Goals from Troy Brown and Josh Payne were enough to give Aldershot an opening-day victory at Plymouth Argyle.

Centre-back Brown put the Shots ahead inside five minutes at Home Park, heading in Anthony Tonkin's free-kick.

And Payne doubled the advantage shortly after half time, despatching from the penalty spot after Michael Rankine had been fouled in the box.

Plymouth midfielder Conor Hourihane came closest to a goal for the hosts, shooting just over from 20 yards.

Plymouth Argyle manager Carl Fletcher told BBC Radio Devon:

"Goals changed the game for us today, we didn't cut the mistakes and it cost us.

"Overall the lads worked really hard, we had plenty of chances, and we just could not get that ball in the back of the net.

"I think they (Aldershot) have changed a lot since last season, they are a lot more physical and it was hard work.

"When you play in League Two it's important you don't give away free-kicks, it's just a chance for a team to get a ball in your box and I was disappointed by the way we dealt with that and the penalty."

Aldershot boss Dean Holdsworth told BBC Surrey:

"It was fantastic to come here and give a performance and the win is fantastic for us, and the team will grow in confidence. We came here with a plan and were very strong and solid.

"You have to play the crowd and be the gladiators in the coliseum, so to speak, and I thought we handled it with great experience and maturity.

"The first goal was a fantastic delivery by Tonkin and header by Troy Brown and it gave our fans a real lift and we grew in stature during the game."
