another free-kick out on the left which is well delivered, James Collins wins the header at the far post but Swansea stand firm and are able to get it away.
-
1308:
West Ham just have not got to grips with Angel Rangel down that right-hand side and it has cost them. The Hammers do force a moment of panic from a long-range free-kick but the hosts clear it away.
-
1305:GOAL- Swansea 1-0 West Ham - Angel Rangel (20 mins)
He's been the main man all day - and Angel Rangel puts Swansea ahead. But it's not a moment to remember for West Ham goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen. Rangel is played into the box by Jonathan de Guzman and drives the ball across the box. I'm not sure it is actually on target though until Jaaskelainen helps it in.
-
1304:
A few of you have text in to comment on this Swansea kit - it's super sharp isn't it? A bit Real Madrid - but very nice indeed.
They are fully into their rhythm now.
-
1302:
Again Angel Rangel is causing havoc. He drives down the right, and when the ball comes back to Wayne Routledge he crosses in for Danny Graham - who can't quite get his head on the ball. West Ham are hanging on a bit here.
-
1300:
Another nice move from Swansea, they again get Angel Rangel involved on the overlap but his low cross is well cleared by Winston Reid. The home side are starting to build the pressure.
