League One newcomers Crewe Alexandra saw their unbeaten run of 20 matches brought to an end by Notts County.

Crewe went into the game in positive mood, having hammered Hartlepool 5-0 in the Capital One Cup last Saturday.

But Francois Zoko's volley and a neat finish from Yoann Arquin condemned the hosts to a first defeat since February.

Arquin was sent off soon afterwards for a late challenge on Ashley Westwood, and 10-man County hung on despite a late header from Mathias Pogba.

But they were indebted to striker Lee Hughes, who denied Alex skipper Westwood with a last-ditch challenge in the closing stages.

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis told BBC Radio Stoke:

"I was encouraged. It was a disappointing result, but in terms of the attitude and application that they put in, and the fantastic amount of work they put in, I thought it was a decent performance.

"They didn't disappoint. I thought they were decent. We made one mistake and they punished us. That was the difference.

"We just probed to try to get something, and we got something from a set play which was pleasing. It was a great corner and a great header from Pogba."
