Ipswich Town came from behind to defeat League Two side Bristol Rovers in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

The visitors went ahead against the run of play when Michael Smith curled an effort from 30 yards past Scott Loach.

But the hosts equalised just before half-time, Jason Scotland finding the bottom corner with a precise finish.

Rovers keeper Sam Walker saved Michael Chopra's penalty but Tommy Smith headed in from the resulting corner before Aaron Cresswell nodded in a late third.

Ipswich manager Paul Jewell told BBC Radio Suffolk:

"There's no doubt about it - the win was well deserved.

"They scored against the run of play and made it difficult for us, which we expected them to, but we passed the ball a bit crisper, a bit sharper, as the first half went on and we got our just rewards.

"You look for a reaction when things go against you and we got the right reaction.

"We're not a big group of players, we're not an old group of players, but we've got a good spirit about us and although we know it's a long season ahead of us, we're looking forward to it."

Bristol Rovers manager Mark McGhee told BBC Radio Bristol:

"We knew it was going to be difficult but we came here with a plan and the players executed the plan for an hour.

"We started to run out of energy and maybe we didn't have enough firepower on the bench.

"I think 3-1 was hard on us. I think Ipswich probably edged it but it was a bit harsh.

"Overall, I think we can be reasonably pleased."
