Keeper Brian Jensen was the hero as Burnley beat Plymouth in a penalty shoot-out to reach the third round of the League Cup.
Jensen saved three Plymouth penalties, allowing Brian Stock to seal a 3-2 shoot-out victory for the Clarets.
Charlie Austin looked to have won the game for the Championship side in normal time with a well-taken header.
But Robbie Williams converted a 90th-minute penalty for League Two Plymouth to ensure the game went the distance.
The equalising spot-kick was given for a foul on Paris Cowan-Hall by Sam Vokes, who went on to miss two decent chances to redeem himself.
Argyle frustrated the home side and kept themselves in contention for what would have been only their second win in the competition in five years, having knocked out Portsmouth in round one.
They could have stolen a famous win towards the end of extra-time when Conor Hourihane had a sight of goal, but Jensen was equal to his shot.
The Burnley keeper then saved from Williams, Luke Young and Hourihane in the shoot-out to give Stock the final say and send his side through.
Burnley boss Eddie Howe on winning on penalties:
"I didn't want anything like that.
"We were a goal up and in the second half we had the mode that we wanted to see the game out at 1-0 but on the bench we wanted them to go on and get two or three.
"It wasn't ideal. There were some good performances but there were some ones which probably weren't so good but hopefully that's a learning curve for the players."
Plymouth boss Carl Fletcher:
"I thought the lads did really well to come to a Championship side away, especially after the miles we have done. To play like we did I'm pleased with the lads.
"We needed to change a few things at half-time and we did. It was key not to panic at 1-0.
"I'm lucky that I have some good players. The average age of the team wasn't that high but they are technically good with the football.
"We settled into the game and got better and better as it went on. I'm disappointed that we lost because we could have gone on to win it.
"The lads are all disappointed in the dressing room but they shouldn't be after the performance."
