Charlton Athletic and Hull City ground out an uninspiring goalless draw in terrible conditions at The Valley.

The pitch was affected by a series of heavy downpours and it was no surprise that chances were at a premium.

Leon Cort should have broken the deadlock on half-time when he headed a Johnnie Jackson corner wide amid thunder and lightning.

Hull finished well and Danny Hollands blocked Paul McKenna's goal-bound effort as the game ended deadlocked.

The draw maintained Charlton's unbeaten start to the league season, while Hull have now kept two clean sheets in their opening three matches.

Charlton's first chance fell to Bradley Pritchard, who latched on to Yann Kermorgant's flick-on but saw his shot smartly blocked by Alex Bruce.

There was a brief moment of panic for the Addicks when City had strong appeals for a penalty waved away following Cort's challenge on Corry Evans.

And they had a further let off on the half-hour when Sone Aluko raced through on goal but blasted his strike straight at Ben Hamer.

Hamer performed more heroics late on when he first blocked substitute Jay Simpson's effort before picking himself up to deny the onrushing Aluko when he looked certain to score.

Charlton manager Chris Powell:

"I suppose it was a fair result on reflection of how the day panned out. I feel we had a very good period in the first half when we put them under a lot of pressure.

"In the second half as it went on Hull got into the ascendancy and Ben Hamer made some good saves. Ben Hamer has arguably been our best player in our opening three games.

"Today in difficult conditions, his positioning and his bravery, especially with the double save in the second half, has earned us the point today."

Hull assistant manager Steve Agnew:

"It was entertaining, the thunder and lightning brought the game to life. It was a game where we thought we had more of the chances and probably could've nicked it.

"They'll be a tough nut to crack at home Charlton, they are good side, they have a lot of momentum and are very strong.

"A point away at Charlton is a good point, they are good on set pieces and have terrific delivery."
