Championship side Peterborough eased past League Two Southend in the Capital One Cup first round.

Lee Tomlin stabbed home the hosts' first, before Paul Taylor beat two defenders and slotted home for 2-0.

And moments later Joe Newell delightfully chipped over the keeper to effectively end the contest.

Southend came close when Kane Ferdinand's header hit the bar, but George Boyd fired home to secure a comfortable victory for the Posh.

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:

"The fourth goal was the best, we just kept passing it and moving it and Tommo (Lee Tomlin) found Boydy with a great pass and it was a good finish.

"We've had to be patient for the start of the season. It's taken a long time [to arrive] but I felt the team were ready for it.

"We put a good, professional performance on and I was pleased about that.

"The second half, they caused us one or two problems because they changed their formation but the main threat was set-pieces, the boy Hall does have a hell of a delivery but we dealt with that OK."

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:

"I've got too many young players who are showing their inexperience, showing their lack of confidence at certain times in the game.

"The engine room is the most important part of any football club, right down the middle. At this minute in time we're soft-centred.

"[Tonight] has exposed the fact that we can't do it without four or five players who are missing today.

"It is showing we need men not boys, the young players need a hand. That's something I'm going to have to look into."
