2227:
Well that's all from us for one night - join us back here on Wednesday night as Chelsea take on Reading. I'll see you there.
-
2224:
Everton manager David Moyes, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I thought that we played ever so well. We had to dig deep at times, but you saw the pressure we had and the saves David de Gea had to make.
"Marouane Fellaini is good wherever he plays. I think Manchester United not having all their centre-halves available made it a different game. But he scored from a set play, and you will see a lot of that in the Premier League this season."
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"Everyone thinks Robin van Persie is an out-and-out centre forward, because he had that great season for Arsenal, but I'm not sure that's his best position.
"I think he's better as a number 10, off a main striker, and I think that's where he was trying to play when he came on."
-
2221:
Next up for Everton is a trip to Aston Villa at the weekend. On tonight's evidence they will be a real test for Paul Lambert's side.
-
2221:
Manchester United have a home game coming up next - against Fulham on Saturday - which could be the perfect time to give Robin van Persie a starting role and get their season up and running.
Fulham did win 5-0 at the weekend of course, but traditionally they have struggled at Old Trafford.
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"I think one of the problems David Moyes has had in the past is that he's had players prepared to work in every area of the pitch - except at centre-forward.
"He's got that sorted out now. You look at Fellaini, at Jelavic - and I think Mirallas is going to be the same - and they've got the workrate there now too."
-
2215:
David de Gea had a cracking first half in particular. His save to deny Leon Osman was out of the top drawer.
Let's not forget though that Manchester United have the following players to come into that starting XI:
Rafael, Phil Jones, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Anderson, Dimitar Berbatov, Ryan Giggs, Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez, Ashley Young, Robin van Persie, Darren Fletcher, Nick Powell and Federico Macheda.
I don't think they are finished just yet...
-

Andrew McCoy on Twitter: "The only United players that can walk off that pitch with their heads held high are Kagawa and De Gea."
-
Everton defender Phil Jagielka: "We knew it was going to be hard, against a great team such as Manchester United. But the big man put his head in where it hurts and we got the reward.
"Fellaini is nigh on impossible to mark. In training, we normally pull his hair, but you can't do that in a game!
"Everyone's a bit tired, but it's nice to send Everton fans home with a win to start the season. It's better than we normally do!"
-
2210:
The word being banded about to describe Maroune Fellaini's performance tonight is 'unplayable.'
David Moyes will hope he doesn't get too many offers for the big Belgian before the end of the transfer window.
-
Everton striker Marouane Fellaini: "It's a great start to the season for us. We started well and we kept going. It was a good performance from us.
"For the goal, it was a good corner and I just tried to get my head on it. We had a lot of chances in the first half, and I felt that if we kept going, there was a chance we would score."
-
2206:
The bad news for Manchester United fans is that only twice in Premier League history has any club lost their opening match of the season and gone on to become champions.
The good news is that both times it was Manchester United - in 1992-93 and 1995-96.
-
2202:
David Moyes said before kick-off that with all the talk of Robin van Persie people had forgotten about Everton - they certainly haven't after that win.

From Conor, via text on 81111: "Fergie got it wrong, starting Valencia at right-back was a waste of talent.
"But hats off to Fellaini, the man was unbeatable in the air and our faux-Barca tactics didn't work. Fergie has to learn that this club does not suit 4-2-3-1. Bring back 4-4-2."
From Sanja in Herts, via text on 81111: "Fellaini was utterly fantastic. He made the Man Utd defence look like amateurs. Don't think Man Utd have shown title potential tonight."
-
2200:
Pat Nevin has gone big there - I'm not even sure who the top four will be this season but I'd guess that Spurs and Livepool to name but two will be in the mix.
Everton were very impressive though.
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"I think this is the season when if anyone's going to get close to the top four, it's Everton."
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Goodison Park"Everton had Goodison Park rocking at the final whistle and with every justification. David Moyes' side - with Marouane Fellaini close to unplayable - were outstanding. Manchester United were outplayed and even the belated introduction of Robin van Persie made no difference."
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"Manchester United were the better side in the second half by a long way. But Everton for their first-half display, and for the way they defended in the second half, just about deserved it.
"Does this mean Everton can start the season the way they normally finish?"

2156:
The only slightly bad news for Everton fans is the sight of Sylvain Distin having to be helped off the field at the end. He made two massive headers in the dying seconds and has obviously done himself some damage in the process. Let's hope that's not too bad an injury.
-
2154:
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright is absolutely beaming in the directors box. He's seen some opening nights in his time but this must be the best.
What now for Manchester United? Sir Alex Ferguson will be a concerned man after that. They had so many attacking players on the pitch by the end but barely created a chance.

What a win for Everton, a gutsy, gutsy display to hang on after they took a deserved lead.
-
2152:FULL-TIME- Everton 1-0 Manchester United
-
2151:
It's a good corner as well, but Sylvain Distin makes a brilliant clearing header. Into the final seconds now...
-
2150:
Phil Jagielka hammers a ball out of play. Anywhere will do now, before Tony Hibbert has to knock it behind for a corner...
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"It's going to feel like a long four minutes for everyone involved with Everton, but particularly the players. They are exhausted."
-
John Murray, BBC commentator"I think Fellaini might need a sedan chair to get off the field, he's so tired. But he might just have scored the winning goal."
-
2150:SUBSTITUTION- John Heitinga on for Marouane Fellaini
What a performance from Marouane Fellaini. He's battered this Manchester United defence all night.
-
2148:
It's a debut for Steven Naismith, who gets a warm reception.
At the other end, Anderson fires a shot wide as we tick over into four minutes of stoppage-time...
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"I'm a great admirer of Steven Naismith. He may not look the tallest, but don't let him get a free header."
-
2148:SUBSTITUTION- Steven Naismith on for Nikica Jelavic
-
2147:
After endless passes across the area, Anderson gives the ball away for Manchester United, Seamus Coleman is able to bring the ball away and does a fine job for his side.
He carries it 60 yards up the pitch and then wins a free-kick into the bargain. The crowd cheer that like a goal.

From Jamie in Leigh-on-Sea, via text on 81111: "Man Utd have missed a trick. Alex Song is like Robin to RVP's Batman. £40m for both would have been a bargain and would guarantee many goals!"
-
2145:
Nikica Jelavic has to have some treatment for what looks like cramp, that will bring up a bit more stoppage time. There are three minuts of normal time remaining as Ashley Young puts an aimless cross straight at Tim Howard.
-
2143:SUBSTITUTION- Anderson on for Tom Cleverley
-
2143:
More fine defending from Phil Jagielka cuts out a pass intended for Wayne Rooney. It's all hands to the pump now for the hosts.
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"Everton are getting closer to victory, but they've got the same problem - they're not getting out. We're sitting on the halfway line and we've hardly turned to our left - the end Everton are attacking - in the last 15 or 20 minutes.
"We've seen a lot of brilliant defending tonight, from Distin particularly in the first half and Jagielka in the second, but Hibbert has done really well too."
-
2141:
Everton lack an out ball here. They could do with a Louis Saha or Royston Drenthe to hit over the top, Nikica Jelavic looks spent and every time they get it away the ball keeps coming back at them.

I thought that Darron Gibson stat sounded too good to be true. He's been a solid addition since he joined though, no doubts about that.
Here come United, with Robin van Persie teasing a pass across the goalmouth and Tim Howard smothering Shinji Kagawa at the near post. Dangerous times for the hosts. Can they hang on?

-
2134:
Robin van Persie drifts out to the left in search of the bal, but his cross in when it comes is poor and Tim Howard easily holds it. Everton are pretty much sitting back all the time now and trying to soak up the pressure. It's a dangerous game against Manchester United.

-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"It's difficult to know if Manchester United are playing much better or if it's a case of Everton sitting much deeper because they're tiring. I'm looking at Pienaar and he's exhausted. I'm looking at Osman and he's tiring."

Here's the first real chance for United. Nani's cross from the right is dangerous, Shinji Kagawa is able to dance away from Tim Howard and tee up Tom Cleverley, but his shot is cleared off the line. Close.
-
2122:
Bit of an office debate breaking out here - why didn't Belgium qualify for the Euros?
In Fellaini, Mignolet, Courtois, Van Buyten, Kompany, Vertonghen, Hazard, Lukaku, Vermaelen, Dembele, Witsel and Mirallas they must have enough quality.
Is this the golden generation of Belgians?

-
2122:
Marouane Fellaini causes chaos again, he wins another header in the box but this time it is straight at David de Gea. Robin van Persie is still trotting up and down on the far touchline...
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Goodison Park"Goodison Park is rocking as Everton really put Manchester United on the rack. The goal was thoroughly deserved and the source was predictable. United have not been able to cope with Marouane Fellaini."
-
2118:
You can't get any more basic than that from Pat Nevin - but he's right. Manchester United have no answer to the big diagonal ball to Marouane Fellaini. But they do possess plenty of quality players going forwards to cause danger in the Everton backline.
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"The problem Manchester United have is that Everton are bigger than them. Everton have four players who are fantastic in the air and United haven't got as many."

They need Gary Pallister at the minute though. What a performance this has been from Fellaini.
-
2115:GOAL- Everton (Marouane Fellaini, 57 mins) 1-0 Man Utd
If ever a man deserved a goal... This is as basic as it gets, Everton fire in a corner from the right and Marouane Fellaini towers over his marker to thump a header into the bottom corner. Thoroughly deserved.
-
2114:
Wayne Rooney fires one way over the top after more neat play from Shinji Kagawa, but Everton still look dangerous as well. Surely we are not going to get a 0-0 here?
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"You can always see how teams are tiring by where they're closing down. In the first half, Everton were closing down 10 yards inside their own half. Now they're closing down 10 yards outside their own penalty area.
"They are tiring and so there will be gaps. And Manchester United have the players to find them."

Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live"Osman caught it absolutely perfectly. The work by Fellaini made it happen. And well as De Gea has been playing, he couldn't get near it."

2107:HITS THE WOODWORK
Unlucky. So unlucky for Everton as they hit the woodwork again.

Here are two entirely contradictory statistics for you to mull over a half-time brew:
Manchester United have won only one of their last 10 Premier League away matches that have been goalless at half time.
But, United have gone on to win on three of the five occasions in Premier League history they have been drawing 0-0 at half at Goodison Park (losing twice).

Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney move the ball delightfully across the penalty area and Kagawa then releases Danny Welbeck with a peach of a pass. The England man goes to ground as he gets his shot away, he wants a penalty but I don't think there was much contact from Phil Jagielka.

Brilliant target-man play from Marouane Fellaini as he kills a ball beautifully on his chest and spreads it wide. -
2015:HITS THE WOODWORK
Not much finesse about this - but it's mightily effective for Everton.
Marouane Fellaini chests down a throw-in, bundles over Antonio Valencia and outmuscles Michael Carrick before sprinting into the area and hitting the near post from a tight angle. Magnificent play from Fellaini.
-
2012:YELLOW CARD- Paul Scholes
Paul Scholes has started to stamp his authority on this game, he is dictating the play from midfield in classic style.
But this is also classic Scholes - a lunge into a sliding challenge nowhere near the ball. Booked.
-
2008:
Manchester United are looking pretty flexible up top.
Danny Welbeck is the out-and-out focal point, with Nani on the right and Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa flitting about behind. Kagawa has been very mobile so far, and his first venture into enemy territory sees a cross which just evades Welbeck.

Everton win a free-kick in the opening seconds and put it in the mixer to test this makeshift Manchester United defence. Leighton Baines whips it in and Leon Osman is the unlikely man who wins the header - he meets it well but it is a long way wide.

I'm going to put this out there - I'm not a fan of this new Manchester United kit.
Anyway, the tea-towelled boys are coming down the tunnel now alongside their hosts from Everton. Z Cars is on the tannoy - kick-off is imminent...
-
Pat Nevin, BBC Radio 5 live pundit"It's a big problem for Manchester United whenever they come here. They don't get any space in midfield because Everton will chase them down for everything, so it's going to be a tough evening for them.
"I'm looking forward to seeing Nikica Jelavic. I think there's more to come from him. Everybody's talking about Manchester United, but don't write off Everton."
-
1954:
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson: "The defensive situation has been a problem for us in pre-season.
"It's a concern, but there's nothing else we can do. Michael Carrick has played centre-back a few times, so I don't have any great issues about that."
-
1953:
Just under 10 minutes to go until kick-off then, and Everton new boy Kevin Mirallas is introduced to the Goodison faithful.
He will wear the 11 shirt and could prove a canny addition. He was signed too late to feature this evening but he's fit and available to join in soon.
-
1948:
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson: "Robin's not played any football. There's a lot of expectation on him, and I think it's better he starts on the bench.
"He's a great player, and there was always a temptation to start him. But the sensible route tonight is to start him on the bench."
-
1945:
Sir Alex Ferguson has just said that he has left Javier Hernandez out as he had to get some defensive cover on the bench. He's got too many strikers hasn't he? We've all been there on Football Manager...

A good point that about Javier Hernandez. I was just thinking how strong Manchester United's bench looked and there are still the likes of the Mexican and Ryan Giggs to come in - plus Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans, Nick Powell...

From Mike Harding, via text on 81111: "Surely we are in for a feast of attacking football tonight. With the side they have, United will have to go forward. Everton will see the United defensive selection as a weakness and must also attack."
From Max in London, via text on 81111: "Berbatov has made the bench for United as he is the cover for centre-back!"
-
1939:
There was a glint in David Moyes's eyes when he said that people may have forgotten about Everton here.
I can guarantee that his players will go out on that pitch cranked up. This could be high-octane stuff.
-
1938:
Everton manager David Moyes: "Monday night games are all well and good but as as a manager it's a long weekend. We have added one or two to the squad, we are happy with that. People are talking about Van Persie and I think they've forgotten that Everton are involved in this game."

-
1934:
Paul Scholes starts for Manchester United tonight - he made his debut on 21 September 1994 and I make this the start of his 18th Premier League season.
He's won it 10 times, and he's not even the most successful midfielder at the club. Extraordinary.
Ryan Giggs is not involved this evening by the way.

I'm looking forward to having a first good look at Shinji Kagawa tonight. Again - quite where all these attacking players are going to fit in is somewhat of a mystery to me but we shall find out very shortly.
-

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Goodison ParkEverton v Man Utd (20:00 BST)"Manchester United's £24m new boy Robin van Persie starts on the bench after his move from Arsenal as Sir Alex Ferguson pairs Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck in attack. Not many natural defenders in United's line-up but at least captain Nemanja Vidic returns in central defence.
"Everton manager David Moyes plays one summer signing Steven Pienaar but another, Steven Naismaith, is one of the substitutes."
-
1916:
No arguments on that score James.
Nemanja Vidic is a class act, but he could be busy tonight as he is partnered at centre-half by Michael Carrick, with Antonio Valencia at right-back.
-

From James Eastleigh, via text on 81111: "Although United have made big and exciting signings this summer, the return of Vidic should not be overlooked - as when fully fit, he has to be one of the best centre-backs in the world."
-
1915:
Of course it's not all about Manchester United this evening.
Everton fans will be hoping that their boys can get off to a flying start, but after losing Tim Cahill and Jack Rodwell over the summer David Moyes's side could be a bit light in midfield.
There have been signings though - Steven Naismith is on the bench after leaving the artists formally known as Rangers, while new Belgian striker Kevin Mirallas is not available to play tonight.
-
John Murray, BBC Radio 5 live commentator at Goodison Park"In the last six seasons, Everton have finished in the top eight. The key for them is to get a decent start to the season. If they can do that, you could say they would be pushing upwards of that."
-
1910:
So Robin van Persie is left on the bench tonight - which is not a total surprise - but just who will play up front for United this year then?
Wayne Rooney is a given, surely, just behind Van Persie?
But what about Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez? Dimitar Berbatov is still there - just about.
And then there are the likes of Ashley Young, Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ryan Giggs and fellow new boy Shinji Kagawa to accommodate.
Maybe Rooney will play at centre-half...
-
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Goodison Park"Manchester United start the task of taking the Premier League title back from Manchester City with a testing fixture at Everton.
"Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa will add their talents to Sir Alex Ferguson's squad but Everton manager David Moyes has added attacking quality of his own in the shape of Steven Naismith and the returning Steven Pienaar. Latest signing Kevin Mirallas did not sign in time to play - but Moyes will want Everton to show they are not going to suffer from a familiar slow start this season."

1906:BREAKING TEAM NEWS- Everton v Man Utd (20:00 BST)
Robin van Persie starts on the bench for Manchester United, who have captain Nemanja Vidic back in defence after his lengthy absence with a knee injury.
-
1903:
Manchester United scored 89 league goals last season. A lot in anyone's book, but it wasn't enough as Manchester City took the glory thanks to their haul of 93 - and a better defensive record.
So Sir Alex Ferguson added Robin van Persie to the mix, and must now find a way to shoehorn the Dutchman who scored 30 goals in the top flight last season into his XI.
-
1900:
Cast your minds back 99 days.
A time before the Olympics wowed us all into a giddy state of hysteria, a time before the Euros even. It really was just 99 days ago that Manchester United lost the Premier League title to rivals City thanks to that famous late, late goal from Sergio Aguero.
You can only begin to imagine what went through Sir Alex Ferguson's mind on that evening of 13 May when he digested losing the title on goal difference - but we have seen how determined he is to make sure it doesn't happen again.
He went out and signed last year's top scorer Robin van Persie - and tonight we will see just how he fits in to the United side at Everton...
