Aston Villa end interest in Jermain Defoe and Kenwyne Jones

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has ruled out signing Tottenham's Jermain Defoe and Stoke's Kenwyne Jones.

The Midlands club were strongly linked with Defoe  and Trinidad and Tobago forward Jones with Darren Bent their only available proven goalscorer.

Lambert, who left Norwich for Villa in June , admits he wants new strikers but says he will be looking elsewhere.

"They are two top players, those lads. But that's not going to happen here," said the Scot.

"I have seen the rumours linking us with some players but a lot of them aren't going to happen.

"I have never stopped looking. Someone might come in. We'll have to wait and see. You can never be quite sure until someone walks through the door and they are actually here."

Lambert succeeding Alex McLeish who was sacked after the side finished 16th in the table. When Lambert was appointed, Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner said they had to "freshen up the squad" to be challenging in the top half.

He has since signed Ron Vlaar from Feyenoord for £3.2m, Matthew Lowton from Sheffield United for £3m, Karim El Ahmadi from Feyenoord for £2.5m and Brett Holman on a free transfer from AZ Alkmaar.
