Gareth Barry and Micah Richards are out of Manchester City's Community Shield encounter with Chelsea at Villa Park on Sunday due to injury.
Midfielder Barry, 31, has failed to recover from the hip injury that kept him out of Euro 2012.
He had a hernia operation last month and is
hopeful of being fit for the start of the new Premier League season.
Defender Richards hurt his ankle in
Great Britain's Olympic quarter-final defeat by South Korea.
City captain Vincent Kompany has a calf problem, but is expected to be fit to take his place in the squad.
The 26-year-old was forced to fly home from City's tour of Asia and has not played since picking up the strain.
David Silva and Mario Balotelli, who were
Euro 2012 finalists
for Spain and Italy respectively, are likely to be on the bench.
